Quad 140 Radiator Stand

Hi guys,

I have just designed myself a floor/desktop radiator stand to mount a 140mm rad, in my case its being designed to support the mammoth weight of a quad 140..

Any mfr is going to charge me a fortune to CNC out those feet unless were talking large volume, I was wondering if anybody here can Lathe work alu bar for £££?

Approx Requirements:
Just under 1" dia, approx 15mm thick.
Small counterbore/recess one end for sticky rubber pads.
M5 hole through centre.
Two small flutes around diameter, only for aesthetic purposes!

Full engineering drawing will be given.

I think I am going to widen the base a bit to give more stability, and adjust some panels as they do not blend well together.

If anybody wants one give me a shout as it'll bring costs down with more made in one go!

How about something like these?

I know they are bigger then 1inch in diameter but already made and ready to go.

Also, do you have access to a drill press. I made something like these once on a drill press by putting in the mounting screw and grabbing that with the drill press. Then used a file to cut the grooves. Just don't press to hard as you can knock the chuck out of the drill press.

Hi nlancaster, those are exactly how I have drawn mine! Only problem is they are too big. I have found out my local fab shop has a small lathe so have emailed an eng dwg over to them to see what price they can give me.

I do not have access to machinery, and unfortunately I always manage to mess a job up right at the very end when im working with tools! I can bolt things together no problem so thats what I prefer to do! lol I think patience is my problem, however with CAD I can sit here for hours on end working on various projects..

And with CAD it is impossible to screw up hardware!!

You might be supprised how cheap it will be for such a simple part.

Might i bring up issue of such long and heavy rad mounted vertically will make center of gravity high and easy to tip over by accidental pushing. So it's wise to use fans (and maybe some fangrills aswell) on both sides of rad, to serve as extra protection of rad (i recall reading about easily dealt damage to rad from few falling accidents). And imho reasoning that owner will be careful is not enough. There are always playful children, pets, wife cleaning up place, drunk friends and alike disasters waiting to happen :)

I'm given the go ahead to get 10 made initially. I'll reply here with pictures and details once they are ready to ship.

The centre piece and sides will be made out of 1.6mm m/steel and the bottom plate is 2mm m/steel. The whole thing will be powdercoated and the alu feet will be left with a machined surface finish to N8 / Ra3.2. The frame will be powdercoated and stainless steel fasteners will be supplied. The first 10 will be sold at a loss, but i'd rather get 10 made and find they are wrong than 50!!

Not a bad point. I just noticed the rad weight isn't centered in the middle. Might look into that, bit tippy in one direction?

Ah thats strange, I replied seperately to those posts, I guess I didnt click send!

Fan grill tastes differ between people, I believe the best thing to do is to offer the unit without grills and if the user wish's to use them then they may choose from the many different types available from many retailors. I have made the feet wider to increase the stability of the unit, this of course, becomes less of a worry with 420mm rads etc.

I have offset the rad as this will me to run fans and fan spacers on the side facing us, so once everything is assembled the stand is positioned approximately in the middle of the rad/fan assembly.

I have just received the fabricated parts today, however I am still awaiting on the CNC machined feet. They were shipped at the end of last week I believe so they should be with me anyday now.

The image below shows the steel parts bolted together but without the CNC feet. Some will notice the G-Changer 560 rad in the background, this will be assembled along with rad spacers and 140mm fans once the CNC feet have arrived.

Edit: Just to let you those are not nuts on the back but infact hank bush's which are pressed into the steel, so all thats needed for assemply is an allen key!

Is there any other company thats planing on releasing 560 radiators?

I have only heard of the Black Ice SR1 and the G-Changer, however this will mount any size of 140mm rad, and in the future there willl probably be a 120mm version. This floor stand allows users to buy and use these extreme radiators even if they haven't got mammoth PC cases!

i think it would be cool to build a handle that uses the top fan mounting holes, for easy moving and stylish appearance to match the base

Don't know. In my eyes if i'd ever consider external rad, i'd probably get MoRa3.

