New Plextor M3 Pro: push Marvell, push :D

The M3 Pro Series uses high-grade 24nm Toggle Flash memory, includes updated firmware, and boasts a new 7mm height form factor for use in ultra-slim notebooks. Sequential read and write speeds have been bumped up to 540MB/s and 450MB/s, respectively, and random read/write speeds have gone up about 7 percent to 75,000/69,000 IOPS.

The M3 Pro Series will be available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities in "early 2012." No word yet on price.

how reliable is the marvell controller? im guessing anything is more reliable than sandforce.

Most non-Sandforce SSDs enjoy equal or better performance and better reliability. The Crucial M4 and Samsung 830 series SSDs currently sit on top of the performance/reliability curve. What bad start? The Crucial C300 was the first widely available SSD to use the Marvell controller (that I recall), and that was a great SSD. Then came the Intel 510 and the Crucial m4, two other excellent SSDs. The Corsair Performance 3 (the predecessor to the Performance Pro) was not bad either. I cannot think of a single SSD with a Marvell controller that was bad.

Bad start?

No-Sandforce ssds consumer are: Indilinx Barefoot/Everest (Vertex Plus/Octane), Intel 320 series, Toshiba (Kingston V+100), JMicron (Kingston V200) and Samsung (470 and 830 series) and ALL have worst performance.

Just only Samsung 830 can pair Marvell controller (some test win, sequential write, in other lose, 4K).

And for reability, just only Intel x25-M G2 can beat Crucial C300:

Plextor have posted some benches on their web site, including AS SSD, which for some reason they made nearly impossible to read. It looks like 4K read is 31.73MB/s and sequential read 493.25MB/s. This has got to be the fastest SSD on the market at the moment?

I'm liking what Plextor is doing. If you're shopping at 128GB, the M2S is the way to go, but at 256 the M3P is what you want.

Interestingly, I had initially thought Samsung's 27nm and Toshiba's 24nm to be quite similar, but I do not think this is the case.

Oh, and I also thought it not out of the realm of possibility that Marvell could be powering Cherryville. Especially when you consider that steady state performance is much better with Marvell than Sandforce... by a lot.

You know, I think the M3 64GB is using 32gbit devices (similar to the 830).

The Plextor M3P has not been officially released yet, at least not in the US. If you want to see the specifications, you can look at them on Plextor's Asia website (but not US or UK):

Judging from the CDM in the review Gilgamesh linked to, it seems the performance of the M3P is very close to that of the M2P. So the move to smaller flash does not seem to have been an issue for Plextor.

Since the Corsair Performance Pro is almost identical to the Plextor M2P, I wonder if Corsiar will simply switch the CPP to using the Plextor M3P, or if Corsair will introduce a new model to be a rebadge of the Plextor M3P. Either way, I guess the Plextor will be a better choice than the Corsair, because Plextor is offering a 5 year warranty (vs. 3 years from Corsair), and Plextor has released some minor firmware updates for the M2P, but Corsair has no firmware updates for the CPP.

If you don't have a specific need for a certain speed (you'd know if you did), then no, you probably will not notice the difference.

I don't know whether the M3P's smaller versions will use 32Gbit devices, though the M3S's smaller cap drives surely benefits from them. I thought it noteworthy as I thought this was one area in which Samsung had an advantage -- if they want to put 32gbit devices in 64/128GB drives, they can just make up a batch of appropriate NAND. I'm thinking the M3S would be a good testing drive -- it seems like a dead ringer for the 830 64GB.

The M3S does use about half the power of the M2P (from what I've seen).

I wonder if Corsair is just rebranding the Plextor drives.

I'm with johnw on this. Truth is, sometimes I have a hard time telling which SSD in my system is which particular drive, at least based on performance (I rotate through quite a few SSDs on a weekly basis).


Besides, the Plextors are sorta hard to find, period. Newegg has them, then doesn't, then posts ridiculous ETAs for new shipments of out-of-stock drives.

The big difference is the Toggle Mode DDR interface, which has increased from 133MT/s to 166MT/s and the two DDR3 cache buffers with a total capacity of 512MB.

Yes. I think that only difference is nand type and perhaps firmware "hacking" (M3P vs M3 vs Corsair).

I'm happy with Corsair Performance Pro 128GB, but Plextor PX-256M3P is VERY tempting for my next notebook/ultrabook (7mm height)

The M2P had a short list of SMART attributes and Plextor is the one that writes the FW on both drives.

The M3 and M3 Pro run about the same when both drives are half full. That is where performance really matters, when you are really using it.

Tweaktown could do a lot better than PCMark Vantage for the "drives with data testing". It is not at all clear that such a benchmark is representative of how the SSDs will behave in real usage.

You should really do some SNIA steady-state tests (4KiB read and write, sequential read and write, and 50% read/write mix). As for "drives with data testing", you should do some real-world tests like copying files on drives with data, booting and starting applications, reading and writing large video files, games level loading, etc.

I wonder if the 128GB M3P wouldn't actually be a little faster on QD1 4K's.

And those access times in AS-SSD are just sick.

I think the M3P is unquestionably the all-around fastest 128GB drive in existence at the moment.

I doubt that, since QD1 4KiB random read times depend almost entirely on latency to read 4KiB from flash. The only time I can see cache making a difference is if the benchmark is not using a large enough test file and/or not random enough LBAs, in which case you could get some repetitive read cache hits.

i would be inclined to agree with the M3 being uber. i have one and it is FAST as hell!

The M3 Pro review went up today at TweakTown. The drive is very fast across the board but still a little behind the newer SF drives when half full.

Another bad ass drive will hit review sites in very early April. I can't say which one or if it is a revolution or evolution but something big is coming.

StorageReview look at the 256GB Plextor M3P. I am impressed by how well the Plextor does in their steady-state (aka "Enterprise") tests. The Plextor absolutely crushes the competition in all the write-based steady state tests, and it comes in 2nd to the Samsung 830 on the read-only web server test.

By the way, I suggest ignoring the SR "real world" test results, since they are writing easily compressible data that is not realistic at all. In the article discussion, Kevin says that they are planning to introduce incompressible data in a future version of their "real world" tests.

I think the M3S and M3P at 256GB are pretty close. They're not all that different performance wise (I believe). The random performance is a little better I think. The big performance difference is seen at 128GB.

I'm considering this drive. Does anyone know if the M3P has a manual trim tool? (example: intel ssd toolbox for intel drives)

There is no manual trim tool for this drive but I think it isn't necessary since GC is also very good.

No need for additional tool in my opinion.

Don't worry, in a few weeks OCZ will release a firmware update and make you wipe everything off your SSD.

It could actually be one of three drives, but I know that the three that I'm thinking of are using Marvell (in one form or another).

There are several really good drives in the works right now. That said, my statment is true and things will be better next week. Then again a few weeks after that.

I think Marvell is behind the mask as well and am glad to hear from someone who thinks so too.

I put it on my M3p (1.01). I didn't really see much difference, and I did some quick before and after benches. But I'd just keep the 1.00 fw.

I have noticed that the availability of the Plextor M3Pro models is strange. For a while, newegg had an exclusive in the US. Even now, no one is cheaper than newegg, and there are not as many retailers as there are for most other SSDs. I expect Plextor still has some sort of exclusivity or minimum-price deal going with newegg.

Even with the sales tax, you're still coming out ahead. Trying to find any of them is hard enough most days, so if you want one, just get it from Tha Egg.

Are these drives having issues with Areca hosts (particularly the 1800 series)?
I've read the Vertex4 doesn't work with Areca cards and the Crucial M4 had this issue forever until recently addressed with a firmware update.
I've yet to find any posts about the Plextor drive and Areca hosts. Anyone know for sure?

I'm about 87% certain that they do. I expect this could change within a month or two though.

you can buy them from Plextor america 389.00 i think it is also off fleabay ships from newegg same price as site/ newegg is still the cheapest
by several $$

Just today I've installed 2 M3P 256gb in raid0 on an Areca-1880 controller (fw 1.50). Worked perfectly singledisk and in raid0, everything detects okay with fw 1.0 and 1.03 on the drives
Works in SATA600 mode aswell.

One of the SSDs had fw 1.0 and it still worked? In other words, the 1.01 fw update to "improve drive compatibility with SAS cards" is not necessary to use M3Ps with the Areca 1880?
