I want your GTX460 vBIOSes!

Title says it all guys ;) its for my own research purposes, and while I'm at it I'll also upload tweaked versions for people to try out.

nvflash update procedure

This is just a rough and quick explanation for people to reference to ensure they have a successful vBIOS flash.

Assuming you are going to flash from DOS (safest) and use a USB stick here is a step by step procedure to flashing your vBIOS.

- Download a USB boot utility and boot files
- Format your USB stick then run the USB boot utility to make your USB stick bootable, remembering where you downloaded the boot files to as you will need them
- Place nvflash and your modified vBIOS on to the USB stick
- Restart, selecting your USB stick either via BIOS or boot menu as the boot media
- After the USB stick loads the boot files type;

nvflash --protectoff
nvflash --eraseeeprom
nvflash -j -4 -5 -6 filename.rom

Thats it. Ctrl>Alt>Del to restart, run something like GPU-Z to verify the new clock settings and/or voltages and you're done!


Modified vBIOSes

Changes:

Max voltage limit 1.2v
3D GPU voltage 1.1v
2D GPU voltage 0.9v
3D GPU clockspeed 800MHz
Default fanspeed 30%
Memory speed 2000MHz (4GHz effective)
Max fanspeed changed to 100% where applicable

EDIT Does anybody know what the paramater -4 does in nvflash? I keep seeing it in a lot of batch files made by manufacturers but the command itself is undocumented in nvflash.

Where can I download the Fermi Bios Editor?

You will have to PM orbmu2k asking for it. I appreciate why orbmu2k is careful about handing it out, he doesn't want people ripping off his work. I've found people doing that with some of my work in the past :down:

Thanks Ket and Kaktus1907 for unlocking the Bios, but I will wait to flash my card untill the fermi bios editor is available to me or untill a new nvidia bios editor comes out that can read the GTX 460 because i'd like to check the bios myself before flashing.
I'd like to mention that my card goes perfectly stable at 820 core in Furmark and Folding@home with the stock Voltage of 0.975 mV. Even with higher voltage(1.081 V) nothing higher is stable and the driver has to restore itself in Furmark and Folding.
So i'd really like to try if more Volts will make it reach 850/900 !

I think I should probably feel quite happy then. My KFA 460 hits 880/4400 so far with 1.1v. Happy days :D

I can say without doubt 1.1v works on my KFA, temps are higher than with 1.087v by about 5c. 1.15v also works on my KFA, temps are 7-8c higher compared to 1.087v.

Non reference perhaps?

I'm 99% certain its reference. PCB looks identical to the one Gigabyte, MSI & Co use.

-4 -5 -6 on nvflash does the following:

Ignore device id
Ignore vendor id
Rewrite all blocks even if the same


No idea what order dude, just my notes from when i did the 7900gto to gtx flash.

Yep, I've done very little hex work with GTX4xx series.

Can this Fermi Bios Editor Lite 1.52 set clocks as well, and what about fan speed? I am DYING over here to set my clocks and adjust my fan slope in the bios so I can ditch Afterburner/Precision Tool altogether. I get screen flashes/flickers when my card jumps between 2D/3D using software and I think setting it in the bios of the card itself would remedy this. I would like to ramp up fan speed to 100% while gaming as it is still relatively quiet. Is this possible? Anxiously awaiting a fully working Nibitor, but nothing on the horizon yet.

FBE can edit clockspeeds, but not fanspeeds.

Do you using software 2D switching because of multi display setup?

This flickering on multi display setups is exactly the reason why nvidia does not full idle in this situation automaticly. This will not change on custom bios either. Its some strange behavior when using GDDR5 and lowering the memory clock while multiple displays are connected. Nvidia stated to this and sayed this is hardware limitation wich isn't fixable!

There are further impacts if you change P3 state memoryclock/voltage to different than P0. This will make impacts on software overclocking and voltage control.

If it were that easy nvidia or some aibs would already have done that. ;-)

Thanks for the reply. I suppose I will wait till an all in one solution is complete. I don't want to start ramping up clock speeds just to have the card running hotter than it should because of it. If I have to have software installed to control fan speed, I may as well control clocks as well until I can get a fully tuned bios the way I like.

BTW, what is the most recommended method of dumping the bios from your current card while maintaining 100% integrity. I don't want to flash someone elses bios in the future, I want to flash the exact one that came with my card, however edited. Thanks.