I am still waiting on the feet and then I can post pictures of the whole unit assembled with a 560 rad, it looks pretty awesome already with the rad installed!!

I have finally received the CNC machined feet. I have attached some pictures of the unit fully assembled with a 560 radiator!

Mudgey: Next thing you can work on - make this stand easily extendable to something speaker alike .. more fit to bolt on good looking 'box' on top, or since the beginning box-like design (to get as result something like aquaduct, that would look good near Hi-Fi hardware :) )

a rad stand is kinda pointless without a holder for a small PSU.

Sorry to say, but most rad stands are located externally.
Then having tubing + wires come from rads to your case is very ugly.

I would be very nice if you could somehow integrate a holder for a small PSU, to keep near the rads so you can connect the fans to it, instead of having the fans cables to back to your computer.

Or a way to combine all 3 leads into 1 nicely.... you want to minimize whats going in and out of your case.

Other then that its a very nice and simple design.

NaeKuh: extra PSU for fans - price++. Imho single wire for all of fans (or all of them sleeved together) won't be as bad. I recall seeing L-slot bracket with 4-pin molex in it (originally probably for quick test/connecting something like standart harddisks/dvdroms). Imho something like that + quick disconnects might result in nice external radstand. Connect two quick disconnect fittings, push in connector in that bracket and all ready to go :). It would be nice to see integrated rheostat for fans in external rad aswell.

Maybe not an entire PSU, but a single molex connector should suffice. Given the fact that they do 6A on a single channel I believe, you should be able to hook up 8 140mm fans, which is basically a max for a single radiator stand. Adding in a fancontroller would be even more awesome, but definitely add to the price.

Hi Waterlogged, it didnt make economic sense to get one made, whereas getting 10 made each individual part brought the cost down and so I am selling these at cost to me.

It's okay to sell them, however, sales discussions are not allowed outside of the For Sale section. I suggest you start a new thread about selling these there. Post a nice picture, and you'll probably get plenty of potential buyers, it's a great product :).

I don't have a problem with you making more to make it more cost effective for you to get it made. The point I was making was, this forum has rules against selling anything outside the For Sale (FS) section, which you don't have access to yet.

Apologies for that, its hard to keep track of the rules of so many forums! You are more than welcome to delete the thread.

I have since got the parts for the 120mm version from the laser cutters. The stand has also been redesigned so that it can be welded together which will be cheaper than currently folding and inserting hank bush's.

just saw this, i think it's an awesome idea. though i'm surprised that the welding is cheaper for some reason, i guess because it takes out a lot of process steps?also, you gave me an idea for something else with a similar concept that i'm going to have to sketch up now :p:

Thats right, they have to set the bench press up for folding and then for inserting hank bush's, whereas the welding is one process.

I have attached some finished pictures of the 120mm rad. I have to admit the 240mm rad looks lost within the structure of the stand!

Just poped mine togther losely before i do it proper and photos. I made a boo boo and PM'd the man. In tipical fashion i'd done everything Adam had listed in the Pm but wow. These are ammzing.

Smaller formfactor PC say under the TV, stick this to the side or behind the TV/setup

I guess you could even mount a pump on there

Radiator stand came in yesterday. Superb work Mudgey!

I'm very happy with the fit and finish of the stand. Packaging was more than sufficient. All hardware necessary included. Everything went together as it should. Again, very happy with the final result.

I'll post some pictures in my build thread tomorrow.

I had messaged Mudgey a few weeks back about a 120mm stand. He said he is working on a new revision. Hopefully he will have some available shortly.

I only have one 140mm rad stand left and no 120mm versions.

The revised version will fix the compatibility issue with the SR-1 where it will only fit with the barbs facing outwards and not inwards, and the 120mm version will be redesigned with the same construction method as the 140mm version. I will also make a few dual rad units that will hold two rads side by side.

I ordered some replacement centre section plates for the 140 stands that solve the compatibility issue with the SR-1, however I made an error with my scaling and they came out 1.5x the size they should have been!! ops.

