If you're curious about how that "voltage tweaking" really works, here's the deal: It enables users to raise GPU voltages from 1.15V to 1.35V and from 1.088V to 1.4V respectively, boosting GPU and memory clock performance from 850 / 725 MHz to 1035 / 1050 MHz and from 4800 / 4000 MHz to 5200 / 5200 MHz respectively. My card does 950MHz stable on core with default volts (1.15v) and default fan speed!

Most cards will do 1GHz easy with small volt bump!

I wouldn't call 1.15->1.35 a small bump, that's a 17% increase in voltage and a 37% increase in power

I'm up to preorder mine :D But no watercooling for me, not anymore. Was unlucky with my w/c setups (luckily no hw broken though). Guess I'll swap the original cooler for a aftermarket-cooler though, the original cooler of the HD4870 was unbearable.

the strain an hour of furmark would put on your card is :down: not sure if you know but your card has to be pretty stable to run vantage :yepp:

Furmark is a great way to brake the card.
I seen so many silly statements of stable stuff, some say for cpu that some programs are so great and when stable there, dang folding makes it crash.

Its worthless to set the card under furmark, as it isnt near any contexts the card normally operates under.
I guess you rma it even when its your own fault if it breakes?

Its just a belief people have about a particular testing enviroment, and furmark, isnt needed to run and frankly is dangerous as people might wanna try it and might ruin their new card.

People aren't saying furmark is the endallbeall of gpu stability.

But seriously... if it fails furmark thats the gpu designers fault. It should run software thrown at it... no software should be able to physically break a hardware facet of the gpu. If it does... thats incompetence of the designers.

Just because its not "normal" or standard doesn't mean its not right... folding by all means isn't a standard practice... neither is prime95.... or linpack...

Software... should not BREAK hardware... if hardware BREAKS from software... thats the hardwares fault not the softwares

the 5870/5850 are constantly monitoring the voltages regulators and downclock if they are close to their limits. Also the memory controller has error correction and with too high clocks and too many errors the bandwidth will just decrease due to retransmissions.

Due to the voltage monitoring there will be no software anymore that can put to much load on the regulators!

Initial OCCT & Furmark crashes were due to overheating VRMS in 4xxx series. It's been circumvented on the hardware level now for the 5xxx.

i concur, 58xx will not let you crash and burn under furmark, but i think it still uses some crazy power consumption. i think the anandtech review benched it, and showed power consumption. let me look

Exactly! :clap: There were times when I overclocked Prime didn't have a problem at all and it ran without a hassle 12 hours straight but Firefox kept crashing all the time.

Who knows. That would be great, but I doubt it. I bought a 5850 because I don't buy anything that costs way more than 200 Euro. I will rebuild my rig nearly form ground up for 580 Euro incl shipping (GFX, RAM, Mainboard, CPU).
I think the HD5850 will work great until more vRAM is needed. Therefore I don't feel like spending 100 Euro more on a HD-5870 ;)

Is Asus using the reference design? My Sapphire 5870's are arriving in Monday, so I was wondering if I can use the Asus tool after I change the Sapphire with an Asus firmware...
BTW, anybody owns the Asus 5870? If so, please send me the Asus firmware...

PCB would have nothing to do with it, at least in this case.
The shaders/TMUs are physically disabled on the silicon, so you will not be able to "unlock" them.

Edit- Also the parts that are disabled are either defective or cannot meet the bin requirements, clockspeed/TDP/voltage.

Furmark stresses your video card AND power supply beyond any actually used program.

I know that some in the "overclocking underground" are all about getting their system to run 300 hours straight while the system rubs its tummy and pats its head, in order to declare it stable...

While the rest of us get whatever we are using stable in the programs we actually use, not some mythical benchmarking tool.

Seriously if something isn't 100% stable in Furmark but has no problem in any games you have ever run or tested, then what is the point? The point of overclocking isn't just for bragging rights, I know it may seem like strange thought to some...but some of us use it to actually get more performance in the programs/games we use...

no, overclocking to 1ghz is the ambition, and it isnt as good as 5870 but the power within the card is enough even if 1ghz isnt reached.

Not going to happen according to what others have said previously in thread

Unlocking doesn't seem likely at all, ati has learned from its 9800se/9500pro days, haha. No recent generations have had a single success story, and plenty of other cards were made from the high end chip with parts of the gpu locked, 4830 being the most recent.

What I find more surprising is the memory clocks. So you can overclock the memory in the HD5850 to the same clocks that the memory in the HD5870 can reach? Are they using the same memory chips or what? Why then the stock HD5850 uses that memory at 4000MHz when HD5870 at 4800MHz? Only because HD5850 is cheaper so it has to be slower?:shakes:

Now, if both cards reach the same memory clocks (5200MHz), the HD5850 is becoming a more than interesting option. A core clock of 945MHz would compensate the lack of 10% of the SPs and TUs, giving the exact same shading and texturing power than a stock HD5870 but with more rasterizing (ROPs are the same so a higher clock would be more). So at this point (944/4800) it would be slightly better than a stock HD5870. It seems you can go further (1050/5200), allowing a HD5850 to have an ~10% performance more than a stock HD5870...

In fact, if both cards can overclock to the same clocks both core and memory, the only practical difference between the two is a 10% extra shading and texture units in the HD5870, hardly worth the difference in money (33%+ extra)

on TPU they have the device to show how much JUST the card takes at idle and load, it shows it zapping only about 5w more under load then a normal 4870, and just how they test all the cards i'm more leanient towards tpu's result

the 5870's memory is actually downclocked from either 5000/5200/5300 (one of those i forgot which though :ROTF: iirc, and the 5850 is actual 4000mhz memory chips :D

5870 should get a decent boost for memory just off the starting line anyway as its underclocked :)

probably downclocked and undervolted maybe? that could explain and make asus' claims valid, and I believe that he meant the 5850 mem seems to consistently clock to STOCK 5870 mem's speeds and that the 5850 should have just realesed at 4800mhz or something

Pretty sure they are the same, yeah. Why would they develop 2 physically different chips? They just hardware block shader units and stuff.
According to ASUS they OC the same.
I don't know if they will unlock. We haven't had video cards with disabled units for a while. Maybe they improved their locking techniques.
And regarding the VRAM... I am surprised manufacturers use new GDDR5 for 5850 instead of using those from 4870 and 4890 since it is fitting clock speed wise.

i wonder what the perf diference from 5850 and 5870 is if they are clocked to the same speeds...
i think it wont really matter to have some parts of the gpu locked... think about it, doubling the logic got them a 40% boost, so having slightly less than twice the logic is obviously not going to be a big impact... its probably 90% clockspeeds that make the diference between 5850 and 5870...

eithmmmm my guess is:

either there are no slower parts cause yields of these new chips is really good
or
amd buys so many of them that they pay about the same for one large batch of high bin parts as they would pay if theyd buy a mixed stock...
and using the same part always makes inventory management easier... :D

i dont think all memory will clock to 5200...
early 5850 samples will probably clock the same as 5870s since they are basically the same chips, but i wouldnt be surprised if 5850s later end up with the mem that doesnt clock that well, possibly even from other makers.

It would be awesome if you could do that, but I m not counting on it. I am *pending reviews* hoping that some decent oc'ing on non reference cooling is possible, and am looking at the pricepoint as a replacement for my 48701gb xfire. at 500$(x2 cards) its a pretty sweet deal for the theoretical performance, i guess we ll find out in a day or so( 29th) I know the 5870x2 should be close to the same price, but i just dont think it will be fitting in my case, looks like a monster! lol.

While furmark is definitely a "quick and dirty" way to test a card's stability, it puts a totally unrealistic strain. The best thing to do is to either play a game, or run an in-game benchmark at the highest settings.

Lets put it this way, Crysis with settings maxed out, playing the game from beginning to end, will not get you within 90% of what furmark puts your card through.

It looks as if the regular HD5850 is lacking the VT1165MF. Does this mean software-voltage-mods won't be possible on a regular HD5850?

The Asus 5850 will support voltage tweaking.. it says so right on the product description on asus's global website.. as for others... dunno

Just get the asus bios and flash your cards and voilla u can use the software they make i have done it with 4870-4870x2-4890-4770. with no problem!!!!

So after reading all the answer from each of you guys, If I plan to OC my Card, should I get 5850 or 5870? A lot of useful info in this thread. But info is from boath sides. Some guys recommend 5850 and some 5870. But What would be the Final Answer if you plan to OC the Card?

IMO, the Asus 5850. You won't be losing much performance vs. the 5870 really.

Buy what you need. Youre not wanting the card with the max overclock, youre wanting the card powerful enough to satisfy you. If an overclocked 5850 wouldn't be enough for you, then there's no point in buying it.

Also either card might be a dud overclocking card.

For my needs I know I need the 5870, and any overclock is just a bonus. Others might only need the 5850.

I sure *wouldn't* buy a 58x0 expecting a 38% overclock. And Asus' marketing may be incorrect that the 5850 has the volterra VT1165MF chip (its a new product, copy/paste could be an error on their website) and software may not be able to do voltage control for the 5850. I'd wait to confirm.

Can check hwbot for typical overclocks if you must (probably aren't many there yet).

Up to 1920x1200 a 5850 is good enough, add overclocking it can be a great value for the price/performance.
Asus need modified drivers for the software to work, and we dont know how much headroom and how the cards overclock yet.
1ghz with 5850 seems very good, I be happy to get 900mhz.
Not much software out for overclocking the 5800 series yet.

I got the 5850 as I overclock, I will run it on water, I be likely to get another later for crossfire and eyefinity.
Not rushing for that though.
5850 is great price/performance for me.

but they OC cos all those cards used volterra regs, but apaprently some people are saying the 5850 doesnt have those specific regs therefore cannot be software modded

(so people think asus have modded it to include thsoe v-regs :D..)

Personally, I can't wait to see the 24/7 results people get out of these cards.
