Jiggy's WC long log (TJ07)

Ok, i have seen alot of worklogs while poking around here so my TJ07 arrives next week sometime and i think i might start might own long worklog as being 17 i will gather money over the summer holiday from working part time :rolleyes:i will also add lots of pictures as i know 60% if the people dont bother to read the pots they just like the 'pretty' colours ;)

This will be my 3rd attempt at watercooling and i plan this time to do a proper neat and professional job of it.

From this i will take all of the hardware (CPU, MOBO, RAM etc) and add to the new rig... Later in the summer i will upgrade to i7, i will take all of the WC parts and in addition i have ordered a 360 rad, some compression fitting, looots of sleeving, new blue 3/4" OD tubing and other random things i will add as the thread thickens ;)

I dont have a nice D-SLR camera just the basic $100 family digital camera but... i will try my best to get some nice shots to show you all

the 1/2" isn't to badder size, its nice for only small amount of cooling, it will be cooling my NB and mofset. And the size aswell of colour difference between the two loops looks nice ;) (i hope :rolleyes:)

Yeah Maxxie will have purple fluid in her build and someone linked this 'purple' tubing to her log. Well, it's certainly not what I call purple :(.

well i'm keeping the zalman, so that will be external. But i think the rest will be internal this time, its so hard to move it with that thing on the all :rolleyes:... But i might come up with some random idea and have some tubes poking out, not sure yet :D

Update just ordered a G.Skill Falcon 64Gb SSD and 2 x 1Tb HDD should come in about 2 - 3 days, will post some pics when they arrive ;)

Ok solid states and HDD's arrive Monday, there has been so many problems with shipping and its sooo annoying! Also the case will finally ship on Monday via DHL and arrive next week.. So fingers crossed i should be able to do some work on it at last :D

you could take some needle-nose pliers, stick the heatshrink over them and stretch the tubing out to get it over the end plugs, and then just shrink it back down

Was woken up at 7.30 this morning (on my day off after going to bed at 4.00 in the morning) by some person at FedEx saying they have a really large amounts of books :shrug: and could i come and collect them. I hadn't ordered any books, but... well went off down, when i got there i just saw my Tj07 case and was pleasantly surprised. God knows how they thought it was books.. But o well, it weighed a ton :eek:

In the Tj07 box came a 24pin ATX extender, so i decided to sleave that instead of doing my PSU (don't want to break my 100w corsair :rolleyes:)

Didn't like the modding kit, was useless and it they broke, waste of $25. Getting two pins do the job 100% better

I want to hide that drive bay and get rid of the large holes in the bottom of by Tj07, so i have designed these, going to take it down to the metal works shop tomorrow see what they can do for me :D

Behind the cut out will be some 92mm blue LED fans, the reason i had to do this is this is where my HDD and SSD will go and it needs some ventilation (even though there will be a 120mm inside there circulating air)

Comments about sleeving.
AC ryan or whoever actually make a decent ATX pin remover that's flexible. The process is still a PITA but at least it won't break on ya within 2 pins.

Step 3 is brilliant, so far I've been cutting 1 piece to length and using that as a template for the rest. Your idea is way better! :)

Step 4 + 5, you can get better results using slightly smaller-diameter sleeve (I use 1/8" for 16 to 22 awg wire) and heatshrink (also 1/8", glue lined). Also, it's nicer to heatshrink the heatshrink (ok that sounds stupid) BEFORE clicking in the pin. I line up the end of the heatshrink to the end of the pin, shrink it there, then tuck it into the connector. It's perfect, doesn't expose any wire, and no bunching. Your results may vary depending on what diameter sleeve/heatshrink you're using (e.g. Shazza, I think she leaves a small gap between the pin and the heatshrink).

Step 6, I also use a lighter. The trick is to use a large flame (lighter on max setting) and flick it back and forth quickly width-wise for about 30 seconds. Rotate the wire if you see any areas still looking a bit "loose." Shrinks nice and tight without melting the sleeve. Hairdryers usually are not hot enough to fully shrink the heatshrink.

