Pentium G9650 + H55 vs. Athlon II X2 250 + 785G

Our friend on inpai continue their interesting reviews of the new (and old) processors. This time around we have budget combo of the new 32nm Pentium, and Athlon II X2. Only problem with the "budget" part is the price of the Pentium CPU:

This was to be expected the intel igp in the g6950 runs at a crappy speed even compared to i3/normal i5's. I am surprised that the athlon x2 won in winrar and sandra 2nd and 3rd test then again i cant read which are those tests, can be some thing related to graphics...

WinRAR is really about mem. bw and how many threads do you have available, and on what freq. do you run them ;) so it's no surprise that Athlon II X2 won this one.

This Pentium G6950 has got to be one of the worst price/performance Pentiums ever!

The i3 does not do that bad in the winrar test actually. The performance of g9650 is below par i think its due to the cache hit and maybe lower uncore speed?

I dont know what speed uncore runs at for the g9650...

it's mixture of all - cache, speed, and threads.

Pentium runs @ 2.8 GHz (21x133)

I think the AII X2 255 will be a pretty fair match for the G9650.. I was assuming it would replace the 250 at the same pricepoint, but with the pricing of this, who knows.

Looks like AMD are pricing against the 775 Duals which are good enough value, but have ordinary IGP boards to go with them.

and now show us results with max stable oc on air with both setups :D

It's Pentium G6950, not G9650.

I don't get it. Why do many of you misremember its name?

for $99 I would get an anthlon II X4 instead :)

im so dyslectic i had to read that atleast a dozen times to see the 9 and 6 being swapped

Stock speeds for a basic HTPC/desktop usage PC I'd go for the Athlon of course.

Overclocked? Probably won't be much of a fair competition if using a dedicated card to game.

G6950 is $87 MSRP so I'd guess the price will come down if anyone even cares about that chip :p:

I see no reason to put this in with a mid series gpu like the 5750 and up since for $25 one can get the i3 and for another $75 one can get the i5 750?

The prices of both the 32nm 1156 cpus and the H55 mobo's is very high to be of any good in terms of value for money. If Intel decreases the price for the H55 too much people will buy a H55 instead of the P55 "Yes H55 will most likely work with a i5 750 only video out will not work"

When the G6950 does hit $87 "if it ever does" amd may out a Athlon 260 or something which most likely will be cheaper and perform as good or better than the G9650 due to the raw speed.

At 87$ it would still have to go against the x3 435. Intel seriously needs to do something about the prices of its lower end products.

I see no reason to put this CPU with anything other than low-power everyday rigs like an office worker would use.

All I was saying, is that the review basically told us everything we already knew that 785G >>> Intel junk IGP :p:

If the Intel IGP is sufficient for your uses, then it is potentially viable as an alternative, but if it isn't and 785G IS, then go that route of course. I just meant that if someone were buying this chip and cared about gaming performance they should be running a cheap dedicated card, and if overclocked, the CPU's wouldn't be very comparable since the G6950 will clock like mad under little cooling.

i dont think they do, they probably are making killer profits off these chips and people will pay the extra 20$ or whatever it is for the intel brand name. i think this is more about a marketing advantage, thats giving average users the idea that its better. this is ofcourse just talking about OEM full systems, and i have no idea if those are sold in bulk at the same price as AMDs

This is the most useless review I saw in long time. Really, who would buy those cpus for high-end gaming on igp or/and for wprime & sandra benching. Ppl usualy buy such cpu for internet, office, image editing, audio encoding, htpc or even basic video encoding from dvr cameras especially when it has very low power consumption. Unfortunately all this wasn't tested in this review but fortunately there are many other reviews.

Overal the performance is on pair with X2 550 which is $99 on newegg.

BTW, Nedjo, Biostar MB you linked even have no HDMI port and useless for htpc.

what would you expect from the average consumer... they'll gladly pay $300 for some bose headphones and will likely enjoy the hell out of them until they listen to a pair of headphones that sound better for half the price

i dont think theres much need for intel to lower their prices. the last thing they want is to get trust busted

the sempron 140 when unlocked by the right board, is really monster price/perf here.. could spend the rest on a 5670 for a nice little computer

What crap are you people talking about overclocking? Have some of you had AMD processor in last year? Cheap Biostar motherboards overclock like crazy, I hardly ever buy Gigabyte or ASUS again having Biostar in my favourite shop now.

Most X4 Athlons go at minimum to 3,5 GHz. So most X2 could reach the same or even near 4 GHz. What else you want for few bucks?! This is not enough?

I'm smack to rocks together vs. getting anything on an ECS board. Then after it dies (and it will) you can come borrow one of my rocks to bash the ECS mobo.

Face it, Intel fails at making graphics and don't expect IGP to be any better, either coming from NVIDIA or ATI themselves. But I do give them credit for trying anyway.

The capablilities of Clarkdale IGP are perfectly fine for all but high-end graphics. But it also applies to the capabilities of competitor's IGPs. Moreover Clarkdale IGP has some features which competitors miss (such as dual video stream decode and HD audio bitstreaming through HDMI).
