Dirt2 PC vs NFS Shift PC, which would last longer on replayability?

I got $25 gift card and I'm on the fence on which of these games should I get.
What I'm going for in asking the same question is: Which of these two have a longer re-playability (meaning which will go old fast or one will last as long as GTR2)

I love Rallying but Dirt2 is not your typical Rally racing & the side talk trash talking is not for me. I love the eyecandy replay but the driving itself is not tight as Richard Burns or Colin McRae 2. But still fun

Drift: I like the eyecandy replay. I love that there is a community that is unselfish on sharing configs/mods/skins for making the experience better.
Driving is tighter, considering it's on asphalt vs gravel on Dirt2

I love both experiences since it gives me escapism from our mundane Midwest driving...plus my Forrester is hardly a racer.

If you have any of this game on PC please chime in your PROs & CONs on each maybe I can get a better educated decision.

I have DiRT 2, and have played it a lot. I also tried Shift but it wouldn't run on my rig without bad lag and eventually I couldn't continue because it started crashing after the start of every race. I have very low spec though. Shift is probably more challenging and realistic car handling than DiRT 2, which is fairly arcade by comparison. DiRT 2 is sort of a love/hate affair for me. It's fun but only the Rally events offer a good challenge. The rest of the disciplines are too easy. It is also shallow in car and track depth, so it has a repetitious feel. The main thing in replayability DiRT 2 offers in sp is working your way up through difficulty levels and going for better times. Online play has been ridiculed for being cheat infested. Tough call really, both are good games, it just comes down to a matter of what type of racing you prefer and how SIM-like you want a racer to be.

Need For Speed has gotten a bit long in the tooth, it started as racing exotic cars around a set track and has done a complete cirlce through street racing back to the track; the formula is getting stale. I would therefore vote Dirt, I find sliding around sandy corners a lot more fun :)

I kinda like both.
I prefer racing games that behave more like real-life, the closer the better, so I'd say NFS Shift.
It's nice, fun and has a decent amount of cars & tracks.
I re-install it every now and then to have some fun with the steering wheel ( all driving assists off of course :D ) [ time trials & drifting race :D ] with friends/cousins/etc.

Dirt was kinda fun too, not even remotely close to real-life driving, seriously lacking in cars & tracks count, but I liked it because of 2 gaming modes, the rally's of course, and the Gate Crasher ( I love drifting like a mad man :D ).

i got board with dirt2 affter a couple of hours, NFS lasted about 8. i found both way to easy and repetitive

yah, and dirt has awesome graphics, but the AI in dirt sucks. multiplayer would be fun but i only played the 360 and the pc demo. on shift the cars are the same just faster so u just have to have faster and faster reactions they dont handle differently or corner differently so once u get past the 3rd set of races (unlocks all tracks and modes) its all the same

I mainly play SP anyways zanzabar, so AI sucking or not, it's the cars that I'm driving and the tracks available are more of a concern for me.

So far NoGrip has an awesome community of modders for Shift, and no real mods for DIRT2 (not that I have come across any :shrug:)

I agree about DiRT 1, it's superior to DiRT 2. Had it not been for the better graphics, optimization and better car handling physics in DiRT 2, DiRT 1 would blow it away entirely. One of the things that's really odd is the Dallenbach Special has been around a long time and raced at Pike's Peak, yet in DiRT 1 where they had the Pike's Peak Hillclimb, there was no Dallenbach. They put it in DiRT 2 but there's no race it fits into well.

Note as well to the OP that though the developer talk and clips make it sound like they focused on getting the car damage realistic in DIRT 2, it's actually much more realistic in DiRT 1 in how it affects the performance AND visually. DiRT 2 has nicer graphics, but you'll see cars barely affected by damage and inappropriate parts of cars showing damage when you hit something. For example I have a video doing the rally in Croatia in the Escort MK II where the left rear quarter panel of my car swiped a rock wall, yet the only damage shown was the hood crumpling a bit.

+1 for GRID, and if you have an X360 you should look at Forza 3 as well :)

Is there ever going to be a GRID 2? I liked GRID a lot, except for the drift. Then again I'm only using KB.