The next large laser order should be in a few weeks where I will get the profiles made for the 140's, 120's, duals and for the prototype cube case.

Oooo Adam are you doing a dual for 140's? I'd be tempted to get a 2nd SR-1 560!!!

Would it just be a wider base and center plate you'd change?

I have one of Mudgey's 140mm stands here.
Ordered and then decided I have no use for it.
Box opened but parts not even unwrapped.
It's available and I'm located in NH in the US..

Thats right, the centre plate would be wider, the base would be wider, there would be another side plate and another two aluminium feet in the centre also. Unfortunately there will be a slight gap between the rads as it seems most rads are of varying thicknesses. The central support plates would slot together so the distance between the rads will be kept to a minimum, there would also be a plate that would attach to the top of the rads to keep them parallel to each other, if you wanted I could extend it higher and make it into a handle for carrying?

The plate across the top, would that mount on say the fan holes? If it does i'd make it to mount on all 8 of them, keeping the thing solid and ridged. The Idea of making it into a handel is cool. Shall i order a 2nd SR1-560 and send both of mine to you so you can play with it? Im more than happy too. I really like the idea of the dual. I think this could be idea for a lot of different events and setups. Shall we go to PM?

As you said it, the top plate would mount the top most fan holes (all 4 holes per top fan) and span the width of both rads.

Thanks for the offer, that would really help with measurements however I would only require one SR-1 to measure from! I'll PM you my address.

I like the idea of the Dual. Will that be 120mm or 140mm?

I've been considering how to get dual quad rads into a workable single or double loop and not many if any can accommodate that much radiator.

I'm looking forward to this case you speak of!

why the Rad's inlet and outlet at the bottom ? shouldn't they be up for better flow ?

At last i finaly got it all put togther. It's amazing to look at! Huge huge thanks to Adfam for his skills, product, talks. :yepp:

I need to work out how i'm going to join the fans in the best way, thinking remove the tacho wire, attach the fans the other way around and join the wires behind, cut, melt, solder in, heat shrink. Make it proper and neat.

I hope the rad bleeds okay in this postion, no bleed port on top.

This is the new version of the 140mm stand! The line on the babr fitting on the rad shows issue with the old version. Adam was right on the ball with this!

I've just been toying with mounting a fill port on there, thinking of also putting dual pumps (DDC's) on there and the fans cooling it, 1ft of tubing off the rads then quick links and it being a mobile, portable benching water thing! Also just nice and confind but working out whats the best way is not so easy!

Tygon 3/8'' (yes i boild it and use my bodybuilding lifting power to fit it on)

Small update, i've sorted the fan wiring out and it works, but there piggy backed which i see and now know is a no no so i will have to sort that. I was thinking of fitting 4 more fans but will just go for the higher cfm and stick with 4

Thanks man, i've done it now and done it wrong but it works. I'm going to upgrade the fans anyway to higher CFM for the application im going to use them for. I will pull rpm wsire, just heatshrink each cable in length to the base then join all 4 into 1, or 8 pending if i go push and pull.

Wired the fans, done it wrong. They work but they piggy back of each. I want to go higher CFM so i will just have the wires all the same length, the into one. Just gotta sort what fan i want now! How i did it was to run a blade tip of the iorn on the wire to melt off some insualtion, then tin both wires, hold them close and apply some heat. It workd! Again sorry for pants photos, iphone. DSLR is dead

¿The 140 versión it's 100% compatible with the HW Labs Black Ice SR-1 560 rad?

I see in the photos that the fitting conector touch the estructure.
I've already located on Ebay and I want to buy a unit.

Hey guys, I have discontinued these stands as I was selling them at cost. They were quite expensive to make here in the UK, I had a max price in mind but I could not get the production costs below it whilst having them made within the UK. I have been concentrating on making some PC cases instead and who knows, I may reintroduce a 3rd revision of these stands later down the road!

Nicely done on this piece of hardware. Great design.
