Introduction

So it begins.. Fermi is released and the interwebz is bursting with reviews of nVidias new baby, GTX460, like a pregnant woman carrying triplets. Just like a new mother the internet is buzzing with excitement over nVidias GTX460 in forums and reviews alike. Amongst all the excitement and buzz that accompanies a new arrival few spare thought to the middle child, much less make comparisons to when the middle child was newborn. So today we answer the age old question thats on many peoples lips: Is the GTX460 1GB unquestionably the best high-midrange card or can the Radeon HD5830 salvage some pride? Read on to find out viewers.

Now, I'll admit I'm a rocker / metal head so I actually really like the packaging. Has everything I look for. Cool dark art, shiny, and BLACK. Aside from that everything is very well protected and you can be confident in your card arriving in perfect condition.

The accessories are your standard affair with one exception, KFA have included a mini HDMI cable! Top marks on that one.

The Card

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...t/STA60539.jpg

Not a whole lot to say here really. With the exception of the idea to make the HSF so you can easily clean the fan everything else is pretty standard. It is nice to see KFA remembered to put the VRM heatsink on though. *Cough* Palit Sonic Platinum.

The Heatsink

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...t/STA60547.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/bizket/hsf.jpg

Look at that for a stock heatsink. It looks like something you would plump a good £25 on if it were a 3rd party heatsink. The good news here is if you are looking for a good heatsink, you already have one really. Put your own fan on it and perhaps lap the base and your set.

Test setup & Benchmarks

CPU: Q8400 @ 3.6GHz 480FSB
Mainboard: Asus Maximus 2 Formula
RAM: 2x2GB OCZ PC9200 LV Platinum @ 1156MHz
Graphics: KFA2 GTX460 1GB
Sound: Asus Xonar DX 7.1 PCI-E
HDD: WD Black 640GB SATA2, 32MB Cache
PSU: XFX 750w modular
Drivers: Catalyst 10.3, Forceware 258.96
OS: Win 7 64bit

The benchmarks today will be;

Unigine: Heaven, Sanctuary, Tropics
3DMark Vantage
Crysis Warhead
STALKER: COP
Stone Giant

Without further ado, here are the settings and results of each benchmark.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...csSettings.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...rySettings.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...gsModerate.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ngsExtreme.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ry_tropics.jpg

Nothing particular to note. Just the GTX460 showing its superior muscles.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../460heaven.jpg

Theres no surprises here. The GTX460 1GB even at stock shows its mighty tessellation muscle and leaves the HD5830 as a trembling wreck in its wake.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...et/460_cop.jpg

Results are close here with the HD5830 beating the GTX460. Another result thats unsurprising as Stalker favors ATi hardware.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../460_giant.jpg

Again the GTX460 gives the HD5830 a good kicking in this tessellation test.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...60_vantage.jpg

Given all the extra muscle the GTX460 is supposed to have I was surprised by these Vantage results. I suppose it shows both nVidia and ATi equally take optimising drivers for benchmarks seriously. Hurrah?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...60_warhead.jpg

The GTX460 hands it to the HD5830 good and proper in Crysis Warhead showing its not size that matters, but what you do with it that counts.

Overclocking

Overclocking the KFA2 GTX460 1GB proved as easy as it ever is to overclock a graphics card. Sadly Afterburner was unable to make any GPU voltage increases. Wether this is a indication of the KFA2 GTX460 not being able to have software controlled voltages is unclear, but as KFA2 also offer this exact same card, only with a reference GPU clock of 810MHz, it seems very likely this model is just vBIOS GPU voltage locked. Nothing which can't be overcome.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...csettings1.jpg

As can be seen from the screenshot, I ended up with 830MHz on the GPU and 1115MHz on the memory. A overclock of 19% and 21%, respectively. Thats not bad, but I had expected just a tad more.

Lets see how that overclock effects performance.

Overclocked Benchmarks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ket/460_oc.jpg

Here we see the GTX460 really can handle whatever you throw its way. Turning in respectable results even in Unigine Heaven with 8xAA, 16xAF, and tessellation set to extreme. Bravo little GTX460, bravo.

