Crunching comparison 2600K and 3770K

Thought it wouldn't do any harm to have this info so anyone who has these feel free to add anything.

I have my 3770K in an Asus 5 gene and would be happy to recommend that MB. It is my first with UEFI so I have been learning. Overclockers dream, very forgiving and will clock ram for fun.

So, the 3770k in the gene currently running 4.7 so that comparisons are easier. It has 8gb 1600 samsung green ram running 2200 10,10,10,21 at the moment. I may get that faster or tighter...we'll see

for comparison My 2600k is in a ud4 running @ 4.7 with 4gb corsair 1600 ram running 7,8,7,24 and has one Samsung 103j 1TB HDD the same type fitted to the other rig

First observation is that hooked up to the same cooling and using the same water blocks and Tim, the IB is running an average of 10 degrees hotter which makes me wonder if reduced clocks may be in order in hotter climes.

It will take a week to get some results from the 2600K as just now it is on sustainable water only so bear with me on that but I think that completion times should give us a clue here

From memory I would say that Hcc completes in around 0.1 hours quicker ...The few results so far show a range of 0,89 to 0.99hrs to complete

EDIT:Now that things are stable and before I start presenting results some final info;

I consider the slight improvement here could be both mem speed and cpu imc related and as such I should not try to match as this is just better performance from newer tech/availability of cheaper higher speed ram.

Voltages: The SB 2600K has been at this voltage for a year. The IB 3770K was LinX and Prime stable on 1.26 but gave me errors so Bumped higher for safety which has pushed the temps up again. This needs more time to find the true safe crunching voltage.

Max ambient today was around 25°-26° From the above the SB max average is 56° IB max average is almost 68°

Incidentally although you will see differing completion times, WCG shows the following TARGET completion times;

2600K = 3:34:09 and 3770K = 3:51:27

Great post OC! :up: I'm, afraid you may be the only one to provide an apples to apples comparison. All my 2600Ks are on air in the 4524mhz range. 1.28-1.335 v-core. 1 3770K is on water, the other 2 on air. 2 @ 4600+ 1 @ 4500. I can post pix of 1 week production for 3 of each if you think it will add to your thread. :)

It occurs to me that the other information that needs to be gathered is that of efficiency. If I were to run the 3770K so that completion times for projects were approximately the same, is it the opinion of you guys that the points awarded would be approximately the same??? If so then we then start to require the power use info....

I should have a decent result on the overclock by the end of this weekend to show power use as things stand.

It would be helpful to define some constants for such a comparison. Personally I'd go for same core voltage and same (stock or close to it) clock speed to get a good base comparison of both power consumption and arch instruction efficiency, then wind the clocks up and see how they each scale.

my 2600k @4,2 gets about 37,45points/hour on cfsw. from what i have seen the ivys gets the same bench scores. but i am not sure how the score is factored in.

I have just switched to all projects for a day or two to get some sample times. cache size is 2 days so before we get to those I need to know what people think should be the constants?

clock for clock? (this is what I have now with the exception of ram speed. I have another set of samsungs if we need to do that)

Volts to Volts? (Difficult maybe unless I slow the 2600K a bunch)

Temp to Temp?

Match times for completion??? (may take a while to set up)

Match Gflops??

EDIT: I know it is the middle of the night there but when you get a chance post up those results DA, to satisfy my curiosity about points awarded at different speeds

It's going to be difficult to get an absolute power rating from different systems... Maybe you should take a "base rating" with each system, then OC one a little to match the other chip, taking note of the power draw change. IDK seems like a lot of work but I think this is some great information OldChap! :up:

I'm running a 2600k and 3770k both at 4.2ghz and both at 1.225vcore. They pull the same power from the wall at about 140watts. It'll take about a week or so to see the results for comparison.

I just checked the kill-a-watt and the Ivy has actually used .4 more kwh than the Sandy (39 hours)... however the Ivy machine has a PCIe GPU installed where the Sandy is using the integrated graphics.

so a 550ti pulls like 15-20 watts in idle. in 39 hours thats ~0,6kwh. no really much of a difference anyways.

Those numbers would make sense then. Showing that in 39 hours the Ivy was more likely even with the Sandy or .1~.2kwh less on power consumption.

Is this a simple way to check graphics power use?

PUT any card in pc; measure power.

Add the card in question in second slot; Measure power draw.

Subtract the first figure from the second.

I need to get an adaptor for the Gene from hdmi or display port to vga or dvi to cut down on having a card installed

There's a few places here. I normally use Techbuy but I'm not exactly up on all the latest water cooling so I'd be hard pressed to tell if they had a good range or not.

