I went in to canadian tire in order to get some distilled water for my new water cooling loop.. (yes i have a killcoil), and was handed this jug, they said its the same thing....
what do you think?

It is not the same thing, but I really doubt it matters that much. There are quite a few debate threads on this. I say go for distilled unless it is hard to find, then just go for that stuff. I have run tap water in my loops before and it didn't cause any issues.
Meh, you can go tell Crappy Tire where they can put their "same thing". Deionized water is only free of ions - there are other impurities besides ions that can be in water, and distillation works to remove those. Besides, deionized water will re-ionize over time regardless, but distilled can help make sure certain crap doesn't wind up in the system in the first place. Hit up a Walmart or a drug store - distilled water can be had pretty cheaply by the gallon in N.America.
I thought they always distilled water before they deionized it so it was pretty much the same. I could have sworn I read that in the many debates on this subject.
There are a lot of grades of "Distilled" and "Deionized", and the higher grades get pretty similar to each other in composition. But at the low, cheap end, they're approaching it from different directions, you could say.

Fill it with DI water...
Stay with distilled. DI will pull ions from the metal. Since a radiator core tubi stypically something like 0.010 - 0.013" thick it doesn't take long for it to break through. Use distilled. DW is ionically balanced (with some ions removed) while DI is completely deionized.

For my 2 cents ... go with deionized if that's what you can find. You will be fine.
This is what I will end up doing as well since I'm in the UK and distilled water is almot impossible to find. (Except as quack medicine at very high prices.) The cheapest I found so far was "Hornby Live Steam Distilled Water" which is for model steam train engines. I've seen it for about £5 a litre which works out to about $30 a gallon!Quote:

How about RO (reverse osmosis) water. Can get it from my local pet shop to be used in fish tanks where you don't want any hardness/softness in your water. Its pretty cheap aswell, £2.50 for 25 litres.

Deionized and distilled are essentially the same, assuming both are good quality. Sort of different means to the same end.
Distilled water is made via distillation (duh), and Deionized is made via filtration. The end goal of both is to remove particulates from the water. Particulates can be ions ("sticky" atoms missing an electron), neutrally charged atoms, or colliods (neutral charged atomic clusters).
The problem is that when buying store-bought distilled water, you don't really know what you are getting. µS (microsiemens) is a measurement of conductivity. Proper quality distilled water should measure below 2µS. Most DI water will range somewhere between 0.5-5µS depending on the quality level the system is designed to provide.
In general, a high quality distilled water will be purer than average DI water, but this is not always the case. A person I spoke to about a product I am currently working on, said that he personally has measured store bought distilled water as high as 86µS (this is BAD quality distilled water). He contacted the manufacturer of the water and warned them that they were having a problem with their system, and a few weeks later he tested their water @ 25µS. He called once more, and on the next batch the purity was finally down to a reasonable spec of 3µS.
The only way to really guarantee the purity of the water you are using, regardless of what it says on the bottle, is to buy a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter and measure its conductivity yourself. For those of you in school your chem lab may have one you can use.
Twice distilled water is the way to go :)

Deionized does cause problems with taking ions from metals and if they're thin enough it can lead to corrosion through the metal.
I have tried searching for distilled water here in Denmark and the only thing I could find was Feser One Cooling Fluid at 8$ per liter... unless you have access to something at a school or something its just not accessable here in Denmark and apparently most of Europe.Quote:

I explained it in my last post but I will elaborate.
Distilled water is De-ionized water, but De-ionized water is not distilled water.
"Distilled" just refers to the process by which the water is purified.
Good quality De-ionized water has less particulates and free ions than poor quality Distilled water. Good quality distilled water is just as De-ionized as the same quality De-ionized water that was not purified by distillation, but by filtration. Ions are typically removed chemically (by bonding with another chemical such as occurs in a water softener that uses salt pellets), and then the bonded ions that now have formed neutrally charged particulates are filtered out via reverse osmosis and other filtration methods. None of that is required for distilled water, because no ions or colloids travel in the water vapor in a proper distillation system.
Ions are atoms missing an outer electron, so they have a positive charge. Impure water is what can cause trouble, because the ions sometimes can either form a covalent bond with the metals, or they can steal an electron from the metals thereby creating a metal ion. This isn't the rule though. It is all a probability.
Generally what happens is that if your loop has a neutral charge, water will not cause any trouble whether it contains ions or not. If it has a negative charge, whatever ions are present in the coolant will bond to the negatively charged areas and/or steal electrons until equilibrium is reached.
In summary, either ultra-pure distilled or completely De-ionized water are best for your loop, because the ions themselves are what cause the trouble. Pure water by itself is neutrally charged, and your loop will only dump ions into it if the loop has an imbalanced charge.
These processes are also all governed by the pH of the coolant, which is why it is important to try and maintain the most neutral pH possible in your coolant.
Why are there two types of purified water like this? Because in industrial settings, Distilled water can become very costly due to the energy required for the distillation process. De-ionization (filtration) takes much less power, and produces higher volumes of water at a lower cost. Neither is necessarily more pure than the other, it all depends on the quality of the processing.
mabyboi, just go get distilled from food basic or walmart, etc. it's a dollar per gallon.
I enjoy theoretical debates as much as anyone, but in this case the empirical evidence is pretty clear: deionized water has been used successfully by a large number of people for years.
In many countries, including mine, distilled water is hard to find. That's why our national water cooling forum recommends using deionized water, and a lot of people, including myself, have run deionized for years without any problems. I don't know of one single case where using deionized water has caused any trouble. Maybe there is some really low quality deionized out there that could cause trouble, but I've never heard of it.

The bottom line is, if you buy store bought distilled or cheapo De-Ionized water, you don't really know what you are getting unless you check it for purity. Some store bought distilled water can be really dirty, and same goes for cheapo De-Ionized from auto parts places, etc.
Does it really matter? Probably not. But if one is going to get that involved in the purity of their water, and don't want to fork out $75 for a water tester, the only way to be reasonably sure of EXACTLY what you are getting without measuring it yourself is to buy ASTM graded water from a chemical supplier.

Good quality deionised is FINE. any one who says anything different is very misinformed. If deionised was impure, they would not use it in the pharmacuitical and food industries.
Distilled water of the same quality is JUST as good.
In summery - you can use distilled OR ionised, whatever you can get your hands on will do just fine!
If you stil confused, JUST BUY PRE MIXED FLUIDS. I have used feser orange pre mix for over a year now, no problems, my brother has used both the BLUE and RED premix with no issues either.

When people deionize, some type of filtration is used. Most cases its gonna be a distilled + RO if the water is priced high. Deionized will add more to the tag.

I never said that the water he bought wasn't clean, I said that there was no way to truly know unless it was measured. From personal experience, some of the "pure" water that you buy at the store as distilled or from auto parts as deionized for filling batteries is garbage. In high volume settings, "point of use" systems, Distilled is MUCH MUCH MUCH more expensive to make than Deionized. Not only is there an energy cost to boil/vaporize the water, but the distillation systems must constantly be shut down and cleaned of residues. Just because Deionized is sold to the public for more doesn't mean that it costs more to make. That is the reason we use a Deionization system for our Laboratory grade water here at my work, as opposed to a distillation system.
Distilled can get more economical in factory production, but there still is a massive energy cost involved. That is just what it takes to evap the water, no way around it.
This isn't "I kinda sorta think I know what I'm talking about" this is "I KNOW what I'm talking about". :)
De-ionized water does not need to also be distilled to be free of minerals, I know this first hand. A deionization system chemically traps and neutralizes the minerals in a treated filter medium or by catalyzation and subsequent filtration, distillation does the same thing (remove minerals and impurities), but by evaporation. Distillation is just the easiest way to achieve super-high purity water, which is why it is so widely used.
That is why I said, distilled water IS De-ionized, because it has had its ions removed but De-ionized water has not necessarily been distilled. As I said in my first post, different means to the same end.
I personally oversaw the installation of our Deionization system, and check the water quality weekly to make sure it is suitable for our processes. My job depends on making sure our water is pure. If there were any notable amount of minerals in it, it wouldn't work for us. ;)
edit: I just wanted to add, I'm not trying to be some jerkoff know-it-all here, it's just that I have been forced to learn about this through years of experience at my work and also through research on a product I've been working on lately, so I know quite a lot about it. That is all. :)
I live in Finland and the only place I've seen you can buy distilled is the pharmacy for like 10 Euro / liter.
I can only find "battery water" and "purified water" wich I belive is de ionized.
It says 10us on the bottle, is that okay for a watercooling loop with nothing but silver?
Or should I look for something else?

I recently purchased six brands of distilled here in the states for an experiement, the best one measured 0.3µS, and the worst was 22.5µS.
The average was somewhere between 0.5µS and 1.5µS.
To be honest, < 10µS is still reasonably clean. It isn't completely ideal, but is plenty clean enough to not cause trouble in your loop. :)

Once the water - distilled/de-ionized/pharmacy/battery/etc. hits your loop, it's going to no longer be "pure," as it's going to absorb ions from the metals in the loop. The potential for more expensive water to save you from damage if you get a leak is (in my opinion) nil.Quote:

I can't tell from their site whether they're also doing DI, sounds like they're only doing distilled.
But it's down to a good level, and at least you can have more certainty over what you're getting.

i dont see a point using deionized water since it will take the ions from the copper and/or silver if you have some in there. If it leaks, it will still damage your components. I just run distilled all the way with a silver coil. No additives of any kind. Dont use tap though! I did that my first time I filled it and got white crusting in the res and white gunk on the tubes from the minerals and chemicals in there.
Both distilled and deionized are deficient in ions and both are going to take ions from the copper and/or silver. Quickly at first, then as water gains ions over few weeks, neither will be deionized any more, and in time leaching of ions slows to point of no faster than mineral water. Your not supposed to run continually fresh either distilled or deionized water through copper pipes as after many years and millions of gallons it can erode the copper. However, there is nothing wrong with circulating forever the same distilled or deionized water through, since after a few weeks, neither will be deionized anymore, and neither will be any more harmful than natural mineral water, ie you just turned your deionized water into mineral water.

I had a ChemE friend going for his doctors who runs a lab that produces pure deionized water with very expensive machines. At first, I wanted to use this water in my loop but then he told me that I should not use this water in anything that contains metals since it will harm them. Thats when I went with distilled. My main goal was to avoid buildup of unwanted organisms and precipitate of any kind. It has been almost a year now and all I have is a silver coil and distilled water. Besides, even if you can buy deionized water, it will be much more expensive than distilled and in the end, they both end up no better than tap water.

Most of what I've read suggests that DI is generally a cheaper process than distillation.
But I totally get how metallic ions will eventually equalise to the point that there's little difference.
Other than distilled having no colloids or micro-biotic material (if done well)...

@Mabyboi Just come to my place with a big jug. I have a high end R/O system that makes it better then distilled. I won't charge you a dime! Other then that just go to your local Shoppers Drug Mart bro. They have distilled there dirt cheap in 4 litre containers. Cost something like $2.75 or something like that.

No need to be confused. I have a condition in which I am very sensitive to Fluoride. Living in a city in which they fluoridate the water can make it challenging for a person like me to stay alive. Natural calcium fluoride is okay but the stuff they use in municipal waters is extremely toxic and I am sensitive to it. The distillation process does not get rid of most chemicals as it evaporates with it. However it is great for cleaning out minerals as that is left behind. My R/O system not only takes out minerals but chemicals, hormones and even radioactive material such as radium and tritium. This is why I made the claim I did. Read up on each process and see which one's are best for making the purest of water. Now what happens in the end is funny too because the water then tries to reestablish it's minerals to maintain it's Ph balance. It's a good study. Using very pure water you are going to have a negligible amount less of residual but a LOT of aggressivity more toward metals.
Distilled + silver coil is NOT enough,anticorrosion is needed,cause in watercooling loops there is not only corrosion due to mixing metals but also oxydation due to the aggressivity of the pure water.
And once you use anticorrosion you can also throw your silver coil since anticorrosion are also anti algae/fungi. At that point i'd prefer deionized over dstilled since the only up of distilled is that it contains less microorganisms but the down is that steam purified water contains much more easily impurities (like chemicals) that are easily eliminated with deionized.
DOn't want to seem arrogant but in watercooling loops it is so popoular this assumption that distilled + silver coil is enough....but as someone else also stated before, pure water (like one that is around the conductivity values that you were talkingabout) is going to be exceptionally aggressive toward metals.

Lets start with looking for the water with the lowest TDS levels. Your country's government sets minimum standards for all forms of water that must be met in order for it to be sold with that particular labeling on it. These standards, while not exactly the same in every country, are relatively close in most of them. Distilled is going to be the most recommended with DI not far behind, looking for a producer of either that can do it better than everyone else in your area is not really necessary as it won't make much difference after a while in the loop. I applaud your willingness to go the extra mile in your research (it's rare to see these days) but, your over thinking things a bit.
Here's the difference:
Distilled water: Water is boiled and then recondensed. The recondensed water is free of any impurities that are NOT transferrable in steam. Many chemicals will transfer through steam, but the vast majority of what most people care about will be removed by boiling water. If you had ammonia and water mixed together you could not separate the ammonia from the water with this process. Think about all the "stuff" that would collect in the bottom of a pot of water on your stove if you boiled off all of the water. All that stuff is removed and you are left with the "cleaner" distilled water.
Deionized water: The water is passed through an ion exchanger that removes hydroxide and hydronium molecules. The quantity of hydroxide and hydronium determines your pH. Often deionized water is also distilled, but there is no requirement. The reason is that distilling and deionizing the water is often cheaper than straight deionization. Basically, Deionized water should have a very close neutral pH. Ammonia would be filtered out by the deionization process. However, any dissolved solids in your water might not be filtered out by deionization. Keep in mind that a neutral pH may not be the best pH to minimize corrosion. Only metallurgical engineers could really comment on the best pH for a given material. I am sure that the information we IT geeks would want to minimize corrosion is not available to us in any form.
Purified water: Purified water is water that has gone through some form of physical filters to remove impurities. This could be reverse osmosis or other form.
Each type of water has a different intended goal. Distilled and purified water tries to remove dissolved solids(but with 2 different processes) and deionized water tries to establish a neutral pH.
So which is better for your system? Honestly, I'd go with whatever I can get the easiest/cheapest between deionized water and distilled. Purified water doesn't really have any requirement for maximum amount of solids that can still be dissolved in solution.:yepp:

No municipal water in the world (no matter how advanced), is going to be in the same state it was when 1st distilled*, by the time it reaches one's tap.
So I can totally see how in your experience, R/O offers a substantial & measurable improvement over tap water.
So what sort of particulate measurements are you getting once done?
*one of the major plants where I live, actually uses R/O (amongst a few processes) to purify water before sending-it-out.
