5.1GHz 980-X On...... Water! *Validated*
-
Sweet! Congratulations to you.The new Gulftowns look like big fun. Is that full tilt on the CPU multiplier?
-
Nopes, Looks like iv got a lot more headroom :)
Would like to point out this is an A0 CPU ;)
Recently bought a pot from Otti to see what this can do under LN2 :D
-
1 Attachment(s)
Nice little chip you got there and a good result. Have you done any Vantage runs yet?
Here's my Vantage result with 980-x on water.
-
Hi man,
No vantage runs yet, im not a fan of 3D benches due to my crap GPUs and random scores, id much rather 2D benches like WPrime and SPi,
I have 2x GTX280's, 1x GTX260 and 3x 8800Ultras
-
Ok, I'll try to hit the 5 GHz to night with cooled water and do some WPrime and SuperPI runs. Yuo've got the Q3QP like me right?
I've also got a Q3FE but it's half dead now, did some LN2 benching with it and hit 5,6 GHz.
-
wow, very nice cpu! great job
-
looks hot mate.. i envy your set-up.. :D
-
Thats not core i7 980 X cuz the cpu has stock speed of 3,33ghz ! and yours is 3,07ghz
-
Yep im Q3QP too :)
Im just using a standard WCing loop no chillers etc,
Iwaki RD-30>Sqiftech Apogee XT>PA120.3>EK400 Res>Iwaki RD-30 (I have another PA120.2 that i can whack in the loop if i feel like it ;))
Im gonna get a Q3FE hopefully, LN2 it :)
How did you half kill it?
@Beleno - Cheers dude great chip waiting on my Q3FE ;)
@PyronOrm - you need to research a bit more mate, 3.07GHz IS 980-X its a Q3QP the Q4EG is 3.33GHz Rev B1 mine is RevA0 ;)
@belmontrich - Cheers man!

Your loop is similar to mine, I'm using DCC pluss in a XSPC 5,25 res> PA120.3>Apogee XT with no chillers.
As I live in Norway all I've to do to get chilled water is to open the window/door and place the system close to it, it's -10 C outside:p:
I've got now idea how the Q3FE half died, it boots with vcore below 1,2 but just bsod with anything above:shrug:
-
Dang, this is pretty sick, what was the BIOS-set voltage?

Q3FE / Q3QP arent 980x , That s only pre sample Gulftown.
Q3VG (3.33Ghz B0) and Q4EG (3.33Ghz B1) are 980x :D

hmmm gpu-z sys Ati Hd 5800 and HD 5900 ? weird

Yes its weird but I wanted to try out quadfire on my R2E and I already had 2x 5870's so the only solution was a 5970. I now got a P6T7 and 4x 5870 that I will try out today.

Ahh cool :)
I might run my rig outside, im unsure how reliable the temp sensors on my cores are though, showing 36-46*C when prinning @ 5.1GHz with my fans on full blast through the rad and on the shipset (All Scythe Ultra Kase 3000 150CFM fans + Scythe Kama Flex 80mm 90CFM fans)
Hmm, that doesnt sound right... did it only start after the LN2?

Ahh gotcha, that said RevA0 is far superior to RevB0 much like with i7-975's,
I know of someone who has both Q3QP, Q3FE, Q3VG + Q4EG and by his results under LN2 the best performing is by far the Q3FE (6.5-6.6GHz) then Q3QP (6.4GHz) then Q3VG (6.2GHz) and finally Q4EG (6.1GHz) it may not seem like a lot but there are worl records to be had ;)
-

It started during the LN2 run after about 4 hours, thought it was ice problem with the first memslot at first.
-
For sure you insulated right?
Condensation is a killer...
-
Yes insulation was good, but after 4 hours ++ I got some ice on the first mem slot.
-
Hmm, could it have anything to do with it shorting out and perhaps messing with the mem controller on the chip?
-
thats my thought too, cause it bsods on everything but stock vtt
-
That definatly sounds like your mem controller is gone then :(
And theres very little you can do to a broken chip :/
-
The only thing to do is to set the vcore to 2,2 and say godbye:ROTF:
-
Hahahaha!
Well you can run it at stock volts for the rest of its life on air ;)
-
That's boring and it's not stable at stock anyway, I've got the Q3QP to play around with so it doesn't matter. I'll try to push it later to day and possibly take it out of it's misery.:p:
A couple of pics of my kitchen/benching table.

