Freezone Elite x2 Build

Recent Purchase 2 Freezone Elites: Total $450

I’m modifying my current build (Lian-Li V1200) and adding 2 Freezone Elite Coolit systems... Currently I'm using 2 radiators (DD Black Ice 360 & 120) to cool my QX9770 @ 4.2GHz, 8800 Ultra OC’d, North/South Bridge & Both Mosfets…. My current temps are 37-40 Idle & 59-62 under full load… I’m going to remove the 120 and keep the 360 to assist with cooling before it reaches the TEC…

Note: Not looking for subzero temps.... Just looking for 10-15C drop at full load... The Rad should keep me above ambient temps and prevent condensation at idle.... Will post pictures and results once the install has been completed…

Numerous basic issues with this

1 You'll be mixing metals with the Aluminium of the Freezone and copper for everything else

2 Man with all those blocks your flow rate is going to be horrible !

3 Why bother having the Freezones if you've got a normal rad inline with it. Any possible gain from the Freezones will be lost because of the Inline rad heating the water up

4 your recycling the air. You have the rads blowing into the case .. so you blowing hot air in .. then your taking part of this and trying to use it to cooler your freezones ? thats no good

I appreciate all of your inputs and I’m sure it’ll take a few weeks to work out all of the bugs… To most this is a waste of money and time, but it’s a hobby... If the results suck then Ooo well lesson learned - At least I had fun doing it…

1. I've been mixing copper & aluminum for about 2 years now with no issues... I'm using a commercial coolant that prevents corrosion ... It works about the same as most of the other coolants sold today for computers…

2. I'm not using the Coolit pumps... Most likely I'm going to use my 2 Alphacool Laing DDC-Pumps.... IMO this is sufficient enough to maintain good pressure / flow…

3. Very good point... I'm going to try it with and without the radiators... I’m curious to see how much of a difference this will make…

4. I've never had any real issues with my current setup... The Lain-Li case is mesh which allows for excellent ventilation...

wow, can't wait to see how it turns out! Pictures too! I imagine its going to get pretty crowded. It always looks better on sketch.

Why lose possible performance? Sure, you fixed the corrosion problem, but now with the antifreeze stuff, you're now ruining performance. (slightly though)

Okay, I hate being the negative Nancy but IMHO these Coolit units are a waste of time and money. Hopefully you meet success but wouldn't it be better to go with a dual TEC sandwich? Condensation really isn't an issue anymore if you follow one of the guides in this forum. Personally I've been running up to -15c for over a year without any issues.

So it looks like you already purchased the units. You will possibly need a temperature controller to prevent condensation @ dew point. I say possibly because those TECs are so small it might not ever pull the temp down that low to even see a difference over regular water cooling.

My parts finally started to arrive and as you can see both freezones fit nicely.... I only really had one issue so far… For some reason my 2 yr old 750w power supply kicked the bucket while I was testing the chillers… It’s possible that it couldn’t handle both freezones, pumps, graphic cards, fans, CPU, ECT…. It’s a good thing I decided to purchase a new one… I was going to use my old P5E3 Deluxe MB w/ the QX9770 setup but I decided to use my new EVGA Classified w/ i7-920 instead… I also purchased a nice water block to cool down the NB, SB & Mosfet…

Hi Folks, Barry here w/ CoolIT... I am loving what is going on here. Hybrid loops may be the way forward... if you end up with results anything like some of the guys on our forums are getting adding a single 240 rad in line w/ their Elite.. you are going to be a happy man :)

Yeah, all of our products have always mixed aluminum (blue FHE's) w/ Copper (CPU Blocks) without ever having any issues w/ galvanic corrosion or algae. Its all about the coolant blend. Phosphates baby... phosphates!

Anyways, really excited to see how this turns out.. i'll link this in a couple of other forums too. Get to work! ;)

Please dont do that .. if you get better temps with adding a rad in line it's time to bin the CoolIT products and go straight W/Cing

If they used stronger TECs or a design that gave really good OCs we wouldn't be haters.:D

But still, negativity aside. I'm interested in the final results. I can see the argument about adding a dual 120 in the loop. But for what price?

