Custom WC case [2x360 rads]

I always wanted to try my self in building a custom case. After i got acquainted with water cooling, I stated thinkin what is the best way to place rads inside the case. And also wanted to make a mobile and easy assebled case
Here is what my thoughts look like in 3d:

This is my first big work in 3dMax.
It is not finished yet. But the main part is complete. Just need a bit help or advice.
I used alu frame to strenthen the case. And 5 mm plexiglass to cover it all around. the planned size is 660x600x240 or 660x600x220
So any thought are welcome.

hmmm...a bit different...but i like it so far...lots of potential...keep at it

get as much room as possible behind the mobo. you will thank yourself.

but that has alot of potential with the rads like that.

I like it a lot...but if you are going for a true WC case, may I suggest flip the motherboard vertically so the GPU blocks can be seen? Oh an make sure to put routing/holes for cable management.

Other than that wonderful job, I really like the white too :)

The space between mobo tray and side panel is 15 mm. If i increace it 10mm more the hole width of the case will also increase by 10mm. That is if width is 220mm.
About another rad up top - it wont fit there, because of the control buttons and dials will be set ont the top panel there and there is not enought thickness to fit rad and fan, not to mention th shroud.

The vertical mobo orientatation is really awesome. But can manage to create a mobo tray for it and also a tray for wires and powercords.
The gpu block will be seen clearly because of high mobo tray setment
About the color, i havent decided yet. This is my project color, not final. It can be anyone you like, as long as you find plexiglas of that color.
As for me, i prefer black. :)

I like the basic layout of the case, but I would make the airholes alot smaller, allthough it affects airflow it would imo look alot better, but I could guess you made them this big because its easier in 3dmax? It could be cool with a custom softmounted spot for the pump?

Is it designed to house a Monsta? ;)

No, it is not hard to make smaller holes, in fact, i had made those hole 2 times smaller in the begining, but didnt like the look of it. Also it is harder to make that small holes using lazer cutter. I am using acryl, not metal.
I'll think about the softmouned spot for a pump(s)

couple of comments from an ape...

1) true WC'ing case, isolate the radiator compartment so that air flow does not flow into MB or components.
2) decent airflow over MB
3) able to easily removable air filter before the radiator
4) take a close look at TJ07... love their build... a solid C frame with 2 vertical L brackets in back, then midplate to hold it together... simple and yet... well executed.
5) vertical MB aligment, google some pics of the Voodoo case... nicely done imo.

that's all...

love the use of Hex on the back... a bit much in the side, imo... but meh.. it's just me...

Sure we can, but it will be more difficult to place tubes.

you can google for Voodoo Omen and check link for images. you'll find a lot of pics of the various versions of it.

as for your frame design, i noticed from the exterior design that the top-front-bottom is a unibody, much like the TJ07... and given that it also has the ridges to support the side panels, it will also add to rigidity of the structure.

also consider the fact that you'll add vertical risers for the bay devices, that attached to a midplate, i feel that it will give strong and rigid structure, not needing so many L frames.

seriously, take a very close look at the TJ07 case... it is a C shape that is held by 2 vertical L and midplate... the vertical risers in the bay devices also adds to the strength of the case as well...

i've taken a bit of pics of the TJ07 and will try to post some soon.

I've got the main idea - to use less L frames. But didn't quite get with the explanation. Probably of my english level.
You can post the pics you have teken (with comments) here. It be very helpful if you point out your tips with arrows on the pisc.

Whats the space betwen those rad brackets and case sidepanel ? Will it fit 38mm fans + shrouds or something similar ?

Any idea on costs ?

the space is enough to fiit 38mm fans + 30mm shrouds on both sides
Havent calculate the whole cost. But tn e alu frafe is goin to be cheap, maybe 30-35$
The main cost is 5 mm black acryl and laser cutting it. I thitnk 100-150$ will be enough.
The problem is i cant find or make(using CNC) those corner conectors i've came up with (the dark ones): 4 in front and 4 in the back

Looking at the HDD cage, i think it would be nice to have a system similiar to LianLi's, that you just have to slide in the HDD. Makes life easier :P

And that side vent on the HDD case is kind of out of place imo, would look better if it was on the other sidepanel, and have the fan pulling air instead of pushing air... but thats just my opinion, do whats best for you :D

Well, there are the rails to slide the hdd along them.

I plan to mount vents on both sides of hdd cage. The cooler the hdds will be, imo

The wires will be comming right out the back and into view.

Played a bit with materials in 3DS Max. That is what i want it to look like. :)

Looks nice, but the side of the case needs some venting, else it will be a hot case :)

Since its small, i tought it was for fan cables, power/reset, etc...

DAmn, cant find those corner connections nowhere. And without them i cant start a build. though it will take a month to order and deliver 5mm acryl sheets. Dont have it in my home town, only transparent(but it sux). Also have to make drawings for the laser cutter. But it is only a matter of time. ANd there is no problems with getting alu frame. So it those conection that is pain in the as@#)..

What corners ? =o

The fans on the back are 120mm ?

Maybe a hole on the mobo tray so we can reach the CPU backplate...

Look at the the frame pics. There 8 of corner conections. I can go without ones in the back, but, the front ones are obligatory.
All the fans are planned to be 120mm. Biger ones wont fit back panel, otherwise you'll have to cut out some of a alu frame to fit it.
Already thought about the cpu backplate hole. Will be there it in the next update

how bout a 120mm fan (or fan hole) in front of the hd rack .. and above it?
a 240 fan grill is possible too ...

Take a look at the previous page for the pics with instaled components

What if you remove that "wall" in the bottom of the case, then you could use a 120.4 rad on the bottom, and a 120.2 in the front =o

Yes, they can be custom made, no one wants to do just 4 or 8 of them. 100 is minimum. And it will cost me more than 100$. :(
About rads, yes it can be done easily. But already have 3x120 feser rad. ;)

Guys, help me up. Have this odd idea. What if i mount fans using long (30-40 mm M4) screws instead of using standart shrouds (made from old fans)? How will it effect rad cooling? Will there be a great difference compared to system with shrouds?

Hu13caP. You need the shrouds in order to improve fan performance. Especially with the removal of dead spots. Without the shrouds the fans at that distance will lose static pressure on the radiator. Again - the airflow will not be able to be effectively concentrated without shrouds or perhaps ducts.

You could however use the old fan frames as shrouds.

Where did you get all those buttons from?

I like your build, I'm building a wooden case with a similar design. I put the PSU and Pump on the bottom next to the radiator. And I moved the radiator over to the side. I like how it makes the case significantly shorter. If my calculations are correct its about 637.4 x 535.4 x 178 mm (L x H x W). Just an idea for a more compact case.

But it looks like size isn't much of an issue here lol

have u considered using 140mm fans instead? they're quickly becomming popular. case fans & also radiator fans and sizing.

also, i'd suggest having the radiators on top. radiators perform best as intake to the case, the top of the case will have much less dust coming in than from the side/bottom of the case like in your pics. and i also agree, more space behind the motherboard

You can order standart buttons in any amount. The black body buttons are made to order and cost additional 60& for the amount from 1 to 500 psc. Delivery is via DHL or express service is 50-60$. And 20-35$ viad standart post service but with tracking.

I've increased space between mobo tray and side panel to 25mm.
About fans, i allready have enought 120mm fans for rads. No need for 140 fans and rads. btw, there are almost nothing to choose from 3x140 rads, apart from black ice.
As for the rad placement, the temps will be lower my way than yours, cause the cold air is at the bottom of the room. I imho there will less dust cause the rad compartments are almost sealed and separated from mobo compartment.

a difference of 2 feet in a room will not many any difference in temperatures. what there will be is dirt/dust that sits on the bottom of the floor, and there IS a noticeable difference between intake at the bottom of the case and the top

If this is for a structural piece, you will want to solder it (or better yet, weld it). Otherwise it will have no way of keeping the case from flattening itself under its own weight.