Does Grid or Dirt1 have a modding community even?

number of cars on both games limited.

dirt 2 is much more enjoyable because the control aren't fudge up like shifts.

I'm played online with some people in dirt2 it's funny to see them ahead and the crash LOL

After installing all requirements, I installed patch.
Complaints:
--- game executable stopped working if attempts to skip intro videos (ESC, ENTER, SPACEBAR, ALT, ****, etc)
---it's in Window Mode at start
--- any attempts to change video settings game executable stopped working
--- after entering a profile, game executable stopped working
--- after changing volume game executable stopped working
--- after creating a new profile, game executable stopped working
--- seconds before starting a race, when changing camera view, game executable stopped working
--- Logitech Momo is not recognized, attempts to customize are made, but after saving game executable stopped working

From May 1-3....had not played a game because game keeps crashing


@demonkevy66 or anyone playing DIRT2, maybe you guys can offer some advice on what to do next....if not fix by next week, I'm going to email STEAM and Codemaster for a refund
Original Dirt, downloaded from STEAM also is working fine....already at 2nd Tier...1HR from installing game.

i choose dirt2 because if i want shift style racing game grid is still the best i will get grid but dirt is the best of its style

as stupid as this may sound, the reason I bought a Radeon HD 5850 is to get full DX11 experience.
but, I went into the hardware config and turned DX9 = true to get to the games.

I was able to race, but twice it stopped working for me.

next thing I did was uninstall Rage3D

raced again, but
I constantly had to configure my Logitech Momo, since it would not recognize it.

so off to race...actually makes it thru the entire race

when it was time for replay, it stopped working again.

next thing I going to do is dumb down the resolution to 1024x7xx and turn of V-Sync

dammit....

In steam right click on DirT 2 and select the "verify cached content" or something like that ( it checks the game files for corruption ).

unfortunately I uninstalled the game and going to do some step-by-step installation.
- disabled sound
- defragging now
- will install atidll from Cat 10.1(???) to main directory
- enable DX9


Just weird that I finally got to race last night (prior to uninstalling) and was about to see the replay when it stopped working.:shakes:

I picked Shift PC only because every time I here Travis Pastrana's high pitch, on the edge of puberty voice it makes me want to punch infants. The whole "we're cool because we have no bones left unbroken" gig went out the window with CKY2K ffs lol.

Both are decent, but I'm a sucker for blurring a Zonda R through the 'ring' any day.

I noticed that on the demo, I like how it's implimented, almost
like racing open wheel while racing on The Ring

dirt 2 is a far superior experiance....

...man, I find you a virgin if I can experience it by Friday :(

- turned off anything running in the background (no antivirus, no firewall, no USB attached, no sound)
- defragged C:\ drive (Primary: where my OS is installed)

after reinstalling, I

- made it to where I create a game profile, I used a default name, game crashed

I even tried to crash it by going to fast on my selection and going to Tour and Esc back, just trying to confuse it......then I left it on....before it would get "bored" and hang then crash.....now, after mopping the kitchen, vacuuming the stairs.....it's still running.

LOL, it was probably just updating GfWL. You should ALWAYS make sure you update it for any game you play that uses it, esp if you're having such problems. Funny how they make MS OS updates automatic if you want, but when they literally take over the gaming industry with their crap GfWL format, they leave it up to the customer.

I think that was it. I remember making an offline profile and those seems to have better...or less chance of crashing...all because there was no saving.

I'm loving DIRT2 more and more now that I finally got it working.
I finally stopped forcing DX9 in the hardware config and now running DX11

I played it on PS3 console and watching it 6-8ft away, you miss everything.

I love seeing the little details Codemaster placed in there, the post processings, the little engine/vehicle parts that moves, etc

Shift is unplayable due to the crappy controls and steering lag, even with various mods applied and tested, it still plays terribly :(

Colin McRae Dirt 2 is rubbish too, there is virtually no Rally stages, and the hill climb events are gone too, which is very strange for a game series famed for the excellent Rallying events. Codemasters dropped the ball and Americanised it way too much, the devs admitted as much themselves. So few tracks and zero replayablity. Hell, even the menu system can leave you nauseous, what's wrong with a 2D menu, why do I have to look around a trailer and get a headache? :p:

Hopefully they will fix everything and release a rally game next time with Colin McRae Dirt 3, otherwise they should drop Colin McRae's name from the game title......

