GIGABYTE's mobo X79-UD3 happens self-ignition and burning!

Today an end-user (japan0827) who comes from Taiwan.

He unboxed the X79-UD3 mobo yesterday but when he wants to keep going
test about the mobo,suddenly amazing event happened!

The mobo X79-UD3 happens self-ignition and burn by it self!

He uses video camera and pictures capture to record all evidences!

IMO, that's sort of his own fault, particularly when we don't know the backround story (ie: voltages, clock speeds, etc).

ANY heatsink is in place to dissipate heat through the use of airflow. In a computer case, there's airflow moving over them which is why most people clue into the fact that out of case testing needs the same type of air movement.

See EVA2000's response above. That's the SMART way to do open system testing. In the video above, you see the clueless way.

Yeah, no airflow over the VRM results in toasty consequences :D

the motherboard had a heatsink.

Ever since time begun it has been known amongst overclockers that if you use water cooling you have to provide additional airflow around the VRM area, and if you are benchmarking or stability testing then are are looking at even greater load and heat which requires even greater VRM cooling.
What happened to that guy is a common mistake that newbies make.

I'd say it was more likely a faulty vrm or whatever that smd that blew off is (can't remember if brown smd bricks are resistor or capacitor).

Or, the fact that its a UD3, not a UD7, and may have been pushed a bit harder than it should have been without a fan on the VRM (as people have already mentioned). I'm not seeing this as being the fault of the manufacturer per-se. It's like me putting nitrous in a honda civic and expecting it to be fine (the analogy being- even though I have some cursory knowledge, I'm a noob at adding nitrous and the honda civic is an entry-level vehicle not made for those sorts of stresses).

Yes the heatsink will absorb the heat at the start, but once the metal reaches the same temperature as the heat source, there will be no cooling from the heatsink unless air blows at it to remove the heat.

defect board out of the box maybe, it not supose to be but sometimes it happen, no luck ...

Interesting set of comments regarding PWM cooling.

Has anyone ever seen a statement on a mobo box (ANY vendor) that says extra airflow IS needed? If the cooling is a must-have, why is it not included? Top-end GPUs don't come with passive heatsinks, expecting the user to add their own fan because it's so obvious.

I hope i'm coming across as devils advocate.

i've sent him a message asking for the bios settings used.

I feel it's his fault, but then again...most high end boards today (save MSI) have had functional VRM over temp shutdown...

Not on a Mobo box, but I remember I had ASUS P5NT Deluxe socket 775, it came with an additional clip on fan for the VRM heatsink, it had a warning that the fan needs to be installed if water cooling is used.

But another point is Mobo makers don't need to say that, it says in the stress testing tools that excess stress will be applied and components can be damaged, a warning like that should make you research what it's about and how to stress test safely.

I see nobody has commented about how USELESS the VRM heatsinks usually are.

They often make poor contact and the TIM can act as an insulator if its too thick or the motherboard bows due to poor isntallation methods.


With that said, the fault lies likely with a faulty component as there is not a rash of them blowing up yet, unlike the Asus Z7S-WS for example of which there were many that did blow up due to the poor VRM design.

The most pointless post here.

It looks like a failed MOSFET. I wonder if Gigabyte is using substandard NIKOS MOSFETS in their high end boards. Would love to see a pic of the VRM MOSFETS without the heatsink on it to determine the make.

The whole point of cooling is because the case is closed. If the motherboard is just sitting out there in the open, why does he need air blowing on it.

The argument that the heatsink was not making good contact with the hexfets... Look at the thread in the Chinese forum. There are more pics. You can clearly see the indentation of the hexfet on the thermal tape. It WAS making excellent contact. I would have gotten rid of the tape alltogether and used paste plus small bolts instead of spring clips, but it still shouldn't burn up in flames like that.

Even cheap MOSFETS just pop and die when they fail. This thing was literally starting to ignite.

Haven't we seen this on more sockets and on other brands too ?...

Just an unlucky board... we had a few other boards (non GB ones ! ) dieing on us within first boot too...

