Just ordered one 10 minutes ago.
I'll let you know how it goes.
They seem to fair well against the E8500 according to most reviews out. It's also gives the 720 plenty of competition which is amazing for the price it can be had ($115).
lol price already dropped on this by $5 in a few hours. just wait a week or two for price to come to equilibrium
Yeah but Newegg knows there are early adopters of technology and so they know people will pay more when stuff is released. Same thing happened with the 720. No free shipping for a week and price was jacked a bit.
Phenom II X2 550 is unlockableeither on the chiper boards as well as expensive mobo.
I'll post model names:
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 rev 2.0
Gigabyte GA-M720-US3 (jes, nForce ulocking PhII well as SB750 :))
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P (AM3 board with DDR3 DIMM Slots)
All of those 3 boards are cheap and You can unlock your PhII X3 or PhII X2... ;)
Can all gigabyte boards?
I know the DDR2 boards can, I presume the UD4/UD5 AM3 can also?
UD5 can.

2 unstable cores :(

Well, what did you expect? The Phenom II X2 to be a fully functional 955BE with great OC? I would be greatful if even one core was unlockable at upped Vcore and stock speed. That way you got a X3 for the price of a X2 (and since there is no 3,1GHz X3 I would have the fastest "stock" X3 :P).
Here is a good review from Guru3D:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/athlon...50-be-review/1
Quite impressive, performs slightly better or the same as the E8400. Intel needs to lower their prices for their E8400.
ive been out of the game for a while... still rockin a socket 939 opty 165 lanparty ultra-d combo... whats a good mobo to team this with?
So you sure its the cores that are making it fail
And not mem/NB etc?
Because it seems odd that they would fail orthos at stock whatever, but be able to get into windows at 4G
Especially if its XP, as the XP startup is really tough.
Using Windows 7. Pretty sure it's the cores that are failing. They fail Orthos at any speed, even underclocked.
Definately not the ram as I'm only changing multi's.
I still don't understand how it can hit 4Ghz & boot into Windows, yet can't Orthos underclocked & overvolted..

pay day isn't until friday damn they will be sold out by then
ordered mine @4:45am woot ,hope for friday delivery but betting on monday.
I have had mine since yesterday, and they've been in stock in sweden since monday:D
This is just another Phenom II thou, I want the Athlon II to play with :shakes: For some reason that product won't hit the shelves till next week:shakes:
Anyways, today i've got some stuff to do, then make a clean partition for writing my first serious review on these 2 CPUs - I am also eager to break the 4GHz barrier on air haha!
Athlon II is at TigerDirect.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8&Sku=A79-0250
The 250 is still only $10 cheaper than the 550 @ TigerDirect. I'd go with the 550, especially with the Bing cashback of 8.2% and no tax for me!
Thanks Baam for Tigerdirect. I just placed an order for a 550.
doesn't the 250 athlon 2 have 1mb/cpu? can those unlock to 4 core?
i should have known when i seen the die shots :P
but in those reviews or w/e, the 250 loses to the 550 in everything BUT gaming. i hope 1mb l2\core makes a comeback.
I just got my tracking info....delivery expected on 6-5....sweet i get to play with my new toy this weekend!
This is what just burns me inside:

WTH is AMD thinking? 3.1Ghz and still that slow?
Perkam
according to asus site my board m3a78-t has to have beta bios 1103 for the ph2 550,i bet there wont be any core unlocking on the asus board.
Where is this vs. the e8500. I won't dispute its a contender but I'm skeptical
:( oopsie
rev. 2 does have SB710
Yeah its acool little mobo for single cards.
Dang Egg has my 550BE set to be here Monday. This morning it was In Oakland ,California 20minutes from my friken house.
To top off things Off they shipped from NJ instead of CA..
I live 4hours from Warehouse in California ,Now the three day turned into a 6day. I told em free shipping since i paid for threeday. They said Ok , but i have to still wait till Monday crap.
How did they unlock on the nvidia motherboard?
edit found this
"Things took a turn for the better when we switched to the triple core Phenom II X3 720 as the Gigabyte has a trick up its sleeve. In the BIOS you can use a hidden option Ctrl-F1 to enter Advanced Chipset Features and then you can enable Nvidia Core Calibration "
http://www.trustedreviews.com/mother...GA-M720-US3/p2
Is this the only nvidia board to have this, as I can see no settings on my tf8200, I have unlocked my BE 550 on my Biostar TA790GX A2+
Im up in the Air It sat in Oakland all day yesterday. Oakland is the UPS distributing center. So Maybe they may get it here today. I do have UPS on Sat in my area. I see the truck deliver almost everyweekend .
Worst case ill have it Monday and make Monday afternoon/night a long NighT:D
Interesting Its on the prowl.......
7:55a.m. left Okland ,,Arrived 8:30a.m. SouthCity UPs distribution center.
My Sat delivery is some what around 3:30/5:00p.m.
Now im opening Front Door for no reason,Me brain then Imagines a new Qiuet(unstealthlike) UPSTruck pull up lol.
Had some time to play with the Phenom II X2 550 last night. Not to bad for a $105> processor
(Copied and pasted from a different forum to save time)
Test Setup:
CPU - AMD Phenom II X2 550
Cooling - Xigmatek HDT-S1283 w/Ultra Kaze, Apevia 120mm
Motherboard - ASRock A780FullHD 780g M-ATX
RAM - 2X1GB G.Skill DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
GPU - HIS Radeon HD4850 512MB
PSU - Corsair VX550W
-For starters I did some overclocking with low cpu voltage.
http://img.techpowerup.org/090606/3.6@1.288V913.jpg
-3.7GHz @ 1.3V>1.328V
http://img.techpowerup.org/090606/3.7@1.328.jpg
-3.8GHz @ 1.35V>1.352V
http://img.techpowerup.org/090606/3.8@1.352V.jpg
-3.9GHz @ 1.45V>1.448V
http://img.techpowerup.org/090606/3.9@1.45V.jpg
Unfortunately 3.9GHz was the most I could get out of this chip. I'm not sure if its the CPU or the 780g. I didn't have many voltage options to change on the motherboard, but even having the CPU Voltage at 1.55V, NB Voltage at 1.5V did nothing to help me get to 4GHz.
It's a rather low end board though so something tells me I can get to and past 4GHz with at least a 790**/Sb750 chipset.
Hopefully by the end of the month I'll have enough for a decent motherboard, that new Foxconn board is looking good though
Nice nice, but will the 550 work with a am2+ mobo? Maybe a dumb question but :p
Why is everyone so excited about the athlon x2 250?
anyone interested in having chips that are unlocked should probably get one real soon. AMD is pushing hard for mobo manufacturers to stop supporting unlocking in the bios. there's also efforts to make two of the cores useless in the later batches. i read this a few days ago, but i really forgot the source. let me try to find it and link it.
Hmmmm would happen sooner or later. Im gonna tweak it while i can..
0921 APAW X4core 550BE. Second one of this stepping to unlock that i know of.
If i was AMD ,,
Just go with the flow ,let Enthusiast push these things...I have several friends that have grabbed new Mobos and a 550 just to play.
Nothing to lose and lots of people still tweak CPU's,, Mobos with the ADDED feature to tweak these chips are actually getting great results.
