It Looks like I am going to have to buy a EVGA Classified to pair up with either a 975 or a 950.

The 950 should be able to get close to 5.0GHz on water and maybe 5.4-5.5 with a 975 based on the above Bench.

Plus BartX just shipped me my first DICE/LN2 pot. Time to do some DICE benching later in June/July with a new D0 system.

thats a sweet chip... amazing to see 5g on air when most 965s cant even get near that with ln2! :D how does it clock on ln2 though?

amd managed to hit 7g on liquid helium, but on air they still clock the same
intel amanged to hit 5g on air, but i suspect on ln2 they still clock the same

i think intels approach makes a lot more sense... i hope amd focusses on better air ocing as well instead of liquid helium results that maybe 2 or 3 oc teams in the whole world can reproduce or beat.

i think you didnt follow i7 ocing very closely, most chips, even 920s, can hit 4.5 on air now, not fully stable though...
but going cold barely helps at all, going from air to ln2 sometimes only gains you 100mhz. most of the time its more, a couple hundred mhz, but i7 chips dont really scale properly with cold for some reason...

yes man, 32M is under cascade , not air ! My screen can also make ss arround 5Ghz on air and 5,5ghz under cascade :)

I dont know yet but for this chip 25x is not a good multiplier to use,i will try to get more LN2 tomorrow morning but we are in the middle of japanese hollidays called golden week and i think all LN2 sellers will be closed.

i think you didnt follow i7 ocing very closely, most chips, even 920s, can hit 4.5 on air now, not fully stable though...

but it not happens with multiplier locked like 920 or 940,you just need to set the highest muliplier and go but they are limited by bclk

question: how DFI perform with D0 chips? i mean, have u noticed better cpu oc on this mobo than asus (for example)?. Usually DFI have that "little extra" that makes the difference, at least that's what i read in a lot of reviews but even here on XS.

what's your opinion m8?

Now, as to your question... Honestly, I don't like Asus. Never did, but since those incidents with the Z7S workstation-class mobos dying on me/us WCGers in masses and seeing their RMA policy and stubbornness to admit they build a POS mobo that costs 450€, they're pretty much dead to me.

Like I said I haven't had much time to play with this particular CPU yet, and I haven't tried it on any other motherboards, but from what I gather the only real difference to be had is with the max BCLK, which I am obviously not interested in with an unlocked mult ;)
I'll leave who wins for max BCLK for other to judge, but eva2000 has been getting really great results with his DFI there, also the evga classified and RIIE seem to be able to go beyond 230BCLK given the right CPU, mem, and settings, but apart from that it's personal preferences rule I guess. I have been using DFI for almost 2 years now, and mostly like the voltage stability and durability of their digital VRM (I run 24/7 BOINC load on phase change with high overclocks, not many boards can handle that strain in the long run).

I will also say that as of bios 0227, the board behaves very well with my D0 CPU, OCing is a breeze. Only issue I had is that it didn't like my Diablo 2000 mems using Micron D9GTR, but I am not convinced it's the boards's fault, as I was having issues with them on a Gigabyte as well. New Diablos carry Samsung HCF0 by the way, no more issues with those :)

i've had a lot of asus mobo in past few years so i don't know too much about other brands, but your answer is pretty much what i wanted to know about DFI :up:

i asked u 'cause i'm a first timer with DFI brand (and with i7/X58 aswell) :p:

There are already some W3520 and W3540 retail D0 chips available that are at least on par with our 975's.
For air or water cooling, get a W3520. I have seen a few prime as high as 4,5Ghz on water, and 220 BCLK is rather easy with them now.
Of course you won't get 5Ghz Pi shots (easily), but what matters in the end is that you can run them just as high for daily use.

4ghz is pretty much normal, i havent seen a chip that cant run 4g on air, even old c0 chips :) 4.5 on water seems to be normal as well jcool, i havent seen anybody reaching less than that on water, some even reach it on good air, the newer c0 and the d0 chips need less voltages for it however.

starting at 4.6 there seems to be some weird barrier
that many chips cant surpass stably even with ln2 and huge vcore, must be some transistor limitation or a fundamental design limitation...

pcrinimal, yes, there is something very weird about cpu multipliers, especially with intel cpus... just ask KP and hipro5 about their 780ES chips... the diferences between the multipliers were insane, some clocked ridiculously low compared to others. im pretty sure it has something to do with internal timings and interface buffers that dont work well with certain multipliers. in the end, multipliers are pretty similar to memory dividers, and we all know what vast diferences memory dividers on chipsets had. multipliers seem to be a lot less weird in that regard but it still happens... i dont know if intel can adjust some timings or settings to improve this, but i think they can... but they obviously spend most if not all their time tweaking everything for the stock multipliers, and not higher multipliers...

I agree on that, my 975 doesn't seem to like more than ~1,53V Vcore for example :shrug:
But it does run higher than 4,6 :D

and this D0's really are something. my C2D E8600 wouldn't boot no matter

what 5GHz (530*9.5); (600*8.5); (500*10) no way and mine was a

Q822A435 watercooled. Now seeing a true quad core anchieving this kind

of speed on air is just outstanding. :up:

Ive tried a bit yesterday and i got 5280MHz with 33x

its not that bad for only 1.48v but more voltage didnt help ,but the funny thing is about the settings ,i can easily get into windows at 5.1GHz with 25 x 204 but i can not boot at 33 x 150(4950MHz) :S, 33 x 133 is just fine but if i try to set on bios 2 or 3MHz more of bclk the SO will not load ...
well ,something is holding me back,i tried to change the memory divider and pci frequency with no luck,of course this chip can do more and i will try again soon :)

anyway, in the other hand i got good news,this chip is amazing for bclk

Great results on that 975, even if Intel binned this CPU a bit more heavily (not saying that it's true, just a speculation), 5GHz+ on air is pure evil ! :clap: I gotta say, I wouldn't be happier or more excited seeing the chip hitting more than 5.6GHz on LN2, I'm pretty darn satisfied with its sick performance on air. Now, I know that it's XtremeSystems here and than subzero cooling plays a rather important role, but watching such sky-high frequencies with these new D0 stepping CPUs on air, makes me horny :ROTF: :up:

Junior, could you perhaps send me a PM with some information regarding the Biostar board you're using, such as availability (can't seem to find it nowhere here in Greece :() and price (you said it's really cheap in comparison with other ones - of course taking into consideration its amazing performance/price ratio) ?

cpus not "liking" 20/21 multis is a board problem ;)
its when the TDP TDC exceeds the programmed value, then the cpu will become unstable and crash, thats a board problem. on BloodRage you can completely cut the tdp and tdc reading for the cpu, dont know about other boards but id be surprised if they dont do it... i think they adjusted this in the more recent bios files though and at least manipulated the tdp tdc reading of the cpu so you can clock higher.

im sure if youd try those cpus again you could hit 4G easily :)

Lol. Sorry, that's all I can say to that. I run a DFI UT on my testbed with "set current limit max" option enabled and TDP/TDC limits disabled.
Some 920 CPUs just don't run well using the 20/21x mults, nothing to do with the mobo. If you don't disable TDP and TDC limits, the CPU will come down from 21x to 20x, but that's it - doesn't influence the way a CPU handles the multipliers :rolleyes:
