I figured I would give these new big WUs a try, they only work on Linux and OS/X and you have to have 8 cores. Not bad takes about 2.3 to 2.5 days and I get around 56,000 points for it. damn i am a super linux n00b and i can never get anything to work on linux. i am lucky that i got WCG running. every guide i have seen assumes you know all those cryptic linux scripts but i just want a os i know how to use. i will try this and see if i can get this thing workin.

Its pretty easy really with Ubuntu, you have to have 64 bit, I use 8.04 64 bit as it gets a few more points than the newer versions. After I install it I update it, System>Administration>Update Manager. Reboot as required, then open a terminal. Application>Accessories>Terminal. Type sudo apt-get install ia32-libs this will install the 32 bit libraries required.
Next go up to My Places then Home Folder, create a folder in there by right clicking/create folder give it a name. Next download the special big fah6 core required, if it ask you open or save select save and it will be put on the desktop. Right click on the file, properties>permissions, put a check in allow executing.
Download the 6.24 beta double click it and extract the mpiexe to the folder you created in my places, copy and past the fah6 file you modified the permissions on into the folder also.
Next just open a terminal and type cd <your folder name> without the <> that will change directory's to the directory name you entered. Then just type ./fah6 -smp 8 -bigadv and enter your info, you do have to have a pass key to get bonus points and do not select adv methods. When you want to close the terminal hit ctrl +c.
So what PPD does that work out to if you're cranking out a big WU every 2-3 days?

You could still run gpu with the I7 through linux, couldn't you for even more ppd? <<< disreguard; they do not recommend it as it could slow down the system and processor from reaching full potential
too many options now through 3 different DC progs. Its just a matter of time till WCG get gpu's setup on it

I entered in the advance settings under extra settings or something like that then entered it again when running the client in the start up command. :D The interrupted is when I shutdown the client changing teams, then again when I shut it down and deleted the A2 core to get the new 2.10 core...Quote:

I could be totally wrong on this, but based on the amount of process-to-process communication in F@H SMP, I doubt that even machines connected with multiple Gigabit connections would be able to communicate fast enough to effectively fold SMP.
But I do love to be proven wrong. ;)

I got my friend to try folding these big wu. For informational purposes his i7 at 3.6 ghz takes just under 34 minutes a percent under linux. He doesn't qualify for the bonus yet though.
i have noticed memory bandwidth makes a huge difference.
1070 cas6 it takes 45 minutes with my i7 3.76ghz
1400 cas8 it takes 36 minutes with i7 at 3.67ghz
No wonder, each of the 8 fah processes eats up over 400M right from the start. Whatever it's doing, it's memory intensive as hell. :eek:

i think i turned it in after 4 days so no credit:shrug:. i didnt let it run for a day and for some stupid reason my other machine didnt have the passkey in it so i didnt have 10 wu's done. i have been trying to run it in windows through virtualbox but it crashes when it uses a lot of memory but it crashes a lot anyways. linux is pissing me off and i dont really want it to run on my main rig. i think im just going to buy some more gpu's and wait for smp2 or something.Quote:

lol. when i run my gpu i get less ppd!:ROTF:my ETA in fahmon is only 7 hours from the deadline so i had to stop the gpu.
there are some 16 core opteron systems that are about as fast as road runners i7 @ 4.5 on foldingforum. you really have to go intel because gromacs utilizes sse. a 2p w3520 would dominate this thing for sure.Quote:

the desmond core scales much better with more atoms in the sim so it should be faster than A2 anyways.
For windows they definitely need to do something to speed it up compared to linux, I could take the same rig with a quad and put linux on it and get 800 more ppd than windows. It says "The main goal here was to make it MUCH easier to use" hopefully there is more to it than that. There is also a heck of boost in ppd in linux from A1 to A2 core...Quote:

Figuring on about $800 in sunk cost per quad GX2 rig, each rig ends up costing $80/month in electricity, or an additional $320/month. That's also an additional $1k/quad-gx2-rig over the course of a year.
I saw a calculation of about 200W output for a dual QC E5335 IBM server producing 17k PPD. Extrapolating that for a 25k PPD, let's say the output is 300W (vs 900W for a quad GX2 rig) which works out to about $30/rig/month in electricity.
If bonus points continue to be awarded, then 4 25K PPD rigs costing $120/month in electricity would start to pay off (when considering the new i7 investment - electricity savings) in only 3-4 months.
Does my math work out?
Not to mention the cooling on an i7 is much, much quieter than 4 GX2 fans set to 100% ;)

At 3.8GHz w/ just mobo, 6GB RAM, one HDD, and a basic PCI video card I'm pulling about 250W from the wall. WAY more eco friendly than the dual GX2s were (600-650W with the i7).
my points still arent registering. this is getting annoying. i would post logs of the upload but im in windows right now. everything is entered correctly. i didnt get any credit for the WU.
Overclocking is scaling linearly in terms of time savings. 10% overclock from 3.16GHz to 3.47GHz is also producing 10% better frame times. 32:35 down to 29:41. Hopefully the last 10% bump to 9.5x400 will be stable, and I'll finish with 27:00 frame times.
Kev, you should buy a Kill-a-Watt or similar to see at what point the power use moves off the linear too
