Dual pumps noise

Its well know that a single d5 is more silent than a ddc 355, but what happen when we use dual pumps?

Do dual d5 match the sound of a dual ddc with top??

Someone with the ek dual d5 top can post their experience??



Im looking for a silent setup with dual pumps, but i dont know if a dual d5 match a dual ddc, if so i will buy ddc because they are small and the dual top is cheaper. If the d5 where more silent, the extra money worth the silent for me.

how would it be possible for 2xd5's to be louder then 2xddc's?
The numbers and physics itself should tell you that answer.

Is dual pumps worth it? That totally depends on your definition of worth it.
I run dual ddc's, because:

1. Redundancy
2. Head Pressure
3. FLOW

However not a lot of CPU Blocks will take advantage of that big of a boost in FLOW.

So will your system be better?
Once again that is dependant on what you intend on running it with.

Will you notice it?
On idle, most likely not, on load, you'll see some benifits. Although it wont be jaw dropping to the point of a new discovery.

I want dual pumps because of item n° 1 and because i will have a lot of blocks and rads in only one loop so.

Depending on what fans your running, and how loud they are, you probably wont notice the difference from having a second pump.

if the one the pump is louder than the other .... the louder overwrites the dBA

For now i have an mcr 320 and a mcr 220 with push pull sflex @ 800 rpm

I depends on the speed of the pumps. I have 2x D5 Vario in my rig, previously used with a Dual Top (EKWB), and now used with 2x single tops (EKWB X Top Rev 2).

IMO at same speed, it's less noisy to use 2x Single top than 1x Dual top at same speed but... now I have 2 loops instead of one. But what is noise.... I mean there's a difference between measured dB pressure, and frequencies. A high (or worster medium) frequency emission bothers me more than a low frequency @ higher level. It also depends on how regular the sound is, if the sound modulates and changes, it's a nightmare. For example @ speed 5, the D5 is less noisy than @ speed 4 because between speed 3 and 4, there is some harmonics emitted in the midrange/high frequency range, @ D5 is more within the hights range so... it depend on how you hear sounds and on how sensitive you are to frequencies.

Another thing is: vibrations. This is a big deal with D5. Since I use the Gel Stuffs from Petra's Tech, I don't worry about vibration transmission to the case. Very good solution.

Then... it depends on how the case will behave I mean... echoes, resonances, etc...

Conclusion: it depends. But if you're looking at performance, and if you are talking about D5, I don't think you can expect silent operations. Let's say it's my point of view, it depends what is your definition of ''noisy''.

Been testing my CPU loop this weekend, with 2xD5's in both serial and parallel.

Serial :2xD5 -> Feser Monsta -> Apogee XT -> EK-FB KIT GA X58
Paralell: 2xD5 -> "Y" -> Feser Monsta (two ports both inlet and outlet) -> "Y" -> Apogee XT -> "Y"

It's no doubt whatsoever for me that the XT benefits from using 2xD5's at full speed in series.
I'm looking forward to get the EK-Supreme HF - Acetal - it might be that it will benefit from higher flow instead of higher pressure.

I would never changed the D5 standard tops if it wasn't for that I needed to swap them out because of limited space (Bitspower D5 MOD Kit coming...)

For me it is worth running a dual pump setup - more noise ? I have lost +50% of my hearing so I really don't know :rofl:

Well I see another reason from upgrading the stock top with an aftermarket one: fittings! Pluging a 7/16'' ID tube on a stock D5 top is REALLY difficult, need some hot water, time and energy to succeed. With a top (single or dual) you can choose the fitting size and kind depending on your tubing.

Concerning the performance ratio .... IMO 2x Single top or 2x D5 connected together are as good as 2x D5 in a dual top. I made comparisons between 1x D5 with stock top, 2x D5 serial with stock top, and 2x D5 serial with a dual top:

Finally the benefit of the dual top is the ''all in one'' format with reservoir. But today I have 2x X Top Rev 2 instead of the Dual Top. 2 loops ok but if I go back to a single loop, I'll use 2x single top and not anymore the dual top because it's easier to swap a pump in case of failure with separate pumps. And because I didn't noticed any real benefit of the Dual top performance wise. Ok the test setup was not including waterblocks, but in real operation mode... theres no difference at all, some % but not a big deal.

