Gigabyte UD7 / 800D

Well I started my first computer build the other day and thought I would share it with yall. Only things I know are the things I have read over the past 2-3 months and figured it would be worth giving it a shot.

I dont really do any gaming or intense applications on it, really only use it for music, movies, and browsing so originally I was gonna go with just air cooling.

I go to looking around on here and found myself spending a couple hours going through every page of the liquid cooling gallery and was blown away on how cool this really was.

Now the build that i'm doing consists of these parts:

Hardware:

Gigabyte X58A-UD7
Intel i7 930 2.8ghz
VisionTek 5870
6gb Patriot Viper Triple Chanel Memory
Mushkin Enhanced 64gb SSD
Ultra 1200w PSU
LG Blu-Ray burner
NZXT fan controler

Water Cooling:

EK Gigabyte UD7 main board water block(s)
EK 5870 waterblock
EK Supreme HF
EK 250 Reservoir
Black Ice 360 Rad
OCZ Hydro Pulse 500
Bitspower Fittings
Primoflex 3/8" id 5/8" od tubing

I havnt been able to find a post of anyone currently using the main board block from EK on the UD7 so was a little weary about goin with it. After looking at it the fittings were super close to one another so thats why I went with a thicker tubing. Im not sure if 3/4" od compression fittings would fit on the NB SB block to be completely honest.

The thing is, that I did run into one problem that im surprised EK let get by. On the mosfets block where it transitions down to vertical it covers the bottom right corner of the 8 pin power connector. There is no way to get the 8 pin seated right without sanding the corner off of the plastic piece. It kinda irritates me a little the thing cost what it did to have somewhat of a serious problem such as this. It kinda seams that EK block tend to have design flaws, not just on this one but on others as well.

I have yet to add liquid to it due to some setbacks but will be sure to post when its filled.

Let me know what yall think for being my first build along with being water cooled.

Continuing on from case gallery thread. What dust filters you use on fans, and how well NB fans work with them restricting airflow and how well on rads? I've heard that they are better working unrestricted, and scythe Gentle Typhoons better with restriction with their bigger static pressure?
Seeing pics imho smaller res would fit better, as current might limit adding more sli/cf gpu-s in top slots, especially very long gpu-s, like 5970s.
Also, what do you think of doing something with tubing .. like accurate 'strightening out', bending a bit here-and-there .. as in my idea being for tubing to look more vertical/horizontal/45degrees skewed, to improve cleanliness/tidyness of tubing looks instead of current a bit irregular mess? I wonder also if some rerouting can be done to make tubing shorter. Taking out half of that tubing long pieces going all across the case might improve looks aswell. But i'd have to sit for long time thinking out tubing routing variants to suggest something deffinite. Eg. in something more circle-ish - from pump to gpu from below, not across all motherboard to cpu waterblock, and to res from any closest waterblock nozzle instead of from rad all across the motherboard again .. afterall, it doesn't make any difference temp-wise how you place component order in loop, just put res before pump and try to avoid too tight bends && 90deg fittings ..
What top do you use with your pump (and what pump?)? I cannot see in current pics. If it's some top which has multilink for integrating your multioption res, maybe it's worth to bring it beneath res? Or put it in middle compartment anyway on it's floor or in 5.25 bay area to get rid of those two long tubes across case to pump in bottom area.

As of now there is no dust filters on the NB fans. I got the low noise ones so the max rpm is 800 rpm on the 120mm and 900 rpm on the 140mm. As for how they do on the rad , they do pretty well. I havnt done any overclocking so temps havnt got high yet really.

As for a smaller res, I dont really plan on adding another video card any time soon. I dont do any gaming or graphic intense programs so I really dont have any need as of now.

The pump that I am using is the OCZ Hydro Pulse 500. I like the look of the tubes going through the zone plate at the bottom.

I havnt seen a water cooled computer in person until I built this one so it was hard for me to picture the actual size of all the objects. Wen I got the case I was shocked at how large it actually was. I havnt been able to find the UD7 with the EK waterblocks on it so it was hard for me to come up with a solution to the tubing due to the fittings being so close. I am happy with it how the tubing is run right now but I do agree that a couple of the runs are too long.

