Viewed as a design, the also-DX11-compliant GF100 (Fermi) is much more than a renderer of pretty pixels. At its highest level, the 3bn-transistor chip uses four generally self-contained mini-GPUs that combine to provide decent theoretical performance for a wide variety of applications and code.

Fermi indicates NVIDIA's GPU direction by paying particular focus on increased geometry and tessellation via numerous GPU-distributed engines, to GPGPU usage through significant on-die cache, along with pretty-looking pixels via efficient antialiasing performance. The design is well-balanced for the most part, providing robust features for both upcoming Tesla and incumbent GeForce lines.

NVIDIA's mindset regarding Fermi's all-new architecture has been one obvious cause of delays, but physically implementing a new thinking on a GPU whilst also being competitive against the AMD's arsenal of quality 5-series cards has been another stumbling block.

The GeForce brand needs to take the forward-looking Fermi design and bring it to market with economic and manufacturing realities fully taken into account. GeForce GTX 480 represents the desktop manifestation of the inevitable compromise between idealism and pragmatism.

The GeForce GTX 480 chip can't be manufactured in any real volume with the full 512 cores intact, meaning that it loses a stream-processing unit composed of 32 cores. Ramping up clocks on a 3bn-transistor GPU manufactured on a 40nm process is also difficult without running into fundamental thermal concerns, hence why GTX 480 isn't clocked especially high, and the card chews through watts with gay abandon.

Conjecturing somewhat, GeForce GTX 480 is probably 75 per cent of the high-end GPU that was imagined by NVIDIA early last year. Our numbers show that NVIDIA's finest single-GPU card is, on average, around 20 per cent faster than AMD's Radeon HD 5870 1,024MB at a 2,560x1,600 resolution. GeForce GTX 480 is due to cost some 40 per cent more, so whilst the trade-off between extra expense and performance isn't ideal, it's not shockingly bad, either.

How does it play out for the gamer right now? Radeon HD 5970 remains the world's fastest graphics card, GeForce GTX 480 becomes the world's fastest single-GPU card, and Radeon HD 5870 is still a good bet at sub-£300.

Bottom line: NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 480 could have easily been better, perhaps should have been considering the time of arrival, but we feel that, underscored and handicapped by a paradigm shift in GPU thinking, it retains enough features and visceral ooh la la to be worthy of a £400 price-tag, if not £450.

Wow, you posted in the main large thread, and these benchmarks are everywhere in the main thread - what was the point of this thread?

Performance seems OK, power consumption is beastly, more than 5970 at load?

I always thought Fermi would be exactly like the 2900XTX. I wasnt right, but it is somewhat like that launch. Hopefully these will be priced low enough that they will be able to compete with ATI's top cards.

Nah, GTX480 and GTX470 will sell like hot cakes. why is it so much fail? Its performance is in line with its price IMHO. Power and temperature is bad but that's not the only thing that declares a card a winner or a loser. if it was we would all be happy with our 5770's right now

You could buy 2 Asus/MSI x 5850's clock them passed 5870 speeds for around the same price as the GTX480 & blow the performance out the water judging from these benchmarks.

The absolute bargain though is 1 x 5850 overclocked passed 5870 speeds for £220 ;)

Even if drivers give it a 25% boost, it still won't account for the expected 40% price difference...

The only word suiting gtx480 is "underwhelming".

At least EVGA is gonna be makin videocards again...

Cant get over the power consumption and heat :eek: This card should have only been offered with a water block.

no it does mean it beats the 5870 just that the cost is more, would you say that a prius is better than a 911 gt2 just because its performance to price ratio is better?

when you go nearer to the high end, each dollar you pay brings less. this is so in nearly every aspect of not only videocards but pretty much with everything you can buy.

HD5970's price is %75 higher than 5870 but only brings %40ish average performance.

All of this being said, why so few games? Was this indeed the complete list of games for the review?

92C at what fan RPM? Noise?
Overclocking...really none?
What CPU?

With the power consumption and thermals of this card, I wouldn't wanna buy one of these with the plan of running it for a few years.

PS. If you read that review with you nVidia glasses on, Hexus have done the best they can for it's launch. If you read that review with any sense of realism, they've been paid through the nose to run tests a specific way and report only the things nVidia are happy for them to report. Pretty sad really - I'll wait for Anand or someone else I trust to say it like it is to get a hold of one before really making my mind up.

At best what happens when you see negative scaling? Drivers need to be spot on for crossfire to work as intended and mods don't seem to help matters.

After all that Nvidia has failed, I mean look at the damn power consumption. If the thing performed as it did and ate as much as a HD5870, and was priced as a 5870 then it would be okay. I don't want a goddamn Delta banshee screaming in my case anyhoo. My 285's fan is already obnoxious at +85%.

