New PCMark Vantage World Record - Thanks to All of You

Much thanks to all my friends on Xtremesystems.
Particularly those folks here in the storage forum.
I think Mike G had a much stronger processor overclock than what I was able to do (4.5)
I was able to make that up with a killer storage system based on information and knowledge mostly gained from all of you, my good friends here - in this forum.

The Areca 1231ML performed very well - I have high hopes for the new 1880 series.

PCIE at 105, higher didn't seem to score as well - the rest of the benches on the storage system - Areca 1231ML-4G with 6 Acard 9010 "boxes" set to R0 so 12xRaid-0 -

I have the x980 preordered that I will run at 5ghz+ on my SS but I won't be able to beat you because a raid card with substantial cache is required to do that...

pcmark vantage doesnt perform with more than 4 cores 8 threads.... belive me... im using 8 cores 16 threads and am getting lower marks than a quad core

It might be limited to one socket.

How much of a difference does a good GPU make in these tests? My ruffus cascade should be done in a few weeks, and I know I can get 5.2GHz benching stable out of this 920. However I am rocking a 8800GTS 640, and don't really see me upgrading for a while. :ROTF:

Although I could throw the 8800GTS under a single stage and throw a whole lot of voltage at it. However even then I think it is a lil' outdated.

Based on what I have seen so far - pcmark vantage responds very well to cpu ocing and fast storage, not so much to memory speed (at least not i7) and some but not much to video subsystem.

oh I know it doesnt use more than 4 cores, but the gulfy is a bit quicker (especially versus my qx9650) as it is.

As soon as intel finally releases the thing I will have:

i7 x980 @ 5ghz+ on my ruffus SS (-35C @ 300 watt load)
6gb of DDR3 2000+mhz
5870CF (I dont think CF works for vantage though so I am probably better off taking the better ocing single card)
4x x25-E on 9211 (ich10 may be faster)

If I had a 1231 then I'd have a good chance of taking it.

edit: lets take top 3 or top 5 for xs :D?

Hi, first congratulations Steve! I'm new to xs but have a build coming in the next week or 2, grabbing the 9211 and 9260 and as soon as they are available 256g c300 8R0,
look forward to benching with you guys, I'll let some of you guinea pig the new erecas and if one stands out i'll grab it too

lol now your tallking. i am going to pick up an 1880 as well just for kicks. might be waiting a while for the 6gb/s ssd though. i think the new intels coming q4 look just about right, either that or the jetstream from iddilinx. we will see when that day comes.
OR if i can sell these 8 vertex 30 gb for 80 bucks apiece i might just pick up 8 x-25v

I was at least glad to find out crucial is doing both oem and standard retail boxes, my wife is going to lose her mind when she finds out I spent 6k$+ on just "some computer drives" :)

PCMark vantage responds very well to cpu oc.
5ghz w/o 1231 might still take it.
Look at Mike G's details (now #2) compared to mine - he beat me in most of the subscores - his WR stayed on top for 7 months.
I suspect Mike had a huge stable cpu OC - I had to beat him big time in a couple of the HDD subscores to pass him overall.

I ebayed eight 30GB turbos a couple weeks ago for 100+ each, you should have no problem getting $80 ea for yours - just don't wait too long.
And absolutely - yes - four or more x25-v's is a killer set up - do a compare for us: ich10 vs 9260 with x25-v's!

Not sure which bench your looking at but if it looks to good to be true its most likely due to the 4GB cache on the raid controller.
Using iometer - run at 1 minute, queue depth @ 64 - I can get 4K random read of 195MB/s - just shy of 50K iops.
I think that is mostly the acard array (DDR2 based) - though controller cache always helps some - I'm sure.

Yep, you are almost 50% more iops than me at 4k random - the 9211 is an amazing controller.

If I oc the pcie to rather dangerous levels (120) - I can get closer - 232MB/s vs yours - 286 -

Hey SteveRO, could you do some benchmarks using the 2 X25-V 40GB in raid without the Areca controller? I want to compare it to an X25-M 80GB using Trim. I wonder which one would be faster 2 x X25-V 40GB or 1 x X25-M 80GB. I would like to know if X25-M 80GB Trim = 2 x X25-V 40GB Raid0.

Its very intresting to see the difference in gaining points @ PCmark Vantage

why does it gives only 195MBps with 6*ACARDS on the ML?
it gave a better score with 4 on the ICH10R..
it should give ~the same results with 2, the ICH10R over there^^ the ICH must be limiting it yet it still scales less then the 4*X-25V's reaching ~110k.

the 1231ML should have drawback against the 9210/9211 testing speed with it's cache enabled,
it'd go strait to the CPU with an HBA...
computurd has shown 158KIOPs with an 9260-i8 and 8*32GB vertexes, yet could it be that the IOMeter test was testing with a small file so actually the cache was tested?
the 9260 seems like a better choice anyway...

RAIDing 2*ACARD's on the ICH10R and adding the other 4 on a 9210 should really scale better ..

The ioxtreme has no real cache. It uses some RAM, but AFAIK it is not used as "standard" cache.

How are you "tweaking" the 9211? There are like no options to tweak.

playing around with 9211 bios and drivers gain ~ 3500 - 4000 points in Vantage so there is a way to tweak some staff ;)

if you adjust bus voltages and pcie bus and some other things in bios, and some things within your os, there are many things you can do to tweak even a fairly 'untweakable' controller. play around in your registry sometime with queue depth stuff when you are bored

PCIe bus speed has a rather nice affect on my ioXtreme. @ 110MHz I get a 100MB/s increase in sequential reads & 50MB/s on sequential writes. Although small file IOPS don't change. It won't detect the card @ anything over 112MHz though. :shakes:

My 9211 is stable up to 118 PCi-e but I don't have a decent array to test out on it atm :/

yes alot of it depends upon your controller. some controllers balk at high pcie and will shut them self off as some sort of protection. probably from overvoltage or somehting is my guess...but just a guess.
but some wont take pcie at ALL, like the 4320 from highpoint, if you raise it to 101 it :banana::banana::banana::banana:s its pants. However, the 3520 from highpoint will rock up to 115 pcie.
the LSI 9211 takes high pcie rather well, the 9260 doesnt like to go over 108.
the areca 1680-ix is a horse and will take about anything you throw at it. the 1220 areca suxors though, almost as temperamental as the 4320
and i am no fan of going to crazy on the ich10r. brings about to much instability in 24/7 usage.

@tilt---nice gains you have made, i see you are getting more familiar with that monster server motherboard of yours!! is this through pcie packet expansion? looks great! i will be home around 2:00 AM athens time tomorrow so hit me in MSN!