On another note, Milan-based Black Bean Games and Milestone developers are working on a WRC game, with luck they will nail it, as there hasn't been a quality PC rally game for 5+ years, aside from the fun, but arcadey Colin McRae Dirt :D

There are alot of NFS SHIFT mods, to modify/extend/make the career mode more realistic. And there are handling mods as well. If you install all the mods, nfs shift will last longer. I like both. I play both, although i took a break, but find myself coming back to DIRT 2 even though nfs shift is also installed.

I went and re-installed Dirt, starting from scratch again, this time at 1920x1200 all maxed out, still looks good and is fun too, plus surprisingly for a rally game, there are plenty of rally stages, which is nice :)

The problem is that Dirt 2 should be a rally game though, as it is part of a long and successful rally game series :p:

However, it's just a totally arcadey track based game, as JamesBong420 said, a sham. I just hope the devs realise the multiple mistakes they made for next time round. Dirt 1 with Dirt 2 or better visuals would be sweet after all ;)

I agree, but I'm not really upset that they added in off road racing to the first DiRT, because it was done well there. Nice long RAID tracks, challenging buggy races, and good hill climbs. You had more realistic damage too and had to be careful how you set the cars up.

I wouldn't mind if they even added some motocross and supercross tracks to DiRT 3, or maybe just make a separate game in conjunction with DiRT 3 called DiRT BiKE or something.

In DiRT titles though, since Colin's name is still associated with them, rally should be a good percentage of the game, at least 40% maybe. They could have easily made rally 40% of DiRT 2 had they not wasted a LOT of racing on reusing Landrush tracks for Domination and Last Man Standing. My God some of the venues it seems you're at the Landrush track 60% of the time because of that alone.

I wonder how many RBR amateur/rookie racers are happy that DIRT 1 or 2 is not...hmm...tedious/difficult??? need a Thesaurus ATM to find the word I'm looking for. :shrug:

after trying out UTAH in Dirt2, I immediately wished, RBR's Australian or what's the USA desert track again??? was that beautiful

I don't think DIRT2 have that....I was at Fry's trying out a DIRT2 set up they had, and when I did the flick, people were WTF was that:eek:?....then again, it was a staff and a bunch of 12 y/o :rolleyes:

I'm playing serious and I can get at least 3-6 secs ahead on most small events but world tours seems cheat against me :/

I had to literally ram them off the road to slow them down :( (Kate Justice and Dave Mirria)

I'm not a big fan of the rally cross and the complaining driver that cuts me off when I go on the out side to inside of a turn >_>

also happen in baja too the lose control and you ram in them cause you have two people on your other side and they're complaining it's annoying as hell.

anyone noticed the hacked world records in L.A 20 sec lap lol ? someone needs to delete those.

I might try shift again with my Agiea PPU I have. For the record I got threw most of shift on the keyboard but now have a 360 controller which I've been using for dirt 2.

I can tell you exactly what dlls and driver # you need for the ppu.:up:

Yeah, the flick is cool in RBR. I had to uninstall the game though because I was getting lots of CtDs and I couldn't even save after races. I don't know if it was a bug in the stock game, my spec, or the 2009 RSRBR mod I installed, but I decided to wait until I build a new PC and get a wheel. It was a bit too hard on KB anyway.

I never have trouble with the multi vehicle races in DiRT 2. They're a bit more challenging if you force yourself to race them clean on Hardcore, but still easily winnable. Besides playing with settings to force more challenge (max light, soft, high & strong on downforce, suspension, height & differential), I've been letting the AI get a head start on Throwdowns in Landrush and Rallycross. It's ridiculous on some tracks. Even on Hardcore you can give them as much as 6 sec and still win.

I don't mind the other events, if they had added them in conjunction with a large, multiple track rally section within the game, that would be fine, but they added them instead of the rally events! Rally events make up well under 20% of the games content, a complete reversal of content when compared to the previous game.....

In Dirt 1 you can do really well and get really far within the game by just doing the Rally stages, you can still unlock enough events to continue right to the end :)

I tried Shift with a 360 controller, the lag and playability was horrendous, that is one game that will never be re-installed, what a waste....

What are your specs ,game plays very nice to me using I'm using a MOMO Racing Force steering wheel.:shrug:

I just recently re-installed Win7, still the same results. The controller/gamepad gameplay is poor and the car handling is terrible. Tried a 360 controller, and a PS3 clone, with the same results, analogue or D-Pad....

Maybe it was designed for using a wheel, but I don't want one of those, I am old school, and like to play racing games with a D-Pad, this is the only game where that is simply not possible.....

LOL, I'm playing DiRT 2 with a lousy P4, X1950Pro, 2GB RAM rig on AGP platform with XP. I use lowest settings except I have Particles at Low vs Off so I can see the dirt/water spray and Water to Med vs Low so it has at least some reflections and ripples. I'm amazed at how good it looks even at settings that low, esp since my CPU is below min reqs. It speaks well to the optimization they put into the game. I know CPU is relegated to non graphics stuff, but it can be hard on your GPU when your CPU struggles. The only place the slight lag affects my results is in Rally. I average mid 30s in FPS on rallies, and you need to get 40 or more to not affect your car speed, which can be a bit slower even when the lag is slight. Still managing to beat it on Hardcore though.

:confused: when I slid in game I get passed on the out side. even when I go out to in and out again :wth:

I can not slid and win a race at all :/ this annoying me now. I'm almost done with this game now but I still hate rally cross >_<

Which rallycross track are you having that problem with and what cars are you using? The right cars for the right tracks helps, also setting them up right and knowing on which tracks sliding helps, and also what tracks need good braking and line vs sliding. Typically sliding too much can hurt you in rally of any kind, with the exception of a quick, well aligned powersldie vs drift.

Make a brief vid if you can, even if with the free Fraps demo that allows 30 second recordings, and I'll be able to see better how you can improve. You can also pause game, stop Fraps, start Fraps, restart the replay to edit together fairly seamless videos of 30 sec segments. Thats' what Cpl Ledanek's been doing, and I used to do it too, until I bought Fraps. It's not just for the hobby of sharing vids, it's a great visual training tool too.

Set sensitivity high as you can control it,this is like increasing dpi on a mouse,and set steering dead zone to 0% acceleration and brakes to low values as well.

I'm trying to narrow down the tweaking on my aging MOMO to get the driving experience better.

It's definitely not Richard Burns Rally. No Scandinavian-flick here. Sliding and drifting does add to the excitement.
The closest you can get to a Sim experience with DIRT2 is driving-inside-view, going over water, and having only 1 second-reaction when the wiper reveals a tight turn ahead of you.:eek:

Thanks for the tip, but I have tried everything, it still handles like crap! The steering lag is intentional , the game is designed to play that way for some reason only the dev's will know :rolleyes:

Just to throw a curve ball, I know some who plays this game on joystick, then again, he's a helo pilot...it's a Saitek joystick

I like Dirt2 much more but i liked Shift also but could never ever get rid of its stutters on curves...i saw this problem on lots of ppl but seems they never found the issue

I get huge studder in GTA:iv with out 4gbs of ram like frames will drop to 8fps then back up to 23 or 35 or 45 and I'm running a 5870 :/ 1gb.
(other stick is another computer right now.)
from you sig it looks you have nvida gpu's check if physx is enable when playing I know suppose to cpu for shift but an updated driver might be putting on the gpu instead.

yes fraps dont go low at all i have all maxed out, and if i go to low low settings happens the same...google the probelm you will find a zillion users with this same problem, its the only one thing i could never get rid of :(

hhmm I played shift with crossfire 3870 before.
haven't played it on my 5870, I'm going to have to test now.
the only I noticed was if I turned off blur my Fps went from 75fps to 26fps.

i love the game but i play it certain tracks inside car its the only way...and its not fps is stutter and not from the GTX285 y play all games on maxed out settings and my card is under water voltmoded...its some issue on the game + hardware he likes

11 drivers + fresh install + XP32 + W764 + my 2 mobo DDR2 and DDR3, 2 different water coolers + 2 PSU + 2 chips only thing is that the game does not like my VGA....

let hope it works my friend i will give a try when i get home, NFS shift is the only software that beated me on my 15 years of Software and Hardware support lol...and you know how gamming forums are try this try that and you end on friesh installl...but only common factor is my VGA...and even not OC at stock does the same.

