As some of you may of read over in the P67 Extreme4 thread after chatting with one of my contacts Asrock will be sending me a Z68 Extreme4 to bug-test like some of you Z68 owners have been requesting me to do so rest assured it will get the same thorough diagnosis I gave the P67 Extreme4 :up:

This thread is for any Z68 Extreme4 owners to share their experiences, overclocks, and of course to report any problems they are having which I will then check out, report them to my contacts and give the best possible advice I can :cool:

As per the other thread I would appreciate if you could test an eSATA drive with yours to see if you get the atrocious mouse lag and slowdowns I get with mine which I still haven't been able to resolve.

I am still on the release Bios (1.1) I wonder if upgrading to the latest BIOS will make any difference.

As UEFI 1.34 does something for SRT, I'd say its worth a shot as its kinda in the ballpark of your problem :up:

Fair dos :up: if you don't have any joy I'll add it as the first problem to check when the Z68 arrives. If I can't replicate the problem I'll ask one of my contacts if they have your specific drive to try.

I haven't really overclocked the system "properly" yet :D. I just changed the multiplier to 42 and voila it works! I haven't upped the vcore yet but I will in the future as I try to reach 4.5Ghz and more. Problem is I am married and got a kid too so free time is at a premium as you can imagine ;) :rofl:

It is likely I will just follow your guide once you receive the board so I don't have to spend hours tweaking the whole thing! :)

The only other issue I've had has been with the wake from sleep, which doesn't work (even with no voltage alterations) but I heard is a problem also present in the P67 boards.

You would be correct sir ;) the waking from sleep bug is a problem in intels own firmware code, last I heard intel were aware of the problem and exploring possible options for a fix.

Ket, please, don't spreed this bs about Intel SB sleep bug. With your reputation here people trust you. Asus and Asrock are the ones having sleep problems with SB. If that's coming from your Asrock contact tell him to check with Gigabyte about that.

I am just saying based on the information available to me - in this case a technical support response from Asus a user on the forum was kind enough to share. According to that response the problem lay somewhere in intels firmware code and it effects all boards as a result. If Gigabyte took initiative and found a fix before intel, good for them they should let intel know, but I hadn't heard that and I've seen nothing to suggest the problem isn't with intels firmware code to date.

I may seem like some kind of all-knowing being at times, but I assure you thats not the case I'm still human. I haven't evolved into homolaptopicus yet :D

I've been impressed with the board the first 5 days. Wish I could contribute to the sleep issue but I'm just not a sleep kind of guy.

The UEFI was pretty fluid(Was it in the UEFI it says no dual boot issue, or maybe the manual, thought that was funny). Put a 2600K in under water. 4.8Ghz at ~1.4v. 20 loops of LinX, and has folded big adv work units the last 5 days, with a 460GTX folding at same time.

Honestly pretty simple to setup and use. Set power and current limit to 200, ratio to 48, level 2 LLC. Thought PLL was a little high at stock settings, 1.85v or thereabouts. Dialed it back to 1.79v. Disabled the C-states. Left the rest at default. Used fixed offset Vcore to find stablity voltage for 4.8Ghz. Switched to offset mode, think I needed .07 offset. Voltage responds just how I want for Speed Step changes from idle to 100% and back.

Vcore was a little jumpy but acceptable. No chance to play with DRAM config yet, just 1333 7 CAS for now, will venture there later.

How did you manage to get the 1.00 Bios version? The only ones available are 1.10, 1.30 and 1.34.

Came with the mobo, probably an early sample from Asrock itself.

@ Mac, can you post your full hardware specs? I'll try to match them best I can when I get the Z68 Extreme4 sample and test its ability to wake from sleep. Thanks for the Pro3-M pics :up:

Ket, think prob. no need to worry about S3 sleep on recent Asrock mobo/BIOS. I have tested a few of their P67/Z68 models and I can see that they do put in much effort making sure S3 sleep functions work (didn't check out the CPU Int. PLL issue though cos I don't use it).

But no problem, just PM me if you still need the specs or can't make S3 resume work when you get your Z68 E4 sample.

No worries then. I was just going to check the sleep function as some users are saying it doesn't work, but as you have checked it on some boards we'll leave it at that for now. Must be a slightly unstable OC with the users saying sleep doesn't work.

As I was just saying, Asrock pays attention to S3 functions.

Mate, that its great but it doesn't work for me on an Asrock Z68 Extreme 4 with the CPU overclocked to 4.2Ghz (no voltage change or anything just a change of multiplier).

