140mm Fan Testing on a HWlabs SR1 Radiator Round 7

Same as my round 6 testing and methods with the exception of using a Hardware Labs 140mm SR1 radiator. Seems as though we're getting more and more 140mm radiator options, so it would be nice to get a feel on how a fan performs on one from a noise perspective. This thread is devoted toward more real world like testing of fans physically mounted to the HWlabs SR1 radiator.

The 120mm fans are tested on a BGears slim profile 120>140 adapter. Soo...the 120's will be getting a small shroud benefit from being further from the radiator fins. In order to see how much if any this diffence means, I'm going to retest my top 140 fans with a shroud and include them in the below chart.

CONCLUSION SO FAR
140mm fans only: It's pretty tight with most of the results within the 3dbA or lower "Barely Perceptible" limit. There are however some fairly notable sound quality issues, particularly with the 7 blade fans at higher speeds including the yates. For low speed, I would tend to favor the Thermalright X-Silent, for high speeds, the Aerocool Shark.

120mm fans on an adapter: This is a bit apples to oranges with the adapter, but it's fairly surprising just how close 120mm fans perform to 140mm fans on a CFM per dbA ratio perspective. The 140mm fans do have some CFM per RPM advantage and seem to produce a slightly lower frequency tone, but their noise levels were pretty much the same. This makes some of the stronger performing 120mm fans a very viable option on 140mm radiators. I had really hoped the 140mm fans would be a huge benefit over 120s, but I'm just not finding that. There is a good sized advantage to the larger 140mm radiator and reduced restriction, but the gain is in the radiator frontal area, not the 140mm fan itself.

I have a few more 140's coming but that's what I think so far...

Not much to say since this is the first of the fans, but it did good down at low RPMs and had a blade type resonance issue above about 9V or 1100 or so RPM. As expected producing a fair amount of more air flow per noise level than the 120 sized rad test, but I threw it in here for something to compare. Power consumption is about the same, perhaps a touch better. Good at low RPM, but pretty harsh at 12V. Listen to the video for your own take on that.

awesome cant wait for full results, always good to know which 140mm fans are good on these 140mm rads, seems as if we are kept in the dark when it comes to 140mm rad/fans, great test martin!

Hmm, interesting rating system for noise quality.

I like these preliminary results, we could expect about 15-16% increase in performance from the surface area and it looks like overall you're getting above 14-16% increase in performance. Nice.

And sorry for the apples to oranges on the yate SM 120 vs 140, but since I didn't have anything to compare, I figured I'd start with that. All the latter results will compare to the yate SM like I did with the 120mm round.

Has about equal noise performance to the SM at like CFM levels, it's just a much slower speed is all. I was however a bit surprised that it wouldn't start up until nearly 8V. This one doesn't spin up fast enough to run into that blade resonance issue, so the noise quality is equally good pretty much everywhere. RPM range is fairly limited, but it might just be the ticket for someone looking for very low noise levels at 12V.

This one also seems to have a slightly different blade and generally seems to have a slightly lower noise level, but the noise quality is equally rather poor at higher volts.

I am not sure if it is related to this test, but it would be nice to test these 140s with some double or triple SR-1 rads to see if the 15 mm vs. 20 mm pitch has any affect on cooling efficiency. Thanks!

Probably to small to measure. Frontal area is important, but even if it was 1:1 with frontal area, that would only amount to 10mm/420mm or 2%. You're better off going over width, which the SR1 does.:up:

This testing has proven the GT's are the fan to beat. Wishing for a faster model for my PA160's.

Also looking at M speed Deltas now, They also have some 140's, but like Sanyo Denki, they are hard to get. Cheaper than San Ace 140's but still expensive.

Seems to me Nidec could corner the market with just 1 model of a GT 140.:shakes:

I don't remember whom but someone on these forums sent an email and was told that 140mm gt's would only happen if they could sell 100 000 units/year and more. At that point, it would be easier to get Dell to swap to 140mm on their normal case fans lol

So only option is for someone like Scythe to step up and place big bulk order. And as scythe answered to mail that they have no plans in nearest future for 140mm GTs, i doubt a bit that aswell. After all, market share/niche for 140mm is way smaller then for 120mm fans ..

