Modern Warfare 2 PC release starts with DVD Errors !!

For those of you who are PC gamers, you should wait on buying Modern Warfare 2 from the retailers. The PC version comes with 2 discs but it seems that only the actually game is working and not the extra content.

The first DVD/Disc is about 6.9 GB which seems to be the standard size for games that are coming out now. Unfortunately, each drive refuses to recognize the DVD. The DVD drives rattle around and you can hear the disc just clattering in the DVD Drive. Now when something like this happens, questions comes to mind and that is if this is a manufacturing defect and if there are other discs out there that have this problem.

A German game magazine reports the same problem. Every drive in their editorial office refuses the second DVD (they have seven PC's and four copies Modern Warfare 2 for PC). They say it’s definitly a production error.

Do I think the game is decent? I think it WOULD'VE BEEN the best pc game ever! My opinion of course. But destroying the pc community with their actions of late I will not play the pc version!!!

This is completely unrelated to their screwing of lately towards the PC gaming community. This is a problem caused by the pressing plant they contracted to duplicate the DVDs.

The game never went over 4th position on Steam, Borderlands has sold more copies, L4D2 too. A lot of preorders were cancelled on Amazon and different retail stores.

They will still blame it on piracy, as they always do. The fact that they transformed an epic game into a lemon has nothing to do with it of course :down:

ofc theyl blame piracy for poor PC sales. Even though the only platform it is being pirated on is the Xbox360.

A week ago they (i think IW) said that the game had leaked and was being pirated on PC and Xbox360 wich is pure BS and they know it. You can download the PC version but there is no crack for it and there wont be one till the game is out.

IW just doesnt understand that if i wanted to play a castrated console version of this game i would have bought it for my PS3.

I was considering the 360 version but alas Microsoft have declined that optio, 2nd RROD of 2009 this morning... still on my 1st edition PS3 but the 360... 4th since release.

I'd check if your campus has a firewall blocking uncommon ports, because the game uses Steam.
If you can't log into Steam, then you can't play the game.

We're talking about dvd pressing here not mass burning. The problem lies in the original master disc having the errors, not errors created through production fault. IW supplied the original disc with errors therefore every pressed disc will have the same errors on it regardless.

Maybe the first copies of the game were supposed to have "errors" in a effort to thwart piracy. Pushing people to just buy it off steam, just a little thinking outside the box.

If that was the case that's a kick in the balls for all customers buying a retail copy. What if they don't have the internet or have the internet and have heavy bandwidth restrictions, and thus can't download a fixed ISO image of the bonus content disc. Customers through Steam can always download a fixed ISO because if they bought it through Steam they obviously have an Internet connection or one where there are no bandwidth restrictions from the ISP.

Commercial CDs and DVDs are not burned. They are quite literally pressed. Little bumps and dips are pressed into a piece of molten polycarbonate, and then the reflective aluminum coating is applied afterwards.

They've already got their bases covered. Game operates completely through Steam, so no returns.

It would be hard to blame the community this time around. It's safe to say they've done everything they could. The only thing left to do is to wait and see how it does for pc.

I believe everyone is going to be wondering what IW/Activision will say if it does poorly. Will they blame it on piracy? Will they acknowledge their mistake and announce Dedicated Servers? Or will they come out and say future CoD titles will be console only.

I for one wouldn't care if they kill CoD for pc. At least that would tell other developers not to screw around with pc gaming.

Maybe where you live. In Australia the regular edition of the game will cost $90 off of steam, ordinary retail will sell for about $110, and the prestige will go for perhaps $150+

not only no dedi servers, but no lean, p2p match making, no console for fov changes and other things, and they were actually dodging the question when someone asked if the game was upscaled from 600p like the consoles. The pc version is quite literally a direct port.

if u look at the game on paper its worse than cod5 and 5 was worse than 4 so i dont see this going any ware for COD on the pc if they dont fix this one. and how your rating it as exceptional is uncompromisable considering that its built on MP and MP is gutted.

then i dont think that its destroying the community its destroying the COD community but they will stay with cod4 or move to bc2, and surprisingly there is no console community so the lack of 720p or better without upscaling and the lack of match modes and the cost of bad map packs never get any attention like they would if/when they try to do it on pc.

I LOL, there must be a lot of IW hate in this thread and I doubt many of you just read and comprehend the entire article.
First of all, it said: The PC version comes with 2 discs but it seems that only the actually game is working and not the extra content. so why many acting like the game doesn't work?
Second of all, the article is kinda vague IMO, when saying the actual game is working did it mean the SP or MP campaign or both working? I assume they both work since if one of those doesn't then they would have point out.
Last but not least, the games haven't came out in North America yet so we still don't know for sure if this is true and even if it is, maybe just a few disc got error that don't work. Don't mean to mention illegal stuff but there's a leaked extra content DVD on torrent that seem to be working, so what the deal on this?
My point is even though I don't like IW for doing such things to the PC gamers, at least I don't just jump and bash against them like some of you here, it's a bit much don't you think?

The only reason it is $90 (USD mind you) on Steam is because it is $110 AUD in stores. Activision won't cannibalise their retail sales with low Steam prices, so rather than reducing retail price they increase the price on Steam. Ubisoft and THQ are other terrible offenders. Solution: get US friends.

I've heard that argument before, and it doesn't hold water. CoD:MW2 is the only game I've ever seen on Steam for $90. Other new releases either go for $50 or $60 USD - never $90. Red Faction Guerilla was (is?) $40 in the US, and $70 in Aus. Far Cry 2 was $40 in the US, $60 here (I think it's the same now though). It's not uncommon to have the price higher here, especially for the first year.

$60 =/ $90. $60 is a small price premium over US prices, $90 is almost double standard game price and 150% of the price of a copy on Steam in the US. Quite a big difference there.

I've been pretty much waiting for this game since the release of the first MW and then in a couple of weeks the whole game got killed for me. For me personally, CoD is DEAD as a brick.

i bought COD4 and COD WaW purely for the multiplayer..
now i will admit i dloaded COD4 and played the SP, which i loved.
that caused me to buy it for the MP.

I'm personally typically a person who buys games based on offline play (I don't have much time do dedicate to online play/no real drive for playing online) but I liked the single player play of MW1, price was decent enough (got it for like 30 bucks I think) to be worth it for me...MW2...not seeing it

Just got back from ASDA (UK branches of the Walmart retail behemoth), fairly big queue around the store, not as big as for Harry Potter 7 though.

console gamers, most of them are like that,

on a more annoying note, just installed MW2, and steam is downloading a ridiculously big update, it's still at 0% after 10 minutes on a 3mb connection, maybe someone's hacked steam and it's downloading a virus or something.

UPDATE: it's at 1%!!!!!!!

DICE has never been that great, have we forgotten how they have mishandled the battlefield series? When BF2 first came out, and for the first few years after, every successive patch introduced more problems than it solved. Then they released an okay expansion and two crappy mini-expansions that could just as easily have been free content. They released a new patch for BF2 only a few months ago, it wasn't forgotten, just put on the proverbial backburner for a long, long time.

As much as I LOVED BF2, DICE really did fudge up BF2 big time with about 2 patches. Not that the others didnt have issues.....but 1.3 was a whole nother story.

Possibly, I remember the one patch introduced frequent crashes to desktop and the constant tug of war between balancing aircraft against anti-air.

What I also don't get is why people are treating MW2 and Bad Company 2 as mutually exclusive. Some people will buy both, some will buy neither. It isn't a sophie's choice by any means.

It figures. IW/Activision doesn't care about our protest. We probably only reduced their sales by 5% or less. In some ways, the publicity generated probably encouraged console sales and may have actually increased their overall revenue. They won't learn their lesson, unless the lesson is "it's ok the alienate the PC "fringe"".

I agree with metachronos too. DICE isn't any better. They may play along as a way to poach some COD players for themselves. But in the long run EA doesn't care about PC players either - they have proven that historically.

Seven million sales from which 12% are from the PC version.
If those numbers are true, we could safely assume that had the boycott not existed, the PC version would have gotten 100k more sales, meaning it would have been a whooping 14% from the cake at best!

That's the PC market on these overhyped and multiplatform games. And only on the first day...

I think with time people will drop the boycott and buy the game nonetheless. It's getting so much press that I'm sure a lot will not be able to ignore the game anymore.

Well, going by user reviews I've seen the MP is a lagfest. And since I spend 99.99999% of my time on MP, the game is dead to me unless dedicated servers come into play.

i played it today with my brother on xbox and i have to say its a disgrace to the COD lineup, they took team fortress 2, COD5, COD4, and mashed them all together and called it a game. My brother kept setting up automated sentry turrets and destroying people everytime they walked into this hallway on the airport map, it was hilarious. The graphics were terrible by comparison to COD4. The sounds, and game models were all copied over from the first modern warfare, and its completely unbalanced multiplayer. Which was something they tried to avoid in COD4.

mine's working fine!! no problems!! its a great game too - better than cod4!! except.....the way you have to log onto steam to play it!!! this is an epic fail! it ruins the game!! so if your internets down you cant play!!! rubbish!!! and no dedicated servers!!! fail!!! installation is a fail too - you have to download some steam updateds then blah blah blah....steam.....fail!

why cant they just make it like cod4/5 install it to you hd then put the key in and play???

this will annoy all pc gamers!!! good game but riuned by all of the above!

Good lord. You are just now figuring this out? It's really unfortunate that some PC gamers apparently purchased this POS sight unseen, and are learning the hard way.

Uh, you join the boycott of a the game, join a Steam group dedicated to it, yet two days after the launch of said game you can be seen playing it?
That's not telling good of the game, it's telling bad of the people. No Boycott will be taken seriously ever if this is what happen.

It seems that the only people who really canceled their pre-orders where those who posted a proof, or have a different Steam username than the one they use on forums...
And even those may be buying the game soon.

PC Gaming is getting screwed, and we can't do a thing about it.

it is, accept for the issues we pointed out before release that would ruin the gameplay experience. First of all, ping is definitely an issue, you shoot people standing still directly and they turn and shoot you in the face as if it never happened on very consistent occasion. Im sure most you can guess right, exspecially if you read the interview.

In all honestly the game would be freaking amazingly fun with just dedicated servers and lean, be the same game with extra :banana::banana::banana::banana: to do.

ps: i didnt buy the game, i played it at a lan center to get an opinion. I knew it would blow, but im an open minded person.

88% of that was console.

so the 12% that was pc... is 840 000.. 170k of that is sigs, is 20% of the pc community, which is about right as the hardcore gamers are not the majority, casual gamers do make up most of the sales, but hc support it through mods, servers etc... IW wanted to cut them out, and did so successfully.
70k + downloads of it on PC ... is a lot of lost sales. And although relatively 6 million is lost sales is small... its still 6 million they could have had, because you cant tell me it would have cost 6 mill in man power to implement those features... IW net couldnt have been cheap either.. They cut corners and allocated labour accordingly 88% dedicated to making the game console friendly 12% to iwnet, which will allow IW and Activision to emulate an XBL ecosystem, which is what i m sure they re planning, but they dont get, that pc s are not consoles.

Money always matters, the share price dropped on their launch day, 2 $ and only rose 23 cents today on the news...

At least for the PC.

Same thing happened to Operation Flashpoint: DR, no dedicated server and its practically dead because lag is hell.
