Liquid Helium benching - Las Vegas XS OC event
-
Wow the photos rock! This is some next level ish, I'm impressed.
Does that withdrawal device control the flow of the helium into the pot?
-
Awesome!
I was in Vegas at CES but was unable to make it :(
One of my hotel-mates made it though and gave me a good report :D
-
So much cpu's on one table ... I'd be happy as a child :D
-
It's fantastic :YIPPIE:
In addition, I look very happy.
-
wow
that is a fantastic results
-242c
maaaad
doesn't the helium change your voice, when its in air condition?
-
-242°c
Nice results! Congratz!
-
Lovely pictures!
Once again Congratulations TEAM Finland and AMD:clap::clap:
PS. I love that broken DFI pic. Who took the chipset :p:
-
Nice pics!
What happend to the bend DFI board?
-
-
what about 06/01/03 3d marks ? and super pi :D
-
Amazing !!!! Congrats for the 3DMark 05 WR
-
wow !! so fast ...
any spi numbers ?
-
congrats petri and sampsa for the impressive clocking session :toast:.. it must be something else to be benching with -240 + c temps :D.
btw did you guys cool down the pot with ln2 before bringing in the big guns ( liquid helium) ?
-
Good stuff guys. It's nice to work with people in the industry and see people in the industry work with the overclocking community. Great things can be done if we all work togather. Nice Results BTW!
-
Good stuff, more benchmarks! :p:
-
So liquid helium really does a good job? I was wondering because I've never seen anyone using it before and the needed energy to vaporize it is far below liquid nitrogen (ca. 66 fold iIrc). Seeing how fast LN2 can run out using liquid helium doesn't make that much sense to me.
Or was it just for the *bling*, to show the Phenom II doesn't have a cold-bug?
Nevertheless: good results
-
Nice pictures!
Is there a specific reason why you ended up using the 790FX instead of a 790GX? From the pictures, it seems you had booth boards.
-
Amazing ! look like big funny and enjoy  Thanks for nice pictures SF3D ;)
btw. give me one DFI 790! please :D:D:D
-
super results ...
looks like you guys had a good time too
(beer bottles on benching table tsk tsk) :p:
-
Congrats again macci, Sampsa and SF3D you did really great job
Team Finland FTW
-
Awesome work Team Finland & AMD! -242°C is just <3
-
Nice bet that was fun:)
-
Hyvin tehty pojat! Quad Core @ 6.5GHz and @ 6.3GHz benchable is almost unreal. :D
Who would have thought AMD would be able to whitstand -242C say 2 years ago, you'd be taken for a fool. :D
EDIT: I'll be holding a speech about overclocking in school next Tuesday, I will be sure to include some words about you and your achievements. ;)
-
Great results!
Congratulations my dear friends!

Dats a "cool" party guys :D
Congrats once agian on WR!!!
Nice pictures.
-
:shocked::shocked: OMG big congratz for new WR on PII :]
-
liquid helium pawns Liquid nitrogen
excellent benches
-
Just wanted to say it was my honor to be at this party and all the guys put on one hell of a show.
I can't say enough about the good people I met there.
-
Nice party!!!
I look forward to your record:D
-
6.5ghz quad  excellent clocks guys, and that trashed dfi board is just nuts :D
-
That's just....
Really nice event and seems that you've a lot of fun.
I've no words, just... congrats guys. You're on the top ;)
-
Congratz Team Finland, thank you for the pictures!
I cant wait for more results of the Phenom II!
-
Congratulations guys, that looks like a very imppresive display of overclocking at it's best. The clocks on that Deneb are sure something new, but the only things I don't like about that is this part :(

That picture brings a whole new meaning to "binning", and do you think this will open a new chapter in benching?
-
Thanks to everyone!
That DFI was first cooled down with LN2 and then Sampsa kicked it really hard few times. That sample deserved it.. It took out one of the best CPU's we tested :shakes:
About binning.. Sampsa and I tested 4 CPU's under LN2.. there was just a lot of back up CPU's. Don't take it too serious.. it is just nice to take that kind of pictures. When you see something like that, you are like a kid in a candy shop
-
congrats again Team Finland

My jaw hit the floor a few times looking through those pictures, thanks for posting all the details and pictures! So Dave did you get a chance to play around with any frozen liquids or hardware while you were there?

I was just making a joke about how all the CPUs were in a bin like containers.
-
yes, we used our hands to pick the CPUs from trays we tested while drinking cherry-coke
edit: unnecessary :)
-
Seriously this is nothing short of amazing, the AMD crew and you guys did one hell of a great job there, all that while having fun, could hardly get any better than that

wicked @ cherry coke is SICK , would be awesome if it was same availability as in us

really sick stuff, I am totally stunned by these pics :slobber: thanks for sharing all that with us!

Very impressive stuff
Too bad about the broken board, could have made someone very happy with that :p: :slapass:

They say a man has to know his own limitations and I know mine.
I was just happy to sit and watch these guys.
For years I've read the posts of people like Macci and Sampsa and I was lucky enough to get to meet them and see them in action.
Another was this guy SF3D. Gentleman with a big smile having a great time.
Very sharp guys who know "their stuff" and gentlemen to meet.
No ego BS just nice down to earth people.
I can't say enough on that point.
All the people I met were the kind of people you want to know.
Guy's enjoying the hobby amongst friends and that is what made that day so special.
-
so many amd cpu's can i have one :p
awesome work! insane temps!

So many back-up CPU's huh? :):)
Anyway, the fabrication process on this CPU's is just amazing, it puts new meaning in the phrase "sub-zero benching". I really hope we'll see more of that inte new CPU's.
-
wow the tray
it reminds me of godiva chocolate candy tray :D
-
Nice results, nice car, nice cpus, nice boards... everything nice! :)
Did you test the maximum "fsb" of the DFI Boards?
-
Wow, liquid Helium. Isn't that very very expensive?
Great benching, looks like you had a great time : D
-
Thanks for sharing Dave, it sounds like it was a great oppurtunity and experience! I hope that I'm able to do the same someday, I've been reading about this stuff for years but have never checked it out in person before!

How did you change the N2 out when you wanted to start the LHe? Wouldnt want to have a solid block of N2 lol.

Nitrogen will not solidify even at -273c :)
plus you have to use LN2 to get the pot to -196 in prep for the LHE otherwise it would take too much helium to bring the pot temp down :)

Is this supposed to look like a very large man sat on it?

I thought it froze around there, maybe thats something else. Did they just cool the pot and then let most of the LN2 evaporate or did they just add in the LHe along with the LN2?
-
Nice pictures and results. :toast:
-
Yes.. first you let the LN2 boil away and after that you start to use LHe. There was some really weird liquids in the pot after we end our session
-

Excellent results mate! But I have question...isn't it Windows Xp with CrossfireX (4 GPUS)???? There is a new driver which works in Xp?? :P
Thanks!

No it is Vista. You just click "adjust for best performance" setting and you have the similar look on your vista.
There is OS limitaton with GPU's. Quad CF works only in Vista and Windows 7.

It could have been liquid O2 in the container after the benchsession, where temperature was still below -200C. Huminity is very low in Vegas, so no idea about the quantity as it looked like a lot of liquid was in the container.

Yes, when we lifted "lid" which was on top of F1 EE and liquid helium feeding hose, we saw some liquid dripping.. but I think it was liquid air not liquid oxygen:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_air
"Liquid air is air that has been cooled to very low temperatures so that it has condensed to a liquid.
Since gaseous air has 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, the density of liquid air at standard composition is calculated by the decimal percentage of the components by their respective liquid densities. Its freezing point is -216.7°C and its boiling point is -194.35°C."
Anyway.. very cool
-
That's what I ment, but couldn't find the right translation =)
-
Very nice picture's:) Looks like your guys had alot of fun:) Does anyone know the price for hellium contra LN?
-
-
Liquid O2 would not be something you would want to find in the pot...Especialy if you are a smoker =))
-
Depends on your location and availability liquid Helium here is about $50 a liter :(

Thanks for the thread Petri and great photo's.
Ive been out for the past week traveling and finally back home and well rested.
Everyone (general preemptive statement) - Lets assume the processors and GPU's we all get are exceptional for our use, no need to degrade any bencher for having better access than others if they have worked hard to attain such a part, this goes for all the top guys seeded parts by their sponsors, this makes sponsors unhappy as well as casts bad light on those with such parts. I would hate to have people bag on the top guys for being supplied cherry parts.
Working on Cebit now and would love to combine forces again for another OC event in Germany.

I'm planning to go there this year.

I think my joke was misunderstood, I was just making a pun given the fact that the CPUs were physically stored in bins. I was most certainly not attributing their scores to cherry picked parts, nor was I trying to rag on them. I've just never seen so many chips sitting in one place.

Yes, that's correct. Those are ACARD ram drives. I saw those first time under that benchtable.

Unfortunatley that is not what I mean, I am sorry if it was interpreted as degrading the guys that worked really hard there. All top benchers use cherry picked hardware, it is very hard to be the first without the best hardware, and that takes no glory away from that guys that are doing it. On the contrary, testing to find the best is hard work and it takes lots of time and determination. There si no noubt in my mind regarding the tremendous work the guys put into this event, and they fully deserve our respect and appreciation for that.
What I was trying to point out is that I am unhappy that a truly good Phenom II chip takes lots of pre-testing to find and there are chips out there that bearly come close to 6G. I was expecting more from AMD then just a great fabrication process, and no cold-bug does not help at all if your chip does not scale with voltage how it should (and that is the case of many of these chips). Also performance is far from what we have expected. So...my pun was intended for AMD, not for the guys that worked hard and got really good results.
-
guys, you MUST come to CEBIT. At least I would have a real reason to come ...
-
Hey Guys!
This is a very important mark in OC history, Liquid Helium..:yepp:
5* for the inovation and pics!!
Thats realy nice work and thats great results to AMD!
No Cold Bug or boot?
Congratulations, I love that!;)
Have a nice Benching days :D

Kudos on the video

Glad you liked the disclaimer. Even the Lawyers laughed.
It was an honor to work with the legends and a pleasure to collaborate with the XS community.
I cannot stress enough the human factor in extreme OC and events of this scale. It's difficult to capture on film. The only things preventing utter failure were the spirit of the team of overclockers and the coordination of everyone who made the event possible. The encouragement we received in the preview events inspired us to make this most extreme attempt with LHe. It was literally at the Chicago preview event that the idea for AMD to attend the XS event and perform "The Experiment" was born. The team had less than a month to make the event a reality, and a three hour window with 500L of LHe to make it history.
-
Good to know Simon!
I like inside stories of how things are done. Sometimes people don't realize how one small decision can build or destroy big/great things.
BTW after 1h of downloading of that torrent now I have 30 seeds!