Yes, weld, of course.
So any ideas?

Take the corners to a body shop or possibly even a boat shop and ask them to throw some TIG tacs on the gaps. Then smooth everything out and have them nickeled or chromed.

Or, even easier, get some JB Weld and smear it in the gaps, then sand the area down smooth and paint.

I think that you should have the aluminum structural rails anodized black or painted gloss silver and the joints should be chrome. That's what I would do.

I love this case! Two 360s and room for a 480 up top.

How about mounting an EK 400 res or two to the underside of the top?

Went to a body shop, and they told me that the cold weld is the best for my needs, cheep and reliable.
Havent found jb weld in uor shops. Got to look for something else.
Had experience with POXYPOL, but didnt like it

I just finished reading through all the posts and I'm impressed with your case. Looking forward to seeing this all the way through to completion. You've inspired me to design my own case in 3ds max, I have a few years experience with it and need something to do. :)

So i have come with this idea: to build the case using transparent plexiglass and then use car window tint to make it solid black. Can also aply tint on both sides of case parts (top, bottom, etc)

What do you think guys?
Maybe someone allready done such thing. Ill be glad to see pics or to read info concerning it

Instead of looking for plexiglass, try looking for acrylic. Also, have you tried Google? ;)

may i make a small suggestion? if you go and isolate your PSU aswell, run a "plank" across the top and isolate the psu and the wires, giving you more room to hide wires and pretty up the case, you will enjoy not seeing your psu, theres plety of area for it to get enough air circulation, and it gives you more area for wires without seeing them, naturally cut your plexi off overtop of the psu cage..

Thanks for the idea. I have reorgonized the build, so now psu is at one level with bottom rad and its fan is facing rad.
I allso managed to put hdd box on the top of the front rad, while leaving space for 2 dvds, fan controler and reset/power buttons

Hmm, seeing importing is out. . . .thinking. . . .do you guys have spry can paint in Russia? If so, I'd spray the inside of the clear, that should give a nice high gloss appearance. If you want a flat, matte or satin finish, I would spray those on the outside. If you actually want a smoked color (semi transparent). . .I haven't a clue. :shrug:

About your "1 ton" comment, it sounds like you may have been talking to the wrong ppl for your needs. It sounds like you were talking to raw pellet dealers instead of finished sheet retailers. :confused: Exactly how much material do you need?

I need 2.5 square meters. Not more
I talked to retailers, they dont have it now, but they can place order to manufacturer. But last one doesn have it ethier. So if they produse it, it is going to make at least 1ton. And the retailer has to buy it. But he wont.
And yes, we have spray paint.
What do you think about tinting crear acryl?

Tinting might work well for smoked acrylic. I don't know how dark of a tint you can get over there but here in the States, the darkest allowed by law for passenger vehicles will allow just about any light source (like MoBo LED's) inside the case to be seen outside. I think only limousine tint might possibly be dark enough to stop any light from escaping.

Well, i found 1% black tint on ebay. And if that doesnt work, the i can always tint both sides of case elements

Looked for polyurethane? Other alternatives: Plexiglass, PVC, TPT Urethane (expensive and flame proof - lol), vac-melt plastic sheet (for vacuum forming - get a thick sheet and cut to size), perspex, plastic laminate sheeting.

Or seeing as you can get hold of aluminium easily why not do the lot out of ally? If you want the plastic look simply laminate some Polythylene sheet onto it with bonding glue. That way you could have metal inner and plastic (coated) outer (or vice versa).

Outside possibility - Fibreglass? Or even painted carbon fibre?

Love the design though - im attempting a similar thing but have cheated and started with an old server chassis ;). Admire you for doing the whole thing yourself. Good luck :up:.

No, with fans in push/pull two rads won't fit in the front. The only place i see the third rad can beplaced is backpanel, but it will 2 section (240) rad