I did a quick inquiry about Delta 140mm and only found 24 and 48 volt versions the datasheet says the working voltage is from 14v :( but above all they have been built for more performance and certainly not quiet @ 61.7db

Thermalright X-Silent 140

Overall a slower speed fan, but it's taking the lead. The motor is silent and the air/blades noise is smooth as can be. However, just like the 120mm 2000RPM thermalright...this one also has a bit of a rubbing noise. Earlier, I could tap the fan hub and it would come and go, so I suspect it's one of those minor little casting flaws that are rubbing and will eventually go away. Otherwise the sound quality would be perfect. The larger number of blades on this one also seems to give it a fair advantage in the CFM per RPM ratio. Noise level is a bit lower than everything tested so far, but the RPM range is a bit limited.

Aerocool Shark 140

This fan seems to be leading the pack at the higher RPM area and only about average at low speeds. Fortunately there isn't any blade resonance that the yates had problems with at high speeds, although there was one small resonance bump at 11V. Overall the best fan so far at high speeds from both a noise quality and noise level perspective of the fans tested so far. It does consume a fair amount of power though (4 watts). Regarding CFM/RPM it is very good, gaining almost a 200RPM lead over the 7 bladed yate at high speeds.

So far, it seems like a higher number of blades is a good thing. The thermalright leads the slow speeds and this one for high speeds. I did notice a small amount of rubbing noise at very low volts, but that seemed to go away at medium to high.

Noise Blocker Black Silent Pro PK-3

The noise blocker has near perfect sound quality at 4-5V. No rubbing, no motor ticks, just smooth sound. Unfortunately...like the yate loons, this fan starts having what I would describe as blade resonance with the radiator at higher speeds. You can barely notice it at around 7V and it gets progressively stronger on upwards. Noise level is about average down low and perhaps a bit higher than average at higher speeds. It does have very good RPM range and electrical efficiency is a fair amount better than the yate SM.

NZXT 140

I picked this one when SeeingRed was looking to sponsor most of the 140s, I figured with the high blade count, it would do really well. Unfortunately, I think the motor on this one is a bit whiny. It's not really strong, but there is a little motor noise throughout. Noise level turned out higher than average at the low RPM area, to about average at the high end. Range was good, electrical efficient not bad (about 2.5 watts), and CFM per RPM was a fair amount better the the yate SM.

Still absorbing this, but the GT on the adapter did very well. This is of coarse a bit apples to oranges with the adapter and possibly some shroud benefits/vibration isolation, so take it with that in mind. I will look into testing a couple of the top 140's with a shroud to check this later...

Don't know why you guys are surprised?. . .the SR1 is lower restriction than the MCR by a little bit, so it only stands to reason it plays into the AP-15's hands even more. ;)

Martin, you should be able to do a quick 120 to 140 dBA to CFM GT only chart to get a quick idea if there was any affect from the BGears shroud...in theory anyways. Off the top of my head, looks like it didn't get a whole lot of help from the shroud ...if any. :shrug:

Someone can send to martin koolance's 140-120mm adapter to see if there is any difference because of shroud effect in cfm (or martin can cut out himself such from whatever flat material). I'm guessing though that in real world such 'flat' adapters would hurt actual real cooling because to addition of GT's big motor hub blind spot one would get additional blind spots near sides/corners because of adapter.

OK, I'll try out some shroud type options. I could either flip the radiator over (after removing the barbs) or try building a shroud from a gutted fan. Leaning toward the latter since I've got a Rosewill 140 in my son's case that's been annoying me..:D

I do have the last two 120+adapter videos to process yet, I'll add those in as I get time and plan on some more shroud type work after my get some more 120's done. I promised RatDog, I'd do the PWM testing next weekend, so I plan to do that first.

