An SSD is built to replace a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) with added performance, lower power consumption and higher reliability. The Intel SSD Toolbox allows users to more effectively monitor and manage the SSD’s health. The firmware upgrade and Intel SSD Optimizer use the Windows* 7 ATA Data Set Management Command (known as Trim) to help keep the Intel SSD running at continued high performance. In addition, the SSD Toolbox and Optimizer also allow the respective enhancements to work with Windows* XP and Vista* operating systems.

“Fast and reliable access to data is critical for our SSD users,” said Pete Hazen, director of marketing, Intel NAND Solutions Group. “The latest firmware and toolbox upgrade for Intel 34nm SSD users provide a host of new management, information and diagnostic tools to help SSDs retain out-of-box performance. We are encouraging our 34nm customers to download the new firmware update today. Not only will Windows 7 users receive the performance enhancements of the Trim command, but so will our Windows XP and Vista users.”

For 34nm X25-M 160GB owners, the firmware update also offers a performance boost to sequential write speeds by delivering up to 100MB per second, a 40 percent performance improvement over the existing firmware version.

The Trim attribute of the ATA Data Set Management Command, often referred to as Trim, synchs the operating system’s view of deleted files with those that are deleted, but not erased on the drive. Trim tells the SSD which data blocks are no longer in use. This helps stabilize the performance and health of the SSD over time.

The Intel SSD Toolbox provides SSD management tools and information about the drive, including comparing Self-Monitoring and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) drive attributes to manufacturer threshold. It provides basic and full diagnostics, along with recommended actions. The Toolbox also features an easy-to-use graphical user interface that will allow end users to schedule and run the Trim command independent of the operating system. The company recommends users install the firmware update and toolbox, and run the Trim function daily to ensure best performance. If they are in RAID then you don't need to install TRIM because there are no controllers available today that can pass the TRIM command.

Yep, but I remember those rumors that said upcoming firmware will be able to push that TRIM trough RAID setup.

Now we need someone to hack this new firmware and bypass writing speedlimit on 80GB drive :)

Well apparently this shouldn't erase your data, but, intel does recommend backing up everything important in case the firmware update fails and you do lose it.

BulldogPO - Thanks very much for taking the time to post this information, its greatly appreciated! I just finished burning the firmware updater ISO and I'm going to flash the drive as soon as I post this message (I'll post back soon with results, as long as it doesn't corrupt my drive data)!

Same here, everything went very smoothly with no issues (W7 Build 7100 64-Bit & Intel X25-M G2 80GB)! I feel even better about my SSD purchase now that its working as advertised! I'm sure most know this already but if your running your SSD in AHCI mode make sure you change it to "Compatible IDE" before booting into the Intel Flash Utility, then just change back to AHCI after the flash is done before booting back into Windows.

Very hard, impossible maybe. Its the Raid Controller manufactures who need to get it working through a firmware update (fat chance though, aside from big names like Adaptec you may be looking at needing a new controller, when was the last time you saw a Intel or LSI onboard raid controller firmware update?)

Right now the raid controller takes the drives and creates a virtual drive with a hardware id that is tied to the raid controller, not the drives attached. Trim commands are sent from the OS to that virtual drive (the raid controller) and the raid controller ignores them.

OCZ has a temp solution in their newest Vertex firmware that has a sort of auto TRIM built into the firmware that runs when the hard drive isn't under load, but its not the ideal solution.

On my classified, my SSD is my boot drive and I'm running a Raid 1 as well with two HDDs. My Sata mode is thus set to raid but I have the AHCI option ( as well as IDE) ...

However I have no idea what mode my SSD is actually in.. does on matter over the other and if so, how do you check?

So if I understand this correctly, TRIM only works autmatically from the moment on that you install the firmware (assuming that you are running Win7 or else it can only be done manually). But the garbage already on the SSD is not deleted, that only happens when you actually delete a file or format the SSD?

So you have to use the manual TRIM command from the toolbox once to get the new state performance back. That, or a complete format.

Couldn't Intel just apply the toolbox functionality to their new Rapid Storage driverset / utility? Why release yet another toolset in concurrence. And why would they recommend us scheduling the TRIM via toolbox on daily basis? Doesn't Win7 do good enough job supporting trim natively?

Or is this just for the meantime, before intel actually gets a TRIM supporting windows driver out of the door?

TRIM support only works natively IF you have Win7 and IF you're running in AHCI mode... anything else, you'll have to run the optimizer .. daily it seems.

also to anyoen reading this and thinking of updating... DO NOT!!!!! LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER FIRMWARE WHICH MAY VERY WELL BRICK YOUR SSD!!!

I also read about several cases of briked SSDs aftwer this firmware update... backup your data if you go ahead with this update.

Flashing went smoothly for me didn't even change bios to IDE or anything left it in AHCI mode. Doen't work on 50nm SSD according to Intel ToolBox.

Intel announced back when the G2's were being released that there would be no TRIM for G1's.

There is no technical reason, only the fact that the Gen. 1 owners would not buy Gen. 2 since Gen. 1 have the same performance +/- 0.0xx%... You might hate them for this, and never buy Intel again, but they still don't give a damn, since they are so far ahead of the other mainstream competitors. They are in a position where they can do the most unforgiveable BS, and still not be able to meet the demand, what a crappy world we live in :shrug:

This is just utter BS, and contradicts his own statements in this and his latest article.. There are a flurry of bad Gen. 1 performers on every SSD forum needing to learn how to do HDDErase, even this one gets it's fair share of these posts.. There is no excuse for this ignorant behaviour from Intel and the ones blindly kissing their asses, period..

The performance degradation on Intel SSDs using 8820 FW had less impact than the Indilinx/Samsung, thats completely true, but that not means that G1s don't appreciate a TRIM support or a restore performance app ... "They already work fine with 8820, don't worry" sounds like an excuse.

I think you get the point. But, Intel can bring support G1 users anyway... if G1 series goes EOL, that fact will not affect Postville sales. Moreover, G2s units are cheaper to produce (as fas as they use 34nm NAND).

The problem for Intel in this situation should be how to get rid of 50nm drives stock.

Well, ignoring the Gen. 1 drives wont exactly boost the sales of them, infact giving it TRIM/Toolbox probably would, since most Gen. 1 in stock is 80gb versions (and alot of E's) and it's priced the same as 80gb Gen. 2. Many are tired of waiting for the Gen. 2 drives to surface (none in stock for weeks where I live), so a TRIM fw on Gen. 1 would probably be tempting, now however, without any TRIM support, it is not.. Getting stuck with a ton of Gen. 1 drives is their own fault, and they get no sympathy from me, quite the opposite infact...

Good point Ourasi, enabling TRIM support on the G1 drives would probably be the best way to increase the sales of these drives (and get rid of backstock)! Otherwise there is no reason to purchase these G1 drives in my opinion, at least not yet given the small price difference?

By the way guys I was able to flash my firmware to the new version with no problems what-so-ever (at least not yet anyway)! After looking around a bit on other forums however many people are having major issues since updating their firmware version (some suggest user error but I'm not so sure about that given how many people are having problems)? I'm just thankful it worked properly on my system and that TRIM is now working, I would be very bummed if my drive died! Thanks very much Bojamijams for bringing that issue to our attention however (if I would have read about this issue before flashing my firmware I'm not sure I would have tried it)?

vOdka - I just checked Intel's site and the download I used is still available (well the page is still there with all the details and download link), however as you mention once you try to actually download it there is a "File Not Found" error? Very interesting, it certainly seems like there might be more to this "issue" many people are having after updating their firmware (assuming that is why they pulled the file)? Of course it might just be a coincidence to but the timing is suggestive.

Like many who have already applied this new firmware I'm worried (at least until we know more about what is actually happening)? I just ran a SMART Attributes check via the Intel SSD Toolbox and everything checked out thankfully. The "End To End Error Detection Count" you mention above, do you know what it means in regards to this issue people are having (its one of the attributes checked via the Intel SSD Toolbox SMART attribute check)? In my case it lists RAW @ 0, Normalized @ 100, and Threshold @ 99, any idea's what that means in general terms? Thanks for any help you can give!

OMG I am so glad I read this post before flashing my G2s. There is a frightening history of bricked drives, even when people do everything right. It sounds best to wait a few days to see if intel has anything to say about these failed firmware updates. I doubt I have much to gain from the update anyway with my drives in RAID 0 on an ICH10R.

Glad to hear it, thanks for letting me know! Over on the Intel forums they are trying to narrow down what hardware combination is causing certain drives to have issues (since there seems to be a somewhat equal number of people having issues and not having issues).

Crikey this issue almost reminds me of Seagate and their firmwares ;)
It's a shame Intel didn't have any "Love" for us Gen1 owners.... even a slight upgrade would have been welcome. I still have my fingers crossed for the ellusive 8840 firmware update and ChristmasTRIMing.

I have had no issues. My only initial issue was with AHCI. It wasn't on originally before flashing, I was always in IDE, and after I flashed, I went to AHCI and got a BSOD. All I had to do was go back to IDE, then go enable the AHCI driver in W7. Then AHCI worked. Personally, I think the main issue here isn't the drives bricking, its BIOS issues with certain computers. I recommend anyone who has a BIOS with the option to switch to IDE, try that. There is no reason certain drives brick, while others run fine. As long as you flashed according to intel's instructions, the outcome should always be the same. I think it'll turn out that BIOS are to blame for all these issues, or that people haven't turned on the AHCI driver in W7, as was the case with me. TRIM works great in W7, definitely worth the time to upgrade firmware.

A HDDErase 3.3 wipe would not only "refresh it a bit", it would make it factory fresh and with optimal performance.. Give it a go, just make sure you use HDDErase with the SSD in "IDE - Compability mode"..

I aborted and tried again, still same error.. rebooted and i entered windows..installed the tool and this said i was updated... i tried to install intel sata driver IMSM_V8901023.. couldnt instal this tho..

I rebooted and changed IDE to AHCI.. tried twice but got bsod before i could enter windows.. swiched back to IDE...then i found out to change a setting in registry for windows to be able to install the sata driver.. after this i set AHCI in bios and i could boot fine in windows..

I didnt need a reinstall

That's exactely what their SSD Optimizer program does. You can even create a schedule so you won't have to run the command manually. :up:

It`s a damn shame that Intel decided not to include TRIM support for the Gen1 drives :mad: But seeing the trouble they got with implementing TRIM on Gen2 it may be for the best ;)

Shame on Intel for futt bucking the enthusiast and pioneers that paid big bucks for the Gen1 drives..

Intel has 2 SSD variants in terms of thickness, 7mm and 9.5mm. Which is suitable/meant for laptops.... :confused:

9,5 mm is the “normal” thickness used in laptops. However, if you buy the 9,5mm thick G2 you will be able to remove a black strip with 4 screws. What remains is the 7mm thick one. Look at pics of the G2 and it will be clear.
