Suggestion to create a "Xtreme Rumor Mill" section

Since I joined in 2005 I've noticed an increase of rumors and speculations floating around and especially clogging down the "Xtreme News" section, causing users to post a lot more spam and off-topic posts and the usual doubtful fud comments which gets both boring to read every day and in some cases creates offtopic discussions and even increases the possibility of flamewars, it simply just becomes a mess with both facts and rumors mixed IMO, especially when a thread was started by a rumor and then gets confirmation about it in the same thread so you have no choice but check out the threads even if you have no interest in the rumors.

So my suggestion to keep the forum more user & readerfriendly XS needs this "Xtreme Rumor Mill" section where "news" from for example fudzilla,the inquirer, semiaccurate, (EDIT: YouTube :eek:) and otherwise uncertain news should be posted and where you're yourself also allowed to speculate how much you want. I don't think limiting the "news" allowed to post is the way to go as rumors can cause very interesting discussions sometimes and also many funny things to laugh at and myself like to speculate and then see how close you were with the facts in your hand later on.

I decided to create a poll as well to get a glimpse what people thinks about this. Please comment about this people and especially mods & Charles. :)

But you can still continue to post any or all of the fud news if you want in this new section. The good in this would be that the people who likes reading "plausible" accurate rumors and people that only wants to read about facts are separated so you get rid of the undesired comments. Sounds perfect to me, but the normal suspects wont like it cos there number of hits via hidden links will go down

Yes it is a great idea, but how are you going to seperate fact from rumors? Who is going to be the judge of what is merely a rumor, or news of an upcoming product, specification, device, whatever? Then will you need to provide some sort of proof that what you are posting is truth? Then we have a verification process?
Look at fudzilla. Eighty percent of the trash shoveled there is actually true, or will be true. it is just the other twenty that messes it up. WHO and HOW will we separate it?

Rumors are still rumors until they are proven true so pre-launch stuff would go into rumor section unless the source is from the developer himself. So doesn't matter if it will be true or not.

What should really belong to News section are new product launches, reviews, interviews, statements from the developers or manufacturers, events etc. Most sites I know follow a similiar pattern, I don't see any problems here.

Anything from TheInq or its derivatives (BSN, FUD, SemiAcc...), should go there.
Why? because 80% of what they post is BS.

Day 1: "The sky is red"

I am perfectly okay with a separate rumors/news thread.

The only problem is... what some people consider a rumor others may consider news.

Also, the news section will most likely become a press release vault since thats basically the only thing that wouldnt be considered a rumor since its a valid source(the manufacturer).

Well I'd simply go by if the info comes straight from the manufacturer himself (then news) or if it comes from a random site (ofc fud, inq but also VR-Zone, Xbitlabs etc) before the official release for example, even if it's true I'd still place it in the rumor section. Many of the news posted in rumor section would probably turn to be true but that's the way to go IMO, not to try and valuate the reliability of the source, then we got a problem.

It's the before-release-speculation threads that are the biggest problem as of today and separating them like this would clean up the news section so much more. Especially these 6 month+ ahead speculation threads should definitely not be in the News section as we all know no matter the source, things can change a lot in a half year. :D

The only way for this to work well and not continue being a pain for the mods is to only allow the mods and reps to post in the news section, and then allow anyone to post in rumor mill.

I think it is a good idea, but your still not going to have flame-wars and fanboys. Your simply just moving it to a different section. :shrug:

Well I would say your opinion is biased since you work for INQ...

And no a forum is not a democracy. It has an owner and admins who set the rules. If they wanted to they could say "No more links to any INQ story EVER" if they wanted to and its perfectly within their rights...

All site like FUD do is make crap up and act like they are some high up website that knows everything and then all the people here that think o if it is on the web it must be true post it here. I voted yes, but it would mean much more work by the mods and will cause issues.

For instance, would news about the Fermi demo with the faked card go under rumor? Who defines what is real news and what is rumor?

I have a feeling that going by strict journalistic guidelines about 75% of the "news" articles posted on the web would fall under rumor/bias.

I vote that any reviewer or journalist that uses a violent term is biased and should not be posted as news (IE product A destroys, rapes kills, slaughters, crushes, annihilates product B is not news and just a piece of PR fluff)

EDIT: Poll should be fixed though. No and "I think its good the way it is" are the same thing, and splitting them is a yes BIASed poll. :p FYI

TPU has done a nice job by having set people in charge of posting the news, being careful to skirt the rumor sites and such. I imagine this would help stem the tide of offtopic and such in the news section. People may not have the opportunity to post everything they might like, but it would keep things more tame at any rate.

None of that "we heard from our sources some time ago who were at a conference with unknown sources from ati/nvidia that something is due to be released some time in the next hundred years."

Whether the rumour is true or not is irrelevant, it is still considered a rumour unless it is from a 100% credible source such as the manufacturer.

Then there would be almost no news being posted into the new News section, no tech news and no tech related research news, neither of those are 100% confirmed until after products are launched. No news on video games or new software/hardware until they are launched.
The "News" section would become a ghost town and completely pointless.

I wasn't saying that leaks should never be posted on Xtreme Systems, just that it should be posted in the Rumour Mill. Keep the News section as a news section with Press Release info etc.

Anyone who wants to read about leaks can do so in the Rumour Mill. I think it would be a great system.