Your missing a fundamental point here they can't use stronger TEC's and consequently give really good OC's because they are limited by the market.

The market demands ease of use which for most Joe Bloggs computer owners means it works in their system without to much faffing about and extra hardware.
This ultimately binds them to the molex plug and it's 8amp current limit they have to run a pump, controls, TEC's etc all within the confines of 8amps.
What nobody seems to understand is that on the face of it....design wise they have very amazing units but they will NEVER win any awards for cooling levels due to the limitations of the cooling of the TEC's.
TEC-wise they have been heavily undervolted and have obviously undergone enormous amounts of testing to keep within their amperage limit and TEC-wise they done an incredible job to get where they are.
These units really are at the cusp perfect design within 8amps and that is why people have so many problems attempting to MOD them for extra performance - sticking to molex and the 8amps limit it really isn't that possible.
The only way to improve them measurably is to move the TEC's to separate power(they are 15.6v units after all.) and basically dismantle the whole unit - so why start from one in the first place ????
Sell the unit to someone - in one piece - who needs that level of technology and start fresh with bigger TEC's to start with - it will save a heck of a lot of time, money and frustration.
Take the Guy who had two boreas - that was a long winded project and ultimately cost MORE than top rated custom phase unit !! What for ????
If he wanted really cold he could of just bought Phase....If he did'nt want it really cold (and I can't remember the particulars...) and I hope he wasn't one of those who did'nt want to go below dew point, he spent far in excess of money, time and effort necessary for such results.

Their ultimate problem .. is they dont want to TEC cool "properly" cos it costs to much to do so .. i mean look at the boares on frozenCPU it's like 500 dollars or something and you really need two of them these days. so the cost of a proper single unit would cost train loads.

I agree. And why would u need to put a rad inline with the chiller? wouldnt this just put ambient heat into the loop? im not too familiar with coolit, correct me if im wrong.

By the way I actually respect coolit. As they have been the first and last company to fully compared TEC and their advantages when using multiple ones and under volting them. It just time they came up with a new product to deal with the high out put CPUs we have now

You are correct. Putting a rad inline completely defeats the point and any advantage you could possible get from having a TEC Chiller

Now the Guy from Coolit suggested putting a RAD in line because he knows their product is unable to cool a modern CPU effectively (sub ambient or = to it) So you can get lower temps with an inline rad because the fluid temp is already over ambient.

Guess I need some sensitivity training…. The haters part was a joke / a little added sarcasm… Not a personal attack against those who decide not to use the mentioned products… Again I apologize to all the offended members…

As I stated before this is a hobby not a money maker (Not setting records here)… Waste of money – probably yes but who really hasn’t wasted few bills before… I’ve never seen a customized computer that held its value…. Personally I’m going for the clean look with everything mounted inside the case… If I had the tools / equipment necessary to build a proper TEC cooling system I would attempt to build my own… Unfortunately tools, equipment & materials cost money too… (My tools are limited / Houses are very small where I live)

Since you have 2 units i might cool well . it will be interesting to see... im probably one of the biggest money wasters here so dont worry about that to much .. i built a quad water to water TEC chiller thats just lying around.. It worked so i got board of it after 10 minutes. Now i've built a 62mm TEC block thats finished and now sitting on the bench too. I just like playing with things rather than anything else.

I agree… I’ll spend days, weeks, and months working on projects and when they’re finished I get board of them really quick…. So I set them aside and start something else….

Today: Modded faceplate for the bottom freezone... I’ll post more pictures when it’s installed...

You're PTTC (preaching to the choir) Zip! We understand 7amp max molex fire hazard thing and weak wattage,etc. I guess my point is that if they targeted the enthusiast market I would give the system more kudos. I mean really the PCIe connector(s) can handle A LOT more amps @ around 30a max each. I posted the schematic stuff up last year or so directly from PPC engineering... So then they'd need a killer PSU, etc. But still there is a way to make them better IMHO.

Every now and again people post up these Coolit units/projects and it ends in failure most (maybe all) of the time.

Failure of course being a price performance ratio that is beyond reason. :shrug:

Finally though, I do appreciate the creativity that goes into a build like this. So thanks for sharing the pics/progress Malkie!

Testing..... Unfortunately one of my pumps failed during the initial test... Now everything's on the same loop and my temps are around 34C Idle & 56C under full load (i7 920 @ 3.35Ghz HT Activated)...

Now that I've tested most of my components it's time to take everything apart and spend some time rewiring it. Ooo and I have a few more modifications to make... Overall this build should only take another month or 2 to complete...

Well, that's kind of the point. When I tried my FZE on an i7 940 at 4.2GHz I found that it was completely inadequate for cooling such a high OC. Runaway fluid temps were a big problem and FZE just could not cope with them in light of the heat dumped by the CPU. However, adding a dual rad into the loop to control the fluid temps allowed me to feed very cool fluid to the CPU as you can see here...ambient temperature at that time was about 17C.

Anyway, for ~$400 CAD total it was not a bad setup at all. I had to take it down now because my main rig is with EVGA X58 Classified and that retarded stock NB sink gets in the way of the FZE, but while it was running it performed quite good and very quiet too.

Oh this again … This is very misleading and has been brought up and tested before.

The theory this works on, is to get lower temps you reduce the flow rates so the water leaving the Chiller is colder, and therefore the water entering the CPU block is colder. People then believe their getting lower CPU LOAD temps because the water entering the Block is colder.

Now people can be forgiven for believing this, because it seem logical enough colder into the block must therefore mean colder load temps right ? NO

You see your reducing the flow rates to cool the water more because its spending more time in the chiller per RPM .. This Also means it’s spending more time in the CPU block being heated back up again … SO there is NO possible gain to be had. YOU may reduce the flow rates to drop the water leaving the chiller by 10c .. But that gain will be more than lost in the CPU block as it gets heated back up again

SOOOO reducing the flow rates looks good for Coolit cos the coolant temp they monitor is on the chiller and therefore the coolant temp reads lower. People therefore believe they must be getting lower LOAD temps because of it. But this doesn’t translate to lower CPU LOAD temps.

While I may have thought what you are saying at one point in time I realize that this is not the case. I simply gave an example of when a rad is useful and that is when the heat output of the system components is too large for the chillers to handle. Hence the introduction of the rad. Also, I later found that increasing the flow had even more benefit on the temps.

Update: Quick test - The Coolit system is keeping my CPU nice cool (18-24C idle) but my other loop with the NB, SB and GPU's is kicking the 120's A$$ (58-60C)... Going to swop it out with my 360 tomorrow...

Is that special evga EK block pretty restrictive? What kind of pump do you have on the NB loop? I know my EK Supreme is pretty restrictive so that's why I ask. Seems like a single 120 should cool better than 58C... Hell a small air cooler is better!

EDIT: I just noticed your video cards on that loop. You'll need about a PA 120.2 to keep them happy. 8800GTX's get friggen hot.

I'm using the Laing DDC Ultra... According to manufactures specifications they should maintain a high flow... Also the Danger Den Water blocks shouldn't restrict the flow that much... I Added another fan to the 120 last night and the temps dropped to around 40-42C...

Overclocked the CPU to 3.8 with HT avtivated... Nice temps IMO.... Hoping to keep the same temps @ 4GHz

the only mod i did was to paint the outside/window side of the cd/dvd cage black to blend more with the color of the
case, it stuck out to much but left the rest brushed alu....

I agree... Out of all the cases I've seen or worked with - this is my overall favorite and I was disappointed when they redesigned it... Do you have any pictures of your case with the painted cage... I was thinking about doing that but I wasn't sure if it would look good...

