DPC Latency Checker

I just came across an interesting monitoring tool. Simple and free for non commercial use. :) Probably not much use for storage but interesting anyway.

Thesycon’s DPC Latency Checker is a Windows tool that analyses the capabilities of a computer system to handle real-time data streams properly. It may help to find the cause for interruptions in real-time audio and video streams, also known as drop-outs. The program supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP x64, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 x64, Windows Vista, Windows Vista x64, Windows 7, Windows 7 x64.

If any kernel-mode device driver in your Windows system is implemented improperly and causes excessive latencies of Deferred Procedure Calls (DPCs) then probably drop-outs will occur when you use real-time audio or video streaming applications. For an explanation of this effect see Background information below.

The DPC Latency Checker tool determines the maximum DPC latency that occurs on your Windows system and thus enables you to check the real-time capabilities of your computer. DPC Latency Checker works independent of any external hardware. Using this tool may be helpful in the following situations:
You experience interruptions (drop-outs) in a flow of data processed in real-time, for example an audio stream, video stream or a sequence of measuring data, and you want to find out the reason for this problem.You want to verify that your Windows system is configured properly so that it is capable of handling real-time data transfer before you install the corresponding streaming application.You want to check if a particular computer system is suitable for streaming applications, for example before you buy this system.

Something is wrong with your rig... This latency doesn't seem to depend on the speed of anything. I checked with a friend who has a pretty slow PC (3ghz c2d, raptors, 4870) running windows 7 and he had ~20us latency.

Mine changes... If I launch some heavy game like dragon age it jumps to 400 momentarily. Also, if I launch a bunch of apps the average jumps to 40ish.

Intriguing. I don't know if your latency is just insanely low or if mine is retardedly high, but I'm on a mission now to get mine down.

AFAIK DPC latency has nothing to do with the speed of the pc it is to do with latency between the cpu and the rest of the system at driver level.

If I run in safe mode my system is a lot more snappy so there must be a driver or back ground service slowing things down somewhere. The difference between safe mode and normal mode is like the difference between ssd and hdd. :rolleyes:

DPC Latency Checker measures the response time of your system. The response time is influenced by any other application that is currently running on your system. For an accurate result, we recommend you to close all applications before launching DPC Latency Checker. If you run this tool while there are applications open you will notice that, while you close them, the results will improve.

Device drivers are high-priority tasks that need to be processed right away before any other task. If a device has an improper driver this operation is going to take more time than usual and it's going to slow down the system.

The length of delay varies greatly between computers and the software and device drivers installed on them. DPC Latency Checker is a tool for checking how bad the latency of a computer is, and can then be used for troubleshooting.

The checker can be left running while changes are made to the computer to see if they improve the situation

Unfortunately DPC Latency Checker only shows if there is a device driver problem, not which driver is causing the problem. You will have to manually disable and then re-enable each device driver from Device Manager.

Disabling drivers one at a time could not find my problem. Maybe it's a back ground service or maybe it's just an accumulation of lots of things. :shakes:

My latency graph is similar to yours. This rig has never been really smooth in gaming. But then again, I'm running an Asus board. I plan on going i7 with a gigabyte board in the near future. This is on a fresh install btw.

What kind of latency are you getting?

It seems like the latency checker agrees my games aren't running smoothly. This was with a single HD5870 running BF:BC2. Even if I have a solid 60FPS, it can still feel choppy (a bit like how people describe microstutter, although I am running a single GPU.). It's done this on multiple windows installs, with different videocards, different PSUs. Only thing that hasn't been different, was the RAM, motherboard and CPU. I doubt a Q9650 can cause this problem, nor can the ram. I think I'm looking at a crappy mobo here. Makes me look even more forward to upgrading.

Edit: Will ask people in the Maximus II Formula thread to run this program. Also, audienceofone, what mobo are you running?

if I plug in a keyboard with a semi failed USB controller the latencies jump to 5k every few seconds :D

OneHertz, I think we'd all love to know how your results are so low! What OS are you running?

