Real world apps - clock for clock: Agena vs. Deneb

Hi all!

I’ve done a lot of real world app benches with this new baby compared clock for clock with Agena (and Kentsfield too, see at the end of the thread). I hope you guys enjoy it! :)

These are the basic hardware parts:

Phenom X4 9850 @2400mhz
Phenom II X4 940 @2400mhz
M3A79-T Deluxe
4GB DDR2-800 4-4-4-12
HD 2600 Pro
Samsung 500Gb

Basic software:

Windows Vista SP1 x64 (Superfetch service, disabled). CoreAVC 1.7.0 decoder for H264 stuff; MPC - MPEG-2 Video Decoder (Gabest) for MPEG2 stuff; AviSynth 2.5.7.

The benchmark suite is as follows:

1) Audio Encoding:

- dBpoweramp Music Converter R13.1, wav file (Pink Floyd classic Shine on you Crazy Diamond parts 1-5 previously extracted from CD), to:
aac (Nero encoder) 256 Kbps CBR
mp3 (Lame 3.98) 256 Kbps CBR High Quality
wma (WMA 10 Pro) 256 Kbps CBR
- iTunes v8.0.2, wav file (Pink Floyd classic Shine on you Crazy Diamond parts 1-5 previously extracted from CD), to:
aac 256 Kbps CBR
mp3 256 Kbps CBR
Apple Lossless, Automatic

2) Archiving:

- 7-Zip v4.60 x64, built in bench.
- WinRAR v3.80, built in bench.

3) Image processing:

4) Scientific:

7) Video editing:

- Premiere Pro CS4. A project with two 1080p HD trailers (Behind the Enemy Lines MPEG2, extracted from The Transporter Blu-Ray; and Die Hard 4 trailer H264 from Master and Commander Blu-Ray), exported to:
mp4 720p, MainConcept H264 Codec, HDTV 720p 23.976 High Quality preset.
avi 720p, XviD v1.2.1 Codec, HDTV profile, 5000Kbps. No audio.

- Vegas Pro v8.0c. A project with a 1080p HD trailer (Behind the Enemy Lines MPEG2, extracted from The Transporter Blu-Ray, because Die Hard trailer isn't recognized in Vegas), exported to:
mp4 720p, MainConcept AVC Codec, Main Profile, 5000Kbps. No audio.
avi 720p, XviD v1.2.1 Codec, HDTV profile, 5000Kbps. No audio.

All tests are easily reproducible by anyone.

is this assuming linear scaling, IE, would these percentages be the same if both Processors were clocked at 3 ghz?

villa1n, I think linear scaling is equal for both processors. I'll do some test at 3.0 anyways ;)

Oliverda, because the initial test was Kent vs Agena, and my purpose was to test them at the same clock with all the rest settings at default, FSB, HT, NB etc (my Kent is Q6600).

you should do a 200mhz increase on the NB of Agena and deneb show the % increase vs each.

Yeah, if you have the time :P It would be interesting to see the gains on the NB and how performance scales with that. Thanx for all the hardwork :D

Awesome work PEtnorth, as usual ;)

the resuls vs kentsfield will probably create a stir. I'd love to see yorkfield.. someone lend the man a CPU! i say it creates a stir because some reviews show a pretty hefty, and somewhat odd advantage for yorkie's at times.. only a few percent, but could be attributed to DDR3 the're using in reviews

phII Vs York (6M & 3M) with matching DDR2 would be intersting.

I'm working on a performance comparison for NB speeds. I should make sure you're not nearly finished one of your own, but I guess a double up of results is OK at times :)

Some of you guys asked for numbers with equal NB. OK, some days ago I run some of these tests with 9850 @3.0 & @2.4NB-HT. So, I've done I quick run with 940 @3.0 & 2.4NB-HT. No screenshots this time :P but table summary of course :up:

What I find interesting, is that when it comes to games, it seems the PHII scales quite well, matching yorks and nehalem's and in some cases beating it... I guess that would come down to platform handling the instructions.. can't quite theorize what would cause that.

PetNorth already did the Deneb vs Kentsfield comparison and Deneb with 1.8Ghz NB is already 2% faster than Kentsfield ;).I'd guess with 2.4Ghz NB and looking at Agena results(Vs Deneb),Deneb would gain additional 1-2% over Kentsfield .

Well, in my experience till now, Deneb at stock settings, is slighty but consistently faster than Kent, except some area such as audio encoding (there is some odd or irregular situation with iTunes though, IMO), or image editing.

With equal NB clocks Agena/Deneb looks more in line with my measurements of IPC scaling.

Games are amongs biggest IPC gainers comparing to Agena :)

BTW applications using SSSE3 and in case of Yorkie SSE4 will show large IPC gains compared to AMD K10. Everything else not using them is more or less on par.

I think that adding games, Deneb is about 7-8% on average faster than Agena.

In a lot of Deneb reviews Yorkies already have DDR3 memory so you can compare it there.

If Phenom II gains ~3% across the board from DDR3 1333 memory,it should be a close match to yorks with DDR3 ,clock for clock.
Plus there is an early word that AM3 Phenom IIs OC DDR3 extremely well :),so 1600+ Mhz should be easy to achieve with solid sticks.

If the words "extremely well" are going to be used, I would expected at least 2000MHz speeds to be achievable at the very least.

Well i didn't want to use 2Ghz+ in my post just because it's still early to say how far AM3 phenoms will push the ram.I did say 1600+,it could mean 2Ghz or more :).

Where are you getting this information that AM3 will clock DDR3 "extremely well" anyhow? Was this backed up by any solid numbers or just a "I heard that..."? I'm not doubting AM3's potential, just trying to figure out if this is actually a reliable statement or wishful thinking on your part.

It came from a friend with AMD ties(amd italy).He didn't say 2Ghz clock ,nor he mentioned CPU models used.He just said clocking extremely well and much higher than supported speeds(1333 is max. supported).But the dude is not "xtreme" in any way,so his "extreme" could be our "meh" :p:.That's why I used 1.6Ghz number,just to be on the safe side :D.

I think that's not correct, because Deneb is tested with NB @ 1800mhz... while Agena B3 is 2ghz. ;)
A lot of tested applications are NB-sensitive.. :)

To make a clock for clock comparison, NB must be the same for both architectures. IMHO.