Did it and same thing...Tokyo circuit its a hell of sutter and FPS are fixed on 61 !!! i have vsync on....other circuits are more playable but really this kills me. Other thing why i dont see the subaru ?

What's ironic there is that in some ways DiRT 2 is garbage compared to what it could have been, but still very fun to play. The ideal DiRT game would have been a good blend of D1 & D2, but they went overboard with the dumbed down damage, minimal tuning options, inept AI, use of Flashbacks, and scant car & track variety.

Dirt 2 sucks, its not really rally anymore. American pick-ups which are faster than optimized rally cars :S

Dirt 2 is awesome, it has kept me sucked in for probably 50 hours and I am still not halfway done with the single player races, its that good. It looks incredible and runs decent even on my Pentium D 820 / 7950GX2 PC with 2GB of RAM. :)

What I find odd is tons of people buy DiRT 2 then say, "What, this is mostly off road racing not rally"! People, get a clue and actually learn about the game you're buying before you plunk down your money. That being said, it would have been much better had they at least made DiRT 2 a mix of DiRT 1 with more cars, tracks and rally, but hey, you all had plenty opportunity to find out about it's content before purchase, so please, stop with the incessant whining already. :rolleyes:

I got my copy of Dirt 2 free with my HD5870, so I can moan about it however I please! :)

Although I never understand peeps that complain about others expressing their disappointment with a game or similar? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, why moan if they share it? :p:

The game is also titled Colin McRae: Dirt 2 in Europe, so when it holds his name (World famous Rally driver, RIP) and considering the previous four rally games that preceded it, it was not a stretch on behalf of any buyers to expect a rally game really, was it? :D

I think I explained my sentiment perfectly well. It's not so much they complain, heck I get that the rally is practically disappearing and I DID say I thought it would have been better with more rally like DiRT 1 had. What I don't get is that people act surprised AFTER getting it that there's not much rally in it. This makes it rather clear many are not reading up on games they get. And I don't really care if it's one included with a video card or whatever. If you pay good money for a GPU, you at least want the game that comes with it to be to your liking right?

As for the whole Colin McRae name thing, give me a break already. Look, I play DiRT 2 a LOT, and on the official forum for the game we constantly get people waxing on about this same stuff. DiRT 1 was signed off BY Colin McRae, it doesn't just carry his name. DiRT 2 was signed off BY his wife to have his name kept on it. Colin himself near the end of his career DID participate in race events that weren't typical WRC racing, like the X Games for instance.

You're confusing freedom of choice/speech with buying sense, they're not the same. Yes, by all means get whatever game you like by whatever means and critique it as you see fit, but when someone goes on about a game like they're too helpless to do a couple minutes of reading about it before they get it and act all hurt about the shock they got, you're damn right I'm going to have something to say about it.

There's a difference between critiquing something you knew the content of before buying, and pissing and moaning as if the jar of peanut butter you bought at the grocery store was fraudulently advertised because you didn't notice it was the type with jelly swirled in. The very heart of gaming is suffering from poor quality product over the hype of preoders from the very type of people that can't for the life of them READ about what they buy instead of getting their games on impulse decisions.

I like off-road racing. I like rally more than x-games style... I wish you could do custom races so you could be running any vehicles on any track.

I still don't think that expecting the 5th game in a long running and renown rally series to have some form of rally content is unusual, far from it. In fact the lack of rally content would have only come fully into the light after some weeks of play and completion, lot's of people won't hold off that long to buy a long awaited and hotly anticipated game.....

They would have heard their friends say how good it was (I thought it was good at first) and bought it, only to latter realise all the rally content was missing :p:

just tossing this experience. I OC'd my CPU to 3.6 for ARMA2. After playing I switched to DIRT2.
Stuttered like a 12y/o caught by Mom with a :banana::banana::banana::banana: mag.

I defaulted my CPU...I don't know where I got the idea....but stuttering disappeared. Game plays smooth as a virgin butt.
