3DMark2001SE: Low-end GPU challenge? R5450/GT210?

Heyya fellas,

since the prices of these cards are now extremely low, what would you say if we throw a challenge, no limits? Let's say with R5450s and GT210, both DDR2 and DDR3?

I still remember the 8400GS challenge that zakelwe ran a thousand years or so ago - it was one of the best competitions I ever took part in. I just hope those cards are not memory-limited, it would be a shame if the contest turned into a memory binning race.

what will be the cpu? 5.75gh limit on c2d? 6ghz on i7?

Would prefer to see a lower limit on CPU so LN2 was not required on it.
Say 4.5GHz i7, and the equivalent in C2D and SB?

people who have gpu pots..will have cpu pots... we haz to make it ..for everybody or make it difficult....

or we set gpu class records...so sb only comp (unfair if you have a brutally fast 2600k)

If we go for a CPU cap I'd say 5GHz CPU cap would be acceptable. Anyone can find a C2D platform that'll do 5GHz and EVERY SB will do 5GHz 3D. Either card works for me also.

So why set CPU caps then if everyone will have LN2 on their CPU?

they're suggestions...

CPU cap at 5 GHz sounds good. Gom - you remember that last low clock '01 challenge was won by a Bloomfield machine? Don't be so quick to limit it to 775 and SNB :)

And we need someone to run the compo, count the points and generally be the judge - this has to be one dedicated person, absolute power works best :)

If needed, you can use the HCE for ranking/submitting scores. With password if you only want people to join who register here.

That's why my thought were on 5450 DDR2/DDR3 and 210GT DDR2/DDR3. Those cards cost around 30-50€ here. We probably spend more money monthly on LN2 than on these cards. They scale fantastically with higher voltage and lower temperatures therefor they are the perfect candidates!

I wouldn't go with any limitations at all. After all, we're on xtremesystems. I believe these GPUs will stop scaling past ~5.2-5.3GHz Wolfdale or ~ 4.4-4.5GHz Sandy Bridge. No point in CPU limitations as far as I see. We can also throw in a Unigine Heaven HWBOT edition for good measure.

@ massman: Yeah, that would be cool if we could use the HCE as a point mechanism. Others, what do you think?

With the GT210 I had coldslow issues around ~ -20°C. Scaling with temps was nuts, though, so with coldslow fix it should be fun.

GT240 is quite more expensive than GT210 and R5450, which normally go for around 30-40 €/USD. So, anyone up for a challenge? Lets say two months time?

I got the GT210, the ATI 5450 (both PCIex) and one 4350 PCI slot.... Would like to join, will use an 1055T, but the OC on the processor is not that good. So are we going to comparing highest OC's on the GPU cores too? :p:

Yes because wasting LN2 on a CPU is much better than doubling your bench times with LN2 on only the GPU :shakes:

Why don't create something like country cup? 3 scores from different member and compete like team?

In Portugal there are very few people to bench and will not have team :(

HWBOT was down for a moment. Should work fine now.

Little off topic but since you guys are benching 2001 again,I just installed it on a fresh windows 7 install and with the stock windows drivers my scores were fine with my gtx 560 ti but as soon as I updated my drivers the car chase High and the lobby high scores are running at like 100 fps?

I know its a driver problem and if there is a workaround,I doubt nvidia is going to fix there new drivers for a 10 year old program.

GT240s are $60 but with a $30 MIR, so essentially a $30 card IMO, don't see the point in anything weaker.:shrug:

Well, I have the same problem and I'm also the moderator :shrug:

I'm also having severe issues with Hwbot Unigine Heaven, it hangs at benchmark loading screen. If I run classic Heaven then it runs okay.

Anyway, here's a quick test on ambient 20°C water cooling with Giga's R5450 512MB DDR3:

Ci7 2600K (capped at 5288MHz)
Intel DP67BG
2x2GB Exceleram E30104A (PSC)
Gigabyte HD 5450 OC 512MB

How's the scaling, is it memory bottlenecked?

I've had nothing but problems with Unigine HWBot benchmark, too. On a G210 it hangs every time after 98,5 seconds :( Vanilla Unigine benchmark runs fine.

Thanks xoqolatl! Yeah, these are just priliminary numbers. This card scale nicely with memory, but not as much as the old 8400GSs we have been benching a few years ago.

Change it back before it's too late, IMHO. It hasn't really started yet...

well, we have 2 stages, ddr2 and ddr3, points of both stages are sumed up, so you need to take part in both stages to win. because both stages have different hardware requireent you need 2 cards. ;)
if you gurantee to stick with the ddr2/ddr3 split i'll get me a 210 ddr2 and a 5450 ddr3 just to test both GPUs :p

Sounds to me like this is doomed to fail. Gotta choose 1 card with 1 memory type and 1 bus bandwidth guys, otherwise you have to buy multiples of everything.

Also, if Alex-Ro wants to use this card, it is his right to do so. But it won't be so much fun with these cards dominating so much just because of doubled bandwidth. I hope he'll grab a more regular and widely available card, it's up to him. :up:
