Evga Untouchables Rev0.1 testing on GTX285 + other vga's

I tested last weekend a Untouchables Rev0.1 10+3Phase mounted on a Evga GTX285 for the GPU.

first i tested it on Dice, to see how it reacts etc...
And must say :

Evga, DAMN SWEET JOB that you made this thing.

Next runs will be on LN² and hopefully take good places with the gtx285 on hwbot.

i was on max of vga, benching at -180°C @ 1.6vGPU, 1.61vGPU didn't run or 1Mhz higher.

now sacrifice other vga, it's a Evga Untouchables VRM.

Would be nice to see video card PCB's built with this in mind so you could plug it in as an extra VRM without modification ;)

that is one huge abortion. i mean sweet clcoks, but holy-mother-of-god that thing is impractical. lemme guess, it'll be $129 when its released too.:shrug:

Most benefit will be on low-end/middle-end and dual-GPU cards, which always limited on power, or motherboards (for example 775 boards for cedarmill OC)
GTX 590 which I overclocked with only 1.2V using two EPower's was able to hit more than 1000mhz w/o hassle.
On old cards like G92, G71, G80 using UT can get from 50-100 to 200+ MHz, depends on conditions and GPU.

Of course, using this is straight way to kill your mobo/gpu warranty, so only for advanced users. Using is simple, just basic soldering and basic PWM controller function idea is need, no need to have PhD to use these :D

hey tin i have a suggestions, instead of making the user have to use the EVBot why not just put on a trimmer for VGPU and VMEM and then pads and connector for a DMM? Is that not more practical than having to use EVBot?

You want to be able to control VID rather than ANY ill-thought FB mod (trimmers), the EVbot is kinda handy for that. ;)

JacobEVGA on OCn stated that they will have a guide to use trimmer instead of EVBot.

IDk i personally like trimmers for voltage control, but that is only if i have a DMM hooked up at the same time. I feel like its more hands on, which I like. Much easier than using software and comparable to a control OC panel like EVBot.

Also Switching Frequency on the Volterra is controlled by resistance on pins? or is it programmed? I know on intersil PWMs they use a certain amount of resistance on a certain pin, might be like this on the volterra. On Chil i think its a user selectable register.

Switching frequency on Volterra VT1156 e.g. is controlled by resistance on R_FREQ pin, but I don't know if it's the same for newer controllers.
I just stopped at HD4890 level, lol. Newest card I have is GTS450, won in a competition.

On the Volterra VT1165(i think you meant 1165) R_FREQ (Pin 27)

IDK if this thing uses the 1165, and i don't know how many would want to solder a wire to a tiny pin, but you would need someone like Tin who knows the PWM layout to comment further. I see no reason tho that the switching frequency can't be controlled manually as well.

Messing with feedback with plain resistors is never high quality, it just "good enough" to work for some cases.

Best is VID/digital control, no matter Volterra, Intersil or CHIL/IR, because voltage control affects lots of domains inside PWM, like droop compensation, overvoltage, overcurrent protections, error compensation and efficiency. That's why EVBot exist, and why modern PWMs all have digital control and adjustment.

Do you get paid every time you mention an eVGA product, suggest someone buys one, or try to talk one of their products up?

you are talking about changing PWM, Voltages other then a EVbot, but still you whant high quality adjustments?

Read what Tin says 2 posts above, that just says everything, nagging that a Evbot costs to much etc,
then you shouldn't buy a Untouchables, because you also need a soldering iron, caps, and some other stuff of HIGH Quality.
It all cost money even the low quality trimmers.

I never said anything about trying to bypass the eVBot ;) My point was that, basically, I would not trust a 10 ohm trimmer because it's so close to a short circuit. If the wiper slips, it's game over. For 10 ohms, for satety, I would wire up a set of jumpers and add either a 1 ohm fixed resistor or a short, depending on what output I wanted. Noise hell? Yes. Do I trust it to not fail? Yes.


My problem/concern/hesitation is that here is a product designed for low-end GPUs that costs 6-7x as much as the card.

I would like to see eVGA have MUCH better availability all over Europe, that way, inter-shop price wars came help the consumer. At the moment, the availability of some products is so bad a shop can charge as much as they want for it because there is zero competition. That doesn't help eVGA either in terms of sales ("it costs HOW much? Not buying it") or bottom line (eVGA sells to distro for X, by the time it hits retail, it's gouged to 50% higher than X.)

Just avoid using the trimmers for voltage if you can help it dude. Not worth messing with the FB loop gain, screws with the reg performance. Unfortunately some people don't grasp this, but I know you can so... Evbot is really the best way.

yea honestly, doing all those mods isn't really that fun to do, the PWM one probably wont be so easy. Id prob buy the evbot to save more hassle, but for those who can't afford it there is another way.
