Hondacity's HeatKillers GTX285 in Triple Sli (simple test)

Another fine weekend as I got some points from HWbot.

But anways, just sharin about tri sli, in parallel.

Simple Setup:

Single loop: Dual 355s > Koolance 350 > HeatKillers > HWlabs 480 GTX with 4 Scythe Gentle Typhoons 28dB :D

My flow is alittle below 1.5gpm...look at k350 + dual 355's 480gtx, dunno what the tri sli gpu's introduce as restriction...but I don't care. Flow is overrated.

Well its obvious parallel gpu blocks work.

************idle temps aren't really that interesting, nvidia throttles the gpu speed to around 300mhz versus max set, temps go down at 300mhz

************restriction on these blocks aren't bad.

very nice and even temps across all GPUs, nice :up:

This is how I read this - we have TOO much flow in our systems right now as in an amount that is on the flatplane of the thermal performance.

1.5 gpm across the loop means a mere .5 GPM is going through each GPU block. I think we need to re-evaluate our stance on restrictive blocks in a loop with others because right now its looking like FC gpu blocks can perform just as well as series with a third of the flowrate we commonly give them in a series loop.

I think flow is as important as it ever was, i mean there is the optimal flow rates to cool your system based on
ur components. If it's slower or faster, there always is a sweet spot...

Plus the OP is using a killer pump / radiator set up, so his temps should be very nice
using a 480 and Typhoons.

but I think that as you would drop his flow, he better have a big honking rad on there
because the flow thru the gpu's goes down by 3. and when it starts getting to slow
then it will easily start to heat up.

Say he only had 1 GPM that is .33 for the cards,
or even .75GPM takes it down to .25GPM per gpu

So i would think that with parallel cooling the flow matters even more then in series.

well what I was refering to is that I have my GPU on a DDC3.2 with an FC block on a dedicated loop; I would probably get the same temps more or less if I was using a D-TEK DB-1 for a pump lol

Those HK blocks sure looks sweet, especially with that 3 way sli bridge.
The HK FC blocks seems to doreally well with low flow, but it differs rather much from the "standard" design of GPU blocks, would e interesting to see how a EK style block would perform with such low flow.

Honda thanks for posting the results. I was a bit skeptical at first but based upon what a few others (you, ballzor and Radical53) have posted I was hoping that a parallel solution would work for a Tri-SLi set up. Your results are better than expected.

I am loving the HK Tri-SLI solution since they first released it for G80. I don't even care if parallel is bad for flow, I just love that 3 way connector.

meh its a bit of a trade off... 3 blocks in parallel will have less head loss than three in series, the cpu blocks benefit the most from high flow, so by having your gpus in parallel your cpu will get more flow

id say 50c under load is a pretty good result, definitely not gona have temp related stability issues


the point to note from Honda's results is the even temps across all three cards

Interesting show, but I had thought it was already pretty established that cooling gpu's was not dependent upon high flow or massive radiator capacity.

On the other hand, I see your monitoring sofware you're using is all over the place in reference to your cpu's core temps. One has the highest core at 66C, one has it at 74C....odd, that.

My belief is that there is a difference in design philosophy between the German equipment and American equipment. The continental Europeans generally do not believe in excessive force, and use a more measured approach. Their water cooling generally uses smaller diameter tubing and somewhat less pumping power, keeping note that Laing pumps are German.

Not to say that there isn't a large contingency of Americans who want absolute silence, but I belong to those who worry a little less about silence than continuous load temps, not to say that HKs are not good at continuous gpu loads. Obviously, the HKs would work better in serial (as in lower continuous load temps), but I gather more HK owners than not do not worry about losing a little performance for elegance.

I'm American and I believe in the brute force approach. It works in my sort of setup, where the optimal flow rates are much higher than those of a German machine. Whether anyone agrees or not, I have four pumps right now in my single loop with four video cards. I need all the performance help I can get when the gpus are loaded fully 24/7. Run 3D Mark Vantage looping 24/7/365 and you'll understand. Therefore, I am a very poor candidate for these HK blocks or the parallel gpu cooling approach.

Regarding the state of the hobby, there was once when performance actually mattered. Now, gltiz and show takes center stage.

Wow, awesome setup. My single 8800GTX is whimpering in comparison. Nice test, love the 8 core utilization too!

Starting on the left, it shows lower flow rates for the 3 different CPU water block setups. As you add pumps/tops, you get a higher flow rate. Then you get even higher when you switch from the 480GTX to the PA120.3. The config you are running is the third one ... and that's the one you used to get the CPU/GPU temps you posted. Not an apples and apples comparison.

I am operating with severe constraints. Ease the constraints and I'll show you better temps than that. Alternatively slap my constraints on him and he'll suffer a bit more on the temps.

I can assure you, ceteris paribus, that a serial setup American style with ultra high flow will perform better than a parallel setup German style on an apples to apples basis.

Is the German style parallel setup an acceptable compromise for convenience and appearances? That's up to the respective individual.

Does it work? Of course it does. It works well, just not as well as the American serial style ultra high flow setup, that's all.

Has there been done any serious testing conserning parallel vs serial on three GPU's with varying pump pressure/flow? It would be nice if you, Hondacity, made some testing parallel vs serial. I know this is a lot to ask, but right now one side is saying "yay it works" and the other "nay it doesn't work good enough".

So what real world temps would you estimate roughly since your running 4 atm? I'm planning on running the same setup (tri-285's+HK blocks) but with 2xddc's and 2x480's in series dedicated gpu loop

Ian, you cant possibly be telling me you think giving an FC GPU block an extra gallon of flow increases your performance very much.... considering that the performance of a parallel we a setup with .5gpm is on par with anyones decent series setup we are clearly on the flatplane of GPU fc block performance > .5gpm

Never mind me. I'm adding a fifth video card in the next few days, without adding any more radiators. I'm pushing the upper boundaries of the thermal envelope.

With your planned setup, you should be under 48C, perhaps even 45C. It depends on what fans you use and at what voltage. Plus, all important, it depends on your case ambient temp, which I cannot predict. An air conditioned room would be most beneficial to load temps.

Oh yes.. when I do five or six cards in a row, one extra GPM is very good.

I'm going to try three in serial and two in parallel this weekend. That's five cards, and only because the mobo freaks out with six videos, or I'll do six videos. I intend to maintain in excess of 2 gpm.

Love the fast series loops, but have to say that the HK delivery is interesting.

I would only say that when using paralell distribution in the loop that your have to make sure your overall flow rate doesn't drop to low, then it will impact the tri sli's paralel temp drop very quickly and fall off the flat plain, also if you get a clog or blockage in your gpu';s that it's harder to detect without alarms on evey card.

Interest yes, but zero experience and zero knowledge about LN2 and DICE. Zero equipment too. The most radical I've gone is phase, but even that wasn't a large success.

OK ... curiosity got the best of me ... obviously, I couldn't duplicate Hondacity's setup - but here are my OCCT results running the PSU tests. My loop is MCP355 w/XSPC Res Top > PA120.3 > EVGA GTX285 x3 w/EK FC blocks connected in series. Video cards set at same settings as HC. CPU is on it's own loop with the same pump/res/rad/combo and the GTZ. Ambient is 23 degrees C.

Note that my GPU temps did climb to 51-53 during the test, as I ran it for the whole hour to complete the PSU testing. Also ... we can't compare these results to Hondacity's and say that Series is better than // . Obviously, there is no CPU block in my loop, and the radiator and pump combos are different. And, my PSU voltages jumped around a bit, even though I passed the OCCT test. In fact, maybe I shouldn't even have posted this - but thought it was interesting, and at least Hondacity will know he's spurring people to check things on their own.

Until Hondacity removes the connector and stick 2 tubings between his cards in series, we don't know whats the difference between parralel and series.
I however still vote series connections.

I think the beauty of Hondacity's test is it at least gives an alternate tubing arrangement when needed.

To me, for an inverted ATX TJ-07 build, a parallel GPU tubing arrangement is a lot easier. Parallel used to be a dirty word since the concept is hard for a mind to grasp.

At least this shows it works, but as always, try it both ways, pick the one that suits you.

Shaaza I think your results say a lot. Anecdotally, it establishes that running multiple gpu's in parallel is a viable and comparable option.

Overall I am with NaeKuH on this one...do what works best for you. Thanks for posting your results. :)

There is no substitute for my personal homework and individual due diligence. Nothing teaches me more than my own practical usage. After a decade at this hobby (and I mean water cooling... 35 years for computers), I'm still learning everyday... like not using zip ties for high pressure systems.

It would be a tragic mistake to rely on somebody else's system as the basis for my own decision-making. Someone else's test results may influence my decisions, but will never replace my own judgment and experience. And not to sound mean, but I've taken a couple of trips around the block and flushed my ego down the crapper by making mistakes more than a few times.

And that I have a boatload more knowledge about my own system than anyone else, and I know crap about anybody else's system, and honestly don't give a crap. And therefore, I couldn't care less what anyone else chooses to use in his own system because its not mine. And I won't lose sleep if someone says his is better, because I'll send my congratulations and then do my own thing.

yeah its a lot of work to rig up a 3 way gpu loop once, let alone twice.

which is y nobody has done the comparison yet :)


unfortunately my ek gtx295 blocks cant run in parallel (although they do have parallel flow paths inside each block) or I would do a comparison.

shazza can you do a 1hr power supply test on your series cards?

I did run the PSU test for one hour - I have the graphs. Let me know if there's something specific you want to see. I saw a fair amount of fluctuation on my 3.3V and 12V lines -- seeing the 3.3 down to 3.07 and the 12V down to 11.45 or so. GPU temps climbed throughout the test - not massively, but up to 53 on one card, and 52 on the other two.

Can you clarify your comment, KaptCrunch? Not sure what you are saying about data not showing correctly.

shazza occt finished, but darn it only reported one gpu temp...i'll have to tinker around occt to get 3gpu temps...

edit: i found out gpu2 and gpu3 are disabled...ahhahah

How did you get that program to play nice on a 64-bit i7? Skinnee and i were dying almost an entire day because that program kept crashing our i7's.

Awesome, Hondacity. Amazing temps - very interesting to see how well the 2 x 4 Rad setup does. I guess I will just have to live with 50C at load on my GPUs and their measly little PA120.3 - but nice to know what can be accomplished. And that CPU likes being on it's own quad as well. Sorry I guess I was a bit too vague in my post. In the last parallel Tri-SLI thread Naekuh was all over it preaching how it couldn't possibly work. How he had tried it and failed miserably. How the middle card wouldn't get any flow. That was actually HIS image that he posted, and the sad thing is most people in the thread went along with him, I guess Post Count >>> *. Because when I posted it people immediately jumped on it as being a ludicrous assumption to make.

Anyways great work, those Heatkillers really look slick and your temps are superb. We now have had no less than 3 people post excellent and EVEN temps using this same parallel Tri-SLI setup.

I'm not sure you have enough radiator capacity for this build :rofl:

So, after seeing this cooling setup,I was wondering if a Swiftech mcr320 with Medium Yate Loons, would be enough to cool the 3 285's?? I ask because I am putting my 3 under water next week.... Damn they get hot, with stock cooling and over clocked in tri-sli... :D

That depends mate... with medium speed Yate Loons and an MCR320 you are looking at around 13-15C delta between water and air temp loaded. While that is more than cool enough for GPUs (calculate air temp + 15 = water temp + 20 for OCed GPUs = GPU temp), it's not great temps. If you just want to silence them and don't care if they run at 50 or 60C, it's enough. Otherwise get a GTX 480/Feser/PA120.3 or equivalent.