(I hate using heatshrink, shrinking, heating as interchangeable nouns and verbs. There must be better words out there...:p:)

In all honesty i ordered the wrong size heatshrink again, i picked one of every size on the site (LOL!) and non of them were perfect so just had to make do :D and nice to know about the glued one :)


Ok today has been a busy day (even though it doesn't look like much). I got up early and printed off my sketch up drawings and went off in search (with my dad driving, 3 months until i can take my test :D) for someone who would be able to cut my custom driver bay cover, after going to about 4 -5 metal shops and non of them having any aluminum in stock and them looking a bit confused when they asked what will this be used for i finally found a place that sold sheets of aluminum, but... at 31 euro for a 2m x 1m sheet and me only needing 60cm x 30cm i thought it was a bit of a waste. I saw next door was a sign making company (you know the big billboard) to see if they cud cut aluminum if i was to buy the mother of all sheets of aluminum. There answer.... "No" only PVC. So as we left i saw in the scrap metal pile a 70cm x 40cm piece of aluminum :D So i went into the shop and asked kindly if i could have it and they gave it me for free, i walked out through the workshop and saw a machine that bent metal so i asked the bloke working the press if he could bend my sheet at 90 degrees and he did, so.. All in all got it for free, not bad i think. Went to the DIY store and picked up a dremmel (i broke it lol) some spray paint going to pick two more cans of black up tomorrow and some sand paper :)

Once i got home i covered my shiny aluminum drive bay cover in masking tape and started to mark out where i want the grills to go.. i changed from the original design slightly, i think it looked better?

Then went down to the garage, and started cutting holes in my MOBO tray, and other places, i found the dremmel wasn't to useful, i broke all the bits for it and then in turn burnt out the dremmel :p.. so i went back to using the jigsaw (as the (as the 6" grinder was out of action and a 9" one was a bit to much :P)

I would love to be able to do that, but in Cyprus we just don't have the CNC machines around local and i doubt they would but it for me anyway =/

I think the blue LED fans and then have "Jiggy" in white and out of site above it but a UV cathode so it shines :D

I was think about that too. That other idea came to me, but seeing you don't have what you need to do it. I would go with the blue fans and white jiggy. It will still look cool :up:

Due to the base not working successfully, as the whole i made for the WC tubes to run through were blocked by the rad i had to redo the design, so i need more aluminum so the work will have to start again on Monday when i can get my hands on some more :D

Looking good... I would layout the hardware first to see where you need to make the holes on the divider.

That what you know exactly where the holes should be in relation to your waterblocks/motherboard.

Ok i cant straight connect the tube to the GPU due to rad being in the way so it will have to be bent like this and the other one (to the right) will have to be bent to the right to go onto the 250 tube res. (i didn't do that as my sketch up tools are so dam limited :p)

i have done the mock up as you say and it should all be ok, i just need to think how i will route the tubing to look nice it might have to be

Pump > 360 rad > 240 rad > GPU > CPU > res
Pump > rad > mofset > NB > res (zalman reserator 1 v2 loop)

Then i went on to replace the front of my DVD drive, after 20 mins of trying to think of ways i can get it to eject with having a full cover on (was thinking of rewiring to switch and putting it on the top :eek:) my dad walked past and in 30 seconds said i should extend the little switch and because i will be using spongy double sided sticky tape, make it in to a simple push switch. And voila it worked, very happy with it, cant wait to see it installed.

Ok so everything is prepared, tomorrow is the big day, taking my old PC apart, cleaning everything, and putting it in the new case, should be done within two days as i still need to do sleeving tubing and other bits. So ye, lots of pics tomorrow and the house house will probably look like a bomb has hit as PC parts will be everywhere :D

Yep used a router with a 1/4" bit. The first time i tried it, i thought.. hmmm lets cut all 4 (ye i made 4 :D) in one go... it failed miserably, the aluminum melted to the blade, got all clogged up and in the end the blade bent, then i thought.. lets cast them out of aluminum.... here are the pics i wasn't going to post.. well that failed to.. All it did was burn the mold, and a wet sand mold was to soft to use and i wasn't patient enough to make a plaster one :rolleyes:

question...
the Bay area cover, i see that you've set a guide to make straight cuts with the router... how did you control the length of the cut as in the start/end positions? eyeballing it?

why did you try the cast HDD panels if you've already gotten them made?
why so much effort into making a fancy HDD holding panel if they will be covered?

what are you using to make nice sharp bends on your alum sheets? jsut a sharp corner and a MDF board? or do you have a brake?

1) Those are very restrictive elbows. Kinda defeats the purpose of using fat 1/2" tubing.

2) Why not just use the original GPU block ports? Is it a problem of running into the pink tube?

the reason for using those that 90c angle is becuase the compression fittings dont fit on the top they hit the card :( If i had knew about the porblem i whould have bought some nice 45/90c barbs.

