Does anyone know when the ek block is out for this card.
Hi,
we believe the block should be ready and available no late than mid June.
Regards,
Niko
Thanx cant wait got chiller just waiting for block
Any news on the lightning block? Eagerly awaiting it's release.
Got it, just can't show it yet :P Sry fellas, slight delay due to all these new 670/690/7870 water blocks.
tiborrr: i'm slightly interested - how long on average it takes from beginning of measurements/starting design to actual packaged block in shelves? Month? Half a year? More?
We do design rather quickly, doesn't matter if it's reference or non-reference. It's the prototype that takes long since I need to hijack the one milling machine just to make a sample.
No no, my question should not be understood in any way like if you are slow in getting this particular block out, rather it was just generic interest about "how things work" in vendor's "kitchen" :)
Eg. there probably are stages like measuring/designing/making sample/extensive testing/programming making machines/printing documentation, designing & making packaging and whatever else belongs to final logistics. No clue how long each phase takes and such ..
Ya, I like manufacturing processes too. Although some of that information is kept close hold due to competition. I wonder if EK measures GPU PCB's for blocks using a 3d laser scanner or does it old school by hand. ;)
i think that they get 3d models from producers (for reference design)...
Niko,
Still a few weeks out on the 7970 Lightning blocks? I just had a question about the liquid bridges on your site. I didn't see a 4-way bridge on the new style. Those bridges are required with these new single sided input/output cards right? What would be the best way to connect four of these water blocks together?
Hi!
4-way bridge is already manufactured, it will come both in plexi as well as in acetal version. It's actually semi-parallel, not parallel. Flow splits for first two cards and the last two cards.
I'll have some photos of EK-FC7970 LTG ready by tomorrow.
Regards,
Niko
Awesome Niko,
Can certain ports be blocked off with the 4-way bridge? As in, you could still use the four way bridge in 2 and 3 way crossfire/SLI and not have to buy separate bridge for each config?
Waiting to see the 7970 LTG.. I'd already emailed EK asking when it would be avail.
Good to hear it's going to make an appearance soon :)
Ya, talking to people on the forums there are a lot looking forward to this block.
Yes, the user will be able to close ports just like it was with our previous generation of FC Bridges & Links. We will have blank links ready and available really soon. You will need blank parallel links for the Quad bridge.
Pictures later today as there is other work to do :)
I promised a photo yesterday, sorry I could not deliver. I went to mountains directly after work so I didn't had time to post a photo. Was standing on the summit at 7:30PM and returned back to car at 9:00PM, practically ran the last 500m altitude meters in five minutes from the gully to the starting point.
Please disregard the lack of badge, circle graphics on the metal plate and my handwriting :)

Look's good. Done any temp/clock testing on that bad boy?
Not yet, I hope to get it done today.
looks great! i have been wondering, did you decide to leave the two memory vrms uncovered or does the block extend over far enough to the right to cover them? the picture makes it seem as though it wont
i see ports only in POM top. is this a new EK trend? i can understand when card wider then typical to avoid case incompatibility but for all other cards? it makes plumbing big PITA IMHO
Niko clear your PM box it's full! ;)
So...any update on these blocks? I mean I will fly out there and start packing them for you but don't be alarmed if I just take my 3 and leave lol.
Just as an update, according to ekwb.com the block won't be available until the 2nd half of July...hopefully won't slip to August
Best to get a great block even if it means a little delay.
Absolutely. My only concern is what they plan to do with the two memory vrms located on the far right of the PCB located about halfway between the power connectors. The original block shown does not seem to cover these vrms at all so has me wondering if they are going to be forced to include heat sinks for them which would seem to be something they would hate to have to do. Maybe they will extend a copper leg off of the block base so as to be passively cooled by the block itself.
@jomama22: Yes, this is one of things addressed. It's a huge block and new clamping tool has to be made. Very soon, I promise!
Sweet.
This is why I love this hobby. There is always something to look forward to (my ADD needs to be satisfied somehow!) And the tight knit community that is a pleasure to be a part of. Thanks for the update tiborrr
so will this block have in and out on the under side only or optional in and out?
As jomama22 said, holes in plexi top only. FC link is included.
Might steal some of Niko's thunder but I must post:

Pure sex! I think this might be the largest single GPU card block I've ever seen.
need more gold :p

Jaw just hit ground.
I am very happy you decided to just cover the whole damn PCB lol. Must weigh a ton and be the size of a child's cricket bat.
Those circles are still hideous!
hey tiborrr, any way we can get some pictures of the copper base side as well as the flow route inside the block itself?
Hiya,
Firstly who really cares about circles? As long as the block cools my card well. That's all that matters. And anyhow... I won't even see the top of the card as it will be at the underside of the card.
So I'm happy with the aesthetics. Looks bang on!
Would also like to see more pics of the underside and the flow area if at all possible :)
Great job from what I can see thus far :)
in a perfect world we could get looks and performance, but i digress id rather have performance over looks if i had to choose between the two.
I thought the lightening was good...
Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 TOXIC 6GB
WOW... I'm sure EK will want to make a WB for that.
The Sapphire would be good if they didn't ruin it with horrible display outputs. Why give it 6GB VRAM if you cannot run large Eyefinity with it?
So who can't wait until tomorrow?! After 4 months of waiting it come down to this lol. Hopefully they will begin selling these either tomorrow or soon after.
Hm, wonder if there are more problems with the EK block. Going on August now and still no word.
I received an email this morning responding to the question of when we can expect to see this. They said It was still in testing and is expected in the next ten day. I had thought the testing was already completed but maybe there is more? I really don't know, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't growing a bit impatient.
Not true, EK-FC7970 LTG is already manufactured and is being assembled now. Support guy mixed up a couple of thing when I was explaining it to him :)
Please post your results on water vs air when you get them! I've been seriously considering this card, want to see how it does on water fully covered!
NICE!!! I thought these blocks were going to be Acetal-Copper and not Acetal-Nickel? Anyway, I am going to need 4 of em to feed the beast, so hopefully that red OOS inventory is temporary :)
Holy crap they are out of stock already in less than two hours, did EK make like ten of them or less?
We'll have more tomorrow and on Thursday.
Ah cool. I didn't realize that once the product is put up on the EK store you can pre-order if out of stock. So I got my order in. Hopefully get four of them shipped out over the next day or two.
Ya, I put my back order for four blocks in too. I also ordered this FC Quad Bridge...please let me know if this is the proper bridge for (4) 7970 lightnings!

Dare I say these blocks have sold out Lightning Fast
I put my order for three in as well. So tiborrr...gonna help move us to the front of the shipping line? ;) lol
$50 shipping for two of them. :(
Guess I'll wait until they're available locally.
Dang, I got 5 PM's in just couple of hours :D The order numbers have been forwarded to our end-user shipping.
Anyways, here are the pics:

Look's sweet. I think this may be your best block yet.
Very sharp looking block. I am loving it!
I've just ordered mine.
:D
Hi,
Just been reading the instructions of the EK 7970 block.
This will be my first EK block installation.
The above part from the manual.Quote:
EKWB recommends using small drops of electrically non-conductive (for example: GELID GC-Extreme™ or Arctic Cooling MX-2 ™/ MX-4 ™) thermal grease on each phase regulator (that is being covered with thermal pad) in order to even further improve the thermal performance of the EK-FC7970 LTG series water block.
Q1: Is this necessary / recommended ?
Q2: Has it been proven to help temps?
Q3: When it says small drops on each phase regulator. Is that on the phase regulator itself before the pad is placed or on the top of the pad that meets the block? or to place grease on both sides of the thermal pad?
Q4: Might sound noobie... but what parts are the phase regulators ?
thanks
Does anyone else feel the circles are better representative on this block because of the sheer size and amount of different cuts/heights? I actually like it, helps break it up visually. If it were the old style, it would look quite plain with just a slab of acetel covering it all.
I know exactly what I will be doing with my waterblocks the second I get them :yepp:

Believe it or not but we have a green light on stock status! :D
Is that before or after all of our pre-orders? lol
After :)
Light is yellow now lol...looks like business will be good for you with these lightnings
Got my 7970 Lightening block today. Looks very good indeed :)
Looking forward to getting it installed
tiborrr, will you be making these blocks avail in retail shops or just at the EK store?
They should start popping at our resellers in about a week at latest.
I can't believe how fast the shipping was....they weren't kidding when they said 3 days, but what really surprises me is that counted the weeked. Shipped on Friday and I have em in hand on Monday!!!! Very, Very nice!!
I just got all four installed.....they look AWESOME!!!

Monstruous! What you can say about the temperatures? I can see that you're probably using the card on serial configuration, toghether with the cpu and the ram...
Temps are zero degrees...my entire build is on hold cause frozengpu forgot to include G1/4 plugs in my order and I don't have any spares layin around :(
Im running one loop on a monster 9x120mm res with 18 fans in a push pull config. It blows alot of air and is dead silent:

Mine came in today as well but havnt been able to even open the package as I'm still at work. You have no idea how anxious I am.lol
@l88bastard: Wroom wroom! :D
@l88bastard: is that a completely sanded MM cube?