Asus Rampage Extreme. ICH9, Intel G2, 4870x2 & 6gb ram.

I've tried disabling drivers, disabling features in the BIOS and disabling services. No change. It must be @ OS level however because things get snappier in safe mode. Unfortunately DPC Latency Checker does not work in safe mode. I think it acts as a driver so safe mode is a no go.

@ One_Hertz are you still using a stripped down version of XP? Maybe this is just Win 7?

Yes I am running a very light xp x64 with everything I do not need disabled, but that is not why my results are low. My friend is running a full version of windows 7 ultimate and he sees 15-20us. There is nothing in common between our rigs at all.

If I move the mouse back and forth very fast it goes from 14 to 25. My windows xp laptop (full version of XP though) is showing results like yours... 85ish.

This is interesting. So we have you running a gigabyte board with sub 20 latencies, while audienceofone and me are using Asus boards and getting 100+ latencies. I wonder if there's a correlation between the motherboards used and the latency. We need a far bigger sample size for that, though.

EVGA x58 Classified, Samsung F3, Auzentech Forte, 5870, Win7 x64. The latency is jumping around a lot... Usually around 70-150us, but sometimes jumps to 500-1000us! :o
I am not experiencing any issues, though. I tried changing the mouse and it made no difference whatsoever. I think it's the audio card, it's buggy sometimes. Oh, and I need a reinstall, but doubt it's the case.

Yeah.
Tried disabling the sound card, the mouse, the gamepad (although not sure I disabled it entirely) the RAMdisk, the DVD drive, the network adapter, all the ATA controllers, most USB controllers, didn't help. Couldn't disable the keyboard properly (can only uninstall the driver it seems... Razer Lycosa).

Hmmm, another thing has just struck me. Of the people having 100+ latencies, we're all using ATI cards. I'm using a 5870, Zalbard is as well and audienceofone is using a 4870x2. What videocard are you using One_Hertz? :)

Nevermind for the videocard comment. This guy with a 4870 seems to run with low latencies just fine. That leads us right back to the motherboards again :shrug:

Hmmm, so your friend is using an Asus board and does get good latencies. Proves my theory wrong. Kind of weird though. I'm running a pretty similar rig as you:

im running PCmark V. and the maximum latency is 16-18 μs :S i dont know now what that means :S

Well, as soon as I get some more money, I'm moving to an i7 platform on a gigabyte board. Just bought 2 more x25-m 80gb which will join my single one in raid0, and the 1TB drive, so it's going to take a while ;)

My friend has an i7 with a Gigabyte board. 100-110 us latency.

I've got two brothers. One is using a Asus X48 board (Bios modded to the Rampage Formula) and one of them is using a nVidia 680i board. I'll ask them if they could run the latency checker for me. I'll report back with the results.

@ Musho This is not about hardware it's about drivers. That is what it is checking. If someone has the same hardware but is using a different driver the results could be very different.

I've tried disabling hardware one bit at a time and nothing changed. :shakes: Maybe it's a combination of drivers.

I might just try a fresh install and load hardware one bit at a time until I find out what's slowing things down.

If you're doing that, please report back! I have 2x X25-M 80gb on the way, which will join my single one this Monday in raid0. I will do a fresh install, and will run the latency checker the moment I hit the desktop. If it's still high, hardware does have an effect ;)

What?

L2 latency is a few ns. One nanosecond (ns) is 1000 times less than one microsecond (μs).

80μs is like 40,000 times more than the latency of L2 cache. 80μs is the latency of current SSDs.

More than likely.

I found a few more tools but they don't help me. PCI Latency Tool 3.1 v2 lets you set the latency priority on the pci bus, but only if you are running xp.


CEntrance ASIO Latency Test Utility for audio set up.

