Time to push it
I am sure we can start climbing quickly without a lot of effort.
If you can spare even a single core a day it will help out quite a bit.
Team rank 411 - January 01, 2010

I know you were one of big supporters of this project and appreciate you stopping by to lend a hand
I have 1 core freeing up from Climate Prediction and if someone can match it I'll crunch it here ... any takers ???:cheer2:
Looks like it supports CUDA (2.3) now too. I'll match that core.
Welcome back Paladin ... thanks for matching the core
On the CUDA front they are still trying to optimize their code.
Currently they still need an entire CPU Core and only partially use the GPU.
If you decide to only crunch your CPU uncheck the Use Nvidia setting in your E@H project preferences.
Looks like it cuts an hour off computation time (on QUAD) allowing it to use 1 CPU + 1 GPU. A shame they haven't figured out how to program more of it into CUDA, but progress is progress.
Oh, and from what I read on their forum, it seems they give extra points for WU in which the GPU was allowed.
It does speed things up a bit and ppd better but my GTX295 kept slipping back into low power 3D as it was only being used about 20%-25%.
They are talking up the next version of their CUDA app being 5-6 times faster than the current app. It will be interesting when it does come out, we might be able to convince a few others to test out a new CUDA project. :yepp:
p.s. Not going to change the team position post as it is still the same day but we have move up another position!
Fortunately, my GTX275 hasn't been down-clocking (using 195.62 driver) and since it's hardly used I can keep the fan speed low/quiet. On your 295 does it allow two CUDA WUs to run at the same time (i.e. SLI aware & friendly)?
Had lots of problems with the 195.62 (and no I did not clean up properly so likely my own fault) so I rolled back to 191.07. I have SLI off.
IIRC I had my shaders up to 1584 without error for the few Einstein CUDA WUs I crunched.
So I was dusting out my PCs today and decided I would try to stuff the pointy attachment on the vacuum cleaners into the fan of my 295 (yes, it was unplugged) ... worked a champ, my temps are almost silly low. I had not been crunching the GPU for quite some time before I started again recently and have been struggling with temps. At this moment I am working 2 GPUGrid (nice bio project) at this project's max shaders (1512) with fan at 59% (I had them up into the high 80s to low 90 last night) and my temps are sitting pretty at 82c and 84c.
Cool, ill have to check and see how well it does on my 98gx2I've got a quad I can run it on and dedicate it all to here.
I added a slow quad on this today. We are currently at rank 392. Lots of teams to pass.
Decided to move what little I had on Yoyo to over here. Nice restart on here Paladin.
The new CUDA 2.3 app released today still uses 1 GPU + 1 CPU for a WU, but on my Q6600 + GTX275 it completes in about 25 minutes. Be interesting to see how many points are given for them.
I have elected to join this team.
BOINC is a bit confusing.
My best gpu, the only gpu I have worth mentioning, is a 4870, I would like to put to work.
How do I do this through the client?
The client is attached to einstein, and I have join the team.
But there is no work actually being done. its just sitting there...
Welcome to the team ... lets get you crunching
Just so we are clear ... you are crunching under the username Chris right?
It looks like you downloaded 4 WUs (work units) and because you have a core 2 duo your machine will work on 2 of them at a time.
Open BOINC Manager and switch to advanced mode if you are not already there (should be a link on the bottom right).
Do the first two tasks listed say "Running" and the next two say "Reeady to Start" ? If so then everything is OK.
At this time you will only be able to use your CPU as this project can only add NVidia cards to the crunching.
If you really want to use both CPU and GPU you could also join the Milkyway prokject and crunch just on your GFX.
Let us know how you are doing and once again, :welcome:
:welcome:BatteryOperated:welcome: It's great to have another cruncher on here.
I was only able to get one of the new CUDA23 WUs. :( Seems they don't have enough of them to go around yet.
Welcome Chris.:welcome: One thing to add to Snow's guide is to open BOINC Manager->Advanced->Preferences->Processor_Usage and check-mark Use GPU.
The main projects which use ATI GPUs are Milkyway, Collatz, and GPUGrid.
My account name ; can it be changed from Chris to BatteryOperated? And if yes, can this be accomplished with out losing my progress?
Sure ... go to your "other account info" and change away :-)
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/home.php
Two more cores to throw on. Except when the client is setup, and the cores are at 100%, the client reads only "ready to start." The client has been in this state for over 24 hours....well, what do I do now?
