As many of you know, I am NOT a fan of apple and usually have nothing good to say about the company, but after getting a look at the new mac mini, I am impressed, at least with the physical ramifications. I can't see myself making a system this small. I'd consider this an xtremely small yet decently powerful computer. :D

That said, WAY overpriced. :rolleyes:

Edit: Btw, using very old gen hardware (775 socket WHY?!?!) is just plain stupid. i3 or even i5 in something like this for the money.

... I just really like the tiny form factor! :p:

A nice piece of hardware, but in Germany the cheapest version is at 809 Euros :shocked: Not many will be paying that much if you can get an iMac for 1115 Euros...

Desktop power in a nettop size with mac quality and looks.

I like Apple products more all the time.

This thing cost 50% more than an Acer mini desktop

no, we havn't. this is the smallest non-laptop computer we have seen that is made with desktop parts with a built-in power supply. There is no power brick and it's 1.4" thin...

This is why I posted it, it's xtremely small, and fits nicely with our extreme needs!

I hope the cooling is good on this. It's honestly too bad they go for $700.

I'd consider a refurbished one, but wow, new is out of my price range. If I can build one this small, sign me up, otherwise, I might have to bite the bullet down the road.

might aswell get a laptop, free screen for when u dont want to sit at your computer desk.

Notebooks may be thinner, but they are way more broad.

I'd say the new Mac Mini is as small as a computer can be and that makes it impressive for me, notebook components or not. At least until someone crams even more inside the same space or the same in less space :)

im not impressed either, just because they know the dimensions of some parts, and have to adapt the rest to fit does not mean its tough to do so. if you look at motherboards for laptops, they are very small aswell, but just flatter and wider.

the only thing i will give them praise for, is that the PSU is inside the case, not a separate brick that hangs by your feet.

Pretty much, YES.
Because there are dozens of laptops just as impressive, and they don't get as much attention, either because they're laptops or for the fact that they're not made by Apple.
If you know how small the parts are, then you know what I mean..;)
Kudos to Apple for being the first to make it this small, but the same process have engineered lots of laptops, just as impressive and crammed, Apple or not.

Manicdan: As you can see in my link, laptop motherboards doesn't even have to be wider than this Mini.

What I like best is that if you want a dual-link DVI connection (on that shared memory itty bitty piece of video chip), then you pay $99 extra.

And where are i5 or i7 CPUs? My 2006 generation hardware is better than this. And cost about the same back then.

So looks cute at first then you realize what a horrible deal it is. Yup, Apple.

Id rather get a Dell Zino HD.

If this type of statement were true (people will only pay the lowest price for "x" hardware), there would be people who:

A) Bought Acers
B) Bought Apples

Yeah, they have the highest gross margins of any company, but if PC manufacturers would make products that compete in terms of build quality, form factor, materials, looks, battery life etc. there would be a lot less Apple's being sold in general.

I wouldn't say that the battery life of macs is that superior. Probably much better than the average laptop though. PC manufacturers are improving nowadays and i would always pick better hardware over "looks" or whats in fashion.

Is the OS that makes battery life impressive on the macbooks, If i were to run bootcamp xp or win7 on my mac pro, is about the same as any good build laptops. At least that's the case with my mac pro 2009.

That said, the new mini looks very sexy, not that i would pay that much for what's inside.

Yeah, true that. Although generally you still get about 10%-20% more battery capacity because they use the perfectly snug fitted flatpack li-ion batteries.

Nothing against it, build quality is good for macs, but seriously, everytime someone talks about the design, it gets more and more generic. They all look precisely the same. The same single aluminium shell with neat edges, curves in the standard places. It's really getting pretty boring, iphone, ipad etc. Doesn't impress me much anymore. Marketing genius though. I just think they need some new design inspiration though (aesthetically at least), but i guess they use a nice clean formula, anyway, why fix something which isn't broke?

nice shell... why not fill it with some better components for $700?