Use GPU-Z to get a BIOS dump, then when the time comes reflash your card from DOS with nvflash.

Hi there, yes, I am using multi display. I am simply raising the overclock via Afterburner from stock 715/1430/900 to 800/1600/1000. Card works fine this way, but periodically, my card will downclock to 405/810/900 and when it does then I get a quick flicker/flash. My card will then jump back to 800/1600/1000. Back and forth this goes. The strange thing is this. Since my card comes factory overclocked to 715, when the card is not overclocked via software, it still down clocks to 405/810/900 and back up to 715/1430/900 but no flickering/flashing. I think it only does it when clocking through software, as without Afterburner managing the clocks, it does not flicker/flash. I was hoping that if I just flashed the bios with the desired clocks and removed Afterburner altogether, this would no longer happen. All I want is fan control so I can set a customized slope to raise the fan speed and I will be set.

@ ket = almost all gtx 460 has FAN LOCK on 70%, could u make it 100 % ? plzzz

Fan lock was with older versions of Afterburner. Use nVidia Inspector, Xtreme Tuner or the latest version of Afterburner and all is fine ;)

By default the fans go to 70% max, this is an update to the card itself. 70% is max on all GTX 460 cards, no matter the card or utility used to increase the fanspeed.

@ gaul, you can override BIOS set fan profiles with any of the softwares I mentioned, not a big deal. FBE doesn't have the ability to change fanspeeds, just to change GPU / memory speeds and adjust voltages.

though I unfortunately don't have access to Fermi Bios Editor Lite, from the screen shots I have seen, I wouldn't know where to start on setting my clocks. The multiple tables with all the values completely throws me off. It isn't like Nibitor in the old days where you had 3 boxes, core, shader and mem and you simply typed in your values and voila. How do you go about reading all the tables and know which values to change and which not?

The values do throw you off to start with you need to look at the tables and see what does what. FBE doesn't seem to show you GPU speeds in the classic sence either, instead giving you shaders values to change (GPU and shaders are tied) along with the obvious memory values, FBE also chooses to show you more obscure settings such as maximum shader limits, which you can also adjust yourself. Some values are still a mystery even to me, the boxes don't seem to follow any set pattern. EG; Whats a maximum shader value for one P-State isn't in the corresponding box for another P-State. I also advise those who do have FBE to use voltage entries 0 and 1, NOT 3. For some reason 3 just doesn't work. Voltage value 0 corresponds to bootup/2D (probably UVD clocks too), while voltage value 1 is 3D voltage.

Although 90% of the values are still unknown, at least you know which ones to look out for and change for basics such as 3D clocks. It relates to Nibitor 5.6 mind you, but perhaps you can get something from it. Sadly, no fan support which is what I would really like.

AFAIK nibitor 5.7 won't support GTX460s, but they are working on that. IMO nibitor struggles to support new hardware these days, it relies on a engine and methods that were compiled 5 years or more ago, the whole application could do with rewriting from the ground up so it has a nice versatile engine like RBE does.

as far as I have read, the Nibitor which does support GTX 460 is currently done, but only accessible through donation only for the time being. It will be released publicly after that. Still no fan support though, that is still being worked on. I will wait and flash my card in one fell swoop once everything is 100% integrated and with full fan/clock/voltage support.

Good to know. They seem to really be struggling with Fermi support and I'll keep whipping it because I believe it to be true. Nibitor uses a very old engine, it needs updating to something flexible like Radeon BIOS Editor uses to make supporting new hardware much easier.

Hey KET, have you read this: "EVGA has already launched overclocked versions of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460, but now the company has enabled users to increase performance of the plain models with an overclocked BIOS, available free at the company website.

EVGA GeForce GTX 460 has a stock GPU frequency of 675 MHz and 1350 MHz on the CUDA cores. With EVGA's new BIOS it pushes the clock frequencies up to 720 MHz and 1440 MHz. Not quite up to EVGA GeForce GTX 460 SuperClocked (763/1526 MHz) but still an impressove boost completely free of charge for those ready to flash the BIOS of their graphics card.

EVGA has also raised the max speed of the fan from 70% to 100%, to ensure that the temperatures will remain in the safe regions when the load increases."
Now if you can find one of those flashed bioses you can probably unlock the fan to 100% on the other bioses too. I found this news on http://www.nordichardware.com/.