Ill pay teh postage :P
My little bro could do with a new computer ;)
Nice setup dude!
Right beside the door thats open, haha quality ;)

With -10C straight through the rig, check the water temps on both loops here.
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/7042/004qev.th.jpg
Min GPU temp 4 C:cool:
I can do 1,35 vcore and 1100++ on the 5870's with those temps
-
Thats crazy 9*C fluid!
Haha, its times like this that i wanna like in the arctic circle :P
-
Weird
those with the A0: If it has six core, 6 threads, it's a gulftown, pure and simple. Don't let these folks with B0+ give you any BS about otherwise.
-
6cores, 12 threads? not 6 threads right?
Gotta figure out what to do with the rest of my Q3QPs and Q3FEs :)
-
-
-
i'll take that half dead chip off your hands!!!!
one mans trash is another mans treasure :)
would a step towards finally building an i7 system...;)
-
I love to see 6 temp with realtemp ;)
Great chip guyz !
-
I have HWMonitor of it @ 5.1GHz if you guys want:

i got this today

My SS is arriving next week along with my chipset waterblock and LN2 pot :)
This chip is in for a bump ride :P
-
nothin.. i got 12ghz with heatsink made of kryptonite

herd duniek was gona make a fullcoverblock outa this kryptonite hottness!!
-
How do you guys think this baby will run on standard high end aircooling? I'd like to see how it will run at maximum safe voltage rating. :P
-
probably this same as you have now with your 920. may 4.6-4.8ghz without crying to much. Hey you guys with the A0's how the CPU longevity at those high voltages. I would thing balancing some of the load onto the QPI would help you reach you clock 29x times 180 QPI =5.2ghz, and so on. If the memory get squirrely I just drop it down to 2:8 or whatever works. Not Criticising, Just curious why put all that juice on the CPU?
-
ive heard of several gulftowns dieing with 1.4v after a while... so be careful :D
very nice results! slightly higher than the best 45nm quads, but with 2 extra cores :D
now if only those extra cores made a difference in more apps :/
-
So you guys recon down the multi's and up the QPI?
@saaya - What Gulftowns? Q3QP or Q3FE? or the new B0 + B1 Revs?
:)
-
no idea... :D sorry...
but i heard from 4 people that they killed a gulftown with 1.4-1.5v
-
I was running @ 1.58v :P lol
Im asking for teh explosion :P
-
very nice testing :) hope to see ln2 soon.
-
Cheers dude :)
My pot will be arriving on friday hopefully, my 50L dewar sometime in the next few weeks so itll be a while,
That said im VERY apprehensive now due to saaya's comment on the voltage :/
-
i'm using 4.8GHz 1.46 24/7.
-
Hmm... ill have to talk to the guy i got it off and see what he thinks :)
But ill be getting it all sorted out with LN2 within 3 weeks, cause i have to get a dewar
-
vcores i used:
A0 - 1.32 - 1.48
B0 - 1.40 - 1.54
Both are alive and well but for safety keep below 1.50 and as far as vcore killing any 32nm cpu, i killed only one a Intel i5 661 "Those are very sensitive"
-
Hmm.. is that just suicide running with CPU-Z or is that stable?
I dont plan on running it stable at those frequencies im just trying to get it to go as fast as possible,
The WR for my chip ATM is 6422.48MHz here:
http://hwbot.org/community/submissio...0x_6422.48_mhz
Using a VCore of 1.84V!
How come his or indeed anyof the LN2'ers chips explode or refuse to work anymore?
This guys is @ 1.87V!
http://hwbot.org/community/submissio...0x_6122.92_mhz
Leaderboard:
http://hwbot.org/rankings/benchmark/...e=core_i7_980x
I dont get how people can say they blow up @ those voltages and there are plenty of cases where OC'ers can get then toeven 1.87V?
-
-
Hahaha >.<
Thats epic!
Im well chuffed :)

your stepping has no current protection built in. I have seen these steppings die at stock voltages....
Good luck:up:
-
Thanks for the reassurances :P
EDIT:
Surely the current is regulated by the power supply?
I have a Silverstone SST-ST1500, which in my view is a very reliable power supply :)

it has nothing to do with your PSU......
-
V increase = I decrease if constant Resistance... no?
And the resistance is constant in a CPU or does it get higher with the temps like in a wire?
-
It will not work like that your stepping can even work with 1.9v but a single time then it will probably die.
The A0's can OC like a champ because of how it scales with voltage. Anything above 1.5v is risky imo, the B0 i have is suppose to have voltage protection but i feel its a high leakage sample and am not sure i want to push it...
-
Awh dammit :(
But as long as its cold enough (LN2 + 4.5Kg Pot @ ~-100*C) it should be okay?
I mean i ran 1.58v and didnt get temps over 46*Cish
-
Gawd I would love to play with a A0 chip!
-
well congratz for 5,1ghz on water but i can fix it on air with my extreme 975 :) cheers to us
here is mine Valid url: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=913577
-
Great work dude!
How the hell did you cool that with a Noctua CPU Block?
I was expecting an Ultra 120Black with something stupid like 2x Delta 220CFM fans in Push Pull :P
-
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1029148
i got today again...
Many sessions and still alive...lol
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=977466
this last month...
And Q3FE
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=968027
i got 6250 but validation "dump" -
I think is really a nice chip
-
1.905V! on a Q3FE!
Your insane man, AFAIK yours is from the same guy as me :P
I like the 1.823V on the Q3QP, but your on LN2 dude, im on water so far, my pot by otternase arrived today so ill be playing with LN2 soon enough (practicing on some S478 boards)
How does the voltage work, as in is there a way to work out max safe voltage?
It seems the colder it is the higher you can volt it, i want to go 1.62-1.65V but i am to scared of bricking my chip... :(
What are your normal temps like, for example on air, cause my max @ 5.1GHz was 46*C which aint right... is it?
PS... rbuass your a legend :D
-
1.55~1.58V works fine more than 5200 ghz to bench
1.75~1.78V to 6 Ghz....
higger than 6 Ghz....more power....lol
First screen you posted is from coolaler (The WR for my chip ATM is 6422.48MHz here)...isn t welcome in XS...lol...he knows why
Nobody believes isn t a cheat
;)
-
cool :)
Coolaler is a cheat?
How so rbuass?
Pm me if you need to :)
What do you mean by the first screen i posted? :P