I remember taking a better look at the macbook battery life and found laptops of similar if not better hardware, with better energy consumption. The business models of both Dell and HP are not bad at all when it comes to build quality but they can be a bit more pricey than the macs but you get pretty good service. In my opinion, the Dell studio XPS 16 was better value for money than its rival macbook pro 15 (i could set it up with a quad core, + SSD + better screen and it would be cheaper than the mac), even though it has a heating issue (the macbook pro 15 does as well from what i remember). You can also look at the non mainstream brands such as Sager, which build quite good gaming laptops from what i know.

Imo, they would have saved power and generated less heat if they went with an i3 + DDR3 design rather than the socket 775 design. Oh apple and your planned obsolescence.

They are just giving more reasons for people to upgrade when they release newer model

trust me; i have both my E6410 (newest dell business offering) and a 13" MB PRO at hand and if you factor in weight; build quality and battery life nothing comes close to a macbook

while the XPS16 is a great notebook its build quality is a complete joke compared to the macbooks; display hinges and display flex are horrible; batterylife completely sucks witht he non-stand out battery; let alone that it's heavier than a 17" MBP

while there are many great non-apple notebooks (my E6410 is one of them) there is a reason why macbooks cost more: they offer more than other notebooks in terms of weight/battery/performance (ALL 3 factors together; sure there are alot of PC notebooks with higher performance; good build quality (still 2 notches below apple) and great displays (dell precision M6700 is one of them) but their weight and battery life are subpar and suck compared to the macbooks; additionally these notebooks are even more expensive than Apple parts

The nvidia gpu is also the chipset. It packs far more of a punch than the pathetic igp in the i3.

This is pretty much a macbook in a desktop chassis without a screen, keyboard and trackpad but with far more connectivity.

Looks fantastic imo, still wouldn't get one. I can't think of a use for it, without a blu ray drive it's perfect use goes out the window. :shrug:

For £650 you can either get a far better pc or something far cheaper if you plan on just browsing the net.

I don't like it:

1. No blu-ray.
2. The design is so good that they decided to put in the back side the card reader and the USBs...
3. In Europe the Apple Store lists it by 799€ ... when, with the actual $-€ exchange, should cost around 650€...
4. I was expecting a DX11 mobile GPU not that obsolete DX10 thing...
5. An obsolete Core 2 having i3 or i5 available.... hmmmm....
6. I like the removal of the bottom to operate inside but... why I have no access to the HDD?

basically for a little bigger case you can get a quad core(or quad thread), with blueray player, and a semi serious gpu, for the same price.

I just like how small it is.

Is there something smaller? I think there's pico itx boards that are smaller, but you can't compare the two. That was my point, there's nothing this powerful that's this small, even if its obsolete.

We all i know its old, its not easy to upgrade, etc etc, but that's not the topic. I just wanted to comment on size, which astounds me. As others have said, get a laptop, um.... that's not the topic. I have a SMALL laptop (not a net top). See my profile, x200. Very small, still takes up more room on my desk than a mini. Even an 8.9" acer netbook does. For desktops, this is as small as you get w/ C2D or better tech. I challenge everyone to find something smaller, not a much thicker Zino (which is interesting in its own right) .

It's easy to get addicted to small cases if you insist on putting it on your desk.
I prefer placing it far away, preferably in another room, but then again I never use discs anyway.

Only thing I dont like is the graphics card. I'm curious what kinda cooling it has.

i wouldnt compare any sub 1000$ notebooks from acer etc to the macbooks. I was planning to buy a SXPS 16 and i looked at loads of reviews and the most common problem was its heating issues (especially with a quad core; and i dont understand why the screen blocks the cooling vents) but i would rather get superior hardware and deal with minor overheating and "inferior" OS. As far as i know the precision laptops are the best ones of dell. I think for the uninformed user, a macbook is a more sensible/attractive option (assuming u have the cash to spend). Personally i want to get as much power as i can afford and i did look at the macbook pro 15 but i was disappointed at how overpriced it was.

