Please sound off on what you think about the board - I will be updating this thread in a little while with BIOS links/ info / and tips as well as some pics
This thread will be monitored and info gathered for feedback to MSI as we will keep track of any found issues and I will work to get them resolved :up:
i think d board is awesome but lack of core unlocking feature is a letdown. :(
it was one of my choices before i got my 890GX but after reading the reviews I had second thoughts, i hope guys here could change that so that it could be tag as an extreme mobo :D

I thought these new boards needed some sort of chip to unlock things, or is that just an Asus/Asrock gimmick.

Since MSI is watching this thread do you/they have a list of Thuban supported MSI motherboards for non 890 chipsets? This will in large part determine what I do video card wise and sorry in advance if I'm thread crapping. :(

Ok, I didn’t forget about this thread, I just couldn’t get back to testing the 555 until late yesterday. Well it was an B55 X4 when I shut the system down the other day after the first unlock.
Yesterday when I started the system, bios again detected the CPU as a 555 X2 rather than a B55 X4 but the bios setting was still set to unlock. I cleared the cmos with the jumper then set to unlock in the bios and after a couple of resets it again unlocked the 555 to a B55 X4. The problem I’m running into is any time a make a change in the bios HT, multi, voltage, NB and others after the reboot the CPU is always back to a 555 X2.:confused:
I’m going to try a few other things in a bit to try and pin down where the problem is but for now default settings in the bios is the only way I can test the 555 unlocked to B55 X4. BTW this 555 unlocks and over clocks on all four cores installed in an Asus Crosshair III.
Do you have any suggestions TheGoat Eater.:shrug:
I have been testing this bios for the past few days as I am tinkering with it more and more - I have found issues as I know my chip unlocks on my 790GX-G65 and its throwing a fit in the 890GXM-G65 as I can get it to show that its a B55 but it always goes into recovery mode then and when I try to proceed it restarts - I am testing more later today and hope to find a work around, though I haven't tested this chip too much so possibly could really be a weak chip - IDK -
When I fired it up today it started as a B55 x4 so I started testing and working my way through the multi up to x22. The I backed the multi off to 21 and increased the HT to 220 and everything ran ok. Then I bumpe the NB up to 3080 and even in Vista everything ran fine. So I tried the 1:4 memory divider again everything was fine so I tightened the timings to 6-6-6 and booted into Windows Vista 32-bit and tried some short tests, again it ran ok with no crashes.:)
I was testing with the GFX card installed in slot #2 so I shut it down and installed the other 4870X2 into slot #1 for quadfire then booted up. You guessed it the system booted as a 555 x2. I tried several times and in the end removed the GFX card I had just installed but it still booted as a 555 X2. :shrug:

I did manage to get the MB to boot on four cores with both 4870x2’s installed. I tried several different things but in the end this is what worked (at least this time). I removed the GFX cards then booted with the monitor attached to the IGP. I enabled the core unlock feature in the bios and then rebooted several times. After three or more reboots the system detected a different CPU installed (B55). I then shutdown, installed the two GFX cards. When I restarted the system the CPU was still detected as a B55 so I activated my known good overclock profile in the bios. It stuck during the reboot as B55 OC’ed to 4.62GHz running 2X4870X2’s in quadfire.
I ran a few 3D tests, 3DMark05 completed. 3DMark06 and 03 did stop then drop back to the desktop so I rebooted to make adjustments in the bios. After reboot the system identified the CPU as a 555 x2.
I tried a few of my saved bios profiles but the system always booted as a 555 x2. At this time I stopped the testing for the day.

@ToT - thanks for the heads up. I may just pick it up for a customer build but test out a 555 just for fun. Hopefully the get a bios out to fix the bugs for those who have the quad 555s :yepp:
I was finally able to get it to unlock with a lot of tinkering and slapping a Mugen II on the 555 - though definitely odd I literally had tinker enough to get it to unlock and then tweak from there. I hope next version of the bios will have some things ironed out... I was able to get a few sets of benches at different speeds as a B55 though weirdly enough it won't boot into my everyday OS drive with 7 Ultimate 64-bit, only my SSD with a normal 7 Premium 32-bit loaded on it... It will freeze every time at the load graphic.
I also hope the next bios has the problems with the unlock feature ironed out. The 1:4 memory divider is better with the 1.2 bios version so that and the unlock feature (unstable as it is) indicates that people are trying to make improvements on this product.
I just noticed this thread is approaching 1200 views. People must be somewhat interested in this MB and I think at least some are curious not only about the overclock ability and durability but also it’s core-unlocking ability. JMHO
This 555/B55 to date hasn’t had any trouble booting into Vista 32 or Windows 7 64. Once I get it to unlock to quad at the bios clock settings I want to use it boots into the OS ok. I can reboot and it stays unlocked as a quad but if I enter the bios and make any changes during next reboot many times it reverts back to an X2. When benching (unlocked to x4 B55, over clocked) if the system crashes then during reboot the system usually boots as an X2. Cold boot is always X2 though the bios is set to unlock?
I’m thinking about pulling the 555 and installing the 965 and testing the 1:4 memory divider at higher MHz plus maybe HTT clocking using the 1.2 bios.

I plan to test the HTT with the 555 in this MB in the next few days. I tested some with the 965-C3 earlier but not extensive enough to give a fair evaluation. Those tests may have been on the shipping bios Version 1.0 rather than version 1.2 anyway.

TheGoat Eater have you noticed this during any of your testing of this MB? I’m still on bios version 1.2. It may be just this MB that I’m testing for all I know. I have cleared the bios but I haven’t reflashed though.

I tested HTT a great deal today and I’ve posted one screen shot below of which I feel was the best all around result. The only thing my test proves is that I was able to overclock this test system at the displayed speed for the duration of the test. I have no idea how another processor would affect the test result. The chip tested is an X2.
Although I tested for max HTT I concentrated most of my effort using the X14 multi.
IMHO, this MB can be difficult to overclock if you expect consistent results. For this post I’ll confine the description of the inconsistencies to the HTT testing.
The first test the memory was installed in the blue slots, NB, memory speed and timings were very low or slack. I started the first test at HTT 300 but no post. To post I had to set the HTT all the way down to 252 at which the system also loaded the OS.
Test two I moved the memory sticks to the black slots and the system posted at the above HTT of 252. I worked the HTT up until the max post was at 330 but it wouldn’t load the OS. The OS loaded at an HTT of 315. To get the system to run prime95 I ended up at 14X286 and I stopped the test after an hour and a half.
Test three I moved the memory sticks back to the blue slots and the max post was HTT 322. The OS loaded at 320. The system would run prime95 at 14X300 which I stopped at 30 minutes+. I have no idea what max HTT I may get if I move the memory sticks back to the black slots again? I really didn’t try to get the very last MHz out of the system so there may be a bit more to be had? Maybe after more bios work it will clock the HTT higher? Your results may and probably will vary.
I have the processor under some good water cooling as speed fan indicates the max temp @30C during prime95 using a vcore of 1.58v+ in the bios. That max temp of 30C was after hours of repeated tests mostly prime95.

I have this board. I am running into one problem overclocking. Everytime I set my HT/FSB to higher than 208 the board doesnt boot. I can keep it at 200 and overclock my processor through multiplier, but it would be really nice to boost the bandwidth of the ram and play with timings to get even more speed.
help getting past 208 FSB?
I am having issues with my OCZ BE 1600 CAS 8 modules. I cannot run 1600 devider. Bios won't post. using 1.2gios. Oh, ya I was able to resurect the board using a LPT port a home made JSPI1 cable and the latest bios. I will only buy boards with the JSPI1 connector now LOL, recover the bios with ease. I ran the GPU at 900mhz for OpenGl test in CB 11.5. Going to get some 3dmark in and see how it runs. so anyways, a list of things I know so far
Needs better AOD support (Fan control, voltage control, BE memory profile support)
One thing I can say, is my CPU temp have lowerd with this board over my UD5P.