Can I see your BIOS settings? :)

Have you tried increasing vcore a bit? Not waking from sleep properly when OCd sounds suspiciously like a unstable OC to me ;)

Do you have details what this Intel bug may be? Other then the PLL Overvoltage issue? I have had no sleep issues on Asus boards running stock or overclocked. Wondering if this may be something will just appear out of the blue one day.

It's not a issue that will just suddenly crop up one day I wouldn't think. The issue would seem to be fixed with Z68, and given the maturity of the UEFI on the P67 Extreme4 I'd be surprised if the bug still exists on that board. AFAIK every bug I have reported to Asrock the R&D team has fixed :up:

Well, it is now going to sleep properly ... don't know what I changed there but its now working fine. Strangely enough I went back to stock speeds and the system wouldn't wake up from sleep first time I tried so had to do a reset.

I assume the overclock is stable after 12 hour prime and 3 hour linpac though. I think I can probably do 4.3 Ghz at stock voltage as I managed to do 4.4 Ghz 7 hour prime stable before one of the cores crashed.

Overclocking.. fun isn't it? :p: On another note good news Z68 owners I just this minute answered the door and got the Z68 Extreme4 :up: I must say its rather impressive when you open that flap up and lay your eyes on it for the first time ;) Pictures and a review are also inbound I'm just waiting for my new temperature gun to arrive for a portion of the review I'll be doing.

Updated first post with some UEFIs.

When I changed BCLK from 100 to 100.1 I noticed the UEFI info screen will say 4848Mhz for CPU speed with 48 multi instead of 4805. Cosmetic bug of being off a decimal space? The CPU really runs at 4805 so no big issue, just wondering if its known or others have the seen it.

I'll check it when I have the Z68 Extreme4 up and running ;) Just waiting on a temp gun to arrive to get everything done in one go :up:

For anybody not being able to wake from sleep with a high overclock on the Z68 Extreme4 it's recommended you update the UEFI to version 1.4, it has been extensively tested and this problem can no longer be duplicated. It would seem intel or Asrock found a reliable fix and implemented it with UEFI 1.4 :)

How about the same solution on P67 Series?

Thanks for that Ket, I have been trying to overclock mine to 4.5Ghz stable with low volts but I am yet to upgrade to 1.4. Will do that in the next few days.

By the way the eSATA problem is still there :(

Um, Ket is telling the truth.
It's a BUG in Intel's firmware. D1 stepping chips don't even support internal pll overvoltage in the first place.

Gigabyte did NOT fix the issue. You seem to think they did--they did NOT. I have the board. I TESTED the bios. They simply did a BAND AID for it. You want to know what happens with latest bios?

1) GO into sleep
2) wake up from sleep. Fans spin up for 5 seconds.
3) board TURNS OFF.
4) Board does a COMPLETE REPOST to BIOS, cpu and RAM count, just as if the board were completely shut off.
5) You boot to the OS choices menu (if you have one).
6) Windows says "resuming from standby".
7) It loads faster than if you loaded it manually, but NOT by much. And the hard drive SWAPS forever ...it's actually faster just to power off the board and power back on, due to the swapping.

All Gigabyte did is make the board repost as if it was powered off (it actually does power off), to reinitialize the register which controls CPU PLL overvoltage.

It's not a fix at all.

If you want a real fix, contact Intel.

So you are stating that this board will wake fine from S3 sleep with PLL Overvoltage enabled?

UEFI 1.4 was extensively tested with a 2500K CPU. Every possible combination of options was tested and the problem can't no longer be duplicated with the new UEFI, so based on that, yes, the problem should be fully cured now :yepp:

I have this board with UEFI 1.40, and I have no sleep issues, with PLL overvolt enabled @4.8GHz.
The board sleeps and wakes with no problem.

Boot drive is an OCZ RevoDrive X2, I'll try it later with a Vertex 3.

Confirmed working with OCZ Vertex 3, and no issues with sleep or wake.

Fresh off the press! One of my Asrock contacts has today sent me a shiny new UEFI for the Z68 Extreme4; 1.4A. The change is a clever little bit of code that will automatically detect and set any XMP profile that has been pre-programmed into the memory modules SPD data. Anyone that tries this beta UEFI could you please post in this thread letting me know if your XMP profile automatically got loaded? Thanks :up:

I'll upload the UEFI once the file hoast resolves its technical issues, it'll be available to download from the first post ;)

Nice one Ket. Not a deal breaker for me though as it only takes 5 seconds to go to the BIOS and change it to pick the XMP profile. Got my USB pen today, I will be flashing to the latest 1.4A bios anyway so will let you know how it goes!

