A fix for Valve CEG games causing BSOD on Bulldozer -issue

I recently found a solution for the issue causing BSOD on systems using AMD Bulldozer CPU.
While I will not go into the specifics but the issue was not hardware related.
The official explanation might or might not emerge at some point.

Games affected (atleast): Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Total War: Shogun 2.

The issue occurs on all motherboards from all vendors, so it is not a Asus related issue either.

Please note that this solution is not official and it has not passed any kind of official qualification.
Therefore neither I, Asus or AMD can be held responsible for any kind of damage, malfunction or performance issues that might occur.
Absolutely no warranty or support provided by me, Asus or AMD.

The official solution will be available after the qualification has been completed.

Get the modified, unofficial bioses:

Asus Crosshair V 9913M-TSSW
Base: 99-13 (10/18/2011)
Modified: M-TSSW (11/09/2011)

Asus Sabertooth 990FX 0810M-TSSW
Base: 08-10 (09/28/2011)
Modified: M-TSSW (11/09/2011)

Use the supplier AMI Afuwin (32 or 64-bit) program to update the bios.
Tick "Program All Blocks" (from Setup tab, block options) option before launching the update process.
Once the update has been completed, shut down the computer and clear cmos.

A small section of the code had to be replaced, but like I said I will not get into the specifics.

It is really up to the motherboard vendors.
The official bios releases usually need to pass the qualification which takes some time.

Any idea if it's feasible for valve to fix it on their end? If they don't fix it on the steam side it will just make a mess as more people inevitably buy motherboards with the current bios version. Even if it's technically an AMD issue Valve should take some responsibility to fix it.

DRM issues are very tiresome as they only punish legitimate customers. :shakes:

The funny thing about this issue is I've seen this happen with more than just games.

I've seen it happen while running Aida,3D mark 11 and while using J River's Media Center, doesn't mean they are connected but it's always the same error.

So we might have to go a little deeper down the rabbit hole? It's good to know this is not hardware related.

I'm curious, have you heard anything from AMD on this issue Stilt? I'm curious to hear what AMD has to say about this, and why none of the big tech sites are delving into this issue. I'm sure the big tech sites think this would hurt AMD as I'm sure it would, but keeping silent isn't the best option as this issue is getting picked up more and more around the net.

We have not come across or heard about of any other BD specific issues than the ones with Valve / CEG protected games.
I´ve done tons of AIDA64 and some 3DMark11 on BD and have not noticed any issues. Can you please elaborate a bit?

I wasn't even looking for issues they just came about through stability testing with the programs I mentioned.:down:

To be fair the CPU was pushed quite high in frequency and somewhat in voltage, but I can't say I've seen the same error almost every time the system BS'd? If you in any way are involved with AMD and you guys choose to burry your heads in the sand and burn the last set of people that have supported you; so be it.

I've seen this a few times in the past with some old P4's but not to the extent it has come up with this chip, and if this is strictly a BIOS issue why doesn't this happen with the Thubans on the AM3+ boards?

Always the same error: A clock interrupt was not received by a ...yada,yada. I've pushed my 1090T pretty hard and have never seen this issue, only with the BD.

Now as far as specific's Aida's CPU Queen test crashed 2/3 times with the same error, but like I said to be fair mostly at higher frequency. I also use other benches to test for whole system stability not just CPU and this is where I throw in 3D mark as I've seen plenty of CPU's that will pass every Prime,ITB or what have you and fail in 1-2 minutes under 3D mark. Not that the CPU is to blame for every crash but yet again, and just with BD I get the "Clock Interrupt Error", sometimes 30's into and sometimes a minute into.

The same issue cropped up with JRiver and while just surfing the net, again both at higher clocks but what is the point of an enthusiast class CPU you can't OC to the limit? Yah no, not temp's, 50 is the max I'll let it go with all cores stressed and middle 40's for a regular 24/7 oc at 100% all cores/threads and I also walk the voltage down as far as I can go when I find a stable 24/7 OC.

So far 24/7 for me is 4.6@1.36 with all cores with memory at a mild OC of 100 or a little over. Changed voltage to 1.33.

Like I said don't know what's related and what's not, but I haven't seen this error in a long time.