An MCR isn't a very low restriction rad (on airflow) but the SR1 is...and 140mm is less restrictive than 120mm (what's easier to blow through, 1 straw or multiple straws? same principle here). So, yeah, of course Waterlogged was right (groan :lol: )

Interestingly, many, if not most, dust filters are more restrictive than an MCR. So in the grand scheme of things you can put on a fan, an RX/PA/TA/SR1 rad isn't reducing airflow (vs. open air) all that much :p:

EDIT: What did Shazza mean about WL being right? That GT+adapter is ahead of the pack, or that SR1 140mm was less restrictive than MCR120? He's said both :)

GT results made me feel extra down because of investing in big pile of 140mm NB PK3s :(

I had to see how high speed would do. Even if I can't put up with fans this high in speed, it's still impressive to watch now and then. This fan was sponsored by OldChap..:clap:

Seems to follow a similar trend as the 120mm fans. Starts out a bit high in speed, but it really has impressive CFM/noise ratio in the high speed area. Still very loud no doubt, but it's producing almost twice the CFM at similar noise levels as some of the 140s without an adapter.

Again, this is a bit apples to oranges with the adapter and potential shroud benefits, so take that into consideration as well.

Yate Loon D12SL-12 PTS on BGears 120>140mm adapter

Pretty much about the same as the 140mm fans in noise level per CFM. While the 140's do have a general CFM per RPM advantage, they also produce more noise per RPM. Really not much if any difference other than a slightly different tone. Actually I much prefer the 120mm yate myself, it's smooth at all volts, where the 140mm is nice down at lower RPMs, but has issues up high with the blade resonance thing.

If the shroud effect is zero, it seems on a radiator there is little to no difference in noise level per CFM between 140mm and 120mm fans. This is probably why there is some hesitation for fan makers to go to 140 sizing...also probably why we see fewer high speed 140s. Anyhow, this 120 does great on the 140mm radiator, particularly with noise quality where it's smooth all around.

I actually think that if you redo the test of the 140mm fan putting them on the side of the SR-1 that includes the little shroud the results for the 140mm will be better and will make less noise but maybe I'm wrong.

so either the 140mm fans are underwhelmingly poor performers or the gt15 is just above and beyond.

If only they undervolted without the whine :(

shroud benefit was pretty huge on higher fpi rads. I think the effect topped out around 2" depth, WeaponR I think did fairly extensive testing on heatercores.

iirc this was before even the PA series rads from Thermochill which were some of the lowest fpi by a large margin and even those benefitted.

There was shroud depth and fan orientation done by Martin himself. Optimal shroud depth IIRC was 30mm.

What surprises me is that the shroud had no effect on the 120mm Yate Loon like it seemed to have on the Delta and the GT. I think that even with the Koolance adapter, the GT would outperform most 140mm fans.

Guess I'm buying GT's. On the undervolting whine, you just have to get the right speed fan for your application.

The tight grouping of all competitors, and then the GT's is amazing.

Scythe better be getting more in the supply chain. :confused: I'd also like to see a higher speed model offered than the 15, as Nidec already makes it.

I don't think any of them had a shroud benefit. If you look at the dbA separation between the GT15@11V vs YateSM@12V on the MCR120 it's about 8-9dbA.

On the 140mm round, that difference is about 10dbA

I think the yate in 120mm is a very good fan, where the 140mm straight blade model is not quite as good. Either way, the GT is much stronger with noise level per CFM.

My guess is shrouds really don't change noise level/CFM much, if anything maybe sound quality, but I doubt it does much of anything for noise level.

Do you have any way to give them the full 24v? I'd send a Meanwell along, but don't have one yet.

At this point I have no idea if it will show GT results at the rpm most people are running. Only testing proves:up:

5 of these on a GTX 560 would be serious cooling power. Since they work so good @ 12v I'm putting them on a PA140.3. Still working on the case to put it in:rolleyes:

Do you have any way to give them the full 24v? I'd send a Meanwell along, but don't have one yet.

Great! Yes, I have a mastech variable PSU, I'll have to pull the fan controller out for a second test above 12v, but I can do that. Up to 30v if you want..:)

Have been running d14sl's on my sr1-420 for 5 months now and have been very pleased with them. I was looking for a near silent pc and run them at 600rpm and get great temps. Price to performance on them is very high at just £4 per fan here in the uk. Great work as ever Martin.

Sanyo Denki rates these 20.4~27.6vdc, says they have motor protection system. Should be good to 28v. Beyond that:shrug: Anyone think they can go to 30v?

