I just received two quad socket servers with Opteron 6172 in them. Boinc only see 32 cores, and the other 16 is idle while running. What to do?

Thanks! I just changed it to 48. Then restarted the manager, but it ain't working yet. Can I force the manager to download the new configuration?
I think you should just update WCG from the projects tab.
pics or it didnt happen...
Also make sure you are using the web-based settings , not the local boinc settings.

It won't work with more than 32 cores until you mail the computer to me for troubleshooting. I anticipate troubleshooting will take only 2-4 years. My home address is.....

I think you should reinstall BOINC.
My points decreased when I went from a 965 at 4x3.5GHz to a 1055T at 6x3.5GHz As per my last post in the thread, reinstalling worked.
I haven't changed anything in the system since install. Don't think that it will change anything. But I will try if nothing else will do the trick!Quote:

Thanks, I did the manual update, and now it shows the correct profile. Its still 32cores though. But I just read that local settings overrule webprofiles. I cleared the local settings multiple times, but I'm not sure that all is gone? Can I clean the local setting by hand?Quote:

My kernel is custom compiled for 8 cores (Ubuntu 10.04, Kernel 2.6.36.3) but the maximum if 512 (normally that is. It can be patched to use WAY more) I can't remember what the default was.

To clear the local settings open the manager and click through Advanced > Preferences and in the top right hand corner click "clear".

Is this a work or personal workstation? If work, what is this monster used for? Please post ppd once you figured out how to get it to crunch all cores. Probably best to post this dilemma on WCG boinc help section.

What OS is this machine running?
To force all cores in a windows environment go start>> run>> msconfig and go to the boot.ini tab then advanced options and tick the NUMPROC line and select the maximum threads / cores available and then reboot :up:

A quick google run suggests that BOINC won't use additional cores until it's restarted, so make sure you reboot to be sure.

Hi guys. Its not like this is crazy compared to what effort some of you guys put into this project. This is 2 servers I bought for a project at work. I do hope they can work 16hours a day or so when they get into production. But we will see! Thanks for the help you all provided, its what make this site great! :up:
Hi guys. This is the numbers I'm getting. I'm still hoping to see 48 days of cpu time/day at some point.
You won't see that. On my 8 thread CPUs I typically get 7-7.5 days per computer (even from dedicated crunchers). My guess is that the remaining time "lost" is system overhead. On my linux cruncher I regularly got 7.9-8.3 days (dedicated cruncher).
They will easily break 100,000ppd WHEN they get "rolling" if running 24/7Quote:

imagine that we had some crunchers like that configured as a beowulf cluster , but with cheap 8 core ( $275 ea) and less ram ( to be cheaper).
similar board costs around $700 +$275 x 4 +$15 x 16 sticks ( 16 gb of ram) : around $2040 ( IDK about sh and taxes). which psu would be good?
any idea about how many watts does it eat?
These servers come with 1100watt PSUs. My guess is that this server is able to draw 800-900w fully loaded. Without all that mem sticks and extra hdd's and io cards, I think the power draw would be around 500w, maybe even 400-450 with 8core cpu'sQuote:

These two servers is going to host 250-300 virtual desktops. But thats only in the working hours.. I'm working on a solution so they can crunch the remaining hours.
The controller provided with this, is a IBM M1015. Its a rebranded LSI 9240 i think. The performance is ok.
virtual desktops or virtual machines?
unless is something specially coded or you know what you are doing 300 "standard" virtual desktops will make your server crawl
We got a total of 96 physical cores for 300 virtual machines. That is 3vm's per core, which is enough for the desktops in question. I do know what I'm doing:)Quote:
