Viewsonic to launch an 3D 24" Full HD LED screen

NVIDIA may have been banging on the 3D drum for months, but it's now AMD's turn to play the same tune.

The launch of the company's Radeon HD 6000-series graphics cards will next week add a further few 3D capabilities to the Radeon line, including full support for Blu-ray 3D through the inclusion of Multiview Video Coding (MVC) in UVD 3.

It's no surprise, then, to see the AMD 3D-certified displays beginning to appear on the market. First out of the gate is ViewSonic with the 24in V3D241wm-LED.

Shipping with a pair of 3D active-shutter glasses, the LED-backlit display offers a 3D-enabling 120Hz refresh rate, a full-HD 1,920x1,080 resolution, a 2ms grey-to-grey response time and a quoted dynamic contrast ratio of 20,000,000:1.

Stereo speakers are integrated to provide a basic four watts of audio output, as is a USB port for the bundled glasses, and users are given a choice of HDMI, DVI or VGA connectors.

Commenting on the launch, Darren Grasby, AMD's corporate vice president of EMEA sales, said "the ViewSonic V3D241wm-LED is an ideal match for AMD Radeon graphics cards, as it will enable one of the most compelling stereo 3D experiences currently available."

The ViewSonic V3D241wm-LED should be popping up at retailers right about now priced at £330.

Seems like the first real steps from AMD in the 3D market. And the screen packs a few features I've heard members requesting for a long time (24" Full HD LED 3D screen)

They did have support for iz3d iirc, but it's good that they get more manufacturer support. Looks like they still won't do their own 3D glasses though, but I suppose bundling the glasses with the monitor makes sense.

Led backlighting and 24" instead of 23" ccfl is a welcome update, gg Viewsonic. :)

i have the 22" LED and i do like the colors, some viewing angles are ok, but overall its a vibrant monitor with good black levels. no HDMI for whatever reason. but built in speakers, and 7lbs, and 130$, im really happy.

so after the lg w2363d and the benq xl2410 this is the 3rd 120hz panel with led backlight - nice. however, it's probably a 23,6" screen as well. i don't like the pixel pitch on these screens :(

From my understanding, this will only accept a 3D signal over HDMI 1.4a which means at 1080 it will be refreshing at 48/48. NOT 60/60.

HDMI 1.4a:

720P = 120Hz
1080P = 96Hz

BenQ XL2410T 120Hz that already been available for a week in Sweden is at least using LED backlight. Looks like it's also a really good monitor, I wouldn't be suprised if it was better than this ViewSonic.

Lots of features on this BenQ which probably will be hard to beat, matte bezel for minimal reflections, height, pivot and swivel adjustable stand, "instant mode" to reduce input lag to minimum, overdrive can be turned on/off, besides the usual r g b settings it also got hue, saturation and gamma adjustment, picture-by-picture support, also supports running 17" 1280x1024 5:4, 19" 1280x1024 5:4, 19"W 16:9 1440x900 and 22" 1680x1050 16:10 with built-in scaling. Two top CS players HeatoN and SpawN have cooperated with BenQ in order to make it as good display as possible for competitive gaming. Price in sweden & finland is like 4000 SEK and 400 EUR respectively, should translate to ~400 USD in the US at sites like newegg and it's already confirmed to be working even with ATI cards at 120Hz and not only in native res but low res like 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 etc. as CS nerds keeps using. xD

Backlight bleed is also quite low for a 120Hz display, remember 120Hz monitors are brighter than normal 60Hz ones due to it needs to be bright when using the 3D glasses so this will ofc affect BLB a bit as well but this BenQ has acceptable BLB for a bright 120Hz display:

all i care about is dvi and pure 120hz :p:

@RPGWiZaRD: yeah, the benq looks pretty good. however, benq isn't the most famous brand for image quality though, but oh well... i've been waiting like ages for the LG, but the reviews i read about it didn't impress me at all. so i'm glad for every alternative i can look into.

i think that that is for bluray and split screen signal only, i thought that hdmi1.4 would do alternant frame or split frame so it should alow 1080 with 120hz if its a dual link hdmi

@rpg, isnt the benq a 120hz with no glasses, its not for 3d use just 3d vision, or did they make one for 3d as i though this veiwsonic was the 1st 1 panel 3d monitor

What's wrong with the IQ? I don't have that much experience of BenQ displays but I thought there was nothing wrong at all with the G2420HD that my school has recently bought that's also a 23.6" 1920x1080 display with same shape as this 120Hz minus the stand. BTW a guy posted some sample screenshots but he could have used a bit more neutral settings tho IMO but at least colorbalance looks great (I wouldn't concider brightness 100 and contrast 81 and using a preset "photo" mode to be an accurate calibrated setting exactly on a 120Hz display but at least the colors will look like they almost leap of the screen then :rofl:) Contrast looks to be quite good, prolly around 900:1 but that needs a proper analytical review to confirm it.

Ya I suppose so, the BenQ is meant to be used with 3D vision glasses if u wanna use it for 3D but BenQ BARELY even mentions the 3D support, this monitor is all about 120Hz/FPS gaming for hardcore gamers which I like and would like to support BenQ for doing that. :D Probably my next monitor whenever it becomes available in Finland.

Oh and BTW this would explain the huge delay of this ViewSonic 23.6" 120Hz monitor, looks like they got an offer from AMD to make it "the first AMD certified 3D display", otherwise this monitor was meant to be released already in like May - June this year.

Care to find a dual link HDMI 1.4a dual link cable somewhere? For that matter, find a HDMI 1.3 DL. Literally 99% of them are HDMI Type A/C. ;)

Aww no displayport :( if its a "AMD" screen it should have that when AMD is marketing DP so hard. Really dont get why a royalty free standard has such a hard time catching on when its far supperior for none hifi jobs like computer screens.

Also I want 1920x1200 @ 120Hz :/

hdmi dual link is by frequency not pin counts, so the physical cable is the same. and u can sync to a dvi dual link. but i do get your point as it says MVC and thats the one that u said

it is strange u would think that they would support 3d eyefinity, or maybe u can use the 2x dvi and hdmi now at the same time

+1 on the 1920x1200, both dvi and hdmi specs support it at 120hz for the max 120hz right now

well, IQ was probably the wrong term, but benq displays tend to suffer from backlight bleeding and poor brightness control.

there's a huge variance in panel quality with benq displays as far as i've experienced. whereas some of their screens are very decent, others are utterly crap. i've never seen such a variance in panel quality from other brands like LG or samsung.

i didn't have any contact with benq monitors for the atleast 1 or 2 years though. maybe they improved - but i seriously doubt that ;)

Yes, but a HDMI cable has to be classified "Type B" for dual link certification.

if it will run 120hz refresh over dvi then it should work with the 3d vision kit, or with a gf104 and newer (so all the fermi but the gf100) that have hdmi 1.4a with the glasses the monitor comes with, but the older ones may work since ati cards work with power dvd in 3d mode on 3d tvs.

Not necessarily. Compatible polarization angles and certifications are necessary for 3D Vision to work.

That's a nice screen! Thanks for the link. This is the first monitor I've seen in the last 3 years that I would consider upgrading to from my aging Dell 2407. The specs and price seem great...let's hope it arrives in US retail channels unchanged.

The only problem with this (a major one) - "it's based on a TN panel"... If you move your head when watching a movie as a reaction to a 3D scene - it my end-up being displayed incorrectly and that could ruin your movie experience. And it's "23.6 not "24 - not that it's that important, yet for me this is still junk same as any TN panel and LED can help much with that.
