Laing D5 Vario Vs. Laing DDC3.2 - Which is better for watercooling?

Wanted to ask which one is better for watercooling, the D5 Vario or DDC3.2?

I notice D5 Vario head, pressure and flow rate is higher than DDC3.2.

However I found on Martinm210's Excel Flow Rate Estimator that as soon as the D5 Vario has a little restriction, flow goes down, and DDC3.2 is slighty better flow.

I want to buy a couple of these pumps, and I'll be using the EK tops on them.

I've tried to search the forum a little, however I'm told the D5 Vario is better, but Martinm210s chart says otherwise.

Define better? What are you looking for? The best flow? Controllable? Those 2 things you can only get from one of each of those models. You can only get control over the D5.

I can say what was my choice and why I chose it though.

I chose the DDC3.2 becasue it was little, it performs well with the aftermarket tops, and it performed well enough for what I needed it for to start out with.

Both are good pumps. They are both reliable. I think the DDC with certain tops will outperform the D5 by a little bit though. It also dumps a little less heat into the loop which is a bonus.

I had a thread that shows just how powerful those little things really are. They are quite impressive for their size. I've also seen double DDC's on the XSPC double top, and man that seriously moves some water. It'll splash water right out of your resevoir if you take the top off! :D

Edited: Correction, that was a Hardwareluxx Top I saw, not a XSPC. Whoops! :D
PS Re-Re Edit: The Hardwareluxx top does not fit the newer DDC3.2's :(

I believe the DDC3.2 with an XSPC top outperforms the D5. In reality, both pumps are excellent for PC water cooling and you will be happy with either.

It all comes down to which blocks you're using. Having control over heat dump and flow is a big bonus imho. D5 with DetroitAC top...:up:

Also depends a little on your loop layout. D5 by default is intlet on the side outlet on the top, DDC with top is inlet on the top outlet on the side.

I belive that was XSPC. I saw it in one of Naekuh's pics. Two pumps go into one top. It's acryllic. Lemme go look it up to be sure.

I beleive EK has a double top for DDC, will upload link after work. :)

Is it an EK? I'll go find it then. I know I saw it on Naekuh's setup. It's sandwitched in between two pumps. I thought it was an XSPC.

We need Naekuh to find out who makes that thing. I can't find one iof XSPC makes it, I can't find it. I thought it was an XSPC though I might be wrong.

Ahhh, OK. Lemme go edit that post and correct that. It also said that the Pump will not fit the newer DDC3.2 on that Hardwareluxx top. :( What a bummer.

I like the variable aspect of the D5, and it doesn't get as hot on the outside as DDCs. Don't EVAR EVAR NEVAR put a DDC straight down on Petra's Gel Stuff.

So, it can be said D5's are more reliable, quieter and run cooler than DDC3.2?

Wouldn't say yes to any of those.....have seen failures in both DDC's and D5's. The DDC3.2 is NOT the same as the old maligned DDC2 pumps.

Quieter? I cannot hear my DDC2 pump running at all.......and I'm sitting about 2ft from it.

Cooler? Both are elec. pumps, both get warm. True, the DDC does concentrate its heat on the bottom, but the D5 does produce its share of heat, just in different areas.

I understand DDC2 aren't around anymore, and those pumps were bad.
Also, D5 Vario is reasonably larger than the DDC3.2...

Reliability is about the same, but tiebreakers would be the stigma of the older DDC's that were somewhat unreliable; also I've seen a lot of D5 derivatives in industrial applications so that makes them seem more reliable to me. :shrug:

DDC I would say is quieter.

D5's external casing doesn't get as hot as the DDCs, but I imagine they both put out the same heat dump. Most would say that the DDC is better if it has a fan under it, and that's not needed with a D5.

I have had a D5 for a while now, and am glad that I have it over a DDC. I don't think people would regret buying a DDC though.

Nice I always wanted to see a D5 vs DDC thread, tho before buying my D5 I was thinking on this modded D5, any thoughts on that particular model? (please ignore price just performance side) modding a D5 with those parts is a good idea? (besides bling factor)

I recently had a D5 that died - it's been used for about 4 years 24/7 with multiple refills of the loop - i think the constant priming had it running on air for too long over many short periods of time.

At any rate, I've replaced the D5 with 2 DDC3.2's and XSPC Res tops - I can say that both DDC's running together create less sound than my D5 did but *only* once the system has fully bled. Until that moment, they were loud... very loud as air bubbles passed through the impeller.

What strikes me as odd about the DDC3.2 with xspc restop is that I don't have any indication as to my flow just by watching the water in the res - it appears not to move. At least with the D5 / EK res or Swifty res I could gauge my flow by sight. The controller on the D5 was also mighty useful.

I confirm, my DDC 3.2 + Top is very loud because of air bubbles.
It would be solved when the bleeding will over.
I m pretty sure of that because before i reset my liquid cooling loop, it was quieter.

but with ddc u can monitor rpm at any control panel
or plug rpm wire to mobo and set system to shutdown if pump fails

What kind if output do you use to monitor the rpm? mobo fan power connectors ok?

i think any mobo fan connector would be ok, didn't try it though. i just use scythe kaze panel, see ~3900rpm from my ddc1-t. also this panel has a loud beep alarm if rpm goes to 0.

just wonder, how much heat both pumps generate. for example, i stopped all fans (mobo was unplugged) and temp increased at 3C above ambient. this is with 1liter of water in the loop.