Unfortunately its not possible to extract the vBIOS from the package evga provide by itself, somebody would first have to flash the vBIOS then get a copy of it with something like GPU-Z.

I only have 2 768MB GTX460 vBIOSes. Neither are Galaxy, the 1GB cards are very popular in comparison.

Disconnect the blue wire on the fan wires where it plugs into teh card. Then your fan will run 100% all the time. Not the most elegant solution, but maybe it would help you :up:

heeh thanks for this, but I would still like 40% on desktop. I would just like to set my own ramp/slope like I did on my 8800 Ultra and GTX 260. Start at say 50%, after 60c increase fan speed till it hits 100% at 70c for instance. This way I am very quiet on the desktop, yet the card never breaks 70c full load.

techpowerup has nearly all gtx460 bioses in their database now.

too bad the new nibitor still doesnt support gtx460 bios.
I really need to lower the fanspeed from 40 to 30%, card is very loud.

BIOS got the same treatment as all the others I tweaked, 1.1v is default because its the next step up from 1.087v.

Many thanks for the gainward bios!! I'm now able to reach 9xx mhz @ 1.13v \o/. I will order a S1 (my 4th one! Besides the mounting, this cooling is AWESOME) and mod it to fit on the GLH like I did for the HD4770 back then!

Thanks for the confirmation. Here is to hoping Nibitor comes up with a customizable fan slope adjustment as found in previous Geforce cards. Was a God send being able to set exactly when and by how fast the fan should ramp up on my 8800 Ultra and GTX 260. I would like anything over 68c to have fan on 100% since it is so quiet. I would like to never break 70c full load while gaming.

Could be waiting a while for nibitor 5.8 ;)

I can completely understand the importance of the 'recommended linking' checkbox in FBE for only being able to adjust 'known and important' clocks, but what I did not realize is that it also dictates how the voltage changes are applied. Does anyone know if UNchecking recommended linking would be ok if it ONLY had to deal with the voltage settings? No clocks. When it comes to P00 and P03 I would rather not have them set to higher voltages than I need to in order to cut down on power consumption and heat. I am on a dual display setup so P08 and P12 have no meaning to me as my card never clocks down that low anyways. When idle on the desktop it gets set to P03 which used to use Voltage Entry #2, being my GPU Default of 1.000v. Now that I have adjusted Voltage Entry #1 to be applied to P00 for my 3D voltage level, it is automatically setting P03 to Voltage Entry #1 as well, despite me wanting this. If I uncheck recommended linking, I CAN set P00 and P03 separate from each other, meaning P00 is Voltage Entry #1 for 3D and P03 is Voltage Entry #2 for 2D desktop work (GPU Default of 1.000v) on my dual display, however is this going to cause a problem? I am hating sending more than 1v through my card just while surfing the net yet want the higher voltage to keep the card stable in 3D use so im stuck with both being set the same. FBE is a fantastic tool and my bios is near exactly how I want it minus fan slope control which it doesn't offer anyways, and now this little voltage niggle. I would love 1.000v on Desktop 2D use for P03 and 1.0xxx for 3D use instead of 1.0xxx 24/7.

Ok, so I got the answer myself. You can set the voltages differently from P00 and P03 from within FBE itself, however, once you save the bios and open it back up you will see that they have both been linked together again, so this method does not work. Boo!

What do you use to flash the Bios on these cards?

1GHz GPU isn't something thats all that easy. I'd say top quality air at least to attempt it. Got all my stuff for the new build at last so I'll be away for a bit tuning my system up.

Hey Ket, very nice work. I appreciate you time and efforts and those of the community. I have a pair of Asus Non-TOP 460 1gig cards that are going into a new system tomorrow. From what I understand, these cards are hardware identical to the TOP versions. You were right ...saved my bios with 0.4.4
It's an Colorful GTX460 with 1 GB.
It clocks to 875/1750/2300.

Could you please unlock it for me ?

Ket- I got my EvGAs in :) they are the OCed edition , I see we don't have those in the index yet . Seems like these need more volts then the gigabytes I had :-/ .. I'll shoot u a pm later tonight .

Could i flash my GTX460 1GB with the evga bios ?
Are the reference cards all the same ??