Before drawing early conclusions : do we know the full story/facts ?

Can you show or tell us proof as to why this is a cheap IC manufacturer?
I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt, but I'd like more information. This is I think the third post I've seen about GB X79 boards catching fire. (One of them did it instantly after power on).

That's why I'm staying away from gigabyte products. Too much marketing. They are using crappier vrms on other boards as well, especially on AMD.

They call it Ultra Durable 3...

Finally, today GIGABYTE sent a manager with three research and development engineers went to the end-user's house and gave him some indemnification

I don't know anything about International Rectifier, but I do know that Gigabyte, Asus and MSI have started using cheap "NIKOS" transistors even in their high-end motherboards. You can't trust these people, they're very deceptive, they have to guarantee SOME failure out there in the field to ensure further sales.

I agree, my open bench setup is designed to mimic a compter case and ass such provides fantastic cooling for all parts of the board.

well, it is a small model, not the highend, and he isnt cooling properly, sure it is a bit embarrasing, but I think it is grand that Gigabyte replaces his board & CPU ...
As for RMA; I really wish I could get my X58A-UD3R RMA'd, but unfortunately it seems I cannot. (lost a ram channel, and sure, I pushed the board hard)

Can you explain how these FETs are lousy? IR makes very good products for many companies.
Here is the datasheet for those FETs, and that is a low-side FET, how is that lousy? How is it cheap?

I am pretty sure IR also makes those DirectFETs used on previous ROG boards, the ones that are Copper topped.

You gotta have some sort of wind going around the VRM heatsinks, that is how they are designed for function. Of course BIOS settings can cause that to happen if you set the thermal limits too high.

X79 needs VRm active airflow in some way on most every board if you are going to OC.

You talk about NIKOS transistors, I am sorry but those can be just fine for other component use, as far as I know only cheap AMD boards and some ASRock boards use those for their VRMs, not really on the Intel side do you find cheap VRMs that blow up.

That design is total IR design, it isn't GIGABYTE cheaping out by replacing something in the design with a cheaper MOSFET.

The problem is elsewhere, but it is just a faulty board ... not a question of design, or bad cooling, the mosfets will stop working far before it goes on a temperature it can burn. I dont know exactly what have happen, but well, at the moment we dont see hundred of boards going like that... no worry to have.

My point is that you don't see these types of failures with ST Microelectronics and such transistors.

Yea, IR is probably an OK transistor manufacturer, probably superior to the cheap NIKOS garbage they all use in their lower-end boards, but why do I always get the feeling that the Chinese and Taiwanese are always penny pinching, even on expensive, high end products. And then they complain about desktop sales. They have destroyed the desktop market with their inferior products. First they were nickel and diming us on the capacitors, and now this funny business with transistors.

How much extra would it cost for STM transistors? A few pennies? Save the cheap stuff for the cheap boards. We don't need tantalum capacitors in the VRM MSI (Big Bang series), what we need are decent transistors.

Actually, the chinese capacitors are just the best of the market.... i dont know where you have take that. (ofc, chinese, is a big word, as theres plenty of production manufacturers, and all are not so good )

ST? Ok so when ASRock decides to replace Chil Drivers with ST drivers because its cheaper that means ST is a better company, right? Because Chil PWMs work better with ST parts?

Interesting.... Not the first time... I've not something catch fire like that since my Asus 3870X2. But I've had about 2x boards from Gigabyte with something similar. But Gigabyte were good and replaced both of them.

You know CHiL? The voltage controller used on all of AMD/NVIDIA's reference boards? Yeah, they got bought out by IR a long time ago. Gigabyte has used IR for a long, long time on their boards.

Have you tested all the top models of each manufacturer's boards to find these "NIKOS" Power MOSFETs? No?...didn't think so.

The problem here is not the MOSFET. It is the OCP and OTP circuits to blame. The board should throttle the CPU or even simply shut down when the VRM section gets too hot. This board didn't shut down until it caught fire.

