Easy method to predict OC capabilities in current Nvidia GPU's

Hi all!

I have been testing several GTX 480 reference cards on aircooling and LN2.
I usually always test cards on aircooling and then on LN2.
This time I found something new on Nvidia cards.

On current generation cards you can easily see the P0 performance level voltage.
Just open the Nvidia inspector and open the overclocking page.
On the slider on right you can see P0 performance level voltage.
If it does not work you can check it with multimeter in 3D load etc.

P0 is very interesting value,
cause it will tell us few important things.
Lower voltage means directly lower leakage,
cause signal can be delivered inside GPU with less energy.
Higher P0 voltage will mean that the core need more voltage for same data output,
so more energy is lost and more unnecessary heat generated.

GPU's with low P0 value will work cooler and what I have been told from my sources,
there is higher thermal shutdown treshold on these GPU's as well.
So, if you need to pick some GPU for testing,
try to find low P0 ones.

This is nothing that new for most of us,
but now it is easy to see and predict how your card will overclock.
There is easy way to compare GPU's and it is fixed voltage.
If you use for example 1.07V voltage and 100% fan speed max overclock is correlating with P0 value in most cases.

Now I would need to ask you guys put some input on this thread:

Reference GTX 480 designs use 1.07V and 100% fan speed. Then try to run 3Dmark vantage and report the OC results here.

What I have seen in my own tests:
P0=1.063V / MAX OC on air = 775MHz in 3DMark Vantage
P0=0.985V / MAX OC on air = 900MHz in 3DMark Vantage

P0=1.063V / MAX OC on LN2 = 1100MHz in 3DMark Vantage
P0=0.985V / MAX OC on LN2 = 1300MHz in 3DMark Vantage

This thread is here to help you pick up the best cores for air, h2o and LN2 overclocking.
I hope at least few will bother to run few tests and let us all know the data.
This is confirmed information already from my sources, so there is no need to try to argue :up:

P.S This prediction method is proven to work on GTX 460/470/480 cards. It should work same way in all GPU's which have P0 3D VID values + powerstates.

What about factory oced cards with custom pcb and mainly custom bios from AIBs. Can we predict the same with those cards.
I know that Galaxy has set the P0 to 1.000 for all their GC Ed GTX 460s as those come factory oced. I have used two of these and both had exact same P0 values.

I can contribute my findings once I get my gtx470 tomorrow.

So far this information have been proved correct with reference design and in some custom designed cards too.
If some vendor set P0 to some fixed value, then you can not see anything of course.
Then you just need to test cards separately.

Would you get a better chance getting lower PO with a superclock card vs the normal gtx 480 ? I'm talking about EVGA cards

in general i agree ( as with CPU's VIDs) but there can be exceptions.. like in my case.. 1st 470, vid 962mv, def clocks stable with 0.887, 2nd 470 VID, 937mv, stable at default clocks, with 0.925!!...

Well, I did save $100 being open box, lol. Took me 4 hours to get into windows with it. Not sure if anything is wrong with the card or not at this point. VERY VERY confused....

Anyways, I'll try to OC this guy and see if I can do anything with it.

bit of testing on the GTX480.. 800/1600 at 1.013v with no errors as long as the core stays under 70c so far.. fan at ~55-65%

Try 1.07V and 100% fan. You should get 875-900MHz with that card, if your room is not like sauna or something.

Question for all you guys...

What are you "testing" your card with? I ran kombustor for a while in benchmark and stability mode. Right now, here's what I have stable...

GTX470:

Core Clock: 800mhz
Shader Clock: 1600mhz (still linked)
Memory Clock: 1713 (have not played with this.)
Core Voltage: 1.050 still (on air, stock cooling)

These settings also run the free version of futuremark without any tearing, pixelation, or other issues.

What else should I try?

It's been said that EVGA bin the SC cards. I just ordered two of them, I'll let you know the P0 volts. Though, EVGA says the SC+ editions have lower temps, due to the bracket, but after seeing this, I'm assuming they bin those cards with low VID.

Kombustor is REALLY REALLY "LIGHT"....

when kombustor runs "stable".. Crysis WH bench could freeze in 1st minute... or even oldie COD2 in DX7 mode can freeze after some time... , for quick find of major instability might be good.. but is same quick a run of crysis wh benchmark run/freeze ;)

Well, Kombuster does push my cards for high heat, but IT does not represent gaming scenario, 4870 with 1.35v, could reach 870 on kom, but can barley run 815 on BC2.

Alright, well, I don't own Crysis, so I'm downloading S.T.A.L.K.E.R Call of Pripyat benchmark. I figure that should be good enough, no?

Most games that support DX10/DX11, should push current gen cards far enough to find a sweet stability spot. DX9 games like CSS, or cod4, will not push it as hard. Although COD5 may.