Gonna need some miracles in drivers, atleast nvidia has been known for that.

GTX480 pulls as much as two 5870s, but when we compare performance 5970 is better. ATI's architecture is simply more efficient.

Drivers are beta or very immature. You must compare those results very carefully.

i haven't been following the fermi rumors too much since neither the gtx4xx or hd5000 series will be a worthwhile step up from my gtx260, but if this is true and this trend continues, I may be buying an ati card again. That hasn't happened since my 1900xtx. :D

LOL...twice a year. I have to clean mine out every month. Two dogs and a cat will literally leave a fur ball in my case if I don't clean it out.

I am sure they will gain more performance with newer drivers,but
power consumption at full load can not be fixed with software,undervolting/clocking aside.

Would be nice to still see the Folding at home (PPD) numbers.

LOL, yeah only twice a year and I live in West Texas, its like a dust storm here today and we use swamp coolers(evap.). My cases are all kept off the floor though, that makes a HUGE difference.

If you buy a 5970, you could also buy a fermi instead.

If you buy a fermi, it uses more power than the 5970.

Fermi hits 93c load with NVIDIA's special gargantuan cooler and air vented/cut PCB at stock. Isn't there also a 1.Xa Delta Fan in that equation?
My 100+ CFM 120'mm's don't use that much and I have a 3500 RPM AVC 70mm here from an AMD box cooler rated for .7v.


Within two years, the price difference between the 480 and the 5970 are almost repaid on your electricity bill?

I hate Jen-Hsun Huang, he's a complete deuche for all the renaming schemes and his dirty marketing. He completely deserves this, I hope they fall into the state that Intel put AMD in, so that they're still on the market to keep competition, but are forced to suffer

Keep in mind that a Joule is a very small amount of energy, which is why energy is often recorded in terms of KiloWatt-hours (which is essentially 1000x3600 Joules). I've had only Nvidia since the 6800 but I'm really glad I bought my 5870 back in December for $300. This looks awful. Barely faster than $5870, $500, and 100+ watts more?

I don't know why people are complaining about the temperatures. I remember the X800 or X1800 series (don't remember which) that would go over 100 degrees C in some cases and people still loved them. I'm not going to argue about the power consumption though lol.

Im gonna bet the temp will go down quite a bit once you yank the cooler, replace thier goop and use AS5 or eq and remount.

My 8800GT dropped 10C just by doing the thermal goop correctly.

450 euro = $600 USD (I doubt it sells for that cheap)
Current 5970 prices of ~$700 USD

Fermi's better be cheaper than RV870 is these numbers are "credible." Judging from the heat output and the power load, it seems like it's not impressive at all.

I've also seen a review on TPU, the numbers are more impressive than the one given by Hexus. Can't wait for the "real" reviews.

Prices are high due to demand, ATI shouldn't worry about dropping prices, but meeting demand.

I can't wait to pick up a 5850 2GB $200AR

Hexus used an average price, taking into account many e-shops in the United Kingdom. £440 for a GTX480 is below the average, taking Scan as a source, minimum £428 ~ £504 maximum, average would be around £460. The price seems ridiculous, kind normal when products launch, demand is higher and so the prices.

That's pricely what I was saying. As I pointed out before, 16 Joules per second is a minuscule amount of power. Unless if electricity is extremely expensive where you live, I doubt that would amount to $100 difference, even over the course of 2 years. Most likely you're looking at the difference of pennies each day you game a few hours.

True, but they have already stated they are not that smart. Its likely they are raising the prices, which will give the 480 a firm grip on purpose.

when fermi launches, ATi's supply issues will largely be over. Their demand will be halved.

Sorry, forget what I said, I quickly deleted that part of my post once I realized you had just misread it. Sometimes I over analyze posts, and also usually people don't look at the username or posts anyways before replying and it appears that you would have expected that due to how you say you have contributed alot to this forum and have a lot of posts. Anyways, I was surprised that you had actually caught that and made a post out of it, it got me a bit frustrated because I wasn't really serious about it anyways :shrug:

Anand had some 4870x2 numbers (iirc, read a few..). Looks 4870x2 pulls ahead of the 5870 now a bit with newer drivers more often than it used to. Could just be the review(s) too though.

Either way, 4870x2, 5870, gtx480 all hit in the same area until memory or shader constraints..

funny, i havent came across any reviews ... with the ECC RAM mentioned ....

ECC supposed to be one of the selling points .... anyone got review links which mentioned ECC?

man, i was expecting 480 to topple 5970 ... but instead .... whatever

Any thoughts to whether these benchmarks are forced DX10 for comparison?
