Looks like only 256 or 512 memory until the 12 port comes out - whenever that will be.
Marvel 88RC9580 processor at 800mhz - anyone have any info on this?

The new LSI controllers are catching up quickly.
I think Tilt's best HDD vantage score (9211 with 8? x25m's) is better than mine (1231ml-4G, 12xacard).
I'm not sure if Tilt's latest HDD vantage runs are with or without the new LSI software, Tilt?
Vantage is only one benchmark, but that said, interesting to note that if you look at the top 20 in PCMark Vantage (the over-all test suite scores) - from 1 to 5 it goes: 1231, 1231, 1680, 1680, 1231 (all Areca's) - http://www.futuremark.com/community/...pcmarkvantage/
The new LSI controller based systems currently hold (at least) positions 8 and 12 in the top 20 (there could be more LSI's in the top 20 - sometimes hard to tell).
CompuT's run at 20938 is right up there - #12 in the top 20 - the new LSI software should hopefully propel these systems higher.

soon my results will be public so u will see ;)
the only way that the LSI will be in top 5 past correctly the learning period of the BBU. and using the controller with write back with BBU settings for some reasons the learning periond last for 30 days... At least to me..
now for the 9211 just wait and u will see the performance charts.

now for perfomance comparing to the ARECAs
lsi is using DDR2 @ 800Mhz but the ARC clocked at 533Mhz...

Test Copies of the ARC-1880, already last year at the Cebit show with the promise that the cards in the first quarter of 2010 would come on the market. The new adapters are no longer based on I / O processors from Intel, but running on a Marvell 88RC9580 processor. This chip is clocked at 800MHz and features an integrated controller sas-6G. The cards have a PCI Express 2.0 interface with eight lanes and are standard equipped with 512MB DDR2-533 memory.

I like the low profile design of the 1880x though I would really like to have seen a 12 port model (2 8088's and an internal 8087) which would be perfect for server cases to you can run the internal boot mirror off the card and then attach external storage chassis since you're still limited to 4 cards per system. Also 1GB of ram would have been real nice to see build on-board. Are we sure it's 512MB only on the release models?

Where can the LSI controllers be found in Europe? Do they have something to do with 3Ware?

LSI bought 3ware so if you see 3ware cards for sale somewhere you should also be able to get the LSI ones as it's the same company.

What I find remarkable is the value difference - LSI 9211-8i for ~$235 versus Areca 1231-4G for ~$1200
The 9211 gets at least 80-90% of the 1231-4G performance - with the new s/w - it should only get better.

Yep the 9260 should match up well with the intial batch of 1880's - it is reported that the later - full height 1880's (the 12, 16 and 24 port controllers) will be able to use up to 4GB cache - those are the ones that most xtreme user types (me included) are waiting for.

not to mention that LSI's cards are more mature. they have made absolutely fantastic progress, and with the promised coming increase in performance...who knows. they are saying a few weeks for the new firmware. the arecas do look promising, dont get me wrong. but i think they are a l9ittle late and it will take time to catch up. i wonder if they pass trim. and where are the prices dammit? i might just buy one to totally bench the :banana::banana::banana::banana: out of.

I am more interested if they implemented DIX/DIF extension support and large sectors (524/528b or 4160b) like they mentioned last year. TRIM just moves the delete/erase cycle to the delete phase which may help some of the user experience of a SSD but that's pretty well masked if you have ram cache which you would on raid cards. (acting as a buffer) whereas the DIX/DIF is more for data integrity.

for an immediately available card it sure is scarce. no sign of it anywhere. not even listed on their site. i doubt you will see anyone pass trim for a long time.

I would imaging that the date is for world wide
I don't think a hardware manufacture would launch hardware just in one european country
They would only launch it in the usa of but not one medium sized European country.
webconnexxion is also on of the larger dutch shop's so i would think the date is accurate

Of course there is no cache listed in the specs, because there are no exact specs te find on the site of Areca about the ARC-1880 controllers.

How mutch cache the controllers get depend on the price and availablilty of the memory modules on the moment of release.

I guess it will be 512MB or 1GB modules, maybe the smaller models 512MB onboard and the 12 ports controllers 1GB. Expandable to 4GB.

Ans still there is no release date known yet. And Areca is very quiet about this series :mad:

1880 will be launched next week. :) now we shall see some specs, dammit!

is the XOR a dual-core? I remember when the 1680 series came out everyone raved about the dc xor drastically reducing RAID 5,6 rebuild times.. or am I missing something?

no dual core. specs are hazy as hell. steve-o i have it upon very good info, (but do remember folks, they had a "launch" months ago) however, they say actual physical product should be rolled out next week.

the post is by phule. i have scanned the file for viruses etc, and it is legit, there is a TON of info in there!

I downloaded the file earlier today, as you say, all using HDD.

Not that interesting imho, waiting for some SSD benchmarks.

well i see my source didnt pan out...gah! hard to believe they are this late to market with this product. the R&D must be killing them!

This is getting ridiculous.
Mayby they found a slew of new bugs in the firmware they are trying to fix.
2 years ago i tried building a server with a x48 chipset ,arc-1222 and server 2K08
The system didn't boot off the acera.
Worked perfecly under server 03 ,linux etc but not server 08 tested by me and the store.
We then send the server to acerca and they found the problem.
What was the matter some of the memory adressing of the controller overlapped that of the ddr3 and server 08 checks for that where other os's didn't.
When they tried on a board that supported both ddr2/3 they had the same problem but when the mobo was outfitted with ddr2 it worked flawless.
They never encoutered this before and had the problem on all DDR3 boards.
The store replaced the board with a x38 ddr2 model so i could get the server working since acerca couldn't fix it with in my deadline for getting the thing on-line.
It had to be done during the holliday's since it was the new server for a school to replace the dying server there.
But i never did find out if they fixed it.
Mayby it is still the same issue troubling them.

nope. last concrete thing that i heard is that they had big problems with a subcontractor and some chips they provided, and that the chips were actually already on a :banana::banana::banana::banana:-ton of controllers. thats it, besides a few months later a false alarm on release date.