This is perfect benchmark for stability.

Download full version and run the extreme preset. If it can pass, it is game stable almost for sure.

I was testing with heaven :p

With fan at 100% and 1.07 I managed to get through it at 910.

for 24/7 i'm running 800 at 1.05 with fan on auto.

So my guess about the overclockability was somehow correct. I always use vantage, so GT2 is making the difference in the end in my own tests.

I've notice this too on my 3 480 i,ve had. 1=1038mv, 2=980mv 3=1075mv

on water
first one max @ 930
2nd one max @ 950
3rd one max @ 888

you don't really need nvidiainspector, just check stock voltage in afterburner
i wish that 2nd card didn't died it looked like a monster!!!

I was still able to bench with STALKER and keep 800/1600/1750 stable right now on stock volts (1.050). I'll just see how far I can push this before moving the voltage up.

What is safe voltage for 24/7 on these cards? Some are binned low while mine is on the upper end.

Hehe Sascha! If I have not made any agreement with some third party, I am glad that I can share my information. No one can limit our freedom of speech on this one :D

AMD have been using low leakage chips long time. 5970 would not have been possible with normal Cypress GPU's. AMD also sold these low leak chips to vendors with better price.

Leakage and LN2 is interesting story. There is many other variables, which affect overclockability on LN2, so it is almost impossible to say, what some chips should do. On reference GTX 480 cards there seems to be almost perfect scaling, but with custom design like MSI lightning, it is more complicated. Power supply part is in major role on these cards, so high leakage and better PWM can produce very good results.

That is the problem with these high VID cards. You are already near the heat and voltage limits and you don't have much headroom. You propably need to raise voltage and then you will get too hot very soon. It is sad, that we have this type of GPU's in the cards which cost so much.

Try with fixed voltage, when you test Heaven. (1.07V and 100% fan) Then we can compare the results with others. Then you can of course try how high it can go with more voltage.

Yes, afterburner show it as well.

That second card would have been very good on LN2 as well. Why all the good ones need to die :( I have one similar card and that is so far the lowest VID value I have seen. (0.980V or 0.988V)

2 460's tested for this method of "binning"

1. 1.00v air 920 ln2 1090 1.21v

2. 1.027 air 920 ln2 1120. 1.21v

I swear thuo some of my 4xx cards should say POS in that box :D

Hmm..it might be that P0 VID can not make any difference in some GTX 460, cause some other things are limiting. In GTX 460 case it is most likely the PWM part and temperature.

I'm testing my two cards now in 3DMark Vantage GT1&2

Gainward Ref.(Green PCB) 1.063v stock vid: 850 core at 1.075v (MSI AB, can't take real measurements)

Asus Ref. (Orange PCB 1.013v stock vid: 870 core at at 1.075v (MSI AB)

I am not sure can it be overflashed, but all my cards still have original P0 values after bios flash. So this value is stored in the GPU like VID values are in CPU.

1.075V seems to be highest stock P0 I have seen. How does the card overclock?

it is weird when i set 1070mv in afterburner og nvidiainspector it is way higher measured and i have to set it at 1056mv to measure 1069mv but af shows it at 1029mv in AF wierd but at 1069 id did 855mhz on core at 100% fan in vantage

don't worry about that AF is not that precise at reading voltage, from what i've seen the value you set is pretty much the voltage you are running, forget about what AB shows after applying.

havent started ocing yet. Room is at 32°C at the moment. My A/C has gone to refilling of gas, should come in few hours. After that its oc time :D

I also have 0.925V Asus GTX470 but I never actually tested how far it can go.

Furthest I went was simply putting voltage to 1,087V, fan on 100% and than tried 860 on core. Didn't actually put much effort in finding core clock, 860 was just random number I chosen.
Passed Heaven and Vantage without problem.
I should really once take time and see how far it can go (currently working on stock :) )

#1 Asus GTX 480 - P0 = 1.012v - 920 @1.213v - 860 @ 1.025
#2 Asus GTX 480 - P0 = 1.012v - 920 @1.213v - 860 @ 1.025

Man. Both my GTX480s SC suck. One of them is 1.063V the other is 1.075 >:|

MSI 470 VID 1050mv max oc air 766mhz/1866mhz 94c load 1087mv // water 850mhz/2066mhz 1137mv 49c load. More volts causes grey/pink screens. Need ocp mod?
POV 470 VID 1037mv max oc air 788mhz/1840mhz 90c load 1087mv // water 850mhz/1990mhz 1150mv 48c load. More volts doesnt help much, could maybe hit 866mhz.
PNY 470 VID 1000mv max oc air 833mhz/1866mhz 72c load 1087mv // new card - block tomorrow.

