MSI GTX 460 HAWK can reach 1Ghz mark :O

"MSI GeForce GTX 460 HAWK gets pixelized

Oh dear, a little birdie just flew in with some information and photo's. Looks like the MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone release was just a prologue. As you guys know the GeForce GTX 460 is a big success in terms of value for money. On launch date we have seen a couple of customized boards already.

The originally clocked 675MHz product overclocks well, Roughly 800 MHz is very normal and with a little voltage tweaking 900 MHz is manageable. I just received a screenshot and PCB photo though of the MSI GeForce GTX 460 HAWK edition."

GTX 460 @ 1ghz if stable would be pretty good in performance, specially after i saw its performance in 800mhz. Fermi scale good with freq increase because of some reason.

notice the chart in kombuster, it was on for only 43 seconds and looks like it was still heating up.
and there was a second one behind the other windows too
something just feels odd here, although 1ghz does sound nice

you of course remember that the shader clock on almost all nvidia cards is above 1ghz.... not that this really matters, comparing the clock speeds between amd and nvidia chips is a non-sequitur.

I don't agree about that. The Shaders clock showed is not the internal real one. It's double pumped so they say double mhz. :welcome:

But i agree 650 to 1ghz is awesome, but i would like to know what say my best friend : the Wattmeter and his girlfriend the sonometer. :rolleyes:

Obviously. The same thing happened with the 4890 @ 1GHz, everybody heard a lot about it, but actually seeing one do it... well that was a totally different story.

Bottom line, this is a marketing stunt, nothing more to it.

Well of couse clock speed is the ONLY thing that matters. I guess that's why a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 stomped all over the Athlon 3000+ @ 2.1GHz? Or the Phenom 2 965BE at stock speed of 3.4GHz runs away from the i7 975XE at its stock clock of 3.33GHz? :rolleyes:

So was the MSI Lightning GTX275 IIRC. That doesn't mean that that or 4890 or even 5850 is as fast at 1ghz. Apples to oranges.

what do u mean, ive tried like 5 4890 reference and they all did 1GHZ, i can even put mine over 1075 but then im short on cooling (hex core and a 4890 on 1 pa120.2 while running 1k rpm or so fans is limiting). the only ati overclocking problem ive seen is that people equate the reference overlocks as what all will do but sapphire and xfx like to put out their POS cards and people dont notice that they are non reference and cannot change the voltage.

i had figured that with some voltage it would clock up to about 1ghz like the gf100 would with a huge amount of cooling, but this should be doable on air

How do you people deal with the VRMs on those cards? A fullcover block? I'm afraid to touch the core voltage on my 280 due to the heat from the vrms. If I'm not mistaken the 280 also has even more vrms for the core than the 4890.

i think that the original g200 cards with the voltera use the same pwm as the 4890/4870. to cool them u can go with a full cover block, the termalright sink or i use the stock cooling plate for the PWM/ram and i have my rad fans blow right on them. the voltera pwm is also good to 120-140c so they are meant to get really hot

full cover blocks; proper (and thick) thermal pads + careful screw tightening (less is more!)

my 4870 always stayed below 80° and thie 5850 is unter 60° under full load :up:

but GTX280s are harder to mount as it doesn't have mounting holes lined up with the vrms (AFAIK)

nice to see some nvidia cards with huge overclocking headroom too; should be interesting to see how an overclocked gtx 460 does against 5770s@1ghz+ and 5850 @ 950mhz+

i wish there was a proper review with real test methods (like canucks) with 5770, gtx 460 and 5850 fully overclocked under water (ref designs)

Yeah, thats not the first time that I've heard that. I have a uni-sink in them now and they climb just over 90c. Sorry for going a bit off topic but where should you get concerned running them 24/7? I don't know how comfortable I would feel over 100c.

last OT post, i run mine at a max of 127 as the power starts the fluctuate there, and it takes over 1.4V and like 75A to do that normally for me (except for summer.)

i would like one of the swiftech mcw60-4870 bases but they are like $80 still and i would only want to pay like $20 shipped since i would not use it for to long and its outdated.

This brings back 10 years old memories in terms of CPU, back in 2000 both AMD and Intel released 1000 MHz capable processor like Athlon 1000 and some pentium III at similar speed. Than later that year Pentium IV was introduce at speed of 1400+ Mhz... So wouldn't mind seeing a HD 6850 at 1400 Mhz later this year...;)

I know 6 years ago we'd expect to see 10.000 MHz capable CPU's by now - yet that was a stupid idea, but still is 2000 MHz GPU's would be nice... preferably at 50W in idle and 100W in load... and also priced ad max 200$. :slobber:

Most 460's can change voltage via software right now and I think that's been possible since launch.

There is a quite large thread in the NVIDIA section on this very forum in which we post our GTX 460 OC's(http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=256635). 900 MHZ and above isn't really that rare AFAIK.

the shader clock is from NV running 2 operations per shader per clock, if u look at it like that then its like 2 scaller units. ati has 5 scaller units as each shader dose 5 operations per clock. so if u had both at 1ghz ati would be like 5ghz but instead of a shader clock they count each shader 5 times. the shaders dont work the same way and they take commands and cashe differently and im oversimplifying so im not saying that they are the same, just that the shader clock and somewhat the core clock dont matter when comparing other than the core clock % to % for overclock.