instead of using prime for many hours, you can try intel burn test for a few minutes and get the same results.

sorry for my delay in posting as I have been a little busy and then it equates to me being more tired in the end... My review will be up next week, after a new bios is out that will hopefully resolve some of the issues with the unlocking we were experiencing... I have good hopes for it :)
In the meantime if one is having problems with their unlocking not working (wanting to boot properly) please set NB to 8x ratio and NB-HTT to 8x as well... seems to have cleared up things for me for the time being... though oddly enough my 1 TB daily/HTPC drive i doesn't want to boot with 4 cores only 3 and it works just fine on my standard install of 7 on my ocz agility

This board ships with a BIOS that has native X6 support, right? I'm most likely (90% sure) I will be picking up a 1055T and this board tomorrow from Microcenter due to their motherboard/CPU deal... Buy an AMD processor, get $50 off the motherboard. The processor is $10 cheaper than newegg, and the motherboard is the same price, less $50, so even though I'm paying $30 in tax, I'm still saving $35ish over newegg.
Only downside is, I still have to wait on newegg to ship my RAM ($105 g.skills), unless I settle for some "meh" Corsairs there for $135ish.
Since I've never owned an AMD setup (prebuilt Compaq with K6-2 doesn't count), what are the dividers like for memory? Could I hit 3.6, 3.8, or even 4.0ghz on a 1055T and still be okay with DDR3-1333 or would I need -1600 for a 1:1 ratio?

MSI's AMD Mainboard/BIOS X6 Support
This board has up to 1:2 memory divider(lowest). So if you are aiming for 4GHz on the 1055T (14x286), your DDR3-1333 will operate @ DDR3-1144.
The next available divider is 1:2.66 or 3:8 which will result in DDR3-1521.
Here's my feedback (issues) with the BIOSes released for this MSI 890GXM-G65 board so far...
v1.0 (original) BIOS:
- Inaccurate readings of CPU vcore in all programs (Win7 x64).
v1.2 BIOS:
- Corrupted my RAID-0 disks array when upgrading from v1.0 BIOS. Required a re-installation of windows (can't be repaired).
- Win7 setup now requires RAID drivers to be manually loaded during installation. Previously there was no need to do so in v1.0.
- Core-unlocking is very unstable. I attempted to 'unlock' an Athlon II X3 440 but the system froze (black screen) after booting. It was the first time (and only time) that I had to reset cmos jumper. Never had to do this since. Either this was poorly implemented or MSI simply rushed out this BIOS without testing.
v1.3b2 BIOS:
- I received this bios from MSI Tech Support when I logged in a report regarding the issues I had earlier (as well as lack of option to disable Turbo Core for Thuban). It did not fix anything.
- Unstable CPU vcore (under-volt). CPU required higher voltage than v1.2 BIOS when overclocked.
v1.4 BIOS:
- This version finally adds the option to disable Turbo Core.
- However, vcore readings in Win7 (AOD/Everest/MSI Control Center/CPU-Z) still do not reflect the ACTUAL voltage.
Here are the settings in the latest BIOS to disable Turbo Core (sorry for the not-so-good pics).
On Gigabyte and Biostar the option is called 'Core Performance Boost'.

That throws a big wrench into the works, if I can't boot with an X6. I don't have any other AMD processors to boot with to flash the BIOS to one that supports X6.
Cheapest you can go with that board for a processor is the Sempron. That's about $33 at newegg. Too bad you don't know anything with a spare athlon II / Phenom II.Quote:

What tests should I run on it? I thought about comparing it to my current E6600 setup but I figure now, it's futile. No reason to compare because it will be blown out of the water.