Holding true here so far... New PNY card looks to be impressive. POV card went in a friends pc. MSI is mine as is the PNY. May have to try and sell the MSI to buy another one to match the PNY - ie not a dog. The PNY card was an import, the POV card and MSI card are both from different UK retailers. I suspect some sorting is going on in order to be able to uphold the longer warranties on certain card models (and outside europe - US warranties are way better in general). Bought the PNY on that hunch. Glad I did, but can't say im right on that basis. I havent seen a good UK card yet outside of EVGA (now lifetime warranty here too on SC/SSC/FTW parts co-incidentally). Probably just paranoia :p:.

there seems to be a higher chance to have a good clocking card if it has a low vid, but the differences seem to be rather small, at least on air and from the numbers you guys posted so far...

thesis: lower vid = higher oc
the 3 480s with the highest voltages all clock notably below average
one of the worst reported 470 cards has the highest reported vid
the 2 470s with the lowest vid are notably better than the rest

counter thesis:
rank 4, 5 and 6 of the 480s clock almost the same as the 480s with the lowest vids, at least on air and water
the card with the lowest reported vid for a 480 does great on ln2 but is slightly below average on air
even among cards with the exact same vid there are fluctuations of 33-75mhz, while the worst to best clocks are only 125mhz apart

from these results there is definitely a trend id say, but its not linear scaling...
lower vid = higher chance to have a good clocker, but the most obvious results are that high vid = almost certainly a bad clocker

for 470s the trend seems to be stronger than for 480s from these numbers, which makes sense as there is more binning going on for 470s than 480s...
theres a much wider range of gpus with different specifications that can end up as a 470 than there are for a 480 candidate.

for 460s there is no clear trend from these few numbers...
the lowest vid clocks the worst and cowie tried two cards and found the higher vid card to clock slightly higher...

But we need to remember, that there is other variables which will affect overclockability as well.
Biggest effect will come from temperature, so I usually test in same air temperature in my work room. If room gets few degrees hotter, it can cause some difference.

In the end, the chart looks exactly like expected. Thanks again!

Tried Heaven again with extreme tesselation and everything maxed out on 1680*1050.
Vent was on 100%, voltage 1,087V and memory at stock.

Passed successfully with core on 880 without any artifacts, when core was set at 885 test failed.
So, at Heaven maxed out stable would be core on 880.

Not getting great results under water from the PNY card. Memory is poor - maxes at 1925 and I cant get the core over 895 without furmark hardlocking. Could be down to running sli and not synching the clock speeds between the cards.

I saw a large gain going to water form the other 2 cards - I think this is down to the huge drop in heat. The third card ran some 20c cooler on air though so Im leaning towards the smaller drop in temp giving me less of an oc increase.

My GTX480 (P0 level 3 as set in Inspector) seems its at it stable limit at 870MHz @1.138 with memory OC to 4200MHz, but if I try 880MHz with same vcore stressing with EVGA OC Scanner I hear electrical zapping sounds coming from the card, doesn't happen with OCCT though. It isn't capacitor squeal either! I understand that cards with a low PO value OC better, but then why are we able to change the P0 level in Inspector?

Another 460 hawk i tested,this one goes with SF3D's theory.
P0 1.037

AIR 893 1.21V LN2 1080 1.27v

Highest P0 volt card and the lamest one of of three i tested air and cold.

Review card. lidless. P0=0.962V.

970/1940/2200 at 1.275V, plain water, GPU block only.

The interesting thing is, that when you push your card to the maximum clock and you do not use fixed voltage, cards start to act more unpredictable. (quite obvious)
Well, that is only partially true. There is thermal shutdown mechanism still active on these cards, even all other protection is shutted off with modifications and software.
The cards which can scale with voltage are in the top of the chart and the cards which have thermal issues are on the bottom. (see reference / lightning)

How about 0.937V P0? 1000Mhz MaxOC? I got that one in my GTX465 (later i flashed it with gtx470 bios successfully).
Only thing that limits the oc atm is my PSU on my HTPC, might need hook this up to my intel machine later for more testing.

At the moment 850/1700/2000 but my 500W Antec PSU on HTPC cannot hold much more load on 12volt rails, those rails are allready at nearly its OCP limit at 34A @ 12v.

My GTX480 doesn't even come close to the voltage you used (P=0 1.063), I'm at 850Mhz, 1700MHz and 4400MHz at 1.138V. When at 880MHz my card starts buzzing and whisling to a point where I don't care to hear that crap, my temps approach 60C at 880MHz!