Another Update: Running Stable @ 4.189Ghz..... Same voltage.... Same temps..... Still having problems with my GPU Temps (Second Loop - Rad Only) - they're running cool at idle but when I stress them out the temps go from 38C to 65C after about 30mins and the liquid stays around 40-42C.... Hopefully I'll have time to change out the radiator tomorrow...

Not a bad score IMO - Both 8800 Ultra GPU's are stock - haven't OC'ed them yet...

I'll take some pictures tonight, I only painted one side that can be seen and left everything else brushed, i just felt that the brushed cage flat took the focus away from the motherboard and components and painting that one exposed part black made it blend and now it takes your eye directly to the motherboard which should be the focus... :up:

Those are some impressive temps.

Temps Still Okay... OC'ed to 4.4Ghz @ 1.425v............ For some reason Core 0 runs 5-6C hotter under Prime 95???? Tried higher OC's but the Coolit system just can't keep up with volts over 1.45... Prime hit the mid 70's after about an hour... 4.4GHz is good enough for me... Ooo and my computer overloads my 750 watt UPS system every time Prime95 starts... Looks like its time to upgrade...

Note: Removed the old 120 radiator and replaced it with my 360 - Temps on the second loop are back to normal... :)

Update: Decided to insulate the TEC reservoirs... Used some Armaflex 2" tape and I couldn't be happier (Looks good IMO)... I wasn't expecting much but I was able to decrease my temps by 3-4C @ Idle & 2-3C under full load...

Making a few more changes - Adding another Freezone Elite... I'm thinking about changing the direction of the top fans... I had them facing down originally with the freezone and it acted like an air conditioner... I couldn't believe how cool the case got plus 1 freezone should be more than enough to keep the NB/SB/GPU cool with the radiator in place performing like an air conditoner...

I'm also going to add some Enermax Twister fans... Very quiet and they push a decent amount of air..

Pardon my ignorance, but can you explain why insulating the TEC's decreased your temps? I have a coolit boreas and am wondering if it will have the same effect for me. I happen to have that same exact insulation tape

Insulating the reservoirs keeps it cooler by reducing heat exposure (i.e. Heat sink, heat from other internal components to include warm air traveling past them).... Keep in mind "Do not cover the screws" they absorb allot of heat from the heat sink and cause your support brackets to heat up thus warming up your reservoir... The tape doesn't actually cover the TEC - Just the Blue Reservoirs and yes it should help reduce your overall internal coolant temps (Ooo and this helps to eliminates allot of condensation.)

Try something a little different... Going to use 12 TEC on 1 Coolit Freezone Elite... This will be similar to the Boris project on this forum... The heat coils will be used to cool the lower side and a radiator for the top....

Hi malkiewic I really really love what your doing with the 2 Elites you have..I've really enjoyed reading your build progress on the forums here and I hope there's plenty more photo's and adventure to come..
Don't be disheartened by the watercooling guys who have a pet problem with Coolit's TEC products, (Some more than others) they make some good points about performance and the high price of the Coolit units compared to the price of watercooling parts, but nowadays watercooling one off self builds can soon reach to be very expensive.A chrome 90 degree angled barb costing £5 can soon add up to Expensive.
Plus I've yet to hear of a Coolit Boras or Elite user who fried a £400 video card or Quad Extreme CPU because of a leak.
I like watercooling just as much as I like using these TEC products the wider the variety the better.
I also had 2 Asetek Xternal watercooling units a few years back and really liked using them.I know the watercooling purists will recoil like Dracula from a crucifix when I say I liked all in one external watercooling units as that's another big no no in the watercooler guru world, but they ran fault free for me for afew years and they had a nice LCD on the front showing me the fan speed and temps and a desktop control software panel to boot.And they looked nice in Silver and Chrome. The Asetek Xternals were a little pricey when they first came out at £300 and I remember reading the same type of comments back then like I read now about the price of the Coolit units and I have to admit the Coolit Elite's are on the high side from £250 to a top price of £290 here in the UK..I bought my Elite second hand, in good condition thou, previous owner took care of his PC equipment. I just could not afford to pay the price of a new Elite, If I had not found a good used one I'd never have had the chance of trying one.
I had read a few bad user reviews also about the Domino units being of bad build quality, cheap metal parts that broke easily etc.I read quite afew of those user comments.
I just wanted to add my 2 cents..Your building a high class project here and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work..Good luck with it..
Some modders have done some amazing inspirational builds with Elites and Boras units some with both like a Boras for the CPU and 2 Elites for a Quad GPU setup..I just love anything tech and enjoy even more reading other people's adventures on Xtreme forum and other PC modding forums.There's a guy from Canada over on the Coolit forum under their user modded build logs that has built an amazing self built Boras elite PC I wish I was as good!