The results I posted were with 3 285s on a PA120.3. Temps are fine for all practical purposes ... both at stock and even with the cards overclocked. You will not really be loading the cards at 100% during most gaming or other sessions. Even 50 degrees ... or 60 ... or 70 will be better than you can do on air, and the cards will run fine. So, I'd say give it a whirl with the MCR320.

It also adds further reinforcement against the "Card 2 will get no flow!" myth that certain people have been pushing in regards to this type of tri-sli parallel setup.

Keep in mind however, that when you split a loop 3 ways each part of the loop (in this case each card) will get 1/3 of your overall flow. So you need to have a pump with good flow capacity (head pressure is less important in these setups because you are also making the resistance much much less than normal by going parallel). So there are certainly many things you still need to be careful of, just that you don't need to worry about each card getting different amounts of flow.

Thats a good point.... so the MCP655 would be preferable for 3 way over the MCP355

head (@ 12 V) 15 ft (4.5 m)
discharge (@ 12 V) ~ 120 GPH (454 LPH)

MCP655
head 10 ft (3.1 m)
discharge ~ 317 GPH (1200 LPH)

What I'd like to see is the following test:

I think that the parallel topic is quite interesting, and there is certainly not enough testing. That's why we are having these discussions.

But yeah to keep this on topic it does show that parrellel blocks are a viable thing to look into obviously. Just need comparison runs now between parallel and serial to see what is easier to setup and which is more beneficial.

The problem I see with a high flow parallel setup is that the flow is still relatively low in the cards, but very high in the radiator giving less contact time with the fins to cool down. Sure it works fine with 2xquad rads, but wouldn't anything? The test I would most like to see is a direct comparison between parallel and serial: Same pump, rads, fans, water blocks, etc... except for the way the tubing is connected.

It doesn't work like that. In fact, the radiator performs better with more flow. Just go look at any of the testing charts. The Watts the radiator can dissipate at any given deltaT goes up with flow rate (not by much but it does). This is because it helps lessen the boundary layer between the tubing and the water.


Sure if you slow down the flow rate you will lower the temperature of the water more from rad in to rad out. However you are also increasing the temperature RISE in the waterblocks by slowing the flow down. The Watts dissipated is still going to be the same either way (it always has to equal the Watts put off by the components). Therefore you want to get the most efficient heat transfer, which is with more flow.

Hypothetical Example:
Flow 1: 2GPM
Air Temp : 23C
Rad In: 33C
Rad Out: 32C
Because of fast flow the system can dissipate the heat put off with a 10C deltaT between water and air. However the fast flow results in only 1C temperature drop.

Flow 2: 1GPM
Air Temp: 23C
Rad In: 35C
Rad Out: 33C
Because of the slower flow the radiator needs a higher 13C deltaT between water and air to dissipate the same amount of heat. Notice that the difference between rad in and out is higher but overall water temperatures are higher as well to compensate for the loss of efficiency in the radiator with lower flow.


Now those numbers are greatly exaggerated. Water flow is a relatively minor component in the performance of a radiator, but you get the idea.


Really you shouldn't think about things in terms of change in temperature across a given component (radiator or waterblock). Think about things in terms of Watts dissipated and delta between air and water temperature.

I just had to post here because if the thread has the words parallel and Naekuh in it an alarm goes off next to my pc and I get a text message and an email reminding me to get involved.

Anyways I cool my 3 gpu's on just one double rad, load temps are 40-50C (they're old 3870's), in a similar parallel arrangement. Parallel rocks, but if there is one thing Naekuh is right about, its that the inlet and outlet should be on opposite sides of the setup, because of the effects of the velocity of the water and the inertial forces involved. Either way, its a matter of a couple degrees, which can easily be due to differences in chips, TIM, mounting pressure, etc etc.

Inertia doesn't really play much of a part in closed loops. It is more about pressure differentials.

I'm running tri-285s on that exact setup. It's more than enough. You'll run out of voltage long before heat becomes the issue with your overclock.