I'm sure 1GHz is possible with bit voltage boost looking how well it responds to even the small voltage boost u can do with today's GTX 460 bioses. Looks like they on purpose limited voltage for some reason, probably to be able to squeesh more cash out of super overclocked editions like this due to a higher voltage. :rolleyes:

the msi frozr is the best overall video card cooler ever. long line of successes using that type of cooler. so it is no surprise it performs well.

what is a surprise is that the new board design does 1ghz core without any work or extra voltage or special gpu selection. that is, if this is all true. it may not be. they may be hand selected chips. it may come with higher voltage. etc

Other than the cooler, it just has an extra power phase.

I would assume that these cards will manage to OC to 950-1000 Mhz, if you buy one and you dont even get 950 Mhz, I'd return it as it wouldnt be worth the extra cost over a cyclone or gigabyte.

I would believe when we see cards in hands of people other than reviewers.
I simply cannot forget how dismal the HAWK that actually hit retail were at clocking last time around. There are still posts and threads about them right here on XS. I had two. One was review sample, oced really well. I ended up buying it retail, and that was crap.

It seems they are high quality PCBs and coolers, but the GPus arent highly binned. You get a solid built card, but the overclock limits are completely random still.

In that case I really dont think the difference is worth it, they are £40 more in the UK.

1.18v(max ab) was good for 1000 for vantage.....then i thuogh i would be a smartass and try more(1.28v)passing my 1050 clocks i got on the palit with ln2,when a vrm took a dump mf'er i hate that.
i got greedy,i should have known better
my new record of 15 minutes to kill a card...fudge i hate when that happens :(

Exactly, it was like they sent selected cherry picked GPUs to the reviewers. Everyone got excellent results, and when people actually bought it, it was totally random. Some even oced worse than other standard reference cards.

I've got one of these coming, I probably would have done the same thing eeek. I'll definitely try to dig up some low profile sinks that fit under the main cooler for that vrm.

i just checked the ones that came with my as1 cooler,they fit ...barely but anything taller will crush down on the vrm rows if too tall
your going to like this card its a beast,believe the hype:p:
my new one should be here in a week or so.

Thermal tape + Enzotech VRM sinks work, even a big sink you can use a piece of thermal tape stuck across the VRM chips.

Its ridiculous that the Hawk version doesnt have VRM cooling.

MSI only allow these cards to be used at 1.212v max. Going over the Afterburner limit is always going to be a huge gamble. I would have definitely tried sticking on some VRM sinks before overvolting that high.

Im not so sure that this will work purely based on how vastly the overclocks on the GTX 460 vary from card to card. They are a lot more random than Intel CPUs are.

i was just messing around on air till i noticed 1.21v was good for 1050 for a vantage run with temps not over 75C.
so i figured out how to get 1.28v and was going 1100,mid way thuogh gt1 it blew a rod with smoke and sparks :p: nah just smoke.

Hi, how do you get 1.28V? by using Afterburner special version or just mod the PWM?

but the way, the jumper on the back of Hawk is designed for overclocker, one is OCP unlocker, which unlock OCP to higher value. the other one is to cut off thermal signal loop back of GPU <-> internal sensor, in theory, it can prevent thermal shutdown/slowdown we found on NVIDIA 40nm GPU with internal thermal sensor, but since no one has 460 copper container mount gear when I design this function, I guess we have to wait and see if it works (that's why MSI didn't promote this publicly, and position it as hidden features).

the jumpers should be left in those positions then for each purpose?or moved? that was what i was wondering.
i'll get back to you on that this week when i get another card on how the extreme cooling jumper thing works ;)
The ocp seems to work well:) you did great with this card man :up:
As for how i got 1.28v...thruogh software,btw ab beta 6x did not work(for me?) with this card.i think i'd rather not say publicly how i did it if it leads to more of my results. ;)

1-2 position means "off", 3-4 position means "on" for each function. if I remember right, 1/3 is for OCP unlock "OFF/ON", 2/4 is for XtremeCool "OFF/ON"

Afterburner beta 7 and above supports 460 Hawk.

Do let us know how Hawk performs under LN2, I really expect to see something amazing. :D

ln2,switches and military components but VRM prone to burn out :(

that is sorta a low blow i had more volts then any other card could even take without a black screen, was my own fault not the cards.
other card for this price have squat on the vrms??
i normally wont defend big companys but this time i feel like i should.
the issue here was between the keyboard and the chair. :yepp:

I have GTX460s topping out between 775 and 850MHz. You can adjust the voltage a little in Afterburner but only to lock it at 1087mV. A bit more than this might allow for 850MHz+ clocks.

Click the little arrow tab next to the voltage, and it'll expand to give you the three voltage options. I'm assuming you're using the latest beta of afterburner, right?

+100 = 1.21v thats all we get :)

i just got one in today same 920 core clocks with 1.21V

man it no wonder they dont come with vrm heatsinks you need the little tiny ones,ramsinks wont work the area is not level :(

same as mine too, i only can increase the volt to +100 and only get maximum 920.