I'll wait for your results :up: I've pushed through as much as I can right now. With Computex coming up everybody is crazy busy so we'll have to wait a week or two for all the hubub to settle down again ;)

FYI , Asrock will be releasing two high-end motherboards .. Asrock currently are also targeting to the high-end motherboard segment and mid-range motherboard segment too... seems like asrock is chasing and catching up those high-end motherboard manufacturer.

Right Ket, so I have just updated to BIOS 1.4 (couldn't download the Beta from Megaupload for unknown reasons) but I still have the eSATA problem. I swith the caddy on, windows slows down to a crawl, mouse lags... etc... until I switch the caddy off.

The drive works fine inside the computer. In fact I have been taking data out of it for the past few days in case I had to sell the caddy.

Noted. The issue will be looked at but it might take a few weeks.

Ket you lucky @!$#^@& you !! LOL ... How would you say the z68 does against the x58s ? I mean should i really upgrade or still hold onto what i have .. The gigabyte x58 UD5

In terms of bandwidth, you get a lot more. I'm sitting at 24.1GB\s read, 23.2GB\s write and 25.7GB\s copy with my CPU @ 4.5GHz and memory @ 2133MHz. CPU performance once OCd a 2500K sits just behind a 980X or thereabouts, and a OCd 2600K sits right at the levels of a 980X. Considering a Ivy Bridge chip should be a simple drop-in to Z68 boards with a UEFI update, I would say a Z68 is worth the investment as things currently stand, and with the future in mind. With Asrock, you know any board I'm sent to test will exemplify the word "perfection". Very few bugs get by my radar ;)

Ordered a Pro3 to pair with a 2500K. I hope to get a decent OC with not that high of voltage.

I haven't got my hands on the midrange boards I'm working with Asrock on their higher end boards. From what I do know of that board though, it should do well :up: If you come across any UEFI bugs drop me a PM and I'll pass the info on to my contacts.

I got this MB yesterday and have been playing with it since late last night and I'm really impressed.
I upgraded to the latest official bios (1.4) using the windows utility, it came with 1.10.

I've just been doing some light OC and 4.5 without PLL Overvoltage is "stable" on the standard Intel cooler, stable as in IBT running for some time.

The only changes I've done is changing to Offset mode where I increased the default value a few notches and that's pretty much it.

Hardware used is the 2600K, 8GB Vengeance (2x4), IGP and the old Vertex 120GB, thats about it for now.

Just have to wait for a new cooler, completely forgot about it and the H70 I've got as a spare just isn't compatible with the Silverstone FT02.

And again, so far I'm really impressed!

Thats the aim ;) Asrock certainly worked hard to make sure no bugs early UEFI versions had on the P67 worked their way into the Z68 :up:

my Z68 Pro-3-M will be here tomorrow along with a 2500k, 16GB of gskill Ripjaws 1333 and a Swiftech Polaris 120.
and my GTX 460 should be here next week... so i will be using an 8800 GT until then.

i am concerned about the 16GB though.
can anyone confirm that there shouldnt be any issues with that much ram?
i dont need that much but for $149.00 i couldnt pass it up.

also i know its using the UEFI bios but what about the auto overclock? how is it working and what should i be watching out for?
overvolting of the CPU? ram? etc?
i am praying for a low voltage cpu that wont need a bunch of volts to OC but i have never been very lucky there.

this is my first Sandybridge and of course new Z68 board so i am pretty green with all the bios settings they have.
if anyone has some bios settings they want to share with me, and anyone else, that would be awesome.

it isnt any guarentee that it will work with my hardware but its a starting point where i wouldnt even know where to start otherwise.

I cant see why 16GB shouldn't work.

I've been using 16GB on other SB MB's for quite some time w/o any issues so it never really crossed my mind but I'll do a test on my MB later today.

I never do auto OC, it's pretty easy doing it the "normal" way.

Overclocking SB is a doddle. Start by setting CPU vcore to say 1.3v, hit up a 45x multiplier.. and thats it. You probably won't even need to raise VTT or anything until you start trying to OC the memory (which does give nice gains in my testing)

I have the same eSATA problem with my Asrock X58 Extreme 6 motherboard and Windows 7 x64. Whenever I try to use my external hard drive with the eSATA port on the motherboard, the computer slows down and the mouse lags. It doesn't stop until I turn off the external hard drive, and the hard drive never does show up in Windows.

The external hard drive works fine if I plug it into the eSATA port on the front panel of my computer case (which is hooked up to one of the sata3 ports on the motherboard). It also works fine when hooked up to a different computer.