Bought a 1055T, MSI 890GXM-G65, and 4GB of Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600. It is gravy, from what I've experienced so far. The BIOS boots so much faster than my old one.
My board came with the v1.0 BIOS, and had that 800mhz boot bug. Took a bit to get the BIOS updated (more confusing than my P45 ASUS ), but I put the v1.2 on there. Third boot, I bumped the FSB up and booted at 3150mhz, stock voltages on everything, NB overclocked a tiny bit, and RAM at only 1500mhz. I'm going to play with it a lot more tonight, but BOY is it nice to see 6 cores in the task manager instead of two.
I do however have a couple gripes with this board.
- 4pin CPU power instead of 8pin.
- No on-board buttons for power, reset.
- No "power" LED showing power is being supplied to the board (lights near the socket for phases don't turn on until the board is powered up)
- Only two fan headers (CPU and sysfan near the SATA ports)
- Not a fan with the IDE/24pin placement.
- Needs more SATA
- Would like to see a rear panel CMOS reset
The first four are my biggest gripes, the last three are more minor.
I'd like to add the inconvenient placement of the clear cmos jumper to those gripes.

3300mhz, 14x236, HTT is 1888. I forgot to change the multi from 8 to 9. If I try and boot at 250 or anything, gunning for 3600mhz, I bump the HTT multi down to keep it around 2000mhz.

When I changed the CPU voltage to anything lower than like 1.45, it turned red, signalling me that it wasn't safe to do that. Odd. The CPU VDD voltage started at 1.1v I think, so I bumped it to 1.3 (.1 increments I think?) and it's booting fine now. My RAM is actually underclocked at 1573mhz, 1.657v.
I don't like having the voltages on auto (uneasy feeling, fearing overvolting without my knowledge), but I don't know what to set them at. I have 3300mhz stable, I think, but I don't know what to set any of these voltages at or what to raise when I have instability. I don't know what each effects. I'm aiming for 3600mhz, if not higher.
i'm sure it's not internal testing, if you use the online update the 1.4 bios is the latest, not too sure why it's not available for manual download, anyways, ordered 2 kits of the black edition rams. one stick ok, one stick DOA two stick with error detected.:confused:.Quote:

Well my HTT can go high but my 550 BE is pants. It unlocks but does not overclock much, core or NB.

I dont know much about OC, so hopefully someone can help me on this, I know most ram when out of the box only goes upto about 1333 max, and my ram will go upto 1600, can anyone provide my the right bios settings for this motherboard and ram setup upto frequency 1600.

BTW you can increase voltages on hex cores on this board beyond 1.475v by using the fine adjustments to above it.

Currently testing:
310mhz HTT, 2.8ghz ish HT, 2.8ghz ISH NB, 610mhz 6-6-6-30-1t ram.
1.425v CPU core, 1.325v NB.
Does anyone have measurements for the NB and MOSFET cooler mount holes? I'm looking at watercooling the board and need to know the measurements in order to find waterblocks.
Also, are there any programs out that measure the NB temp? HWMonitor and the "Control Center" program on the driver CD don't display it, nor does Everest.
has anyone done any settings for their rams on this motherboard, I cannot seem to set my ocz rams at frequencies 1600.

does anyone use the core unlock feature on this motherboard, and have had problems with the feature not working after the pc has been turned off.
I sometimes get the message ( not word for word)

press Del to enter bios setup
press F1 to use previous settings
press F2 to used safe default settings

My bios settings for OCZ BE 1600 CAS 8 modules.
If you want 1600mhz depending on your OC method, the MEM divider will vary. If not HT Ref clocking, just set it to 1600. Other wise you will need either 240 or 300 HT Ref (at least what I have used) to get 1600

For those who are interested in watercooling this board, I talked with Jeremy at Danger Den today about possibly getting a waterblock made for the MOSFETs and possibly a NB/MOSFET combined block like you see for other boards. Show your support if you want something for this board! :)
They only block I could find that fit was a "universal" one from some company in Germany at a cost of 38 euros, plus shipping.