I guess when i install my new MOBO and RAM and CPU i few months down the line i can replace them :)

Ok the build is done, tested the wiring. lighting and fans, just need to fill it up in the morning and leak test then i should be ready to go :D

Ok, here is the work log from the past 3 days, i know i should have done it day by day.. but ever tried to surf through hundreds of pics, crops, edit, re size and organize all from a net book and little touch pad :down:

So i got up bright and early Tuesday, and got straight to work with drain most of the water out in my room into some jugs, then took the case down to the kitchen where i took the tubing out :D

Cleaned the thermal paste off the CPU, and realized that silver cleaner really makes copper shine =]

At this point the kitchen and dinning room was just full of PC parts, looks like a bomb had hit it

Once i had cleaned the MOBO with canned air and cleaned the blocks, i put it back together and took some photos outside :D

I use OCZ freeze for the CPU and GPU and them Artic silver 5 on the RAM chips and parts on the MOBO

Cleaned the GPU up and put the block back on, i changed the oriantaion of the barbs 4 - 5 times after this as things didnt fit and tubing wouldn't bend etc, when i get the new hardware in a month or so i will get some 45c fitting :D

Cleaned the CPU block and put that back together with the new compression fittings, was worried at first that they werent going to fit :eek:

Once all that was done i put everything on the MOBO tray, and routed some tubing from the CPU to the GPU, also ran my 24pin ATX extenion cable under the MOBO as there was no way in hell that would of worked once everything was fitted (there is ther pic from the other day with no blur this time ;))

Now it was time for the sleeving of the 8pin CPU and the 6 + 8pin PCI-e cables, my original plan was to sleeve each wire but.. i didnt have enough 4mm sleeving so i just did them in one go :rolleyes: :D

I checked to make sure the 240 rad and PSU wud fit, they did which was good, but it ment the 2nd mid plate holes wouldnt line up *fail* so i had another idea to use blue acrylic to make the midplate :D

Put the pump back together and put barbs on the 360 rad with lots of PTFE tape as last time i did it it leacked then connected them togther and put them into the case, was a close fit

Do to the direction of the top SATA power connecter needed to changed the direction of the others that were at 90c, was more difficult than a thought it would be

i tried to sort cable managment but with 4 x HDD, 1 x SSD and 1 x DVD drive all with cables its a bit difficult.. but o well out of site out of mind ;)

Once i did all the cabling i found the wire wasn't long enough so i had to join it, used juction boxes and it fitted all neatly back in place

Ironically fans didnt fit in my fan grill due to depth :( so i used acrylic and some spare blue LED's :cool:

I had chopped all molex's off the ends of my wires to save on space, so i made this, just one molex with a female connector on one end then all the cables in the case go to a male connector and simply pushes in, and they had yellow black and red

Is that Feser 3/8 ID - 1/2 OD pink tubing? With Feser compressions?
And the other is 1/2 ID - 3/4 OD, right?
How was the 1/2 OD tubing to work with? Did it kink easilly?
Wondering because I can't decide wether I should get 1/2 OD or 3/4 OD for my TJ07 build.

I thought of that, but the space meant it would cause problems for the the drive bay cover, i might try it soon :) And ye it is, because the pink cable out the back was down the steps was pushing it up and out, needed it to stay :P: so just for photo purposes ;)

Thankyou, about the tubing.. the Pink(purple it says =/) its very high quality i was very impressed it bends well and looks great in normal light.. but under UV it looks very pink maybe not to some people taste (i will explain in a bit) and they are Feser fitting, very good quality and cheaper than bitspower to.. The blue tubing is XSPC and is fantastic very very impressed.



Now on to what i have learned from my build...
-That cheap 90c barbs are very very very restrictive to flow
-Pink looks nice in the day.. but not so nice under UV
-Dont put fingers into fan blade to see how fast its going, it cuts fingers and breaks fan blades :D
-Always think of everything ahead don't think "it will be fine if i leave it"
-Make sure tight bends are secure to the barbs, and if out of site use jubilee clips
-Fan controllers are awesome :D
-HDD's get very hot in a small place
-Making PC makes a lot of mess

Things i am, going to do now
-Replace pink tubing with orange (so blue and orange loops)
-Change 90c fittings to bitspower fittings and put a 45c fitting on the top of the graphics card so it can go from the top of the GPU to the CPU instead of looping
-Maybe get a new pump because my current one is making weird noises
-Find a way to cool hard drives better

1 -2 months down the line
-Get i7, X58 MOBO (watercool it), 6Gb DD3 RAM, and a RAM cooler
-Maybe SLI

Good job, Jiggy. I like the colors. Also like your summary of what you learned during the process - ouch on that fan incident.

Got these baby's today, only will install one at the moment, and it wont be water-cooled, in the new year i plan to get one WC'ed then when octa core come out, i will get X58 :)

I use the zalman for cooling my Northbridge and Mofset, does the job perfect and its quick and stylish IMO.

I just got to buy the blocks, i thinking koolance :D