ASUS *might* make their motherboards, but making the motherboards is nothing close to actually making Apple's computers. ;)

Anyone know what Nvidia chipset uses the 320M graphics? Now that this thing has HDMI it should be able to do LPCM 7.1 (at least in Windows). If so it would make an excellent HTPC if you can afford the expensive hardware.

So the same factories make Dell, apple, alienware etc laptops but just use different parts?

Btw according to Squaretrade who did a survey with 30 000 laptops, apple was the 4th most reliable. Bit surprising and suspicious actually, since Toshiba and Sony were ranked higher (asus was number 1)

P.S2: according to another survey of 140 000 systems, Apple and toshiba were the most reliable brands, so i guess toshiba is reliable:P

1. Dead format really, we're moving to digital steamed/downloaded media. It would also add to much $$$
2. I'm goona go out on a huge limb and say this was for asthetics. USB who cares :/

4. Yeah, because tesselation would be great on a low range card that can barely push dx9c (48 shader nvidia part)
5. Core2duo have comaprable performance/watt and performance/TDP since the 45nm process is so mature. This allowed lower cost and also allowed the use of an integrated low-power, but high performance/watt graphics chip. Intel HD is about 40% of 320m.
6. I think it's to give the illusion of upgradability... whos goona upgrade it from 2gb->4gb as it's goona cost you about the same and a little hassle.

Reading the title, I was surprized to see it wasnt a thread created by "therightway" or whatever his name is. More surprizing, it came from you!

I suppose for the size, its a fairly well spec'ed machine. Although I still wouldnt couldnt justify the price tag for something so gimmicky...
OTOH: it could make for an expensive, yet convenient HTPC. Perhaps there might be something more to this than just a sheeple lure :clap:

I wonder if it overheats when you make it do something other than look pretty?

It's funny people are :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:ing about hardware, apple was never known for that. I can't stand Apple, I can't stand their business practices. I just like how it's tiny and the fact that I CAN'T build something like this unless I got plexiglass and learn how to build with it on top of getting very custom boards b/c atom or lesser processors do NOT fit my requirements.

That said, Apple can go suck it, but I'd pick up one of these in a year or two if it was $300. I can always buy a dead laptop off ebay and throw the processor in there and upgrade to something better.

Btw, I can't find any good ITX cases besides SG05/06 and I'm still dealing w/ 775/i3/i5/i7 w/ larger power envelopes (which isn't an issue) but forces larger heatsinks and larger cases, Although throwing 5850s in there rocks, but that's not the point either.

I've been looking for fast (2.4ghz is enough for what I need) w/ 10w power envelope at idle. Apple won't get my money, but in the future, someone else might (at a highly discounted price!)

I've totally missed this chip(set), the GeForce 320M. Seems to be really fast. Too bad it's made for 775..

The 'server' model doesn't have an optical drive which is how it can fit two hard drives. The model w/ an optical drive can not fit anything more.

i dont call that well engineered, its not tough to do that kind of math. you know the size of most things, they are standard. the only thing that looks custom is the motherboard, which always is on every laptop ever built, and the power supply, which is pushing out a measly 84W

if that had only an SSD, which was not a typical 2.5", but much smaller, if the ram sticks were standard, if the cdrom drive somehow had other parts merged with it, etc. then it would be well engineered.

i built a PC into a laptop briefcase (13"x16"x4" i think of internal space)
full ATX mobo, duel slot video card, tv tuner card, 500W psu, HDD, and optical, complete with custom cooling. basically everything u see in a mid tower case i had in a briefcase that was 1/3 the volume. took alot of modding to get it all jammed in there, but it wasnt that hard since most of it was just knowing where i CAN fit it, cause i couldnt change its shape

They are designing them though, it doesn't matter who puts the parts together. The better battery life comes through design not by them being put together some special way.