I know that the eSATA port and the internal #6 sata3 port are shared on the Asrock motherboard, but I don't have anything plugged into the #6 internal sata3 port. I have also tried using the eSATA port with nothing plugged into any of the sata3 ports on the motherboard and had the same problem.

I don't know what else to do. I guess for now I'll just use an eSATA to SATA bracket instead of the eSATA port on the motherboard. But I wish I could figure out how to get it working properly. "

I have exactly his same problem, it might be an issue with the Marvell controller may be as I have noticed the 2 boards share the same controller.

I have forwarded some findings about the SE9120 controller regarding its performance and have made my contacts aware of the eSATA issue. For now all we can do is sit tight, with Computex underway I probably won't hear much until the beginning of next week at least.

thanks for the tip Ket.
i will eventually go into the manual overclocking as i always have done but just like the 775 core2 boards alot of them had voltage settings that were hard to understand and worse yet could kill your cpu if you werent careful so i just want to be able to see a screen shot or picture from a camera for what someone is using now so i can kind of understand where to start and also start learning why i have to use this voltage.

perfect example... when reading about the ASRock Z68 i didnt know that the sandybridge chips had the entire bus system linked, so that if you OC'd the old fasion way (front side bus increase) you increased the entire bus of the board, not just the FSB.
i knew it was all done with the cpu turbo multiplier but i didnt know that the cpu bus clocks couldnt be messed with without crashing your board.

little things like that are what i need to learn about.

how can i stop the cpu from throttling back because of temps..... it hits 60deg when running P95 and it throttles back.
i have all the temp throttling settings in the bios disabled.

either this board just killed my brand new swiftech 120mm fan that came with the Swiftech Polaris 120 or the fan was sh|t to begin with....

isnt this a great start to a new system

It is not throttling because of the temp but because of the Turbo Power and Core Current limits. Set them manually to 255/255/300.

and i am a complete retard, i am posting in the xtreme 4 thread when i have the z68-M board god how'd that happen i was in the Z68 thread i swear when i originally posted my questions...


so i ended up finding at least 1 stick of ram phsically bad.
throws memtest errors every time at the same location during memtest.

so now i have to rma the whole 16GB kit... lovely.

So far I'm priming my 2500K Batch 3049A305 @ 4.5GHz 1.31vcore in BIOS (CPU-z shows 1.296 under load). Will try higher in a little bit.

Yes. All UEFI Z68 mainboards should with just a bios... pardon uefi update.

anyways i am on the Pro3-M and at 4.6Ghz 1.3v Actual with my 2500k
i dont beleive that cpu's and computer hardware have a break in period but i am seeing something to which could be called a break in period with several days having passed and i have went from 44x to 45x and now 46x with no changing of the vcore or anything else.
looking forward to see how far it will go!

Are any 2500k users having issue reaching 5ghz? Just trying to gauge how well this board overclocks. Seen mixed reviews. Will be on water (EK Supreme HF Plexi/Nickel) in the same loop as a 6970 but with a XSPC RX480 and a MCR220 + Appropriate number of yates in pull.

Lestat, did you need to enable PLL overvoltage to be able to use the 46x multi? My computer refuses to POST if I don't enable PLL overvoltage with multis over 45x, sadly.

I have 2600K not a 2500K, been folding for almost a month straight now at 4.8Ghz at 1.43v on water, original UEFI, temps in 60's on a water loop of Iwaki MD-20, Dtek Fusion v1, and thermochill PA120.3 that hasn't been cleaned out in 4 years(can't even imagine what the block looks like on inside). Board easily benched at 5100Mhz and that's all I have done... But its been solid, without a single crash at 100% CPU, and a 460GTX at 100% for about 4 weeks, it's just an opinion but I think the board could do 5Ghz 24/7 without issue. I experimented with 5Ghz and I just needed too much voltage for folding stability, but I think I don't have a great clocker of a CPU either.

Now one could argue that the board is what is requiring the higher Vcore to achieve stabilty, in my experience over the years the better the Vreg circuit the lower Vcore you need for stabilty. Maybe this board doesn't have that, maybe it does, but I can say it's been stable.

My 2500k caps at 4.5GHz 1.3v from all the testing I've done, anything else BSOD. I got a strictly average clocking 2500k :(

Oh, here is a new EtronTech driver sent to me by one of my contacts, v1.1. I'm told it should fix some problems with some of the problem devices reported.

Hi guys had my board about a week so just wondered what motherboards temps your getting im getting 64c according to speccy not sure if thats high or not so would like to check with you guys.