Noise

Many have complained about the HSF design KFA have chosen to use stating that it is loud. Noise is very subjective from person to person but personally I did not find the fan to be obnoxiously loud up to 50%. Beyond that it did get rather irritating. I should point out at this stage that 50% was probably only tolerable to me because whilst dismantling the HSF for pictures I took it upon myself to add some vibration dampening to the HSF which likely has helped quite a lot.

Conclusion

Well, what can I say about the KFA2 GTX460? It looks damn beautiful, has stellar tessellation performance (learn from this ATi) and generally could handle whatever it was asked to with great performance. Sure, there were a few areas it had hiccups and after 2 years of Crysis Warhead being around I do expect a midrange card to be able to do a consistent over 30FPS even with insane amounts of AA and Enthusiast settings in Crysis enabled. One thing which did baffle me is the Desktop image quality with the GTX460. So much notably poorer it was I immediately checked my screen resolution after the driver install to make sure it was native as icons and text were a little blurry, to my dismay it was indeed at the monitors native resolution. Next came the eye test - I donned my glasses to make absolutely sure it wasn't just me - Nope, image quality was indeed lower on the desktop. Hopefully this is something nVidia will fix in a new driver as it does really spoil general use of this card. That said it should not detract anyone from buying this card, for the most part its lightning fast and will serve all but those gaming at the most insane resolutions well.

So, up pops the ultimate question. You are a gamer on a budget looking for a new card. Which is the best choice for you? Radeon HD5830 1GB or GTX460 1GB? Thats actually quite tricky to answer. On one hand the GTX460 1GB is clearly a better card, we expected that. However its also £45 more expensive than the HD5830 best case scenario. If you are looking for a creap and cheerful card that overclocks like crazy and you just want something for the now, by all means save £45 and opt for the HD5830. If on the other hand you want a card thats going to go the distance over the next 18-24 months, go and pick up a GTX460 1GB, you won't be disappointed.

The Good:

- Overclocks well
- Runs cool
- Reasonably priced
- Performs pretty well at stock
- Inclusion of mini HDMI cable
- Good tessellation performance

The Bad:

- 2D Desktop quality isn't very nice
- Above 50% fanspeed the noise is intolerable
- No core voltage adjustment (with the stock vBIOS and Afterburner 1.6.1 at least...)

*--EDIT--* 29/7/10 After some investigating the KFA GTX460 does indeed support voltage control but you need to use a utility called nVidia Inspector. As a result of increasing GPU voltage from 1.01v to 1.087v I was able to get a stable OC of 870/1740/2155.

Final Score: 8.5 / 10. We have a smoking gun!

No 5830 results stock and overclocked for both cards kinda left me hanging...

Nice review, and kudos to nVidia for an outstanding Fermi card. However, the Radeon 6000 series comes out this October...ehheeh :D

No stock results for the HD5830 because it sucks at stock. HD5830 only starts to shine when Its OCd, and even then it still convincingly gets beat.

What are the CP settings? Can you provide some pics?

thx , 2 game

CP settings are all standard, and with the exceptions of Vantage and stone giant, the other tests are built around real game engines.

Nice presentation, good notes:clap:

How about some more games?

You should have included stock vs stock speed and OC vs OC comparisions (in the same graph with ATIs OC speeds) just for comparision's sake... otherwise great job!

Trust me.. you really don't want to see stock performance of the HD5830 its pathetic. Even OCd you can't say the HD5830 performs good, it scrapes by with average performance at best when its OCd and only got a 7/10 when I reviewed it because OCing really is its saving grace. If the HD5830s didn't OC well, they would be lucky to get a 4.5 / 10 from me.

This review is good because it showing it takes overclocked 5830 to try to win over GTX 460 and still strugles. Don't expect stock vs stock to be any better.

Exactly. Comparing stock vs. stock would be like comparing a HD5890 / GTX480 to a HD5750. In other words, the HD5830 would get destroyed. Overclocked however the story is a bit different. The HD5830 still isn't good, but its not terrible either and can comfortably handle 1680*1050 with maximum details and 2xAA 8xAF. In comparison the GTX460 when OCd can handle 1920 res, with maximum details and 4/8xAA and 16xAF.

who the h3ll is kfa2?
and beautiful? god DAYM that card is ugly! :S
its a rebranded galaxy, isnt it? so whats the difference? more stylish packaging, is that it?

and wow does the 460 wipe the floor with the 5830, and the 5830 is maxed out and the 460 is at stock
really cant believe ati seriously tries to convince people that a 5830 goes head to head with a 460 :stick:
a 5850 would be a worthy advisory, but a 5830? please...

nice review tho ket :toast:

KFA2 are indeed rebranded Galaxy ;) I love the look of the card, not so much for the cheap nasty plastic shroud but the HSF itself, it is good. Any true modder won't keep that plastic shroud on :p: pricewise the KFA2 is probably the cheapest GTX460 1GB your likely to find in the UK @ £185. For the money KFA certainly give you a lot, mini HDMI cable and a heatsink on the VRMs are particularly nice to see

why did you post a poll if you don't even listen to what people say?

what about power consumption and heat?

I decided to give a unknown brand some publicity, nothing wrong with that. Besides, If I had bought the Gainward it would of been £15 more and I wouldn't of got a VRM heatsink (Gainward = rebranded Palit) much less a mini HDMI cable.

Ahh less monez great idea, im buying the cheapest 480's

Still with Palit/Gainward models you can adjust the Gpu voltage.
Check the back front of the pcb , don't the card have a voltage controller,
ON NCP5388(Nvidia reference) or ON NCP5395T(used on Palit/Gainward models)?
http://lab501.ro/wp-content/uploads/...12-460x580.jpg

http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/379/controller.jpg

If you find such a controller than there is hope, if you don't only hardware mod will work.
From what i know Galaxy is a subsidiary of Palit too so it's strange to Palit/Gainward to have these voltage cotrollers and Galaxy don't.

Strange thing is that in their review guru3d says that they could adjut the Gpu voltage to 1.08v on both models GC and SOC.
http://www.guru3d.com/article/kfa2-g...-soc-review/18

That reminds me, heres a pic of the voltage regulator on the KFA2;

Have you tried Extreme Tuner HD from Galaxy?
You might want to give it a try and see if voltage options are available for this card under that piece of software.

EDIT.
Just realized that voltage controller is up6206. It does not support I2C. Does it have secondary voltage controller chip like some MSI cards did in the past to have voltage control on their 5830 cards?

Did I not tell you this long before you bought the 5830?

You should have bought a 5850 like I suggested...

However, the GTX460 is a nice card. ...:ROTF:

Nice review mate, Should do it up against a 5850, even though im sure it will win! :)

There must be a secondary because if I use nVidia Inspector voltage can be adjusted up to 1.087v

I didn't buy the 5830 to use, I've made that quite clear numerous times. I bought the 5830 to review it now its had the benefit of some more mature drivers for it and to test ATi claims of it going head to head with the GTX460 (which we all know is BS, this review just unquestionably settles it). End of the day the 5830 is a midrange card (hence the cheap price of £140) with a highend product nametag. The 5830 is more like a 5790 or 5810.

Maybe you want to add that in the original post. Some people might be turned off from buying this card because they read no voltage control there.

I am getting the Galaxy branded card in couple of days hopefully for testing. Will check it out under my magnifying glass for secondary chip.

Let us know if you find one

Ok got my Galaxy GC edition 1GB.

Looks exactly same as this one.
But I have voltage control right out of the box with Afterburner 1.6.1. I hope you have enabled unlock voltage control under settings.
Nice clocker as well. Though noisy at even moderate fan speeds of 45%.
I will be taking this apart to redo the TIM tonight ( The card is actually running cool, so not really needed, but oh well, I gotta see it naked :P

Has exact same chip on the back

MSI afterburner with voltage option.

If anyone wants bios dump, let me know.

Odd.. everything there looks identical to the KFA but you can only overvolt to 1v? With nVidia Inspector the KFA can go to 1.087v.

No, 1v is stock voltage on this card.
It can go upto 1.087 like all others.

Here what it is able to do so far. Still no sign of sparkling stars ( artifacts that you get with GTX 4xx when you push too much. )

920 on a GTX460 is nothing short of amazing IMO. Wow...

In comparison, my crossfire 5770's hit 19-20k in vantage both at 1050 Mhz...

That 460 @ 900+ is like two 5770's @ ~stock. ...gasp.

Same thing i was thinking mate, quite amazed

The Bad:

- 2D Desktop quality isn't very nice

what do you mean by this?

yeah i wondered about the 2d iq hint as well...
is that with analog dsub or dvi or with digital dvi?

and oh well, if they are cheaper than anybody else, lets hear it for KFA2! :toast:

Its as I described in the conclusion. When the driver had installed and I rebooted desktop image quality was noticably blurrier vs. the ATi card. It was so blurry I thought the monitor hadn't defaulted to its native resolution, but it had. I put my glasses on too to make sure it wasn't my eyes playing tricks on me, but no, it was deffinately blurrier. The connection being used was DVI. I don't know what nVidias deal is with continuing crap desktop quality, but since switching to modded Quadro drivers desktop quality is better, but still not ATi level.

If he is coming from ATI, there is slight difference in default colour vibrance and how desktop appears even with digital signal.
Its marginal but its there. Everything appears slightly blurred on GTX 460. Dont know if its the way cleartype works differently on the two or some other reason behind this, but its noticeable.

I'll play with a few CP settings to see if the picture can be cleaned up. I do think nVidia should address this though, it does spoil general use of the card.

My galaxy card came with a great tweaking utility much better than the afterburner. It also has a hud when bechmarking much like a FRAPS overlay

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...magicpanel.jpg

Thats Xtreme Tuner HD. It is a pretty comprehensive bit of software even including a built-in utility to flash your graphics card BIOS. I would rate it higher than any other OC software.

I have the same problem

Its been known for years that ATI has better 2D image quality than Nvidia. I've swapped camps many times over the years because I'm not brand loyal, but its always immediately noticeable when switching from ATI to Nvidia at just how inferior Nvidia's 2D image quality really is. I really prefer ATI cards when their 3D performance isn't too far behind Nvidia just because I spend 75% of my time doing day to day tasks where the ATI cards are clearly superior in image quality.

^^ +1. I'd like to know why the hell nV don't sort their 2D image quality out. Talk about lazy. Its more than likely just really old predefined display settings within the driver doing it.

The gamma profiles are always darker on Nvidia cards for some reason, colors don't seem have quite the same pop either and I'm not saying that ATI is oversaturating colors, they just appear more natural, Nvidia's colors always look a little washed out. And then I can't really explain why ATI cards always seem to have sharper text, Nvidia always looks just a little less sharp.

You can mostly compensate for the gamma and color issues with some work in the Nvidia control panel or your monitors settings, but you shouldn't have to do that when ATI can get it right out of the box. However, I've never been able to compensate for the slightly less sharp text using Nvidia, even with MS Cleartype. For what its worth though, I think your eyes do adjust to it with a little time and it doesn't bother you as much, but when you switch back to an ATI card, you'll be thinking, wow, what have I been missing. It hits me the same way everytime I switch.

I havent needed to change any monitor settings in that way, but I have needed to change the X/Y axis of the scren. For some reason its just off with the GTX460.

KFA2, they just rebrand Galaxy or what?
http://www.kfa2.com/gtx460gc1024mbd5.html
http://www.galaxytechus.com/usa/productview.aspx?id=127

Yes. KFA are the rebrand Galaxy name for Europe.

I'm glad I did not take the 460GTX instead of the hd5830 when I look at performance now. Mine wasn't 140, it was 110Euro. + I got a second for free as they send me an open package xD. With two of ther 5830's I got 21000 in F. Vantage. I don't know, but the 460GTX just really sux considering its price, still. So does the hd5850. You can get some cheap ass hd5830 from France though.

Even overclocked heavily, the HD5830 is at best a average performer, its not spectacular, but its not terrible either. Average. Whats more important to note though is how the GTX460 1GB beats or equals the OCd 5830 in most tests. With the current prices of GTX460s being around £135, its very very hard to recommend the 5830 in any capacity.
