Corsair Dominator GTX 8 for quad-channel SB-E

"As you know, processors and motherboards for socket LGA2011 is preparing to launch this month. Obviously, any RAM manufacturers could not stay away and they will also launch a host of kits with different capacities and frequencies.
Corsair prepares a quad-channel kit for overclocking enthusiasts and lovers, named Dominator GTX 8. It consists of 4 modules of 2GB each with a specified frequency of 2400MHz with 10-12-10-30 1.65v.
For this, Corsair used high density Hynix chips in Single-Sided configuration."

That is really sad... Single-sided for highest end ram, the overkill super GTX...

Dominator GTX 6 was also single-sided and every stick did 3000MHz easy, so this is not always a bad thing :)

You are right, but, would you ever use GTX6 for other things than CPU-z? I would not.
But I saw a news that got me excited some while back.... I just WISH I could get 2 kits of these.

8gb sticks are way to expensive right now... a 8gb stick is 10x the price of a 4gb stick (same timings).. so for the same price of a 8gb stick you could get 40gb of ram... ;)

Single-sided is easier for the IMC, especially for SB-E which works in quad-channel. This means higher frequencies, the only thing which is interesting is the performance hit but something tells me this will be minimal on SB-E ;)

From what I hear, past 1866mhz is not really gaining, and tighter timings doesnt really gain neither.... But I do not have the platform yet, time will tell.
But half interleave I've never considered a positive thing, except for 3Dmark2001SE in the old days.

Per stick yes, but the total of 8GB I think is enough for 99% of the people :)

Agree, the capacity is not the concern, the impact of half interleave is possible issue...
But you are right, I should have more faith in the vendor, Corsair has tested this quite alot before, and have taken it into consideration - and I hope you are right, after all, it would mean that if buying, it will be a heck of alot cheaper, win/win, cant argue with that..
I am just critical about the impact, that it might have, negative on performance... If it shows that it doesnt have any, I'll go for single sided myself... But honestly; I would be suprised if it is the case..

But I am not all knowing, far from, unfortunately ;)

Would prefer a 16gb kit but I do agree, CAS10 2400Mhz is a little disappointing...

I miss the CAS7 2000Mhz days... They used to run 2300Mhz for benching!

I really wish Corsair would limit the height of there heatspreaders. It limits the CPU coolers you can use on some setups.

GTX is a series, and they have no variance in appearance... They all look exactly the same, except sticker and what is under the hood...... You dont buy GTX because they are beautiful, you buy them because they are the best of the best...

But hope it will do well, however, I expect it will be same as SNB, as for ram...Not for hypers.... If hypers are the bomb for SNB-E, I will be searching one more stick, for certain.

Marc these tall heatspreader/fin combo will be a huge issue on X79 with air coolers. For daily usage users best opt to go for one of them liquid all in one solutions or a real watercooled setup...

I am yet to hear of someone buying Dom GTX to run them on an aircooled setup... Dont even think MovieMan has done that^^

So, I've been running this kit for a couple of weeks now and, honestly, can't say I managed to find a reason why I should go out and buy this kit. Mainly because:

1) It's only 8GB; the standard for SB-E seems to be 16GB.
2) There are several SB-E CPUs that are not even able to run DDR3-2400 frequency, let alone higher and make use of the overclocking margin of the kit.
3) On other platforms than X79, there seems to be compatibility issues.
4) The heatspreaders are so damn high. Some board/cooler combos will not be compatible.
5) CL10, ffs. There are several kits available already that can do DDR3-2400 with tCL=9.

I've no idea about the pricing, but let's be honest. If it's over €200, you might as well go for that 2x 2GB Transcend aXeRam kit rated DDR3-2400 CL10-12-10 and just buy two. You'll spend about €55 per kit; times two that makes €110. Corsair does offer lifetime warranty, though ... so I guess that's maybe one reason why you'd choose the GTX8.

I'm open to suggestions on how to test this kit, though. Maybe I'm just focussing on the wrong things which make me draw the wrong conclusions. If so, I do offer my sincere apoligies. I just want to figure out how to run this kit so I can convince myself it has a place in the GTX line-up! Please, tell me how to run it!!

GTX8 is listed at 499$, so it's slightly over 200€. ;)
I agree with you, GTX2 was a stellar bin, all the other GTX kits were also pushing the envelopes when they were released. This kit on the other hand seems to be quite a bit slower than, for example, G.Skill's offerings. However, rating is one thing, the only important thing is what you can do with them. Are you able to run them at CL9 as well?

You won't hear me say anything bad about their previous GTX kits. Loved the GTX2 (well, loved Leeghoofd's kit(s) ...), GTX3 and GTX6 were/are pretty strong too. So it's not a vendor thing, if anyone would think so.

CL9 'should' be possible. When I say 'should' I mean people say it should, but I can't even get DDR3-2400CL9-12-11 to boot properly.

I was told to use the R4E, which gave me some additional mhz upto DDR3-2520, but only with tCL=11. Maybe I still fail somehow to unleash the true capability of this kit. If anyone knows how to, please tell me :).

Thats probably the most important reason against such expensive premium Ram, as long as you have to pay for the Cpu there isn't much point to very high end Ram if the IMC is a complete gamble...

I am interested in its Dominator GT
Is 2400MHz, 9-11-10-30-1T or 10-12-10-30, at a voltage of 1.65V memory (stable)?

And its CMGTX8 are based PCS IC chips

Nope it will not be stable at 1.65Vdimm... For this price you can buy a 16GB 2400C9-11-11 kit from G.Skill and still have money left for a 120GB SSD.

Even though I was a big fan of the GTX2 kit, these GTX8 should never have seen the daylight. We had an OC academy last weekend and even the 8GB 1866C9 Vengeance kit was stable at 2400C10-11-11 1.7Vdimm, they even went up to 2600 10-13-12... the GTX8's needed 11-13-13 for 2600Mhz on Ivy Bridge... :(

Nope not at 2400Mhz :)

You can probably reach 2400 C10-12-12 with your current kit at 1.72Vdimm.

Think your Corsair contact doesn't seem to be aware of his own product line. To behonest, I already would be surprised if you got a GTX8 kit as replacement at all...
