It already happened in the UK, I ordered my GTX 470 at £221, later that same day it dropped to £199. :(

Ah, how have I missed the price wars. I got my GTX 275 over a year ago for 130€, and they still can't beat it in price/performance. Sure some new stuff is there too to increase value, but ultimately it's the performance that matters the most. :yepp:

I'm hoping we'll get 480-class performance for 300€ soon.

Hip hip horrayy, this is rather unexpected by me (GTX 460 got slashed in price is somewhat justified, but using 530 mm^2 chip to fight toe to toe against a 255 mm^2 one ? gotta give the credit where it's due, nice effort nVidia). :clap:

With this, HD 68xx launch & MSRP prices won't hold so strong & very long, i always expect ATi cards to be priced slightly cheaper than their nVidia's counterparts considering their market share position & nVidia's strong consumer perception/brand value. With AMD's strong flexibility in their cost structure regarding NI generation cards, i don't think AMD will shy away from some heated price war (up to some point). :up:

cheapest atm 460 1gb here is 235us.
cheapest 470 is 326us.

and if the price cut comes, then the 6800 series got to have a 8800gt price level as those prices will be adjusted the coming days.

A price war is always good news.
I was hoping nVidia would do "something" to end the last years "peace" and push the prices down in this round.
This move means nVidia is serious about fighting back, and hopefully they will release a refresh or new GPU too, soon.

Who cares if nVida or AMD bleed, or what's their cost/size? I hope they both can bleed, as long as we can get better prices.

This price war is a welcome news for use frequent consumers of GPU. It will hopefully push forward better and cheaper high-end cards from both camps soon, too.

A few have been trying to discuses yield, size, transistors, cost to speculate that nVidia can't cut prices. But when they reality slaps in their face, and a good price-cut shows up, they get really confused what GPU-discussion should really be about.

Only shareholders and those on the pay-list av these companies care about those kind of BS. We, the real frequent consumers av GPUs, like to see the end of "peace" which can push down the prices down, not matter what it costs to AMD or nVidia

Anyways, are you a shareholder or on the pay-list of these companies? Why should you care, otherwise?

The fact is, a good price-cut is a reality, no matter what is behind it. This means the end of last years "peace", which will give us better GPUs with better prices in this round. That's all that counts to us frequent consumers of GPUs.

EDIT:
We can always go back to yield, die-size, transistors (and other BS) that a few has been speculating about for a good while now. We can again speculate why a price-cut is not possible for nVidia, and deny the reality on hand, but who cares why and how it happed?

My current card died last week, it's been hard enough getting on without it. So I ordered the 470 after my regular site dropped the price. I thought that might have been the Price cut.

Nope it was only to lure in extra customers, the next day they drop the price again :(

The card went from 256, to 221, then that same day to 199. Today they dropped it to 189. :mad:

some stores do price match up to 30 days
cause they know you can just return the card for the price you paid, and buy it back cheaper right off the shelf. but as long as you can return it as new to avoid restocking fees and whatever else. it might be worth a call to see if they can do it.

thats why i think its worth a call, they know they would have to go through the process of shipping a product back out. you might be able to simply have them price match it for current, minus a cut for restocking fee, and walk away with a portion of the savings.

I would call that real dedicated to flavor, even many will call me a hard AMD fanboy but I do run all Intel at home for the moment.... with ati off course since Nvidia nocked me down for a very long time with rebrands.

Nah, the place i got it form it well known for price gouging for the first few weeks.

And the 470 is a good replacement for far cheaper than what I got my old card for.

my friends corsair hx620 started acting out and wouldnt boot with his pc, an amd 6400+, gigabyte m770-ud3, single hdd and a gtx 460 oc but when we tested it in my sys with a gtx 470 and 2 drives in raid 0 it started just fine... so i would not be so worried about picking a gtx 470...the heat is not so bad, it was 1000 times worse with my old 8800gtx

That is a HOT price for the GTX470. Actually, I'm stopped by my quest for silence as well as fear of new stuff being released soon.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm delighted the GTX470 has dropped that much. That's a ton of performance for $260. But at the same time that doesn't stop me from having thoughts about how nvidia exactly is making money by selling them as cheap as that. Or how much board partners are losing. Or something.

dude you are seriously not helping my spending problem
i have to see alot of reviews for overclocking first. its interesting the 6850 are almost all custom, while all 6870 are reference cooling.

I don't know anymore, 470 with this price cut looks so much attractive and it can easily be overclocked to 900Mhz from 607Mhz that is almost 50% overclock. :cord:

Got headache now picking a new card as replacement for a broken GTX 280, GTX 460 overclocks well 850~950MHz or so depending on your luck and can now be had very cheap but then HD6870 also got a nice price/performance/power consumption ratio. If only Cayman also had been released at this point.

Yeah, that's right RPGWiZaRD, quite an headache ... Not so easy to make a choice ... GTX 460 OC performs quite well but consumes more but those HD68X0 are really cool, especially HD6870.

Cayman is the next step and it will probably bring massive enhancements :up:

With the way nVidia aggressively responding in adjusting their card value with the advent of Northern Islands family cards & prices falling everywhere, i think it would be wise to wait a month till Cayman arrives and the picture gets clearer. We might be pleasantly surprised regarding HD 6970 & HD 6950 pricing structure and its effect toward competitor price (hey, el cheapo GTX 480 for teh win !).

Ofcourse, you still have to monitor these AMD new gen availability, if there's a sign of short supply in 255 mm^2 Bart, then things won't get any better for the significantly bigger (390 mm^2 ?) Cayman & waiting might not be the best avenue for you anymore. Regards. :)

I'd like to wait but I've already waited 1 month for Barts and don't think I'd stand using a 7900GTO for any longer. :p: It's either GTX 460 1GB or HD6870 but dunno which to pick, GTX 460 can be had for like 50 EUR cheaper around here, 192 EUR for a 1GB Palit Sonic GTX 460 and the only shops that's listed HD6870 but not available yet priced them all at 249 EUR (30% higher), with these prices GTX 460 looks to have perhaps more value. Cayman is probably gonna be rather expensive, I generally try to stay below 300 EUR for a gpu, could spend 350 EUR if it's really worth it and Cayman Pro will most likely not end up much below 350 EUR in Finland at least (corresponding to $350 in the US).

I bought my 4 GTX470's with price of 199euros (277dollars) each, its true that they are actually Point of View GTX465's but since PoV just reflashes GTX470 cards to GTX465 i dont really care :).
Also i bought 4 GTX480's with 380-420euros each and did throw waterblocks on em.

Wondering why PoV GTX460 768M price is at 206euros when GTX465 is at 199euros, some other GTX460's are priced around 160euros.

I can see GTX460, GTX465, GTX470 and maybe even GTX480 prices to come down by 10-30 dollars, nvidia needs now hell good price management to sell more cards than AMD with HD6850/70 and later coming HD6950/70.

Asus HD6870 is priced at 249euros and HD6850 is priced at 189euros at one of the finnish online computer stores, i can say thats GTX460 killer price only 29euros more than it.
