Bulldozer meets ADATA XPG - DDR3 frequency world record!
Hey guys! I was experimenting with Bulldozer over the last few days and was very surprised, that it's not only great for high cpu frequency but also for veryhigh memory overclocks! So I decided to take my latest and greatest ADATA modules out for a spin to get some scores with AMD.
Bench system:
- ADATA XPG - Gaming Series 2.0 - 2400 MHz, CL10-11-10-30
- AMD FX-8150 (8 Cores, 3,6 GHz)
- ASUS Crosshair V (990FX)
- ADATA SSD S511, 60 GB
- Enermax Revolution 85+ (920 Watt)
Well, first I was going for about 2800 MHz with just one module and was pretty difficult to stabilize. But the more time I spent with the system, the better it worked out and I couldn't believe my eyes when i passed the 3000 MHz just for validation ... I mean, on AMD ... who would have thought?! :cool:
So I decided to go on and ended up with a validation of 3200 MHz:

I guess Bulldozer is now in for the race to grab the memory frequency record. It should be not too hard, because this was the first bulldozer I tried. With a little binning and a bit of luck the 3300 Mhz are possible imo! :shrug:
Surprising as this already is, I figured out that the right voltages (not too high, Bulldozer no likey!) and a high (yeah, not too high) ht frequency at bootup can be pretty stable for benchmarks too. As motivated as I was, I plugged in another xpg module and upped the cores to 7 GHz - still no problem for our little Bulldozer! :up:
As a screenshot would not do justice, I recorded a little video. It's made out of to runs cut into one, because during the successful one it was impossible to read anything on the cpu-z tab. So here it is: a bootup at 7,2 GHz with 2880 CL10-13-10-31 2T and a SuperPI 1M run at incredible 7,5 GHz/3000 MHz! I also tried to give a quick insight into the currently applied bios settings.

Regarding the memory modules, they are built with Hynix chips and only single sided (for building 4 gb modules with the same series). ADATA sent me a retail package, so no special binning involved. I removed the heatspreader for you to have a better look:

Update, 9.11.2011
After an awful night of sleep I decided to try out a second bulldozer chip (reaches just 8 ghz on one core, no MHz more ...). It booted up with the exact same settings but scaled way better to cold and voltage. So after 30 minutes of playing around at very high voltages - 1,725 Volt on NB/CPU and nearly 2 volts on the memory - I went over the 3300 MHz barrier and validated the result:
