Project "True 4x4"

Hey fellas,

I am sure everybody remembers AMDs "4x4" marketing paper launch back in the day, where they would have two Dual-Core Athlon FX Processors on a DP mainboard, sort of like what Intel did with SKulltrail a few years later.
They called it "4x4" because it had 4 cores, but it sucked really bad (mediocre performance, insane cost and extremely high power draw) and few people ever bought one. I always thought that crappy thing didn't deserve the name "4x4", because it was 4 cores but only 2 procs, so what's the second "4" stand for? :rolleyes: :shrug:

Soo.. I present to you: My first dedicated AMD cruncher in ages, and a true 4x4 rig - 4 CPUs x 4 cores each - 16 real Cores on a single system. :cool:

What's in it, you may ask? Here's the specs.

CPUs: 4x AMD Opteron 8347 HE (High Efficiency, sort of like LV and ULV Intel Xeons), 1,9Ghz 65nm Quadcore, Codenamed "Barcelona". 55W ACP, 68W TDP, 2MB of L3 made for up to 8-way servers based on the ancient socket F (LGA1207)

Unfortunately they are not all perfectly matched, despite the seller's promise they would be :shakes:

Since they are pretty close in manuf. date and have the same stepping (AAAWB) it should work with no problems.

Motherboard: Supermicro H8QME-2

Ram: 4x1GB Kingston DDR2-800 Reg ECC (minimum ram config for 4 CPUs :rofl: )

PSU: Enermax Pro82+ 385W :eek: :p:

GFX: onboard crap

HDD: Savvio 15k.1 2,5" 73GB SAS drive (still got one lying around doing nothing)

Case: uhm yeah.. no normal case can fit this monster, it's 16x13" :shocked: SOlution: Sawed-off CS601 mobo tray with PSU-bracket mod known already from the Dual Gainsy thread :wasntme:

Will it work? I don't know yet... CPU coolers are due to arrive tomorrow.

Awesome options for a SM Quad Socket if you ask me. A LOT of ram settings, and even Vcore up to 1,45V (can it be true?). Only HTT ref. clock options missing, but that should be doable by software.

I'm excited to see this one progress. I expect some Cinebench runs. :)

Hey Particle,

I'm afraid it's gonna suck at CB10, because (as you may have noticed) the program is very poorly optimized for more than 8 threads. Probably not even 20k, but that also depends on whether I can OC it or not.
Got any clue as to how I might be able to raise HTT clocks on this one? :)

what a beastly mobo! good to see use of energy efficient cpus. gainestown isnt going to cut the mustard in this area. you definitely need more ram but awesome cruncher none the less.

A Dual Gainestown is the most energy-efficient rig you can build at the moment. Nothing can match it in terms of PPD per Watt.

Also more than 4GB of Ram is totally useless for a dedicated cruncher.. 4x512MB would have cut it too, but I had 2x1GB lying around so I got another 2. It's only running single channel, but like we found out a hundred times already, this doesn't affect WCG in the slightest.

i havnt seen any reviews on how well k10 and nehalem perform in WCG but k10 is designed around efficiency. nehalem's pipeline is a lot longer than AMD's and it breaks down instructions into a lot more microops. although nehalem will probly win in energy efficiency in floating point any day i guess.

Well, my Dual X5570 does close to 50k/d at 16*3Ghz in WCG at 275W from the wall. And these are early B0 step CPUs, current D0 use even less. As we know from the Phenom II X4 crunchers, they do around 13-14k/d at 3Ghz. Even if we assume that a Dual Shanghai at 3Ghz will take less than 250W (which is unlikely), it still would have no way of competing with the Gainestown.

Now as to Istanbul, I have no idea. If particle could provide some numbers here that would be helpful, probably gets pretty close to the Gainstown in terms of efficiency.

By the way, this build is projected to do 32-34k/d at around 300-320W from the wall. So not really that efficient, but given its age that's still not bad.

Hard to say since I have the client paused for a lot each day while I game, but I'd say 30K/day for 12x2508 is doable. As for getting HTT up, yeah, that shouldn't be a problem. Your maximum stable HT ref clock will probably be your limiting factor.

I think you need a server OS for this thing, dont know how much is free when you boot into the OS. But 512Mb for a quad sounds low, really low.

Hm yeah, 4x512MB would have been a little close. However 4x1GB is plenty. I'm gonna use XSOS, as always, which is Server 08 Datacenter. Only needs a couple hundred MB to run, and then maybe 16*100MB for 16 threads WCG. I won't be over 2GB total usage.

@Particle: Sounds great, what tools do I need to overclock HTT? Does SetFSB work? Or ntune? What do you use on your Dual hexie? :)

It did, so I can install the Scythe backlate with AM2 retention bracket along with the coolers tomorrow (otherwise I would have had to use Socket F coolers which I didn't find for cheap).

@OldChap: Cheap ass Coolermaster ones that cost 3€ a pop :ROTF:

But wouldn't it be cheaper to just build multiple single-socket machines? For something that parallels as well as WCG... is there even a point to forcing it all into the same system?

As soon as you go more than one socket, price/performance skyrockets...

Well, I got a really good price on this one, and I can re-sell it for more than I paid at any time. Plus it's quad socket :D

As for the single vs. dual debate, well yes, initial cost is higher with the Dualies, but they use less W per PPD. Which in the end is the more important thing if you run a lot of them 24/7 and have high utility prices like we Europeans do.

And I meant WCG crunching, of course ;)

And yes, bragging rights is always a bonus of shoving it all in one machine. :D

It's also easier to place less machines, unless you put them all in a 19" rack of course.. which I don't really like.
I don't think I can brag about the performance of this one, it's more because I've always wanted to have a quad socket again since I sold my Quad P3.. it just looks so awesome :D :D

I guess you'd have to be pretty messed up to buy something based on the fact that is has moar sockets, right? :D :shrug:

Not really...

In some of the programming I do (and I'm not alone), I need to see how well a piece of code will scale to many cores.
This is especially the case when writing code for rack servers (say a 16 x Dunnington for example), but you only have physical access to a not-so-awesome computer.

In such cases, I want as many cores as possible - I don't care how slow they are, just as many as I can get... and as much ram as possible.

My workstation falls in that category. I use it for testing code that might be run on massive machines...So my "puny" 8 cores is hardly enough. :rofl:

For that matter... the "puny" 64 GB of ram is insufficient too... but at the time, that's the most that could've been shoved into a single machine without breaking the bank.

Well, it's really going to come down to trial and error, jcool. While nVidia's Performance Tools or whatever do seem to work on this chipset, it's far from perfect. You have a better chance than I since you're using Tyan gear, however. On my Supermicro, once the nVidia crap has been installed I get fun system behaviors like hard lockup when a new user profile is created (ie: first time a user account logs in after the software is installed if they hadn't logged in already). It also has a tendency to lock up for no good reason like if one clicks on the performance profile tab. Ultimately, it should work though. You'll just have to tip toe through it when using it.

You also have the possibility of editing addresses via SMBus directly, which has come in handy for me for things like NB multiplier. Don't worry, we'll get you figured out.

that is the attitude and the way of seeing it ( you´ve got it crystal clear, you could afford it and you can have fun with it, what else could, you ask life for :D ).

one of the things that pulls me back is that once accomplished I am afraid of saying :banana::banana::banana::banana: this windows is still slow ( kinda deception like the first time you overclock a lady, but with the hope and the conviction you overclock the second one :D )

dude I know you are using LV cpus but is it safe to use the psu you are using? my question comes as I´ve seen a tyan chassis containing 4x600 watters psu ( that might be a bit overkill as it also had the daughter but 385 seems a bit small.. I am just guesstimating and crossing my fingers also :) )

Yeah it's small, but I don't have anything else lying around atm, also it's a very efficient little PSU.. hoping for 300W-ish from the wall, which it can handle easily (up to 450W from the wall is no problem, and I won't be over 350W).

Well it won't have a GFX hogging 12V lines anyway. I remember I ran a QX6700 B0 from a 350W Antec ... (until it went bang lol) But ran well. 220W from wall IIRC.

This must seem huge when a person is starring at it in person. J, this is a monster build. Would love to see it OC. Sure you're not gonna smoke that Enermax with this?

Yeah, pretty sure. I have run worse, tho I am a little worried about the armada of adapters I'll need to use. 4pin Molex to 4pin 12V to 8pin 12V :D
Think one Molex can take the current of an 8pin 12V? We'll soon find out xD

Depends on the game, some don't mind too much, while others kick up a huge stink. I usually suspend WCG while I'm gaming, it's only when I forget to suspend it do I find out if the game minds or not :p:

The only game I've had an issue with WCG running in the background is - wait for it - age of empires 2 :lol:
Seriously, when the game gets busy it begins lagging sooo bad. Pause WCG and it runs perfectly. Doesn't share the CPU too well, unlike most other games out there.

Same here. If I don't pause WCG, game performance is significantly lower. That's with 12 CPUs.

Most Source Engine games (Half Life 2, Counter Strike, TF2, Left4Dead) start stuttering with WCG, a lot of Unreal Engine 3 games will CTD randomly, Mass Effect crashes, CoD games get a little stuttery (but still playable), Oblivion and Fallout 3 get even more unstable. On the other hand, games like Assassin's Creed and a few others will work fine. It's really just trial and error, though, and varies from system to system, as I know a few people here who have no trouble playing some of the above games with WCG running.

on my tricore my fps is topped out all the time.

Hmm, I noticed that Far Cry 2 doesn't play well with WCG but it's a horrible game so who cares.

No need, jcool. Just plop the coolers on top with some paste. I ran my dual 2GHz Barcelona that way for quite some time until I got proper heatsinks. Your LV 1.9s should do fine. I was just using AM2 box coolers. :)

Haha great, the coolers are too big, they don't fit next to each other... Thankfully you can remove the fan (92mm) and put a standard 80x80x25mm fan on top (the HS fits, barely). Zip ties in place on CPU 1 & 2, will try with "only" 2 for starters. Retention brackets should arrive tomorrow anyways.

Post 1 has been updated.. IT WORKS :D

Installing the OS as we speak.

Before you get too far, test with all 4 CPUs. :) I got all excited when my board worked with one socket but it ended up having a broken second socket.

Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding a HDD to install on. IDE won't work because the mobo has no IDE and there are no 64bit drivers for the Promise Ultra100TX2 IDE card.
And for some stupid reason, Server 08 won't take the TX2650's driver (for the SAS disk).

Awesome. Can't wait for you to get an HDD in this thing to see how it performs.

IDK if anyone posted this before, but the second "4" was for 4 PCI-E x16 slots, iirc. The idea was 4 graphics cards and four cores.

Which, by the way, I am having trouble finding the right OS for. I thought XSOS would work since it's based on Server 08, but somehow it doesn't. Only shows 2 CPUs/8 threads in taskmgr, CPU-Z and that summary screen. However 16 cores are installed in device manager, and the bios recognizes all cores as well. Also all 4 GB of ram are working which also means all 4 CPus must be active (since it's 1GB per CPU IMC).

I've had enough computer time for today to almost make my eyes go squared anyways, so I'll go and fetch some Server 03 or Server 08 distro tomorrow to try again. No real use running any benches with just 2 CPUs...

Yeah, grab a Server 03/08 disc. If you're a student in the USA, you can download it and get a free key for them. Oh and I like and agree with your "true 4x4" statement. The only thing AMD did what that old platform was fail miserably. They would have been better off gluing two Brisbanes together and dealing with communications over the HT bus. They literally lost millions because of marketing stupidity. And 4x4 was even worse; now you HAVE to communicate thru HT plus the motherboard was a failure.

i believe they fixed that with istanbul(or at least improved it). if you want to talk about poor scaling than we can talk about core 2.

Well, it's a good thing I bought the Opteron HE then, at least the little Enermax seems to be able to hold the rig fine.

After a lot of trouble getting Win Server 08 to finally accept the freaking SAS Controller, here it is...

178W Windows idle, 324W BOINC, from the wall.

4 CPUs, 6 fans, 4 sticks of ram, SAS controller + HDD (~20W for storage subsystem), and an optical drive.

Not bad considering the CPU count, but not really low either.. about what I expected.

are you running them at just 1ghz. what a shame. is power measured with 1 or 1.9ghz?

Under load the CPUs will be clocked at 1.9 GHz, haschioz.

I googled your PLL. No search results whatsoever. :shrug: Pity. I see clockgen form CPUID only does ICS9 and a few others. I wonder is there anything you can do in terms of a pin mod?

When my family was still running a pentium 3, I sent him an email with my PLL controller number and he put a few together. I never put effort into it cause I changed to bios modding, but it might still be worth a shot.

Try searching for ICS8731 instead, CY01L is just package related information ;)
Here's the link to the datasheet.

Sadly it would appear there's no direct I2C/SMBUS control on it (just basic pin driving, which would mean hardmods could be possible), so it must either be controlled through the chipset or other on-board logic. Are there any other chips that look like a PLL? There's the potential that this chip is being used as a buffer, given there are 4 cpus to feed with a clock and all.

None that I could find, no. But I will re-check tomorrow...

Chipset should be able to control it via nTune. The problem is just going to be getting nTune to work since nVidia isn't exactly first rate at software. heh No worries, we must get something figured out. :)

Yeah I was pretty surprised too, especially since I'm still in single channel mode which probably hurts performance considerably (except for WCG).

It will freeze upon the first install - this is normal") :rofl: :clap: a lot of playing around with various ntune versions and their freaking driver files + a huge amount of my usual luck when it comes to hardware, here it is...

2,4Ghz ain't happening, the motherboard can't take it (thanks again to particle for helping). It's the same with his setup really, ~225 HTT is the limit on those Nvidia chipsets.

Not bad tho, it beats all my Intels (even tho the X5450 would probably be faster if I had Server 08 on it...) and is currently ranked #40 for the 1024M on hwbot :)

However, I may have a problem with the setup. Some benches are excrutiatingly slow, for example Cinebench performs very poorly. I have traced the problem to the memory subsystem having extreme latency issues (should be 5x less latency) and low throughput (should be 2x as high)

ballparking: mobo: 350
cpus: 200
memories : 25 bucks per 2gb module ( he said he already had some ).. but he used 1gb sticks .
hdd: using one he had.
psu the same ( an antec which delivers 385w IIRC).

@j: have you seen any significant increase in electric power from the wall after the overclocking? how does it handle file compressing ? ( gzip, winrar, 7z or any of those)

Well yeah.. about 500€ in total, not counting the PSU, HDD, and "case"

Haven't measured yet, seems like HTT 220 won't pass prime anyway.. whether it's stable enough for crunching, we'll see. File compression will probably be slow due to the memory issue.

What's this things output look like? (no matter what it definately has the wow factor.)

WCG has been running pretty crappy so far, it took 24 hours for some HFCC WUs. Like I said, something is definitely off.