When you say motherboard temps, what temps do you mean exactly? I have measurements taken with my temp gun for MOSFETs (side/top idle & load) and PCH.

oh and my batch is 3049B295

i returned my gskill 16GB 1333 kit because of 1 bad stick and ordered a new 16GB Ripjaw 1600 kit for the same price after coupon!
i am eager to see what she will do. i have read a few things saying that most of the 1600 kits will do 1800 easily. plus at 1N not 2n
my 1333 kit did 1600 9-9-9-24 @ 1N no prob.
funny they rate the kits at 2N if they will do 1N (which i assume is the same as 1T or 2T with DDR/DDR2)

either way i am very surprised and very happy so far with my Z68 Pro3-M
very nice board... too bad it doesnt have more SATA connectors... but its matx so 5 is enough lol.

Just installed my board with an i5-2500k, running nice at 4.5Ghz, 1.2V. Only issue so far is my Steelseries Xai mouse causing long boot delays and not working correctly in the bios.

It will be highly unlikely for you to be running it at that voltage/clock. I don't think anyone could have a stable speed like that. Make sure you're running the latest version of CPU-Z because you can get miss readings with it.

Has anyone tried the Virtu function out yet? Does it need supporting software like Cyberlink to work or can you use it to convert a video without extra software? Also, I saw mention of an Exteme7, any idea of a release for it?

Pretty sure you need extra software. It's just allowing use of quick sync, while having discrete video card. Mediacoder has added support so there are free solution besides arcsoft and cyberlink. I do plan on trying it soon. Been folding for last month and haven't had a chance to do much with this board, but time is now.

Now my CPU is running 5GHz @ 1,336V but it easly crunch LinX at only 1.304V

Nice chip you got.

I see you run Win 7 sp1 but you probably run an old Linpack without the AVX and therefore your GFlops are a bit low, here can you get the latest LinX with updated Linpack.

It should put some more pressure on your chip, you should push ~130+ GFlops @ 5GHz with 3Gb of ram load.

It would be nice to see if you still can push 5GHz with the new Linpack library.

Yeah those ss are from January before the relase of SP1. With AVX Linx is stable but RealTemp shows sky high temp of even 98C so I don't really want to burn my CPU. For me Prime95 in blend mode is telling you more about stabbility where Linx was stable at 1,304V Prime95 needed 1,336V. Another thing is when you are using offset and most of the games doesn't use all 4 cores at 100% then vCore is a little bit lowered.

I see, yeah, LinX can run quite hot sometimes and there´s no reason to push ones chip for a few screenshots and you´re right, there´s otherways to check for stability.

I´m also using offset and I noticed that the vcore are different if I load one, two, three or all four cores (lower with less cores) but it seems to work very well nevertheless.

have been following this thread as i prepare to build my next OC'd system based off a i7-2600K, thank you all for the insights.

since this is the official thread for owners of the ASRock Z68 Extreme4, i was wondering if anyone would like to share what criteria led you to purchase this board vs. the other options available? for anyone purchasing a Z68 Extreme4 i think it will be an obvious alternative to consider the ubiquitous Asus P8Z68-V Pro. these two boards are close in features, but not identical, and i'm wondering if it is the slight differentiation that has led people to the ASRock board, or whether people are being led to the ASRock brand for other reasons?

for me the differentiating feature is the DisplayPort output that ASRock provides. i am building this machine primarily for large-scale RAW photo processing, so i need it to drive my 2560x1600 30" monitor, and evidently the Asus P8Z68-V Pro DVI-D output does not support higher-resolution dual-link connections. i have no need to play games on this system, so i would actually prefer to use SB video instead of a discrete card as this will eliminate a substantial amount of heat and noise from my system. this may also have the added benefit of allowing me to clock up my CPU further while keeping overall temps at reasonable levels.

i was initially a bit hesitant to go with ASRock due to its origins of being a lower cost OEM solution spun off by Asus, but with their P67/Z68 Extreme4 series boards they seem to be stepping up to an almost comparable level, at least as far as product positioning goes. and judging from the posts in this forum, there seems to be a lot of confidence in the stability and OC potential of this ASRock board...

-The last (third long) pci-e slot. On Asus if one wants to set it to 4x mode he has to switch off e-sata, some usb ports and pci-e x1 AFAIR. No such restrictions in Asrock's case.
-Asus had a little advantage in P67 concerning usb3 compatibility (Nec chip). But it is no longer valid as they changed usb3 controller in Z68.
-USB3 front panel as a bundle in Asrock.
-surprisingly robust community of Asrock users and faster response with bios updates from their support team.