I do think it's funny to compare an atom processor to a C2D. :p:

space isnt that much different between C2D and atom, just power consumption, which leads to a bigger psu, and heatsink, the fact this dosnt run off a battery is probably the only reason they didnt care to use a weak atom. 84W is alot for a laptop, my beastly C2D laptop complete with screen and dedicated graphics uses only a 54W brick. the docking station recommends much higher though, like 95W, due all the powered ports and crap.

IBM's thinkpads definitely surpassed them, and the current Lenovo's that I've seen are still pretty good. My old T60 4 years ago came with a full magnesium chasis and magnesium alloy top, and these things are, unlike the MBs and MBPs, pretty much bulletproof. Everyone who I know with a MB or MBP has had to have had theirs serviced or replaced within 2 years.

I like this mac mini, if anything the design on it is stunning. I'm just left wondering why they integrated the power supply, other than for being able to say "smallest desktop with integrated psu"?

Macs are for girls cause they like small and nice looking things. Custom PC's are for men, cause they like things that are big and powerful.

The problem is that people compare the cheapest Apple product with the cheapest x product, even if the former costs 3 times more.
Apple laptops should be compared to Thinkpads, Elitebooks etc. Not the cheapest Acer or whatever.

Apple fans NEVER look at the price when comparing.

Calling Apple über quality.. I dunno about that. They're about as good as anything in the same price category, but better? No way. Design however is a matter of taste.

Taxes here in France are 19,6%.

Too bad for Apple, priced accordingly to the hardware for a little more than 500€ it would have been the perfect HTPC for me.

I find it funny when people start putting other's down. This is an XTREME forum and it's an extremely small PC. End of story...

I could go off on the fact that I probably can lift heavier weights than anyone on the forum, but it's not MY place to say that nor is it relevant to the interests of people here.

Duniek (I believe that's his name) has made some really small custom acrylic cases for SFF pcs anywhere from mini itx to pico itx. Just because it's not an i7 doesn't mean it's garbage.

Has anyone seen any other ssf rigs like this that aren't ATOM based?

I have to agree with synthetic on his i7 comment. The 320m chipset is about as good as it gets for an integrated graphics controller and allows you to have a decent graphics processor (48 cuda cores instead of 16 like the 9300m) without adding in a third chip. If they had gone the i7 or i5 route it would of required 3 chips (cpu, sb, gpu) and as we can see from the board there is no room for a third. core2duo's are still competitive, but apparently no one likes them anymore.

i completely agree, price is too high for the specs. I'm just saying there is a reasonable answer behind choosing c2d in this particular case, not so much on the price though.

I think so too. Is there any IGP that even comes close to this one? I saw notebookchecks benchmarks, they looked too good to be true.
AMD is the only one who could have matched it IF they'd bothered (NB + SB tho), but they've been lazy with the IGP's.
Not much difference between the graphics in the 2.5 year old 780G and the 880G

I would buy one for my home theater if they put a Blu-Ray drive in there with proper software and bitstream audio out through the HDMI. Also, would be nice to change the HDD to an Intel SSD. Would be a badass home theater kit.

Apple charges like $400 extra to double the RAM. Adding Bluray and an SSD would take it past $2K.

Wouldn't affect Apple's target audience, though. They don't know jack about computers. It's like taking a caveman to a supermarket that charges $4 an apple. When he tastes that apple, he'll think he's in heaven cause he's never tasted anything that good, and the price won't matter.

I think EVERYONE, including myself, agrees that the cost is insanely high for this piece of hardware, and again, not the issue. I wonder how many times I'll have to mention that in this thread before people get it, lol.

But the thing is, there are people out there, prepared to pay a premium for BD and SSD, and Apple doesn't give them that. It would be so such easy money for them and yet they don't do it.
Upgrading those things by yourself won't cost more tho, probably less. But if you're into doing that you won't buy the Mac Mini in the first place... ;)