Actually in this instance it was the fet that was to blame. It was a faulty fet, they happen.

It would be nice to have a VRM measuring system that actually worked though. None that I am aware of monitor each fet/driver IC and only measure PCB or heatsink temperatures at the most with reference to temperature. Bad fets often enter thermal cascade long before the PCB or heatsink temperatures reach the thermal tripping point.

I completely agree with you. I really loved my P5Q Deluxe with backplates on the vrm sinks. Thats something that I wish was done more often. Its too bad that stock aluminum heatsinks still sucked. I don't understand why these little aluminum sinks. Once I bolted on a couple of enzotech mst-88 sinks to the stock backplate that was the perfect solution.

best is individual heatsinks, or fets bolted to heatsink (used to see that back in the day..) but its less efficient on the manufacturer end, so we put up with crap :/

I guess I have three things to say, after having read the thread to this point:

1) The guy wasn't being smart. He failed to cool the VRM when using water cooling. If a board he uses like that catches on fire, he should be punished by being denied replacement instead of receiving free upgrades. This guy isn't going to learn that what he did was stupid.

2) In this PARTICULAR case, I have to agree that it's possibly a bad component.

3) For those of you defending him because temperature protection circuits are generally present, you're not standing on good ground. It's not good practice to count on an emergency system to be routinely used in general operation. That alone should make you re-examine your perspective. Since they're popular according to my sig, let's throw in a car analogy! Counting on VRM high-temp shutdown is like driving without breaks because hey, your airbag will save you, right? Just like when it comes to the electronics this analogy is tied to, the answer is "Yeah, maybe." One thing it definitely isn't going to save you from is an excessive peak transient. A FET will just blow up and the protection circuit would have insufficient time to react.

A motherboard which supports CPU's where one of the standard cooling solutions is water NEEDS to have a viable passive cooling solution on their MOSFETs. And I am sure they have, this component as sin0822 so kindly linked the datasheet to, can take anything from -55 - 155 degrees Celsius and operate normally. It does not however have a built in fail safe for over heating. (As far as I can see at least) However you will find this function in more advanced MOSFETs and VRMs like the 78xx series.
So the motherboard needs to have some surveillance on this, and it does, you can check VRM temperature in the BIOS, however it does not have a temperature sensor on each MOSFET so if one gets out of line it can't necessarily throttle back.
Gigabytes fault? Hardly... components fail, it happens, its rare, but this just gets way too much attention.

At least it looks like Gigabyte is taking this issue very seriously as they've started recalling some of their X79-boards. And as a temporary solution to these problems they've released an update to the UEFI/BIOS which limits overclocking and throttles the CPU during stress.

I don't have a great deal of insight into this story but it seems like there might be firmware issues with the PWM on the UD3, UD5 and the Assassin 2. If this is a quality issue or not is of course hard to say, but I remember reading something about there being suspicions of bad quality PWM components also playing a role in this. Anyway, I trust International Rectifier's products (which I believe they use on the UD3, UD5 and Assassin 2?), whether it's the new IR digital PWM or the IR MOSFETs. And I'm convinced Gigabyte will be able to continue using them and that this'll be sorted soon without much of a hassle.

By the way, I find it strange that the UD7 is seemingly unaffected by all this. Doesn't the UD7 use mostly the same digital PWM/components for the VRM as the other boards? Probably not as that would be expensive! :o

UD7 and the UD3, UD5 and Assassin 2 share the same exact PWM, and use the same MOSFETs. THey use them in different quantity, the UD7 has 16 phases, thus the load balance is spread over more MOSFETs.

We should hear a statement later today from GB about this, at least for the uSA.

UD7 and the UD3, UD5 and Assassin 2 share the same exact PWM, and use the same MOSFETs. THey use them in different quantity, the UD7 has 16 phases, thus the load balance is spread over more MOSFETs.

We should hear a statement later today from GB about this, at least for the uSA.

I'm eagerly waiting to hear what they have to say, as this probably isn't going to do wonders for sales of their new "3D power"-motherboards. Gigabyte X79 Ultra Burnable Motherboards? :p On a more serious note however, I like Gigabyte and I trust that they will handle this situation in the best possible manner, I doubt many other companies would go as far as recalling the products for example.

The bios update was released but it essentially cripples your board so you can't overclock or overvolt at all. Only other thing is replacement

I am pretty sure that 99% of what wanted to be said was lost in translation, so those sites that just translated and made statements like board's recalled are a bit overreaching. Cripple BIOS, lol that is a good one since it really doesn't do anything but stop users from setting switching frequency and vcore response high enough to kill their boards. It doesn't change OCP and OTP limits, and your OC wont throttle any more than it did before.

Their P67 boards were very nice and decent quality, only problem were the BIOS bugs and boot loop issues (Hello? where's the onboard 50 cent Chinese made BIOS switch, huh?), but the hardware is fine. They still need to *FIX* the erratic LLC vcore swings with that multi step LLC crap though...F3d/f3g/f3h on the UD4/5/7 had VERY stable and predictable LLC...all they had to do was lessen the vrise under LLC2 at 1.4+v, and it would have been absolutely *perfect.* Instead they :banana::banana::banana::banana: up everything with the multi step LLC, which must have only been tested at low vcore settings (since multi step LLC actually works **very** nice at close to stock voltages).

Give me any socket 2011 board with 6core/12thread highly overclocked watercooled CPU, running IntelBurnTest with BIOS setting that put extreme stress on the VRMs and no air flow to cool the components, and I will kill any board....honest :)

I had the same thing with my P6T6 X58 board. It had a fan which clipped on to the PWM Heatsink and the slip inside the box said it should be used if water cooling or overclocking for maximum stability.

Personally I think the problem presented in the video is 50/50 - Gigabyte should have shut the system down earlier so that the board didn't catch fire and this guy should have fitted a fan to the PWM heatsink. I'm not pro overclocker but even I know leaving a board on a test bench without airflow over the PWM heatsinks is a bad idea.

You got my point wrong, from the video you see a watercooled system, then you see him loading prime95, which is used for stability testing, so water cooling + stability tests makes me assume the system is overclocked otherwise there would be no point to everything he did.
Also using water cooling instead of air cooling makes me assume the system was overclocked quite well.

I replied to you because you said it is Gigabytes fault, I disagree because the act of overclocking alone voids the warranty.

If it were his fault, then how come there is a major recall? I mean this is pretty BIG. And how come Gigabyte replaced his motherboard and gave him a new extreme edition CPU?
Believe me, all this stuff with the new Bios deliberately limiting the boards from overclocking, and this recall directly prove that there's a VRM problem with these boards. I'm waiting for you to explain this recall.

Plus as I also mentioned--which you also failed to address, there have been users who have had the VRM's fry RIGHT after turning on the boards.

With how quickly the FET burned up a fan obviously would not have stopped what happened.

Gigabyte has gone massively down hill the in the last few years, where as Asus seems to have cleaned up their act a touch. The whole 1156 socket debacle where Gigabyte tried to hide foxconn sockets under lotes branded brackets that was it for me. I'm still not a fan of Asus though, knowing them they are just savvier with their cost cutting.

They havent cleaned up the Z7S issue..

There is no major recall, the translation from Chinese to English used the word recall,and some sites went to town on it, and added in their own commentary. Here is how it stands in the USA:

That's how it stands in Europe as well. They state it's due to a BIOS error that doesn't enable OVP when overclocking. Additionally, the affected boards are backed with a 5 year warranty.

This is crazy, is it me or has this been the year of PWM's?

First we had rumours of GTX 570 cards having weak PWM's then followed the 590 cards and their epic PWM failings and now this?!?
I suppose one could also add that this is going to put a dent into Gigabyte and the X79's reputation when it is not really entirely Gigabyte's fault that they were shipped poor PWMs, however they should have tested this as it seems rather crazy that this is happening.

I have also heard that some Bulldozer boards are burning out too