yes coolaler links not taken lightly here ;)
also - this really shouldn't be in the xtreme overclocking section - please read rules of this section
-
i linked to coolaler?
Ahhh my mind its burnin' up >.<
Ahh sorry about that dude, can you move her for me?
:)
-
-
Great run dude!
I got 5.2GHz last night on my water, my EK full cover block arrived today so ill hopefully hit 5.3GHz today,
Also got 3.16s WPrime32M last night
Ill post up the proof soon ;)
-
Thought id update here rather than a new thread :)
5.2263GHz on water:
http://valid.canardpc.com/cache/screenshot/1031285.png
http://hwbot.org/community/submissio...3_mhz?new=true
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1031285
Is that a safe voltage?
And while im at it, i got a new full cover block from EK and dropped NB and VREG temps by 20*C!
Last night I also did a WPrime run @ 5.1GHz (3.14s Trying to beat a guy on DICE with 3.110s):
http://hwbot.org/signature.img?iid=3...se&iehack=.jpg
http://hwbot.org/community/submissio...140ms?new=true
1.729V... is that an okay voltage?
I mean my max temp was ~ 50*C, but you guys keep telling me 1.5V + = dead chip? WTH?
I really think i can so 3.1s> on water but im afraid im using too much voltage or using it in the wrong places, if you guys want i can post up my BIOS template?
Cheers guys :)
-
1.55V vCore was the max safe voltage for 45nm i7 according to Intel, and it should be even lower for 32nm CPUs. You do the math...
-
Hahaha, is that running on their stock cooler? :P
-
Regardless of cooling. 45nm i7s are much hotter, though.
-
-
No. Well, to make it more simple... The first thing to care about is the temperature. Even if you're only using 1.1V, if the chip is running at 95C you're slowly killing it. But once your temperatures are fine, let's say under 70C (for instance), then this "max safe voltage" comes into play. And no matter how good your cooling is, once you're past that your chip is slowly degrading.
Intel says that max safe vCore for 45nm i7 is 1.55V.
-
Ahh okay,
Im sitting @ 36*C Idle and the NB + VREG are at 32*C + 35*C @ 4.6GHz + 1.55VCore
I guess ill lower my voltage then :P
-
So confused how this thread has 82 responses and ~3k view and there is nothing regarding Xtreme Overclocking going on here.
-
-
Just an update to do with the thread:
From the section rules:
Quote:
The Xtreme Overclocking section is for top-end EXTREME overclocks and large achievements. Generally if you aren't at least on dry ice, this is the wrong section. If you have an absolutely EXCEPTIONAL air, water or single stage overclock, then it's acceptable.
-
It looks like some pretty exceptional overclocking to me. :)
-
It is crazy what these chips can do....can't wait till the poor college students can afford them haha
-
Poor college student right here ;)
-
@Mods - Can i have a thread name change from 5.1GHz to 5.3GHz as per the result above :)
Cheers guys!
Myles
LN2 results coming soon ;)

hi guys, got an Q3FE here, running this CPU on 4,4 Ghz i need 1,4V to get it primestable... Will this CPU die with 1,376 Vcore and 1,29 VTT quickly? On 25°C water so far.

Those voltages so far have seemed safe for everyone.
-
thanks Mr. Tool - i like Tool btw xD
Problem that i have with the A0 is that DFI does not support uncore = 1,5x Mem clock - so i can't reach my prefered 2 ghz mem clock. With retail CPU, you can go on 1,5x but i think DFi will not fix this problem for A0 any more...
Intel specs say 1,375 V max für 980 - so i think i'm on save voltages so far. 4,4 Ghz 24/7 will be fine. C1E works fine so the cpu will only see 1,4V while i'm encoding bluerays. ;)
