GPUGrid Supercomputer week!

Hey guys, so as most of you are familiar with, on the WCG section we have a supercomputer week every couple months to:

1) Raise awareness that we actually have these teams, and
2) Show just how Xtreme we really are

So with that, I'm proposing we do a GPUGrid Supercomputer week to start off the new year - Jan 1st - 8th.

If noone has any objections, we'll go with that, and then for our friends in the southern hemisphere we'll do another one in late June(?).

So what do you guys think? My bet is we break 5.5 Million PPD. :up:

Um... not currently. I contacted GDF over at GPUGrid to see if we can get a temporary beta test that week. Don't really expect that to come through but a smart man once told me: They can't give you what you don't ask for.

I reset my cards this morning and everything seems to be going pretty well so far.

We should review the "EZ" guide and make sure we are clear on what version of drivers work best for which version OS and cards and also make sure we start with the bare minimum for entry. Some folks won't go for SWAN_SYNC, some will stay on Win7 ... we need to make sure we are clear and always respectful because the reality is GPUGrid crunching is more complicated than WCG due to the additional variables. Do we have a resident linux GPUGridder that will sign on for support during this week?

While I understand that by the very nature of this forum (XS) people should be able to handle the deets, and at the risk of sounding all corporate and junk, like Otis said, we are trying to attract new people to GPUGrid and if we are not super clear and helpful, or are to aggresive it could backfire and drive people away.

I totally agree. I'll go through and make sure the guides are up to date as soon as finals are over and I'm moved back home (December 14th ish). If you guys see anything please point it out so that we make sure it is corrected.
I'll run through and do a fresh install on a machine just so that I know it still works.

And where did that list of ways to maximize output go? Did that ever get finished?

So I just heard back from GDF - unfortunately on the ATI thing their hands are tied until ATI gets a more reliable SDK which, at the earliest, wouldn't come in time for this round of super computer madness.

Hey guys, what's the best GPU to get around 100 dollars?

maybe gtx460 on sale if you can find it

You could easily get a 450 for that, or another 260, but I think a 460 would be pushing it. Maybe if you got a good blackfriday deal or went on Ebay?

The other thing to look at would be a 470 of someone who decided it was better to get SLI 460s... Again, hit up ebay. Good luck - I'll let you know if I run across something. :up:

Why I was asking? I am building a new computer for a friend in school, and I am planning to give him my 65nm GTX260 since all he is looking for is a good gaming system.

Will a GTX460/450 get into WCG's way?

A 450/60 will only make a difference on WCG output if you use Swansync. I mean all GPUGrid WUs make some impact no matter what card you run them on, but we make that small sacrifice because we get much more work done in total this way. It shouldn't be noticeably different though. :up:

hey guys, i'll be putting my rig back for this week as well. main reason i'm off temporarily is because school (have no time to maintain and check up on rigs), and also i cant afford to keep them running anymore. all my rigs combined draw around 1500w and i leave them on 24/7. i always hit tier 3 electricity rates at 16cents per kwh i think, and my bills are always in the couple hundreds. i have no income right now, so i need to pluck them off for now :(. but i'll gladly be back for this week :up:

Quite honestly you're over my head... :shrug:

I would guess it just reserves a core for use by the GPUGrid WU and that WU keeps the core entirely busy since the cpu can do anything the GPU can and more... but that's just a guess.

off topic question i seen a few charts saying the 8800gtx's won't work but I also read that "all cuda cards work" so this means that they do or don't?

Also what would you guys say is the average time for a GTX 460 to finish a WU? I just started up last night on the grid and the WU's look huge and it's only using like 70% of the GPU. is all this normal?

The 8800GTXs will not work for GPUGRID. They are better off doing F@H:)

The 70% GPU usage is normal for GPUGRID, I have never seen the project use more than 75% of the GPU core.

Here's a question - is it still not possible to run, say MW@H and GPUGRID on the same machine?

If there is an option in MW@H that says "use only ATi cards" or something like that, then it is possible.

Yes I believe that there is an option for that. You can choose to use either ATI, Nvidia, CPU or any combination of those.

I know overclocking your Shaders makes a noticeable difference, but I don't think your CPU would... or not noticeably. Although I don't think anyone's looked into this...?

I have, and yes it does. While i7s are powerful beasties and bumping your clocks to 3.5/ 3.8 should be a cake walk ... you will see a difference. IIRC not so much after you pass 3.8 GHz. Think about it this way, if the GPU has to wait for the CPU everytime it needs something your runtimes get longer. It is more pronounced with SWAN_SYNC because you are telling the CPU to continually poll the GPU to see if it needs anything and in this case the GPU first has to wait for the CPU to ask and then it has to wait for the CPU to say it's done.

I would like one or two to. I would put them to good use for sure. I am already runing to max and realy dont know how to give something extra for supercomp. week. 470s are runing at 810mhz or 1620 ahader and that is very close to stable crunching max. I can try to OCed them little bit more.

We need to put our efforts to promoting the SC week.

I have only one rig and that is it. It is at the max every day and realty here is that I need to work for a month and not eat to buy one 580.

I think most of us are already running at full capacity, the way we are going to increase our output is to talk to friends and family and see if they have anything we can involve and help people on this form get it up and running.

We have a bunch of computing power in these forums, we just need to help get people involved!

(and sorry I haven't been around to do much here, even though I have plenty of time, turns out my grandparents don't have internet. :down:)

Went with a GTS450 and it should be here by the end of the week.
The 9800GT was doing well with me canceling the KASHIF-HIVPR projects but after 6 days of avoiding them its the only project the server will upload to me now.:(

Which stats site will be used for the "official? results of SC Week? The reason I ask is that in the PIE - Perfection In Execution thread, the numbers appear to be pulled from both free-dc and boincstats. Then in the Xtremesystems GPUGRID team and member rank thread, the numbers are drawn from allprojectstats. Kryja has been posting our daily numbers (thanks Kryja!), which I believe are coming from Free-DC.

While I'm not necessarily advocating any change to the status quo, it would be nice to have "one source of the truth" (BI parlance) for the coming week.

Yes I do pull the numbers each morning from Free-DC for dailies and used to do both for the pie, though I've been lazy since Christmas and am just using Free-DC. No skin off my nose to change my source.

I had planned to put a slim bracket on one of mine so I could use the bottom pcie slot on my rampage II but there is a bracket at the bottom the motherboard tray in my TJ07 which obscures the hsf :( Water cooling ought to do it ;P But yes for the time being no Milky way for me. Not that we're getting work anyway... :rolleyes:

You don't need to use swan_sync but it does improve ppd/ wu completion times - I just wanted to maximise my output. Also to see if I could get a nibble of pie.

Ya little 450 here, dont think anyone's running one here and couldnt find any data on ppd for them anywhere.
Was going to go dual low profile 430's but couldnt confirm how well they did and saw a few post on gpugrid's forum saying to avoid them but with out any reason.:shrug:

Have you run driver sweeper? ATI lingerings mess up Nvidia pretty bad and the other way around as well.
Ive been trying to run my ATI igpu with a 450 the last hour and its a no go as BOINC client wont connect:shrug:

So after bailing on the dual gpu idea I got everything straight after removing any trace of ATI with driver sweeper and the client now connects though I have to use the 450 only for everything.

If you have drivers 258.xx or higher then the problem is probably that Boinc was installed as a protected application which disables gpgpu. Just uninstall and reinstall Boinc and you should be good to go.

Also, as long as you leave your files in the Boinc folder alone, you wont lose your WCG WUs. :up:

I'm still struggling to find out how to setup Swan_sync. I've looked through the various threads and can't find anything. Google has not been my friend either. I've never changed any environment variables nor know where to look. Could someone take me by the hand and walk me through it :D

My old monitor was my TV which could only do 1200 x 1024, but that was stretched really bad as it was widescreen :down:. 2550 x 1440 is a bit of a jump ;P

As far as gaming is concerned; my x-25 80gb is nearly full and my internet isn't the fastest - takes the best part of a day to download anything from steam. That coupled with working full time and going to collage two nights a week doesn't leave much time for gaming. Though I'd like that to change :)

Okay so I think I've set it up right. Just created a new variable and set it as 0. Restarted my machine and it looks like below;

Boinc still shows the current active tasks as only using 0.05 cpu. I take it the next tasks which start running will use the full cpu? Or is something wrong?

I pretty sure you're ok. My understanding of SWAN_SYNC is that it "walls off" a processor/thread from usage by other apps requesting CPU resources - so your low priority GPUGRID app won't be starved for CPU cycles by other processes running at a >= priority.

GPUGRID WUs running by themselves won't come close to taking a full thread on your i7. SWAN_SYNC simply ensures that the CPU is available when the GPUGRID app needs it. The obvious example for us is when we're running WCG tasks and GPUGRID concurrently (as you certainly appear to be), but it should also work if you're running any other CPU-hungry app as well.

Now, in the interests of full disclosure, I'm not currently using SWAN_SYNC. My sole "hands-on" experience with it was last summer when I briefly had a GTX480 to play with, and I didn't have time to run it long enough to see first hand if it made any difference in PPD. There does seem to be a pretty solid consensus around here that it will increase GPUGRID PPD if you're running WCG at the same time. And IIRC, one of our authoritative team members (Snow Crash maybe?) said that you should also set the "% of the processors" value in BOINC Preferences to 99% when using SWAN_SYNC. :shrug:

I thought that when people were saying SWAN_SYNC allocates a cpu per gpu it meant that the cpu is utalised more i.e. +0.05.

After the SC week I'll disable it and compare. I've clocked both cards to 800 core 1600 shaders stock volts. I think it's a bit naff that you can't unlink them like on the 200 series.

Normally GPU will ask for CPU resources and have to wait until the CPU responds.
CPU apps run at Low priority and GPU apps run at Below Normal (which is higher than Low),
so they can get the resources they need without completely bogging down.

With SWAN_SYNC the app does in fact use 1 full core/thread ... it uses it to continually poll the GPU to see if it needs anything.
You only need to stop and restart BOINC and not your entire rig when you add/ remove this var.

Open up task manager and you will see 100% usage even when you have BOINC set to only use 99% of cores
(you are telling BOINC to use 1 less core/thread than you really have available)

What BOINC says about CPU usage for GPU apps is only based on the meta data of the app file itself so it totally meaningless
unless the precent is so high it decides to dedicate a CPU core to your GPU app automagically.
GPUGrid decided to let us make the choice on how much CPU we use to complete GPU WUs :up:

Please keep in mind that SWAN_SYNC should only be used for fermis ... never for 2XX.
If you do use it on 2xx cards the runtimes will actually get slower :shakes:

Kryja, how many WCG tasks are concurrently running? Six? Seven? I've got two GPUGRID WUs running (with no WCG tasks), and my CPU utilization bounces between 3-6 percent - i.e. 1/2 of a thread. Does this mean that the "polling" activity by itself uses up that much CPU? :confused:

damn... can't run it as a service... its SOOO much more reliable as a service... I will do this, but not sure if I will keep with it after the 7th.. knowing me I probably will tho... Now I am going to want to buy a bunch of nvida gpu's... sigh... another addiction..

As of now I have 2 GTS450's running. They are showing about 12 hours run time. Not sure if that is good or not.

Works fine with my 200 series, giving 5-25% improvement, depending on wu type :up: However at the moment, with the mainly KASHIF wu's, I don't have it enabled on most rigs as the trade off with WCG is not worth it. Best for me just to add another 275 :D

mmm...works on 200s as well? Interesting...what drivers/OS?

The more I learn about SWAN_SYNC, the more it seems to be a strange way to keep the GPU fed with CPU cycles. I mean, an entire CPU core/thread at 100% per GPU - even though the GPU(s) don't require 100% of a core/thread? :shrug:

Seems to me that if you're running dual GPUs, using the "% of the processors" value in BOINC Preferences by itself to free up a single thread would give the GPUs all the CPU cycles they need, yet allow you to run an extra WCG task (without even setting up SWAN_SYNC). Dunno. I'm probably still not getting it. For some reason, I still can't seem to get my head wrapped around this SWAN_SYNC thing. :confused:

Wait so can only one wu be crunched at a time? I have a 780i SLI board and was wondering if it would benefit to have 2 more gtx260's or if getting something like a gtx465 would be better? Also, I just noticed that with the 1 gtx260 I have I am doing about the same boinc points as about 6 quads 10 dual cores and 1 hex core.... HOLY CRAP!

You mean you have spare pcie slots and cards!? ;P

GPUGRID is the same as WCG, the more cores / cards you have in any one machine the more wu's said machine can churn out. If you have spare cards by all means put them on the grid.

If you're looking at your wu waiting to run and are confused that there is only the one current wu and one waiting to run that is perfectly fine.

I can't shake the feeling I'm missing something with your post, have I completely missed the point :)

I'd love to know alot more details on what SWAN_SYNC actually does. I can say that on Windows XP x64 it had no affect for me. Of course, no increase in PPD would be expected since the GPU sits at 94-99% usage with XP anyway. But I did test it just to be sure.

Well, I was just curious if I can only run one wu at a time per card. The gtx216 has 216SP and I just thought they would be able to break that up into more than one WU at a time, but I guess they can make use of all 216SP with the one WU depending on the coding?

And I was wondering what would be better: I have 1 GTX260 right now in a 780i sli board with 3x pci-e 16 slots. Would 2 more gtx260's be more benificial than say selling the gtx260 and getting a gtx465 and planning on SLI'ing that in the future?

Yes only one wu per card. Were you hoping for 216 wu's for your 260? Kidding :hrhr: And you're right about the coding part. I seem to remember someone (more than likely Snow) saying that the 400 series is still yet to be optimised and that the wu's are not taking advantage of the full card.

Ah right. Could you not just get a 465 and move the 260 down a slot? Then when you want to go sli move it to the third slot?

I think you should keep your 260, just oc the shadders to buggery. My 275 as an average over the past twenty days was ~45k. That's with the shadders set to 1620 or so.