With a 5870 graphics card fitted and running at 4.7 with cpu volts of 1.248v I find the Kill-a-Watt showing around 190-200 watts at the wall but this is with an old server psu.

EDIT: Digging around for info. I found that the idle power consumption of the graphics card is 27 Watts.

These figures I will update as soon as I get a new lead (hdmi to vga) which will enable me to remove the gpu and a new seasonic (more efficient).

Having found a better cpu voltage I have updated the earlier post regards temperatures (now around 10° higher than SB)

Had a few invalids and errors so I will be also updating my second post re: times and points now that I have new ram timings. (9,10,10, @ 2133)

Hopefully I can also provide some interesting numbers. I had a 2600K at 4.6Ghz 1.34v (rig that is still in signature) and I switched it out to a 3770K at 4.7Ghz 1.28v.
I could not get 4.8Ghz stable at all. I went up to 1.35v but temps would get to 99C with IBT so I gave up. Except for the CPU everything stayed exactly the same, even memory settings etc.

The 3770K uses between 35-40W less than the 2600K which is better than I hoped for as the 3770K is equivalent to a 2600K at ~4.9Ghz (cinebench r11.5 gives me 9.55 point is you want to compare).
The temperatures however are ~15C higher. Using a EK supreme HF and PA120.3 I get 88C max when running Intel Burn Test but realistically never saw higher temps than 79C when running BOINC and gaming etc (Realtemp TJmax 105C / ~25C ambient)

The 2600K did ~46000 points/day running all projects and I will see what the 3770K will do but it will probably take a few days for the old WU's to clear.

I will also switch out my motherboard for a P8Z77-V Pro soon, and I will then do a comparison at 4.6Ghz if you guys prefer this. I know 4.6Ghz is stable at 1.25v or lower. If you guys don't have a preference I will do the comparison at 4.7Ghz as that is the more interesting comparison for me personally because it will be running at that speed.

So far my Sandy is producing about 6,000 more points per day than the Ivy while pulling the same power from the wall.

So it sounds like, at best Ivy does about the same PPD with a negligent difference in power consumption. If so, I think I'll skip my planned upgrade to Ivy and just stick with the sandies this time around.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised after more testing to see that Ivy/Sandy produce the same at equal clock/voltage settings.

Not so sure that is true. For the same power I would expect to get 10-15% more output, at least looking at things so far, however, some projects gain and some loose a little so maybe...... Whether that actually converts to points too remains to be seen. It will probably take until later next month to be sure. At that point it should be possible to do things the other way around and match output in order to see what temps and power is being used by a 3770K and how much is being saved that way.

I am noticing a broad variance in completion times on both rigs, Does anyone think it might be advantageous to select each project in turn for a couple of days each?

In my case there is a very large difference between the two. 40W less consumption and an expecteded 5-10% more output is a lot to me.

So, for anyone running a comparison it's really apples to oranges unless we are using the same PSU, Motherboard, dGPU (if present), peripherals etc... as well as working on the same targeted set of work units or... just accepting any work units and utilizing a longer testing average such as a 2-3 weeks. I think I might run the 2600k machine for a week or so to get an average and then put the 3770k in that same machine and do the same. Currently thought my Sandy kicking the crap out of my Ivy.

i guess you can do 4 days for each project except cep 2 (variance in runtime for my 2600k is 3,5h-10,5h) on a 2770k and a 2600k, everything else stays the same. try and write the completion times down and average them as usual. i would imagine that ivy comes out as more efficient and more results, everything else is just icing on the cake (eg ppd).

Got one more Stability test to do tonight then maybe it will stop the couple of compute errors in the last 24 hours even after passing LinX x 10 and 4 hours Prime. So at the end of the week latest I will start on 1 project at a time, 2 or 3 days each.

Sorely tempted to try changing the Intel tim but somewhat nervous of removing the ihs. Seems worth it though for a potential gain of 20°

I've done it once on an AMD Opteron but that only required a fine blade and a steady hand, there was no soldering involved. I removed it and replaced the TIM (used ICDiamond) then put it all back together. It gained me a few degrees but nothing I HAD to have. I was crapping myself the whole time that I might kill the chip.

I took the lid off my old Opteron 165 because its temps were out of control. I never put the lid back on, I just did an old-school heatsink on the die mount with some arctic silver 5. Worked just fine once I modified my heatsink's mount to work with the topless CPU.

Mine's a 185 and I could never get the mount sorted without the IHS. Doesn't matter now, it's been reliable ever since.

I've tried popping the top on my 3770k and I can't get anything under the lid. Surgical blades, exacto knives, razor blades.... I even tried my SOG Visionary and a small hammer :D
For the life of me I couldn't get any blade between the lid and the chip.

i dont have the money to buy another 3770k if broken, but dang. with that stuff i could push my chip stable higher

use the liquid metal "paste". it gave some ocers 100-200mhz (not sure which) of additional headroom with lower temps. a 10°C difference didnt result in any higher oc.

Went to Lowes and picked up a pack of TaskForce scraper blades and a Kobalt snap blade retractable knife. I used the scraper blade to work the corners with the CPU standing on it's side blade pushing down rocking back and forth. Then connected the corners with the knife. Took about 10 minutes to do the first one. I've done 3 more since for other people which took about 5 minutes. Takes a lot longer to get that crappy glue off though.

From the results people have posted they are getting higher more stable clocks due to the temp decrease alone. Some TIM works better than others but if you reduce idle and load temps by 10c you will get better clocks.

Prior to removing the IHS I wasn't really able to go above 44x. Currently I'm running 47x @ 1.325 vcore. I'm not sure it's stable though. Seems to be crunching away but when I opened Chrome and clicked on my XS bookmark I got an Aww snap message that it failed to load the page. Clicked again and it's been working fine. I got this message on WCG client also:

I'll do this with the next one I buy. I want to try a comparison of intel paste with ICD, mx4 and liquid pro. followed by Liquid pro with ICD, mx4 and Liquid pro. Anyone used that Indigo extreme?

I definitely wasn't stable with 47x @ 1.325 vcore and I don't see the point in going further since I wouldn't use a vcore any higher than that for 24/7 anyway. So I stopped it back down to 46x and I'm running @ 1.275 vcore right now. 200mhz improvement by replacing stock TIM with AS5. Not too shabby.

IB is ALL about the cooling I reckon. Using the MOAF and rad with warm ambient today I have air in 23.5° and water out is 24.5° giving me an average core temp of 63°

It may be chip dependent but if you can keep temps low I think you may need less volts

I agree. I'm currently stuck with Corsair H100 as my best method of cooling.... it's a great compact system but obviously it's not going to handle much of an OC on IB.

OC, not sure how much difference it makes if any, the latest version of Real Temp is 3.70 and you are using the GT version designed for Gulftown.

Update the software and ran them side by side ....No difference in temps shown on either machine. Maybe GT is just wider for more cores?

When you get done with the current battery of tests @ 4700, perhaps you can drop the v-core to stabilize clocks to 4600? I currently have 1 3770K @4500, 1 @4600 and 1 @4700. The one that got bumped to 4700 is stable but has been producing about 300 ppd less than the lower clocked chips. :( There appears to be no difference in points with the same projects between 4500 and 4600. Oddly the chip at 4500 needs the most v-core for stability. 1.240 It also has the worst cooling. ( Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO) :shrug: Still gathering data.

In case anyone is wondering, 4600 is taking 1.232 with the Thermalright Silver Arrow. 4700 is taking 1.224 with an Apogee HD and Alphacool NexXxos UT 60 240 full copper rad.

Edit: Of course as soon as I posted this, the highest clocked rig put up 54K to 48K to 47K. :rolleyes: MY IBs all have DDR 3 1600. Soon to be remedied. :) It's looking like I'll have to wait 30 days and compare RAC. :shakes:

A lot of comment I have seen leads me to believe that to some fairly important degree temperature plays a part in what is in fact a stable voltage.

For mine;

1.248v = stable LinX at around the 110 GFlops level
1.26v = stable Prime95 6 hours
1.27v = 1 restart crunching mixed wu's in 24 hours
1.28v = stable mixed and now the first 2 wu types for 4 days.

I need to let the rig get to a position in the chart at this speed and, as the two will be doing the same wu types for that period (they are on the same profile) I believe that too will be a good indicator. Once I am in that position I can drop the clocks as you requested if you wish but I feel you might get some mileage out of doing a similar test.

Put yours on the same profile, run a couple of days of each project then change to a new one. By the end of around 2-3 weeks you should be in a position to see what is working.

Incidentally I have my internet on for 3 hours a day now in an attempt to see if I can also see how many wu's complete in that 21 hour period for each machine. Probably of better use for Cancer wu's.

We can discuss your requirements some more at the end of this sequence of testing.

I have exactly the same experience as you. My chip is Linx stable at 1.25v, but only at 1.29v it is 100% stable. I found that a nice way too find out if you are completely stable is looking in windows "event viewer" and then under "custom views" -> "administrative events". If you see some WHEA-logger warnings there, it is probably not stable, even if Linx or other tests say so.

And I think you are right that temperatures influence the stability. I de-lidded my 3770k and it is stable at 4.7Ghz 1.29v 67C while before it was not 100% stable at 4.7Ghz 1.29v 88C.