Please copy/paste the first 20 or so lines from your messages tab starting from the last time you rebooted the machine.
@BatteryOperated ... Just checking in ... did you get that straightened out?
If you copy/paste the message log we can take a look and help.
Think I have it all working now. Probably be a while before the next WU are submitted for the 2 other cores show up on stats.
In addition to Core 2 Duos, I have a 1.8ghz Athlon64. Is that even worth putting on this?
Also make sure your Activity is set to Run Aways
This is what Snow wants to see...
Battery ... give it a try and see how it works for yourself. Don't let vaio change your mind ... he is not and will not join team XS, he has his own team but likes to troll around in our threads.
Dimes does not take up much of the CPU. Every few seconds it does a trace to some other computers around the world. On my windows boxes I run Dimes along with Boinc or other projects. On your computer it will show some nice graphics on where it has traced. They can be displayed as ISP name or the names of the countries. It's kind of interesting and gives a person a little more bang for the cost of electricy when running a slower computer. Dimes on any computer should get you about 4000 points per day.
There is also a Boinc project call HAL that does not use much of the CPU. It is not in the vault but the link is http://freehal.net/freehal_at_home/
So a person could run Einstein, Dimes, and Hal on one computer. Hal and Dimes would have little impact on Einstein. Anyway it just a way to help justify having a slower computer powered up.
Well, my time with boinc and einstein@home is over. Simply put, there doesn't appear to be any means of owning a single account with multiple computers attached. I used the same email address for two computers on the same network here, detached/reattached multiple times.
Take care all. Back to rc5-72 for me.
Sorry to hear you frustration go the better of you on this project.
It is possible to have multiple computers reporting through the same account, just not sure what the issue with your account is. When you re-attached did you check the option button that said you were using an existing account. Are you sure that both computers are signed up to BOINC with the same exact credentials?
I currently have three copmputers all reporting to the same account and I have had an additional three computers in the past that were also reporting to this same account.
It appears you successfully have two computers on a single account now.
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/hosts_u...?userid=488349
Should be able to add your third system (laptop?) the same way if you wanted.
that a64 3000 is slow as molasses.
go go go team XS
In just under one month we have climbed from team position 411 to 335
Special gratz to skycrane for keeping this project alive for us !
I think glennpat is racing Paladin to 1 million but I can't be sure.
Snow Crash is mashing the GPU WUs and BatteryOperated is showing us that perseverance (how many accounts do you have? lol) pays off.
Great work everyone, if we keep this pace up we will be in the top 50 RAC shortly and will continue to see our all-time position moving up fast.
Glenn made the jump to hyperspeed...:sonic:
http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?p...ah&name=461781
Can't repel firepower of that magnitude.:lsfight:
If only 6 cores were available.
thanks snow, im doing what little i can.... i just got 2 more quad sockets up and running, and finally got a good OS to go with them, so i should be marching up the ladder a bit more. yall are welcome to try and race me:)
maybe if we can get some competition going, a few more will join us in crunching....
hey glenn, where did you get the mega stats from? and how did you set them up?
To get them put your Cross-project ID place of the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Your link will then be what is inside the " " below.
One place you can find Your Cross-project ID is in your account page on Einsten where it list Cross-project statistics. Mine is 34 charaters made up of numbers and letters. There was no set up to do. I checked a few of my accounts and they all seem to list the Cross-project id so it does not matter where you get it.
If you right click on my Mega stats and go to properties it will show my link with my Cross-project ID of 3e60152ecae4692542a0a6b5b0adde22.
Sid2 over at BOINCStats has posted some pretty cool info about the Einstein project ...
Einstein
And if just one of those AC compressors goes bad it can flood the server room with oil forcing them to throw away all the equipment, file an insurance claim, and buy new...
Happens more often than you'd think.
Paladin ... do I see you slowing down a little???
Just so you know ... I WILL catch you :-)
Did you guys see "A novice1" come crashing through the door ... holy schemoly ... another great addition to an already awesome team
Yes, slowing a little to save some elec $ for medical bills and keep the fans quieter for the baby. I'm watching you though. Last check was 15 days out. I have a feeling you'll see more than just my magicjack Vista system running before then. ;)
Good to hear from you ... you take care of the important things ... we'll take care of Einstein until things turn around for you
Well gents it has been a lot of fun seeing us rocket up through the ranks on this project and while I never did catch Paladin (cheers to you ) I did reach my personal goal of 500k and I feel it is time for me to move on. I will be switching over to WCG as part of the "Super Computer" challenge. We have already started to see some really impressive results and I hope in the end we can keep some of the new crunchers on board.
Any thoughts on projects we can crash after that?
Best regards,
Steve
have a good one snow, although i thought you were going to try and catch me :D
im with you though, in the next week or so, ill be moving everything ive got over to the wcg guys, for the supercomputer race they have going on/
that should be a fun race to see how everyone stacks up against each other on one project.
I'll be switching everything for Movieman's WCG challenge too. Still have to keep my eye on Glenn in GPUgrid, though. ;)
Is there any interest in this project here? I have 6 cores and 2 GPUs on E@H on another team. Would move here if there was interest.
Anyone else feel like going for a run :sonic:
I'm coming back to run my first 1M for this project up the flag pole :yepp:
There have been some interesting developements over at the project with a new version of their CUDA app now capable of putting a real load on Nvidia GPUs and returning much better runtimes.
I've been dialing in on tweaks for best OC / runtimes ... any thoughts on posting up the deets in this thread or should we start a new one titled
"Einstein has CUDA "
or
"Einstein - Team XS below rank 200 :upset:"
Any takers?
How much do the CUDA apps produce?
From a raw points perspective they are not so hot ... my calcs so far tell me that at max OC my GTX480 will do about 21K per day. In general, I think points are nice but that's not the only part of crunching that makes me tick
I've been executing 3 WUs at a time on my GTX480 and 2 on each GPU of my GTX295 ... I should top out at about 50K PPD.
I noticed there are some regular crunchers on this project (and a few parttimers) who, while may not be posting here, have seen the team uptick and have started putting a few more resources onto this project
Tomorrow I think we'll take overall team position 200 :yepp:
<smak>
Paladin, Narmacil, glennpat ... consider yourselves on notice ... I WILL be passing you all very shortly ... do your best, make it difficult for me
skycrane ... you might be safe for now but who knows, I might change my mind and decide you need to go down also :sofa:
</smak>
Thanks to Cesinge of creeping up and making me take this serious again :toast:
I added my 8800GT back to E@H. Did not like loosing 2 CPU WCG threads to E@H but looks like it will now use just GPU if set in preferences. Even if I am reading it wrong I am running 8 more threads than I did before so I can afford 2 I guess. :)
:welcome: back poppa.
You got it right ... you can run just GPU and it is much more efficient that before!
Anyone else getting errors? I got 6 and have never had any before. Some were errors for wingman as well but a few were not. Cleaned out the dust from heatsink, hope 8800GT is not going bad on me. :(
hmmm .... I have found this project to be "easy" on my GPUs ... even running multiple instances (which I don't think your 8800GT has enough memeory for) usage and temps are fairly low so I can push max OC higher than GPUGrid. In fact, I can push high enough that my PC starts to lag and that's a sure indictor that I am leaning over the edge of the card's capabilities no matter how much V I try to give it. Of course the project is down right now so I can;t check to see what my error rate has been ... I do remember seeing a couple a few days ago but because it's a dedicated cruncher I don;t get to *see* it very much. On more than one project I have suspected that another project has *interferred* somehow, causing GPU instability (maybe not properly releasing resources?) and then a couple of crashes. Once I reboot and run only one project on my GPU (always running WCG on CPU) I almost never have issues. That's all observational and I have done nothing to try and make it happen nor have I kept any notes.
It was 6 WUs all in one day. The wingman results were all different, some also errored, some the all GOU wus did and CPU did not, 2 I errored out and other 3 did not. But none since so I guess it was the batch of WUs.
Sounds like you nailed it ... bad batch.
Thanks to everyones contributions we've been getting some nice team stats lately ... made it to 193.
I'll be mostly off line for the next 5-6 days ... should be a huge points dump as I'll leave the rigs working ... they do better when I'm not around anyway
:woot:
It is with great pleasure that I can announce that after a concerted, sustained effort, POPPAGEEK has not only acheived his 300K milestone but on the very same day he has smashed through the crust on the all time team XS pie for Eintein!!!
Congrats and happy crunching,
Steve
Thanks SC. Was watching the daily numbers and did not even notice. Planning on being around awhile so we shall see where I end up. :D
I see Gamekiller putting up some points. :welcome:
I was wondering if anyone would notice! :D
Thanks! Though, my GTX 295 seems to be taking an hour longer per WU than my 9800GT and my friend's GTX 460. The 460 I could understand but should the 9800GT smoking my card? lol
This is with 1 WU per gpu. I've tried with SLI on and off. Same result. :(
Just checked the results and the rig with my 295 is taking 3,000-4,000 seconds more of GPU time and 1-3k more seconds of cpu time in some cases. Yes this is my main rig but I haven't been doing anything on it lately.
Sorry for the off topic!! :p:
I have gone thru the computer list of many E@H crunchers looking to see how different GPUs do and was left totaly confused. My 8800GT does better than some cards that are much more powerful and the same as like a GTX260. Since some of these were on accounts with more than 2 crunchers active I am assuming the differences are not full-time to part-time comparisons. I really do not understand why there is such differences.
So I am not surprised by your expierence as you don't seem to be alone.
I see. Well, I'll just let it do it's thing! :D Thanks again for the welcome. I plan to stay until I get in to the top 10-15 unless that proves impossible. :)
I just ordered another GTX460 for GPUGrid and going to move a GTX260 to E@H. We'll see how it does compared to my 8800GT.
I edited earlier post. Had do and meant don't.
:welcome: Gamekiller
One of my rigs has an old 2 card 295 on Win7 x64 and getting some very good results. Let's see what we can do to get you the best possible runs
You can run 2 WUs at a time on each GPU so a total of 4 "running" when you look at BOINC Manager. With a bit of OC it takes about 1 hour 45 minutes per WU. The best I could get it to was 1 hour 36 minutes but then again that is with overvolting, overclocking and fans at 100% :sonic:
Operating system makes a difference but this is also fairly dependant on CPU so the faster you OC the CPU the better. I am running the 295 on a rig with an i7-920, HT on @ 3.8 GHz :yepp:
Thanks! :D
I have the 2 card version running on Win7 as well.
Thanks! Though now that I think about it.. it could be my card. :( I know this same card throws errors in gpugrid on the 2nd gpu (no overclock). I wonder if my card is semi dead. :p:
Tried this as soon as I started this project the other day. It was being limited by the vram and made my computer laggy. Could have been because I have SLI on and something to do with the shared vRam.
That's a good bit faster than mine.. *WOW* just went and looked at my BOINC while typing this.. one is 2:30 hours in at 76% with almost an hour estimated to be left.
My friend and I are both running Q6600s but he's running a GTX 460 getting a little over an hour per WU when I'm getting twice that much or more longer run times.
My first water cooling stuff ever is heading this way (cpu only though) so maybe I'll be able to clock up my CPU again to test! (that is if I don't fry it all with water :D)
Thanks for the help. Snow Crash!
Hi,
I think you must disable SLI on the 295. Best is to look with MSI Afterburner after the gpu utilization. When I turn SLI on on my 9800GX2 it crunches 2 wus @ 45% gpu load. When disabling SLI the gpu load is @ 70%.
My Q6600@3.6GHz with 9800GX2 needs 7000s for one wu. The same gpu in my sandy bridge rig (2600K@4.6GHz) needs 4600s (HT on) or 4100s (HT off). So for the old gpus you need a lot of horse power.
@Gamekiller
I never have SLI on as there were projects in the past that would simply crash ... that was likely the issue you were having with GPUGrid.
Leaving one core free also helps quite a bit.
@JuliM - do you crunch for XS?
Thanks guys. I tried with and without SLI. Same results are far as time goes. Also the gpu utilization was exactly the same both ways.
And when I did Gpugrid I had SLI disabled most of the time and still got errors.
I might try freeing up a core to see if it helps.
Edit: Free'd up a core. Didn't help.
Disabled SLI and did 2 WU per gpu and it wasnt laggy but it wasnt using more gpu% (except maybe a little on gpu0). Figured it might be a cpu bottleneck but I paused WCG and nothing changed still.
About time to send this card out of the window! :D
@Snow Crash
No, not jet;) I´m crunching for my own team for 6 years now. My e@h nick is hotze33.
Ever since that last post I've been running 2 WU per gpu (SLI off) and I gave it a little time to settle in.
Looking at the estimated times in BOINC and the actual run time on the e@h website results page it seems that they're just taking twice as long to finish.
Leading me to believe that maybe they aren't getting enough data from the cpu... but I've been keeping an eye on the cpu usage and it's no where close to using much. Also, even stopping WCG doesn't effect it.
Renaming my app_info to disable it. Not worth the extra hassle if it doesn't do extra work. :D
I reached my goal for top 10 on the team. I'll be moving on now. Not sure what next though. :)
So long E@H. :D