I don't know if this could possibly related, but I'm still getting GSODs with my 5870, despite the driver fixes. Could the GSODs be caused by timeouts, because of the high latency? I know there are more people who are still experiencing GSODs, so maybe they should run this tool and see if they all have high latencies? We don't even know what this all really means, but I'm quite obsessed with these latencies at the moment.

Saw your request to do this so here it is. Not really sure how long to run this no time to play more.

Here's what I get on my classy e760 at 210x21 and memory at 1680 7-7-7-24. This is with stripped down 7 at an idle desktop. Task manager shows 34 running processes (including the intel raid, ati, and creative processes).

Sorry about that! I thought that might be quite useful if it could curb latency bandwidth on a graphic card so that a pci raid card could get more of a look in.

I have the 5870 on the UD7 above - looks pretty normal.

If you take a look at my shot, I'm definitely having the same problem. What other hardware are you running? I've got all of the onboard equipment aside from the intel SATA controller (which is in RAID mode) and one of the LAN ports disabled (eg. sound, other lan, firewire, extra sata controller). I've got a 5870 (that is WC'd so I cannot easily remove it) and a X-Fi card installed.

i7 920, 5870, 6GB of G.Skill RAM, Auzentech X-Fi Forte (I tried disabling it), I removed the mouse for the test, Logitech Lycosa keyboard (could not disable it entirely without reinstalling the drivers so I didn't bother), Samsung F3. Not using the page file. Large System Cache enabled.

Is anyone running Win7 64-bit with ultra low latency? I am wondering if 32 -> 64 bit transaction is creating the issue...

I'm running an i7 920, 6GB of OCZ Ram, Creating X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty, Razer Diamondback (not using razer driver), Fatal1ty Keyboard (no special drivers), 2x 7k1000.C drives in RAID0, and 1 750GB Greenpower. I've gotta run now, but I'll try disabling things later to see if I can find anything.

I'm running w7-64 on both my desktop machines and looks like i'm having average latency - not particularly low.
I have not really turned off any services either.

DPC over-work seems to be related to HW or drivers faults, from overheating GC to a bad driver, and to a problematic battery on a laptop,
you can read it all here,
there's a tool that might help you find out the source for these, RATTV3, it goes for XP yet seems to have some issues running on vista and win7 though.

Alright, this is neither Win7-64 nor E760, gah... I am thinking it's either my keyboard or 5870 now.

You guys aren't going about this the right way. This isn't a benchmark. Your score is going to change more from motherboard to motherboard than from CPU frequency to CPU frequency. Again, it's an analysis of DPC latency, NOT a benchmark.

This is obviously not a benchmark. But there is a problem with my system, and I really want to know what is causing it.

nice sound card indeed :up: modded makes a sound system sound 10k+watts.. if i got time ill post a pic of the whole sound system/card @ sound/audio sub-forum

ssd upgrade is inevitable! unfortunately worthy available options are very limited.. q4 cant come soon enough

you bet ill be keeping/using 1231 for a long while.. 2012 shall come to pass lol.. having been enjoying it since 2008 its been a great investment so far

out of curiosity zal, what B2B setting are you running and have you tried changing it from auto to say, 3, 4 5 or 6? Would be interested to see if it makes a difference.

high dpc latency: poorly configured system

light os only goes so far.. proper hardware settings do the rest

rig in sig. Creative XFI fatality soundcard in there to. window 7, nothing disabled, modded, just a standard ol install of Win 7.

My Gigabyte X58a Ud3 is goes from 40-60, have not checked the other rigs.

It's set to 3. Haven't tried changing, I can I guess...

Pulling the USB drive that I had connected dropped the absolute max down to 154 and the average down to the double-digits. It seems pretty much anything is fair game.

Uhm, as far as I know, forums (and communities in general) are about people helping each other, sharing knowledge and discussing things. You're asking people to reinvent the wheel, while you already seem to know quite a bit about bios settings affecting the latency? Pffff :down:

seems to me it is people using xeons and server OS. as a matter of fact the best rewsults are from that in two rigs^^^
the lanes on xeons are faster. they also have double the amount of lanes. the server os also takes advantage of that.