Oh, my mistake. It "seemed" to me that there are some synthetic white filter behind case hexogrills behind fans .. but now on second look it's probably white wall shining through :)

I try to keep up on all the new builds. Sorry for not catching it sooner. VERY well done!

Every time I see a UD7 or EXTREME I regret switching to the Classified, but each had their pros and cons. You did everything how I could have ever dreamed to do it. :up:

The tubing is crazy! I love all the crisscrossed curves and bends.

Doing great for your first time ( and great even if it wasn't your first time). Things have been a bit slow the last week or two, so don't take that as people not being interested in your build.

Will have a closer look tomorrow - seems like there should be some way to optimize the tubing runs.

very nice build i like the parts choice, well except the patriot ram. my kit from them was the worst ram i have ever owned :(

as shazza said there must be a way to shorten up the tubing, it looks a bit cluttered right now

Quick question, what is the down side to long tubing runs other than more stress on your pump? Now I may be crazy so dont laugh when your read this :) but I was thinking that maybe with having some longer runs, the tubes would absorb some of the heat from the water?

It's not "stress on pump", it's simply a bit more restriction in loop = a bit lower flow. Not by much though. But i beleave most (including me) suggested optimising a bit tubing mostly for aesthetical reasons for cleaner/neater looks :)
As for absorbing heat .. what absorbing? Synthetic materials such as in tubing are rather good heat insulator. More overall liquid in loop? If liquid volume is not increased hundredfold then also no much change in 'inertia' untill all water heats up and sys reaches heat load/temps equilibrium.

Well took all of your advice and cleaned up the tubing a bit. Let me know what you think about this arrangement.

Now it looks much tidyer&cleaner / less crowded. Out of curiosity, did it affect flow/temps aswell or you didn't measured them before/after or ambient temps weren't same?

I didnt really check any of the temps to except for the cpu on Real Temp which is on average 1-2°c lower now than with the old arrangment.

Good. Better looks and better temps as extra. 1-2°c is a lot in liquid cooling world, especially if they come "for free" by just rerouting existing stuff. :)

Ya, do agree. Learning a lot of stuff on this build here. Just gotta learn how to do some overclocking and get to put the loop to use.

Looks 10x better now, great job man! been contemplating a similar rig but with a UD5 and in my ATCS-840 or ABS Black pearl.

looks better but is that the best people can do with.. looks like it goes GPU->Pump->Res. isnt that not so great for the pump? i know ddc run better after res.? unsure about those models.. i also realize that the case has some restrictions :shrug:

Very nice! Almost exactly what I want to do myself. I'm glad to see someone with some loops set up so that I can get an idea of what it might look like inside the case with the tubing routes.

I decided to put it there mainly for looks. It opens up the board alot and also you can see the whole NB SB block. Another reason is that I used
3/8 id, 5/8 od tubing which is pretty stiff so the tube going from the video card to the mosfet block would be putting a lot of down pressure on the card bending and flexing it.

The loop this time goes res>pump>gpu>mosfets>rad>cpu>NB SB>res. I havent seen any build with these blocks used so it took a long time to figure out this new setup. As for the case giving some restrictions, are you talking about the tube coming up to the video card?


I am thinking about rotating the cpu block where the fittings are horizontal instead of vertical so the bend going from cpu to NB SB block will have lest restriction. I am worried that it gets too flat especially when temps go up and warm up the tube. What do you all think?

Your build is almost identical to one that I'm planning on purchasing in 2 days time (i7 930, UD7, 6GB Patriot Viper, and 800D - even the NZXT fan controller!!!). I hope you don't mind if I shamelessly plagerize your setup when I get around to doing my watercooling!! (sometime in the future) :)

One question: Hows the Patriot Viper memory doing with the UD7? I couldn't find the exact model no. listed under the compatible memory list, but I assume you're running ok? Any progress with overclocking yet?

The Patriot memory is running fine with the UD7 board. Havnt had any issues thus far. As for overclocking, still havnt got around to it. Been working and wore out but using the Easy Tune program from Gigabyte, everything overclocks easily with no problems.
