wtf? the bios for these boards is AMI, not Award :slapass:
also, the AMI flash utility supplied on the asus website doesn't seem to support forced flashing. The generic one you can get off AMI's website does have more options you can use, but I don't think there's a parameter "/F" at all.
E: the generic afudos.exe gives the error message "BIOS does not support AFU". Guessing the flasher doesn't support this type of ROM for some reason
E2: actually, it's not surprising that the AFUDOS found on AMI's website doesn't work: it's way too new. Going to try an older version

E3: Success! AFUDOS 2.19 flashes it to the older version without any problems. Found here:

E4: Seems to be working. So far the only complaint is that it takes incredibly long to POST because it can't load "Express Gate" for some reason. Fixed by disabling Express Gate. What the hell is Express Gate, anyway?
E5: 4th core is stable. I'm now the proud owner of "AMD Phenom(tm) II X4