The info helped me alot, I did manage to get it upto 1600mhz (cpuz show 800mhz), but it was unstable, I have found out that my cpu x2 555, one core out of the four all show errors, so I will have to get it changed.
now I might get the 960T or 1055T, hopefully the 960T is still available in china, since it's been comfirmed that retail sales has been cancelled.
anyone have had luck with unlocking Athlon II x3 435? i have 1 CACYC (deneb core, unlock to x4 + Cache L3 is possible with this chip) but i didnt have any luck unlocking the 4th core and/or L3 Cache.

opened two instances of CPU-Z and the new "BIOSUnlockCPUCore" app (just copied the name of app- ?may change?) - this is what it looks like at start

- Now I forgot to take a Screenie of the app after switching "Unlock CPU Core" option to "Enabled" ... It had shown only three Cores (Core 1,2,and 3) before it prompted to restart. To check what had been changed automatically in BIOS I went in - Before going in during the restart I got the familiar Red text "things have changed" Post screen knowing things had changed by seeing the B55 as CPU and pressed F1 as usual to continue - then it restarted again and posted as a B55 again and went into BIOS with delete during POST.

As you may or may not have know, I have trouble with core #4 of this booting into my regular HTPC/Daily OS so I made the change to disable core #4 only (leaving everything else alone)

Definitely a good option for those not too familiar with BIOS and core unlocking, making this a useful app for those wanting to unlock without messing in the BIOS - gets a thumbs up from me :up: :)
Thought I had posted about this - after enabling core unlockign it will restart come up to that message (in Red) and you want to press F1 , then it restarts again and then go into BIOS or do whatever you need - so after core unlocking you must F1 past the red message and it will restart - then go about things normally :up:Quote:

I can't find anything negative about this board... It's just awesome, seriously MSI has done it again. They succeeded with MSI 790FX-GD70 and now this board is beyond amazing with pure stability, great OC, CrossFireX with an mATX formfactor. OC Genie is really great, I never expected overclocks like these and low volts with an automatic function AND being 100% LinX/Prime95 stable.
The only bad is the 4-pin CPU-connector but that's not really a big deal... :up:

AMD Forum's MSI 890GXM-G65 Review

dude please help me..i have this board and running windows 7 32 bit..
i would like to know if this is really the limit speed of my system..if not please advice some overclocking configuration..
i tried to overclocked it...my processor is from 2.8 GHZ to 3.6 GHZ...i just set the the multiplier to 17x and FSB to 212..set the ram timing to 6-6-6-18 and
adjusted the ratio to 1:2:66 and also set the northbridge to x11...
i already test that setup with amd overdrive stability test for 20 minutes and it works fine..
but when i am going beyond that overclocking config. i may be able to
boot to windows but when starting stability test my system will reboot..is that the max performace of my system and this board?

well, my board just gave up the ghost. was priming ~3.4ghz and then it hard shut down, wouldnt boot back up.
1055t w/ dip switches to ON for ~3.4 1.35v all else on auto.
be careful with this board and x6 cpu.

just exchanged the motherboard... hopefully this one wont die. I did notice quite a bit of 12v ripple on the last board... this one is rock solid so far
upon inspection of the pwm i noticed a bit of solder bridging 2 of the fets. HOPEFULLY this is what caused the previous failure.
currently testing at the exact same settings that killed the last mobo. going to let it run for 24 hours on small fft.
What voltage are you running your 1055 at for 3.4ghz?
Post back when that 24hr prime run is done... when it is, I'll feel much better about the PWM setup. Right now I'm kind of nervous because my heatsink gets kind of warm.
I think most of the heat in the PWM heatsink is from the NB, (via heat pipe) which I find gets pretty damn hot.
i'm using the X4 965 at the moment, PC on 24/7, and the cpu stock heatsink and heat pipes are running cool, not even warm.
just passed 24 hours of small FFTs w/ 0 issues. The last board must have been a defect. Wish i got a pic of the pwm area but it seriously looked like solder got splashed on and it bridged 2 of the fets.
this buid was for pure simplicity and ease of use as it is going to a customer and if the bios were to reset, the pc would be a piece of cake to restore the proper settings... as you are prompted in post that something happened i.e. cmos reset or failed oc, you can hotkey in a profile and boot from it

pwm heatsink got to 70c - measured w/ VA8090 (thanks ryan!)