Clamps and reservoirs are for pussies :D

Final build will have clamps, and one reservoir for the gfx loop :p:

I could silence a single D5 with extensive use of suspension ,decoupling, and sound proofing. The noises it produces then are mainly vibrations - any other noise would be trapped bubbles which should be eliminated anyway. But indeed, the D5 vibrates a LOT. I'll let your imagination run on what uses you could find for your girlfriend here :D

Very very efficient. And small height for maximum performance. The foam sandwich below is there only for placing the pump heigher that's all. The other pump is only placed on 1 gel stuff that's all.

Bu I do not agree fully with your statement, the pump motor emit some frequencies dependings on the speed. It's not fully silent, and I'm not talking about bubbles or stuffs like this.

For the D5, elastic suspension, silentblocks, or gel pad, all work well, then block the acoustic path with sound dampening material (to kill the high frequency pitch), and you'll only hear it when you have bubbles going through it.

I won't be worried with pumps noise. The fans for that system will be much more noticeable than pumps.

Guys if ur dualing up, you really wanna use clamps.

If I remember correctly, Scaniris did that test to prove exactly that :).

In my experience most of the "noise" from a pump is actually caused by the vibration of the pump being transmitted to the case, which acts like an amplifier, and increases the amplitude of the vibrations from the pump, causing the pump's "noise" to actually increase. The best way to eliminate the transfer of the pump's vibration to the case (and the noise) is to use Petra's gel stuff (http://www.petrastechshop.com/pegviabbl.html) (as has already been recommended above). That gel stuff really works, and you don't need any additional foam padding. Get the gel stuff and be wonderously amazed at how suddenly "quiet" your pump becomes.

Now according to what data is available on the internets:

The D5 pump emits approx. 34 dba.
And the ddc 3.2 emits approx. 32 dba.

So 2x d5 pumps will emit approx. 37 dba.
And 2x ddc 3.2 pumps will emit approx. 35 dba.

Please note that you have to add logarithms when adding decibels, and that 35 decibels is approximately twice as loud as 32 decibels, due to the logarithmic scaling. So the bottom line is that one D5 will be louder than one ddc 3.2, and two D5's will be louder than two ddc 3.2's.

My final comment is that failing to use clamps during testing is just plain foolish. And I love that pic of the tiny bit of anti-kink coil on a straight piece of tubing, and no hose clamps. That's like brushing your teeth before sleeping with a $10 whore, and thinking you're safe from STD's. Good luck with that! :up:

@ 400 liter / 105 USG per hour ( = 0,11 liter / 0,03USG per second), maximum flow rate I had with dual D5 with top @ S5 in operating conditions (480+240mm rad + 3 waterblocks), the time for having all the coolant ejected out of the loop is only some seconds depending on how many coolant you have inside and where the leak occurs. For 1 liter it's 6 seconds for example... (1 liter = 0,264USG). But 1 liter or 0,1 liter.... it's a disaster right? I didn't measure the pressure but it's probably pretty high too. When the collant becomes warm during operation, and depending on your tubing, you may face a huge disaster. I now understand why experienced XS members always recommend clamps. In my 2 first watercooled rigs, I didn't use clamps. I was probably a lucky guy... since the 3rd one, I use clamps, thanks to XS forum readings and user recommendations, and finally the cost is so low... that I don't understand what's the problem using it in a rig. Not sexy? If we have enough budget to buy some expensive waterblocks, nice sleeves, and s.o., we have probably some $ to spend in it.

My problem with Koolance clamps : I can't install all of them with the ''nice'' side visible, well I don't care because the side panel is closed during operation but anyway it could be a problem for some people. I mean it's hard to release it when you install it, and I need a plier (forceps? I'm not sure about the right work in english... a tool ^^) to keep it larger and fit it on the tube + barbed fitting. 7/16 ID - 5/8'' OD on 1/2 barbed. And I use 3/4'' Kollance Clamps (also primochill PVC clamps) for a good compression. I have to make some fingers-bodybuilding maybe :D

And i WONT be endorsing this product, until a few of my friends have gotten there RMA replacements.

Which means They been stuck with a broken res without replacement for a while now.

first off the connector is a 4 pin and not a 3 pin found on normal DDC's.

I say 3, becuase its + - RPM.
The 4 pin would be + - RPM PWM.