FYI, stable is not 24 hrs of Prime95, 1000 loops of Vantage or LinX. Stable is "I do whatever I please and have 30 days uptime" (adjust uptime for different levels of stability). If you can pass prime, linx, vantage or whatever, but crash at games - does not mean the motherboard is to blame.

Strange, cause I have never seen any of the issues mentioned in your previous post. Specifically at AMD's STOCK FREQUENCIES!!!! Anything above stock is never garanteed, and at stock clocks, if you have these issues, something else is wrong. We have several peeps on here running 8120's and 8150's using various boards incuding 990fx and 890fx. I have heard any of them mention your issues.

Well, maybe us here on XS have never had this issue because we don't run any power save features like CE1, etc. I don't think any of those mentioned review site turned these settings off. Maybe it is related to this? All, I know is my setup has been rock soild on on server 2008 R2, Windows 8 Preview and Windows 7. I paly different games and run WCG when ever I'm not using the system. I didn't notice one thing, except that the sub timings on auto for 1333 or 1600 do not work on my 2 kits of Ripjaws, OCZ blackEditions and a Set of Kingston Hyper-X all 4GB kits Don't work. Had to set them manually or the system would Blue screen or lock up after boot. I'll go through those reviews from the mentioned sites and see what they had for setups. I still would leen on the way Windows schedules threads and it not being designed or FX ready. It could also be the APM feature. I have never had this on with my FX setup at any point with ANY BIOS.

Count yourself lucky as this is really annoying. Like Scali says I don't think anyone outside of AMD knows what is going on here? I just hope AMD fixes this quick!

I contacted AMD myself and they still have not got back to me, if they do I'll let everyone know what they think.

Yeah, I have already read that before and I don´t even bother commenting his post since he has obviously not tried it by himself.

I must admit that he got atleast something right: Indeed some of the cracked versions of these games work on Bulldozer even without the fix. This is because the Valve CEG protection has been completely disabled. However there is atleast one cracked version available (from "18 and Life..") which still has the Valve CEG protection active. It is just being emulated in order to get the game running. This version will cause BSOD on Bulldozer unless the fix is used, just like the original one from Steam (yeah, I have tried them both).

There's an alternate clock control timer in the bios that sometimes is more accurate if I can recall the name of it. It may also be worth a try..

The example link you listed said its problem was stemming only from Steam-based games.

You are having the problem all over the place, either because your CPU is defective or unstable. 4600 @ 1.36v might be a little over the edge.

9920 beta bios for Crosshair V by Asus.

It updates the microcode from version 06000613 (08/06/2011) to 06000623 (10/13/2011).

Microcode version 06000613 for OR-B2 stepping is faulty and it is causing the BSOD when Valve CEG protected game is executed.

Using older or newer version will fix the issue.

The modified bioses I posted earlier are using the newer microcode (06000623) ;)

While testing the different microcode versions I did not notice any difference in performance.

Will they release a fix for the 890fx boards as well?

Have you done any comparisons between this and 0810, and noticed any improvement?

0810 isn't all that bad (other than some Turbo wierdness), but bios updates for the SaberTooth seem to be pretty slow in coming compared to what the C5F/E is getting.

Here is the modified 0813 bios for Sabertooth 990FX:

The microcode has been updated to the most recent version (06000624, 10/21/2011).

I have not tested this specific version of the microcode but it should work just fine with Valve CEG games.

Flash as described in the first post.
And clear the CMOS manually after the flash has been completed.

With the 0810 I had random poweroffs of the pc. It powered off and only removal of the powercord for several minutes let me turn it back on. With 0813 there was no problem. Except of that, there is a option to disable IOMMU.


@The Stilt: Thanks, I'll give it a try. Hope the bios works. I don't know if there is a way to recover the Sabertooth from a bad flash, without sending in the Bios chip.

Will this bios work with my 1055T? THe 8120FX are only in South Africa beginning December.

Since the original 0810 did work with my 905e (had to flash from old Bios without Bulldozer support to the 0810) I would say it will work with your 1055T

I just flashed the 0813 and it works perfectly. no 101 @ Steam games anymore. I'll test it a few more days.

This is funny as AMD just made an official announcement yesterday about this, and some people are saying this does not fix anything and can even introduce other issues such as really bad performance on some boards. I also find it very odd that the BIOS they link to for my board is the same one I have but the date keeps getting older every time they issue a BIOS update?

This is all very strange and I don't know that I want to try this BIOS from what some people are saying.

I've never seen the first thing AMD stated as problems nor the third, only the second, but this is what happens with my board.

I'm beginning to wonder if my chip isn't bonkers, why the same error all the time and only with certain programs in certain instances?

Actually on AMD platforms you do seem to get the same error every time with a bad OC.
Infamous 0x00000124 with Deneb, 0x0000008E with Thuban.

I don't even know why you are posting in this thread, about an issue you aren't having because your issue is unrelated to Valve CEG games. I'm not sure if you noticed, but the rest of the world is only having the issue with Valve CEG games and you are reporting it for other programs.

I feel bad for all the people running BD machines without one of these high end boards and having this issue...then you have the group of people that have never updated a BIOS before...

I think the Sabertooth deserves more attention. It's fairly high-end.
I just think CH:V is getting more attention than most due to it being a press release system.

Sabertooth bios (0813)?
Under what conditions can the "performance drop" be seen?

With the 0813MOD there are perfomance drops or lets call it, very poor performance, e.g. in Portal 2 (20 FPs), Saints Row 3 Initiation Station (15 FPs) also the Intro Video from Saints Row (a BINK video) plays only with about 6fps. With the normal 0813 the intro plays well and if the game runs for a couple of seconds it has more fps.
On my Xeon (Signature) with the older GPU these games have around 50-70fps.

But, with the improvements at the Crosshair V Bios, I hope that the Sabertooth will follow soon.

Yeah the performance issues are not fixed by the modded bioses (microcode in 0813 / 9913), just the BSOD problem.
Bios 9921 for Crosshair V is the first one to do it.

The fix will be available on all motherboards which will still get bios updated.
It is integrated in the code base supplied by AMD.

Made a small "program" (Orochi-CEG) which fixes the performance issue in CEG games.

Orochi-CEG

VirusTotal report (check the results by reputable companies...)

It is a temporary fix for the performance issue, it needs to be applied after each reset.
The permanent fix can only be provided by the motherboard vendors.

Also in case the system crashes because of the faulty microcode this fix naturally does not help.

I´ll start providing modified bioses for other boards and brands than just Asus soon.
Not official but they work.

Required system:
CPU: AMD FX 4/6/8-core processor (any stepping).
Motherboard: Any

More updated bioses as promised.
Only the microcode has been updated (to fix the BSOD issue).
I cannot update the base code as I do not have access to the original bios projects (model specific).
Use together with Orochi-CEG program to completely fix the issue.

I suggest using Flashrom program to update the bios (in pure DOS mode via bootable USB drive).
Use command "flashrom -w filename.rom -p internal:laptop=this_is_not_a_laptop" to update the bios.

Special note for MSI bioses: These bioses did not have the BSOD issue as they were using a very old version of the microcode. I updated it to the newest version anyway. DO NOT flash MSI bioses with their integrated flasher found in bios (this is MSI´s own instructions).

Fully fixed bios for Biostar TA-990FXE (99FADB24).
New microcode and new AGESA.

I'm running 9921 and my minimum fps @ 4.8 Ghz/2.4 NB in Counter-Strike:Source are ~15-16...also, character movement is buggy as if there is a netcode fault.

I'm not sure what I need to do to fix this as this is the "fixed" bios...minimum fps with Thuban would sometimes dip into 50 range, I usually hold 110 FPS average plus with large amount of players and maps.

I can try other games like L4D2, Portal 2, to see if it fixes the problem for those...but CS:S is unplayable and I'm now considering switching back to X6 for just that.

Hi, is it possible to mod the crosshair iv formula (890fx) bios with this fix too? It currently has a beta bios supporting fx series cpus.

I already have modified the bios but it has not been tested.
Unless I find someone to test the bios (who has ability to hotflash) you´ll need to wait the official fix (if there will be one).

This is a hard one :(
I´ve tried several different methods to modify the bios and they have all failed.
It seems that there are some kind of special checksum or encryption which prevents AGESA from loading if the microcode is changed.
This does not seem to be any "standard" feature by AMI so it will be hard to figure out.

Just a note for those of us with Crosshair IV formulas, on the 3027 bios I have found I get BSOD if I try to open any steam-ceg game normally. However if I load the Orochi-CEG app then try the games, they ALL work......tried this over 3 restarts now.

So even though it says it doesn't fix the BSOD issue, it does for me....and maybe you too.

It should not work since the code is faulty, however if it does hows the framerates you are getting?

I haven't done much testing, but dow II Retribution campaigns were very smooth on max everything. So far I have gone and made sure every game mentioned on sites where ceg problems were mentioned have run both with and without this app, all bsod my pc without it but with it let me run and so far dow II retribution and dirt3 definitely have good framerates. Still to try others (for framerates).

Downloading Team Fortress 2 now to see how it works with/without the Orochi-CEG app. (Haven't had any problems with any game that I actually wanted to play yet)

However they used the same faulty microcode + old AGESA version so they do nothing to the issue...

Tried the 0901 BIOS, I found it a bit flaky with my system and the memory performance was down it might have been a bad flash but for now I'm back on 0813 and everything is back to normal

Fully fixed bioses are always made by the manufacturer.

Ok, just had the first bsod since running the orochi-ceg app. Got a system crash starting duke nukem forever, restarted pc and ran orochi again (I have it starting with windows) and all worked fine. Been playing through campaigns on dowII retribution, not a flaw.

Any modified BIOS for Asus M5A87?

I just tried BIOS 0803 (2011-12-14) with no luck. Cleaned CMOS, reinstall the game, reintall drivers etc but nothing.

The Stilt, any chances to create a modified BIOS to M5A87?
Looks like is the last motherboard missing in your modified BIOS list.

M5A87 is using older AMI Core8 based bios which I cannot modify.

Someone reported that running Orochi-CEG fixes the issue even if the bios has a faulty microcode.
This SHOULD NOT work, but I have not tested it personally.

Try it and see what happens.

Stilt, yes your orochi-ceg app solve the problem even with the faulty microcode.
It's definitely a fix for us.

This utility worked for me as well

FX-8120 + Asus crosshair IV mobo 3027 BIOS

Deus-Ex HR BSOD'd the PC within 3-5 seconds without Orochi, seems perfectly stable for many hours of gametime after running it :)

I have an M5A88-M with an AMD FX-6100 and am getting unplayably bad FPS in Deus Ex HR.
Someone on steam forums pointed me here and it seems the CEG fix is exactly what I'm after.
However, the link to the orochi-ceg was hosted on megaupload and that site is now dead as I'm sure you know.
Can someone please reupload it somewhere else like mediafire?

edit: I'm currently running the 601 version bios. There's an 801 available on the asus website to download, which is newer, but when I tried it, the computer would just crash and restart if I tried launching deus ex. Every single time. So, I reverted back to 601 (always keep a backup!) and it's running fine (well, everything besides deus ex, but at least the game just has terrible fps instead of crashing the system).

And while I'm here, Serious Sam 3 runs fine with the orochi-ceg app. Would crash at launch without it.
This is without a fixed bios, so the tool does seem work in those cases as well, as someone mentioned already. Even if it shouldn't work ^^

edit: antivirus was blocking it, added it to exclusions and it works fine now.

Running my deus ex on maximum settings with perfect framerate now, so you can add my motherboard to the list of ones it works for if nothing else :D

Also I'm trying to contact asus support to ask them to get a bios update out for my M5A88-M but haven't been able to reach them so far (US live support chat just says 'connecting, please wait' for an hour, UK one is closed for today, I'll try them again tomorrow...)

a bit OT...Stilt, do u have some experience with the latest CPUs FX? Are new batches better or not?

I've contacted ASUS through a couple different channels now and they all told me that they are aware of the issue but because my board is a fairly new model there is no update fix for it yet, though they'll get one out as soon as it's ready. No estimate of when that will be though. Meantime the CEG app keeps things running at least.