Although bigger this seems the better format. Let me know if it needs adjusting, if having the data rather than just the results serves any purpose... stuff like that

Question; Need to crunch WU's that use a lot of memory during this test.

In view of the fact that the 2600K rig is only fitted with 4Gig should I save those tests until the end, then install 8Gig the same as in the 3770K or is there another better way???

that depends how much the wu require. you can run only 2 wus and find out how much they take if it is ram limited safe it for last and then run it with 8 gig. for approximation use the wu that uses most ram.

Well, even though they tell us that clean energy requires a bunch of memory it seems that it is not the only one....

CEP2 Mem =1,024 MB Disk = 2,048 MB
DDDT2 Mem = 1,024 MB Disk = 250 MB

Maybe I should run 2 tests with the 2600K; 4G and 8G

So I now have 10 days of solid uninterrupted data from my 2600k @ 4.0ghz 1.225vcore.
Average of 150 watts from the wall, average of 61c/26.7c ambient, with an average of 41690 points per day and average of 56 results per day

My 3770k is now in the same machine at the same settings under the same cooling. I'll let it run for about 17 days and compare the last 10 days.

:ehhm: Talked to a little birdy about that - said that chips (he thought since Nehalem, but not 100%) will actually put unused sections to sleep when a parameter gets too far outside of it's limits, and only wake back up when something needs it. Because of that, even though you can use the whole chip, you waste cycles while it starts up. Could be caused from volts being too low or temps too high (even if your cpu temps as a whole are good-the ones you can measure using software, certain internal temps might be too high-temps you don't have access to monitoring.)

Edit: and temperature has a significant role in stability at given voltages... I don't have my book on me (left it in Austin) but for those interested higher temperatures cause vibrations (called phonons), which in-turn cause more scattering of the electrons passing through the transistor (basically, more vibrations means more collisions slowing the electrons down as they travel). This causes the circuit to transition more slowly - and if it is too slow for the given clock, you get an error. Raising the voltages makes the electrons travel faster through the transistor by giving them more initial energy. Because of this, the circuit transitions more quickly. The problem arises when these high energy electrons do happen to scatter - they release this excess energy as heat, causing more phonons and increasing the effects of scattering in a downward spiral. At our points in volts/temperatures/material parameters, we are trying to overcompensate for the additional clock speed by giving the electrons significantly more starting energy than they are supposed to have in the designated transistor. This causes a substantial increase in scattering through increased temperature, which we then try to correct for with our massive coolers. If anyone's actually interested let me know, otherwise i'll end my rant...

Waiting for a bunch of validations just now so just for the record I got a few CFSW betas on each machine .... not enough for a page print but completion times were 0.62 and 0.63 for the 2600K and 0.59 for the 3770K so again falling around 5% advantage to the IB cpu

Wfo; did you do some tweaks? I see your higher clocked rig improving and the whetstone numbers up a bit

So in my testing with everything being the same except the CPU installed the 2600k produces just over 1000 points per day more than the 3770k. 1000 ppd is most likely within a margin of error in testing. The 3770k did consume 20 watts less than the 2600k while producing about the same output. One thing to note is that it is more likely to find a 2600k or 2700k that will clock much higher than the 3770k at the same voltage. So it still may be advantageous to go with the 2600k/2700k being that it will be significantly easier to cool and most likely clocking much higher.

Another note.... I was running a 2500k @ 5.0GHz and it was not able to keep up with the 2600k or 3770k @ 4.0GHz. So a 1000MHz clock advantage didn't make up for the lack of HT. I thought that was interesting.

Both. Obviously the runtime on each individual job is completing faster but apparently not fast enough to make up for the additional 4 threads with the 2600k or 3770k. The HT chips are completing more jobs and resulting in ~4000-5000 more ppd. Pretty impressive for HT technology.

The 3770K has had some issues with GFAM (invalids) and today two errors on CFSW ....

Got to the bottom of the problem (I hope)... Had set a voltage within windows then not transfered it to BIOS after testing.... Thank goodness for taking copious notes ;)

The new type CFSW WU's sure do complete fast (under 40 mins) so if you are looking to increase your number of wu's completed total.....

I believe there are some new ones for other projects too (GFAM, SN2S, DSFL) so perhaps it is better that those results from the older type have not been charted yet.

After a bunch of issues that it seems were not all my fault I have revamped post 3 to summarise what I have so far.

There have been projects with no work, projects changing their app version, in fact you name it I seem to have run into trouble with it. You only have to see what it did to my 2600K averages to realise this has not been smooth sailing

I need to let things settle for a while before I attempt the last few projects.