It was in my post. DFI board with a Xeon 3110. :)

I haven't taken the time to tweak out every single sub-timing and probably never will, especially when there is no noticeable difference outside a benchmark.

In all seriousness, I have known about this tool for years. I heard about it in the context of pro recording DAWs. If your laptop has wifi enabled and Vista, it will probably shoot up above 1000 every few seconds. On an AMD Athlon64 PCI (socket 754) system I was lucky to get under 100. For some reason, this X58 system scores a little lower with my bluetooth adapter, eSATA external drive, USB flash, and Firewire sound interface plugged in and on.

My system has been suffering from audio/video stuttering ever since I upgraded to windows 7. Ive ran the latency checker and it shows me spiking all the way up to 70-80k, which is pretty bad.

Ive tried just about every solution I could think of; swap soundcard/videocard, update/try drivers for every device, go into device manager and disable every device I could, reinstall windows(premium/ultimate/betas), update mobo BIOS, use default bios settings, changing out memory etc. everything short of swapping out for a new motherboard(dont exactly have another i7 board on hand to try that). All the hours ive spent on the net say it can be any random driver/irq/device conflict so pin pointing it down to a single point is almost impossible.

Has anyone else every had an issue with DPC latency similar to mine?

system specs;
CPU - I7 920 @ 3700mhz
MOBO - DFI X58-T3eH8
RAM - OCZ 6GB PC3-12800 Flex EX
Video - EVGA GTX295

Take out as many variables as possible. Run with just 1 stick of RAM, on stock settings. Detach your secondary hard drive and only use your primary one to boot into windows. Move your videocard to a different PCI-E slot. Detach any USB devices you don't need. (Wifi USB stick, storage USB, headset, printer, etc). Don't use anything else in your PCI and PCI-E slots. Now test again and report back what you're seeing.

And by the way, did you run the DPC Latency checker right after installing windows? Don't install any drivers or anything else. Run it right after you hit the desktop. If it's good, install drivers/attach devices one by one and keep checking if it comes back. That's the only way to pinpoint the problem. Good luck! :up:

& leave your network cable unplugged during this process. You do not want windows update to install drivers or patches for you in the middle of your trouble shooting..

I did a fresh install of windows on my second harddrive and the first thing I did was fire up the checker and it still had the problem.

Either way Ive pin pointed the problem down to my cpu, as I was actually able to boot up into windows with no DPC issues by only running 2 cores and no HT, but I havent been able to reproduce it(saved the BIOS settings but they dont seem to work anymore). Changing the various cpu settings in the bios is the only thing that effects severity of the latency.

First thing I wuld think of is a driver - have you got latest drivers for everything?
Next, check the windows logs and look for any warnings or errors.

Maybe Intel will replace under warranty with a 930 :) :shrug:

I'll go ahead and revive the thread since I came up with some "fixes".

I owned EVGA X58 Classified E760, now I moved to Classified E762.
With pretty much bare bones fresh install and every single non-vital device disabled, I had 110-200 µs DPC Latency.
I kind of gave up on it for a while...
Recently, while being bored, I downloaded and installed LatencyMon to monitor DPC Latency. Quite a handy tool, which shows processes that create DPC delays.
So, the problem ended up being "ntoskrnl.exe" - Windows kernel (core)... Which means that no connected device is responsible, but the system itself.
So, I went into BIOS, and disabled pretty much everything I could.
Long story short: disable HPET (entirely) and disable C6 State (C3 and other ones are OK).
My DPC is now down to 10-14 µs. Occasional spikes to around 50-100 (thanks to HDD activity, I guess... I have not figured these out yet), but it's not a big deal as they happen every 10s-30s only.

Now the question is... Do all of you experience the same? Or is it EVGA's screw-up with BIOS, and enabling these does not cause higher DPC on other boards?
Feel free to leave feedback to show if it helped or not and how these settings affected your system.