Curious about a couple things:

1 - Did you replace the tubing that comes with the Coolit or did you use reducers?

2 - The rad is for the GPU only or do you use a rad on both loops?

3 - What size power supply are you using to power three of them with your system?

4 - Did you replace the cpu block with your own?

Thanks for the kind words... I've invested allot of time and money into this project and I couldn't be happier (Hopefully I'll have more pictures available soon)... When this projects complete I'll have a total of 4 freezone elites installed - 2 for the CPU and 2 for the NB, SB & GPU's.... It's hard to believe but they'll all fit and I should be able to maintain a very clean look.. I've noticed allot people like to include external components, but I'm trying to keep everything inside the case while redusing the noise level. Thankfully I was able to purchase my last 2 freezone elites for less than $225 each...

I still like traditional water cooling but it's just as expensive if you're using high end components... I invested over a thousand US dollars into my last build (Good temps but I had to deal with noise fans)... You can build cheaper / cooler water cooling systems if you're willing to utilize external components, but that's just not my style...

I've also noticed allot of people complaining about the Domino units also... IMO they really can't keep up with the new or old CPU's when they are under any kind of load... Defiantly not for overclockers..... I'm sure someone found it useful...

1. Did you replace the tubing that comes with the Coolit or did you use reducers: I replaced most of the tubing to help increase the flow but I used some of the neoprene tubing to loop the freezone reservoirs together.... Used bitspower reducers to adjust tube sizes...

2. The rad is for the GPU only or do you use a rad on both loops: Currently I'm using the radiator in combination with a freezone to cool the GPU's, NB, SB & Mofest.... The CPU is cooled by 2 Freezone only - radiator isn't necessary...

3. What size power supply are you using to power tree of them with your system: Currently I'm using a 1000 watt Corsair PSU to power my system... I'm using a P4320 to monitor my power usage and at idle my system uses (588 watts) & under a full load its (760 watts)... Curious to see how much power the 4th will use....

4. Did you replace the CPU block with your own? Yes... I decided to use the Koolance CPU-350 water block... It cools approximately 5-6C better than the Coolit block.

No the system isn't loud at all... Replacing the Coolit fans made a big difference ( 1 fan per Coolit system - each running @ 100% - High Air flow is important with the coolit systems - any reduction will cause your temps to increase).... The bedroom fan is louder than my computer...

Thanks... And yes the insulation did wonders for my build / cooling... Unfortunately the mail service from the US to Japan takes a long time and this causes many of my delays... Ooo and I just purchased additional freezone elites for my 12 TEC freezone - they should arrive within the next few weeks... That reminds me I need to place an order with Coolit Systems for a few custom made parts...

Maybe I should sell all of my extra Coolit parts (Pumps / Water Blocks / Brackets / MTEC Controllers / ECT)...

I finally installed my 4th Coolit & It looks like I don't have enough power left to power up my 3rd GPU... Going to upgrade to a 1200 watt PSU & finish the wiring soon....

Have you ever been able to cool this to sub zero temps on the water??? I am planning on making a build a lot like yours but using the lian li 343-b case with 4 to 6 boreas to try and get my fluid to sub zero temps. I also found this coolant that will work to -50 or lower. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...roductId=32240 if your interested in this.

I will make a thread and post pictures and instruction still in research and planing stages.

Hi I've you have built a real unique and really extreme one off build..I've never heard of someone putttinging 4 Freezone Elite's into a single case build.I've learnt alot from you progress log as I'm a bit of a coolit equipment buff.Trying to put a dedent build together myself but it won't be anywhere near as Xtreme as this.Looking forward to seeing more of this build log.
I'd also be interested to know how chilled your liquid can be kept at now you run it through 4 Elites.

Nice work and I work for the disti in the UK that has the exclusive disti rights on coolit so i see quite alot of this.

Here is one of my customers modified Coolit rigs and they have a new one on the way but i cant say too much on that one yet as its up against some competition in the press.

The lowest I had the fluid was 5C (Used all 4 stock Coolit Fans at max capacity - 120 CFM)... Unfortunately that's the coldest they'll go with or without a load (MTEC controller restricts the TEC's and limits them to 12 volts)... If you use a Mean Well PSU / bypass the MTEC controller you can reach -15C @ 13.2 volts... I wouldn't recommend going any higher unless you use liquid to cool the hot sides of the TEC (I'm currently working on a Coolit build that utilizes liquid to chill the hot side)...

This build took longer than expected but it's worth it... Currently my liquid temps are round 14-15C on both loops... The Coolit fans produced too much noise so I replaced them with some 90CFM / 19 dB-A fans from cooler master... The reduction in airflow makes it harder to keep it @ 5C especially when the sides are on the case (This increases my temps by another 1-2C)... Now I have all my fans controlled by my Aquaero fan controller (Keep them @ 100% 24/7)...

You definitely had the perseverance to see this rig through. I'll admit I was pretty skeptical that this rig was doomed, and regardless of the price I think it is extreme in it's own right. :up:

So you proved the non believers wrong in the end. TBH though, for the price (over $2K in cooling), you can always go different routes with these builds. Some people will say "what about phase" etc, but really you had a design in your head and saw it through. Would I have done things differently? Sure, but that's not your style. To top it off it looks great, is EXTREME and is the most epic coolit system I've ever seen. You should be proud of that because I seriously doubt anyone is crazy enough to try to top this.

This was defiantly the most expensive / complex build I’ve ever done… One thing’s for sure… I’m defiantly going to use a bigger case next time… The limited space behind the MB tray / hard drive bay makes it very difficult to run the amount of wires necessary to power this build… Especially when you’re trying to hide all of them…

I can’t complain too much… I took this monster to work to show it off and within a day or 2 I had some legit build requests… Nothing nearly as complex as this but its still money in my pocket…. :up:

few question for you

is your Corsair 1000 enough ?
Are you runn the Freezone 100% al the time ? (Did you have to make and adapter to plug them in ) ?
What are your Load Temps ?

To answer your question the 1000watt Corsair is enough to power all 4 Elites, but it’s pushing the limit… Unfortunately this is just enough power and this could result in a PSU failure if the system ever spiked for an extended period of time (I recommend a 1200 watt PSU)…. I used a P4320 for the results…

I’m currently running 2 Freezones @ 100% w/ silent 90CFM Fans and the other 2 @ 60 – 70%....

Recently I decided to combine all the Freezones to make one loop… I was expecting the worst but I actually received good results… My system maintains a 14 – 15 C Idle depending on the ambient temps. As for load temps… I’m pushing 56-58C after about 2-3 hours under full load with the GPU’s slightly OC’ed and the CPU @ 4.23 GHz… I’m sure I can do better but I’m in the process of RMA’ing my EVGA x58 Board…. :shakes:

I am currently running a Boreas and (1) Freezone Elite, With a EK Gold block, Core i7 860 at 4Ghz and GTX 295.

My Load get to 55-56C after 3 hrs of Prime With Furmark running on my videocard. When I added the GTX 295 I noticed alot more heat..

Looks good…. :up: I noticed that you removed your claps prior to insulating the reservoirs… Hopefully you used a torque limited screwdriver to tighten down each screw (Each one requires 10lbs of torque)… The TEC’s are very fragile and if you tighten them down too much they will crack… Any less and your cooling will be ineffective or reduced….