Sparkle GTX 470, P0 = 0.975

need v1.025 on 800 mhz to pass furmark

GTX465 flashed to GTX470 tested with my main pc's psu, P0 at 0.937 and 940mhz @ 1.087 and 4200 on memory dont have time to start flash again to switch volt limits further, quite possible that this chip can reach 1000mhz with something like 1.113v or 1.125 or then i hit brick wall and scaling goes bad.

If you use VID 1.138 it is even more than I used on my tests. Check the table again. You need to read voltage in real time during 3D load. P0 1.063V and 1.138VID should give around 1.4V in 3D load :yepp:

No wonder the pwm is making some sound there :up:

Yeah the juice is usually 0.05V higher on my card than what i set in AB and above 1.3V it becomes super unpredictable. After my last Vantage benching session my card had deteriorted to the point it couldn't even do a measly 800Mhz (monitor shut off) but after a couple hours it started clocking again. Weird.

SF3D, one question, these cards scale real nice with extra clocks in Vantage but beyond 940Mhz core i wasn't getting any better GT1 scores, any clue as to what was holding me back? Even at 970Mhz i wasn't seeing any gains.

Remember, that you need to measure voltage from pcb during load, to be able to tell what it is for real. If you set 1.275V in afterburner, it is something near 1.4V based on your P0 VID. These cards really can not handle 1.4V+ on aircooling because cores are drawing too much current. When you cool it down to -150C current draw is a lot lower, so the PWM can handle more V.

Your card is near 1GHz, so it is coming really unstable or you are hitting minor CPU bottleneck. I guess it is the instability of the vga, cause CPU is making only small difference, when you are 1200MHz+.

3DMark06 Score 15,138 @ 850MHz, 1700MHz Shader and 4400MHz Memory.

I don't understand what it is you are saying, checking the table does exactly what? When I reset MSI Afterburner my Core Voltage (mV) is preset at 1.063V. My current overclock is unstable any lower than 1.138V. If I run EVGA OC Scanner or 3DMark06 these seem to trigger the buzzing sounds, esspecially if I forget to click "Unlock Power Draw" sometimes but not always. Is there something going on with my card? I think you need to treat me as a beginner, I'm new at overclocking! What the heck is VID and PWM? Huh? :confused:

Yeah i know man, i always use the MM. And actually 1.07V in afterburner is 1.12V real in 3D and drops to 1.01V in desktop. I'm on water by the way. Been atleast 5 years since i last fired up an VPC unit for subzero 3D benching goodness. Miss the old days.

My results for my Sparke GTX480 are:

On stock cooling
P0=0.987V
914/1828/2000 @ 1.13V passed 3DMark Vantage (maybe go higher with OCP mod)
930/1860/1980 @ 1.13V passed 3DMark 06

I will try with w/c these days...

Is 1.075V safe on air? The evga gtx470 I have has .937V po and does 750mhz with no voltage change but only 825mhz with a bump to .987V. I was hoping it would do over 900mhz when I read this thread. Testing now at 1.075V and 900mhz.

On air cooling with good case air flow using Afterburner you can max out at the highest voltage Afterburn will go as long as you are within thermal limits, since the GTX 470 overclocks cooler, better and easier than the 480 I don't see an issue and long as you note you highest temperature after you overclock you card.

looks like its sucking loads of current, so thats how it can clock as well as others with lower volts, but ocp kicks in sooner...
i wonder how that gpu would do with a better pwm :D

hmmm so maybe comparing current draw can tell you something about how well a card will probably clock on ln2 than checking how high it clocks at x volts?

Purhaps you can help me here, the 480 card that I RMA'ed had P0=1.063v, my new replacement card is even better at P0=0.988v, but buzzes and squeals as if it were the same exact card! I strongly believe something else is causing my cards to buzz and squeal, both cards which are clearly different cards are acting like cloans in when and how they buzz and squeal at exactly the same MHz and while leaving them at stock voltages.

I'm not sure what wonder you are referring to, you haven't even overclocked it yet! Your idle voltage is nothing special at a P12 state, now it it was at .962v with P-State at P0 then you would have something special. If your stock voltage is 1.113v then that is the worst VID I have ever seen! :eek:

Okay my Inno3d GTX 480 stock voltage is 0.988V. At stock I can push it up to 800 and run the standard 3dmark benchmarks. At 1.075V I can go up to 880mhz core on stock air at 100% fan. At 1.1V I can run all of the 3d marks at 900mhz core and the highest the temps has gone with the stock cooler was 69C with the Accelero XTREME cooler it only went as high as 59C with 1.1Vgpu and the core at 900mhz while running benchmarks.

You left out your last two digits for Vcore voltage, the difference between 1.125v - 1.175v is a significant difference! Have you tried going further? Anyhow nice overclock! :)

Sorry... When I say 1.1Vgpu I actually meant 1.100Vgpu.