The point in pwm is the pulse the pump, so instead of screaming at 4000rpm's, it would go in a wave from 4000 -> 1400 -> 4000 -> 1400, as the cpu header emits the PWM pulse.

How he had it connected was 2 was a molex, or looked like a molex with standard + - , and the other 2 looked like RPM and PWM headers that went directly to your cpu motherboard fan header.

Thats how you controlled the PWM.

It was really cool, and im sure gabe will talk more about it when he decides to.

I had a chance to look at it when there wasn't
anyone in the room and you couldn't even tell
it was on!

I've built three Cosmos rigs and this was by far
the quietest computer I have heard.

ddc with pwm... to slow reaction time will probably be an BIG issue... might not be a problem for non-overclockers, but why wc with todays silent and efficient aircoolers if not oc ???

Yep just like my crazy fans. They have built in PWM and 4 wires. It was easy to setup and control. Right now they are running at 2500 rpm in my system instead of 6000 rpm which is great when I slid open the patio door when it's-30 outside and doing some benchies but definitely not on a regular basis. So using this for the DDC is an awesome idea that will help maintain pump power while lowering noise. Smart thinking Gabe! :up:

basically what a pwm does, it senses load on the cpu.

so if the load is on idle, it will pulse it low.

If the cpu is on load, it will pulse it high.

So your performance will be variable.

This isnt meant for us who go after low temps with high oc.
Its meant for the people who value there hearing more then the delta T of there eq.

Ok, the reason I'm so interested is I don't like the sound of my two DDC3.2 in my XSPC Dual DDC Bay Res. Put all my fans to low to test how quiet I could get it, but the pumps are really making a lot of noise. Atm I hear them over my fans which I never thought would happen as in my old build when I had the pump on a foam pad I could never hear it.

Guess we will see some reviews when Gabe decides to release these. Thanks for your answers NaekuH:)

I actually consider those XSPC bay res's as a soft hard mount, prime time for vibration transfer of just about every type. :down:

The only issue i see with the pump is longivity.

PWM cant be good on the pump vs having it run at full load.

I think this is the testing gabe is doing b4 he releases it.
Whch is smart, because the last thing he would want is a massive DDC recall.

Back then I only had one ddc in a xspc res/top sitting on a foam pad and I cant remember it making this kind of noise. The pump was then in the case, now I have two at the front which also of course matters.

The soft parts that are supposed to keep the vibrations from the pump going to the case are quite thin and hard. Might be that they are doing a bad job at keeping vibrations down. I'd want to change the xspc bay res to something else but don't really know to what I'd change it and if it would matter at all.

my DDC3.2 is way quieter than my Yate Loon 1600's on my swiffy 360rad and its mounted on top of a fan with a UN bracket... as a matter of fact i think i had to disconnect every fan in my case to hear my ddc with its xspc top...

pwm might be good for a watercooled HTPC tho

What about EK dual tops? They are intended to be mounted in 5.25" bays in same manner as XSPC res are, correct? Do they transmit vibrations to the case, or do a better job, or simply the D5 vibrate less than MCP355?

And one fundamental question - atm I have MCP350 with EK top. I'm thinking about dualing. Would you get another MCP350 with single top, a dual top from EK or switch to the D5s (have read the thread from the original post, still have to decide about dual or single top)?

I can't clear the misconception in my head - so the D5s are more silent and DDCs have better flow and pressure, right? Then again, I'm confused about how you guys seem to favorite D5s, I'm under impression there are more D5s in your sigs than DDCs.

You can't always get rid of them all, water always has a little gas dissolved in there, so pumping will give a tiny little cavition bubbles - you can cut down on it massively if you have a completely sealed system though, just put a couple of PSI of air pressure in the expansion tank.

And one fundamental question - atm I have MCP350 with EK top. I'm thinking about dualing. Would you get another MCP350 with single top, a dual top from EK or switch to the D5s (have read the thread from the original post, still have to decide about dual or single top)?

I can't clear the misconception in my head - so the D5s are more silent and DDCs have better flow and pressure, right? Then again, I'm confused about how you guys seem to favorite D5s, I'm under impression there are more D5s in your sigs than DDCs.

I go back forth between the two types of pumps depending on what setup i am doing. Neither are loud to me and both perform the same to me, but that's not scientific, just personal opinion.

Which one would you prefer in a single loop with high restriction? And with having in mind your response, would that mean that you would choose the opposite if the restriction was low?