If we are speaking about some adapters/shrouds imho more interesting would be to test TY-140 fans which shown best cfm/db results in Jordan's test. Unfortunately with 120mm fan mounting holes :/

I have some Thermalright X-Silent fans mounted on my HWL SR-1 with shrouds made of el-cheapo 140mm fans that i mutilated. The TR fans are just excellent. They are mounted vertically so i guess that's why i didnt get the rubbing sound (sleeve bearings, i guess they dont like being mounted horizontally). They have been functioning almost nonstop for about a year now, and they didnt degrade in sound. They compare very well with my GT's...

Your quite right, tired when I transcribed the pdf, got the wrong line. Edited it to 8.88 watts. Kinda an easy error to make if you look at the pdf on a lappy:)
At 2600rpm I have no doubt it moves 159cfm free air, considering how much air other SanAce 120's move at the same rpm.:fact:

Obviously these were not engineered to run @ 12v let alone 5.
And although they work well at 12v, imo they loose there efficiency quickly below that, probably sooner as we shall see.

The fact they even run that low was a trip to me;) I bought one[$25], tried it out @ 12v and down on a Scythe fan controller.
Then I tried to buy 10 more, they only had two:/

I fully expect this fan to get spanked by the GT's low db, at the air velocity's most of us run. A bunch of moving air is gona make some noise;)

Doubt I'll ever run them much more than half speed on a rad.[10 to 16v] They are quiet in my subjective testing, even compared to many other fans I've personally listened to.

All my rads are using the stock Thermochill shrouds, imo they do increase airflow/lower db with my "large hub" San Ace fans.

My Pa160's have huge shrouds,and work very well w/a 120 fan. I was going to mod them to fit 140's, but already very difficult to mount several in a case.

I like the amount of air being moved, not silent, never expected it.

Should be interesting to see how a industrial 140x38 stacks up.
If it's not great, or at least good, none of the other industrial 140s can be considered, especially with the huge price they all have.

OK, I got the last of the 140's done, but again having trouble with my check in.

I played around with coming up with a correction factor I can use below.

It appears to be purely a CFM error with my anemometer is for whatever reason is reading higher. Perhaps I blew some dust off the hotwire, or I had a kink in the cord? I'm not sure other than this is fairly consistently giving me higher CFM readings similar to my round 6 120mm fans vs round 7.

Question:
Start a new round with separate results, or correct the round 9 results and combine with round 7?

I'd vote for combining, simply because imho 35% of usability of test results comes from results in one review/test, instead of hunting through several ones and manually comparing numbers to make choice. That's why i'll always be for as-many-as-possible-fans-in-one-review.

Alright, I'll start processing the corrected version so we have something to compare. It's not a bunch of fans, just keep in mind the video comparison will be off by up to 2CFM (30FPM).

San Ace 140L

It did really well on the noise level side of things, pretty well across the board, but it really doesn't take off until 10V where there is a clear jog in the profile. Regarding noise quality, it is similar to most 38mm fans and a bit ticky at lower volts and eventually smoothing out as it nears it's intended high end voltage limit. This is fairly subjective as usual and highly depends on the actual installation location and amount of masking ambient noise.

Still getting loud as any fan this strong does, but the noise curve is fairly flat and the noise quality smooths out considerably. This is what it was designed for and does the job exceptionally well. Nearly doubles most 140mm fans in actual CFM output.:up:

An excellent fan, particularly at 11-12V where it even edged the mighty San Ace by a hair in noise level. Noise quality was mostly good with the exception of a weird intermittent vibration at 10V. This one didn't quite have as much power as the Aerocool Shark, but it's a bit quieter(-3dbA at the top end) and I think smoother in sound than the shark at the same CFM level.

An excellent fan in noise level and quality, particularly at 11-12V:up:

I already have the BGears adapters, what I was looking for was the foam strips in picture below to lessen vibration. The foam is used between the adapter and the radiator and the adapter and the fan.

That looks very similiar to the foam weatherstripping you can get at any hardware store (lowe's or home depot). It's got adhesive on one side.

Alright for the other's out there planning on using BGears 140mm-120mm fan adapters to fit on 140mm radiators I've experimented with the sponge tape, after some experimentation I've found the best method for getting a very even effective and just clean looking gasket sure to make a difference! In the pictures below I first took four strips of "1/8" Super Firm Sponge Tape" (title on bag) and created a foundation so that the upper layer of sponge tape lays flat instead of folding down, alright already let's get to the pictures! :up:
