Project Lain V2000B - Nameless

hi, if your reading this then your probably interested in what I'm doing, so ill start from the beginning

I was first interested in the idea of watercooling a computer about 2 years ago, but had never got the time, money or experience to do it. but after my brother got his bits, made his computer and watercooled it i decided it was my time to give it a go, so i came to this forum and found an incredible wealth of knowledge and alot of people who are very willing to help a first timer with his build.

I decided in september last year to order new parts for my computer, so i got a Q6600, Abit ip 35 pro, and my beloved HD 4870x2. this was my first ever computer build that id put together myself (with no other help) and it went together smoothly. Over xmas i made up my mind to get the stuff to take my computer to the next stage, and enter it into the realm of watercooling.

My case was salvaged from my brothers room, an old dusty V2000B that had been sitting there for a few months i had been looking at buying a TJ07, but decided against it because everyone does that case, and i wanted a little bit of a challenge in fitting everything in.

With much help from people on this forum i finally got around to ordering my fans and radiators last week monday (6th jan) i orderd two Thermochill PA 120.3 radiators and 10 Medium speed yate loons, for reasons out of my control i was unable to get the yate loons (a recall of fault fans) So the kind guys at www.Watercooled-pcs.co.uk quickly contacted me and told me the situation and so recommended that i get XLF-F1253's, i accepted the replacement and quickly received my replacement fans, and a little case modding kit free of charge for the disruption and problems. Thankyou very much watercooling-pcs.co.uk!!

I soon got to work attatching my fans to my radiators and sleeving the wires, once again with help from stickies on this forum i was soon pulling wires out, sleeving them and connecting everything up.

Saturday night came around and i decided to take the plunge and order all my components, they have been orderd and should be here tomorrow or wednesday:

TFC compression fittings
TFC 45 degree compression fittings

Blue UV tubing and coils

Things left to do:
Get my side pannels laser cut, Get my case powder coated
Assemble my loop
Leak test
put everything inside the case
go live!

sorry for not updating! ive run into various problems since i started.

first off i could only get a hold of one PA 120.3 due to manufacturing issues, trying to find people to laser/water jet cut my pannels and find a powder coater.

since my last update ive sent off my side pannels and they are in the process of being water cut, should be here this time next week. ive recieved my second 120.3 and all the other parts for my loops.

unfortunately my camera is broken and is off being repaired so i cant upload any more pics till next week!!!

my computer pannels have been watercut! im off to pick them up tomorrow, and i should have pictures aswell cause my camera is ready to be collected!

i got my pannels back from the Abrasive water jet cutters today, and first of a HUGE thanks to Brian there, he has really put time and effort into these pannels, and i think they look :banana::banana::banana::banana:ING AMAZING!!

if i were you the back side
just get some black mesh and install it or use acryilic

for the side without the window, im planning to put acrylic behind the cavrings, and put 2 or 3 cathodes....white or another colour and illuminate it

Very good looking.

But instead of cathodes I'd suggest maybe an led chain?

It's not as overpoweringly bright as cathodes and gives a nice glow :)

thanks, they took some time but i certianly think they are worth it. This is my first watercooling build and i wanted to go to town on it. i took my case and all the bits on thursday, they said it should be ready about wednesday time, its being done in a metalic blue....if i get my case back wednesday then it should all be done by the weekend! i cant wait :):)

Nice shot. 400mm with x2 on crop? 1280mm zoom?? :O
Can you use autofocus with that? What F-stop is that, like F11?

nope it was taken at 1600mm, 1600 ISO, 420 shutter and f/11 (which is minimum when fully extended with x2 tele converter on it!)
and no, the autofocous doenst work on the 80-400 mm with an x2, it works on some of the other lense but not mine :(

The screws went through the holes in the bottom reasonably easy, but i cant put all 4 screws into each box because of the hole alignment

The PSU fan blows directly into the case devider, so im gunna get my hole saw out and chop up the devider so that the airflow is proper!

-its a new HDD, my seagate one( just 5 months old ) blew with a powercut last week......its a piece of cheap :banana::banana::banana::banana: and i shall never be buying one ever again!
the New HDD arrived on saturday and is a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1, its VERY fast

why not just flip the psu back right side up before u hack out the case ?
it will work better that way too and you dont have to worry about tonne sof dust getting in the psu or anythng you may drop putting things in the case aka nust or screws while mounting things !
looking ace otherwise , particaulryl looking forward to the side view of the rads as i want to turn one or both of mine like that but im scared of how the vent amy end up :(

its a nice idea flipping it upside down, but unfortunately it wont work, because the PSU hovers about 3cm off the floor of the case when it is the correct way up, the rads therefore wont fit...thanks for the advice anyway.....

I say make a new custom backplate :) Because it would be a shame to be cutting in your case at this moment :(

UPDATE:

late last night i was playing about with the bracket, and managed to mount the PSU on it so that it can blow downwards, but the next problem is that about a quater of the PSU fan is blocked by the radiator :down: so im gunna go get a 120mm holecutter and cut the devider :shocked:

looking good :up: - i'm really liking that blue

- it pains me to tell you this....but the only way you are going to be able to run the rad on its side & that ps (& it receive proper ventilation) in the case would be to do some extensive custom work...i almost went that route...but i wanted to add another feser to the bottom..

there are 2 ways to make it work w/ what you currently have:

1 turn the ps on its side ....side by side w/ the rad...& have the fan point out toward the rear door. you will then have to make a new rear ps bracket to cover the rear bottom which now will have changed shape.

2 push your rad a little farther forward to allow for a little more space for the ps...you will turn it on its side so the 120mm fan is blowing out the back of the case...again a new rear panel will have to be made & a little cutting will have to take place as well...


the reason i know of these 2 options:



i had a silverstone DA1200 which is similar to the corsair since it too has a large fan on top of it. After taking into account everything would be required to proceed & time it would take as well...i decided to buy the correct PS

I opted for #3

seek out a ps that only has one 80mm fan exhausting out the rear of the ps. & the rest is completly encased in metal

i went w/ an Antec 1000 initially (mistake for me) & later went w/ the silverstone ZM1200 b/c of the amperage draw required to keep my beast alive.

both mfgr's make rear 80mm fan ps's & there are obviously others...but you have a place to start (should you go this route)

I was folding on a 9800GX2 24/7 for a couple months with a TX650 flat on a table with the fan down and it's perfectly fine. The rad fans will be refreshing the air in that lower chamber constantly, so it won't be stagnating in hot air. I say it's fine with a quarter of the fan blocked.

thanks, im pleased with it, its just the silly things that only i know about and ill ever notice that are bugging me....but like i say, some of it will be resolved when i get round to ordering my new modular and heatshrink....

now i need to go into my brothers room and try dig out the 24 pin thingy in order to leak test!

i wouldnt use stickie stuff to mount your res/pump

i would use the Velcro so its easy removing for drainage

im not really happy with it as it is....the cooling is very good, idle temps are at 26-30 idle at 3.6.....the GPU is idle at around ~30

cable management is a killer, you think you have it all planned and hidden, but then you get to the PCI cables for the GPU and then you realise they have nowhere else to go BUT up the middle of your case casting two black lines across you setup...its so annoying,

im not even going to bother sleveing the cables until i get my new modular PSU...it would just be pointless!!

as to the wheels.....ill probs be putting it on them this week when i put in the new fan crontoller and second HDD and maybe soundcard...

if not on wheels ill buy some blue LED feet for it!

Cable management and lighting. Overall I love the color and absolutely love the build. You did quite an excellent job. Now just tidy it up!

power cable extender, 6pin extender, etc. Use black techflex-cleancut sleeving... looks amazing.

thanks, i know how much of a mess the case is in! it looks rediculious, but im in the process of braiding all the cables on my new modular 1,000 W PSU once thats in, ill think about moving the cables out of sight, i had to finish the computer in a bit of a hurry so yea, it looks a mess

Righht mini update:

my motherboard is pretty much screwed, so im ordering a new one, the Foxcon Blackops 775 socket mobo, with some DDR dual channel Ram, a SSD HDD for my OS and a nice big cable braiding kit from MurderMods and a Modular PSU for me to braid....im gunna finish up with my side pannels, put the acrylic in them and light them up from the back......i might change my tubing and liquid to clear tubing and green/pink or blue liquid, i may even add in a 3rd loop with my Blackops NB

stay tuned parts will be arriving within the next week!!!

EDIT: almost forgot to add in, a fan controller, i have 12 fans in this rig running at full speed...not exactly what you'd call a silent build at the moment lol

That's looking great! I have almost the same case (The front is solid rather than the mesh stuff on mine) and I have been thinking about some similar modifications, and I've drawn some inspiration from this build =)

lol its not a pleasant experience haha i blew my original fan conroler by putting all my fans in it and turning them up full :rofl::rofl: which was a bit of a mistake lol

the stuff will come staggerd as i dont have enough to buy all my parts at once, it comes to about £650~

im still trying to decide which motherboard to get, its either gunna be a blackops with a set of dual DDR3 4GB ram, or an asus rampage, they come about the same price.....of about £215 ....then there is the money Mr. Gates demands for me to use his :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing operating system

then it will be the PSU and cable braiding.

Ok, so ive been looking at different motherboards etc and have come to purchase a DFI Lanparty LT X48-T2R X48 board, along with another Samsung spinpoint 1TB 7200 32mb HDD and a new copy of vista....will be arriving tomorrow and should all be installed and working!

next on my list will be the NB block, transparent tubing, Cossair ram cooler, new PSU and cable braiding kit....aswell as finishing off my side pannels with clear acrylic window and coloured for the patterns on the reverse of the case!

Well, its been a while! my un-documented stuff is ive added in a second HDD, and changed out my mobo from an abit to a DFI!

Since my last update, iver ordered a new modular PSU (Cossair 750W), new keyboard (razer tarantula) and Murdermod's finest green and blue sleeving, here are my pictures! excuse the quality, my new hardware was taken with a crappy point and shoot camera, and the pictures of the braided cables where taken on a piece of paper without my studio lights, more picture will follow next week when i have my lights, and its in my case!

@pradaG Thanks, i did my best! it was my first ever sleeving attempt on a 24pin and ATX stuff, i think it went well! And your in luck, i have had some reasonable weather and manged to set my temporary studio up outside! without lights, but i just used the light of the sun!

that i am...looks awesome :D - you have to be happy w/ the end result.

& i noted that you got another PS (a good one too) which will work perfect w/ the hole you cut in the mid plate :yepp:


the only thing that looks like it needs something is where all the conenctions go into the PS...maybe a large (diameter) piece of sleeving & a some shrink (in either color) to cover all of the wires going into the PS gromet (which should help w/ the transition) & keep all the wires hidden. I know this prob will result in you having to take apart the 24 pin again...but just a thought :shrug:

Very nice, exemay. I saw your sleeving pics in another thread, and am quite impressed with the way you combined the green and blue.

To follow up on PradaG's comment, it will help show off your nice sleeving job to put a piece of heatshrink at the entrance to the PSU (but, maybe not needed if you won't see this part in your build). I've found that large heatshrink will go over the 24-pin connector - you just have to wrestle with it, taking it over one end first. If you use a 3:1 heatshrink it will end up snug. I can imagine you would not be excited about removing every pin again!

@prada yeah, ive not actually tryed the PSU in my case yet, but im 99.9% sure that it will fit in the hole i cut! i just had to go for another cossair PSU, after my 650W has served me and my computer soo well! a and i promise, more pics will follow up of the other stuff in my case after everything is sleeved!

What im planning on doing, is once ive sleeved up my SATA stuff, im planning on using some of the heathshrink that will be left over (i hope) and im going to take out 6 pins at a time, and put the shrink over 6 pins at the entrance, so i will still have alternating blue/green even at the entrance of the PSU! im going to check if the SATA stuff shrinks over 6 pins, or wether ill need to do just two SAtA bits of shrink over 12 pins each!

At first i was going to take the case off my PSU and run the sleeve and braid into the housing, but then i saw the warnty void sticker....knowing my luck if i had of taken the casing off, then it would blow up when i plug it in, so yeah, hopefully if i have some bits of the SATA shrink left over ill do more blue/green alternating at the entrance of the PSU!

i dont mind taking out the pins that much with the tool! it makes it sooo god dam easy!!! they slide out like a dream, the only thing i had trouble with was my PCIE pins....they didnt go so well :(

Ive still got to order my acrylic and fans....i cant find anywhere in the UK with either 1450 or 1850 rpm gentle typhoons :confused:

Any ideas of what colour acrylic i can use on my side pannels??

15 mins away from me, the guys in there are unbelievably helpful they fitted me while they where extremely busy, the turn around was a week! they do wet spraying aswell!

The molex remover is very very good, as long as you read how to use it(when you order it nills sends you a nice helpful email!) you slip it into the pin and the wires just slip right out, i had a problem on 2 of the PCiE pins, i just pulled a bit harder and they eventually came out! very good buy

well, ya see, i was going to dig out that old 650W PSU and place in my nice new Modular 750! but then i thought......im gunna have to move a ton of stuff about in my case to get it in, then put it all back.........then next week when i get my new tubing and a few fittings, take the stuff out, aswell as my motherboard again! and THEN put it in again! so....im affraid you will just have to be patient and wait My friend!!! i promise, i will try and make it worth the wait :p::p::p: .......... im trying to figure out weather or not to take the res-tops off my pumps, and mount the pumps in the HDD bays and put two nice big cylinder res's in my case, but i dont know where or how! any ideas? ive been looking for inspiration!

Right, tonight i was looking at my case thinking how on earth can i fit two multi-option res's in my case??? :confused::confused: then it came to me! i saw a solution a while ago, i just didnt know where! i found the build and realized it was in a tj07 build that id seen, so i got out my calipers, dug up some dimensions and saw if it would all fit!

So, tonight i have orderd:
2 x EK- Multioption 150 Res's
1 x EK-Mosfet DFI UT
1 x EK-NB/SB 5 - Plexi
2 x EK Anti Cyclon Plate
2 x Spare 50mm Reservoir Holders - 50mm (Set of Two)
1 x TFC - 50mm Laing DDC O-Ring - Blue (TFC-BL-ORING)
1 x TFC - 50mm Laing DDC O-Ring - Green (TFC-GR-ORIN)
2 x (UN)Designs Absolute Pump Bracket Rev. 3
2 x Laing DDC Acrylic Pump Top V3 (XSPC)

The UN brackets are so i can put my pumps in the bottom of my case with the radiators

i was also thinking about what else i could add to that beautiful DFI board of mine! i then looked at snipe's amazing permafrost build and saw the Mosfet and NB block..so if your reading this snipe, many thanks you are an inspiration! (i also loved your colour scheme! so im going to flow with a green and blue vibe in my case)

i also got some Feser 3/8-ID 1/2-OD Acid green and UV blue tubing with corresponding colored liquids!......so my build will be a lil more colour co-ordinated! (oh yeah, im planning to run the 3/8 ID 1/2OD stuff without kinky coils, but ill have to see how it goes)

Still to order....some fittings.....but i cant figure out them right now.....my head is in a different place- rather a good weekend:yepp: and i figured that it would be easier to figure the fittings out once i had the res's in my hands!

:) I was doing the exact same thing last night - i decided on just about the same thing - i'm going to use either the OEM EK mounts or something a little custom. either way...they will be mounted to the rear 5.25 drive bay cover that gets made for my TJ

Tomorrow will probs see the demise of my current messy setup, which looks pretty awful tbh, if everything goes to plan and nothing un-expected comes up then there should be some pictures of a board with thoes beautiful blocks on!

and maybe i will have figured out how to fit in my pump down the bottom with my PA 120.3's.....currently i cant see a way of doing it :( .......I dont know weather or not to put the pumps directly below the res, or have them down by the radiators and have them draw water from them :shrug:
If i have them below the res's then ill have to fit in like another foot of tubing, but apparently its a bad thing to have the pumps feed from the radiator.....

Anyway, tomorrow when i take my computer apart im gunna order my Green tubing and some 90's!

why not get one of those 120mm mounting brackets for the ddc and mount them on that 120mm fan in the front? Then maybe some 90s from the res into the pump, then pump to radiator, then radiator to your blocks?

The second could also be mounted at the back 120mm exhaust fan. This way, you also get air moving over the bottom of the ddcs which get pretty hot.

Also, I'm planning a build with this same case when I get back to school. Could you measure the side to side space between the side panels for me? Like the width of the floor? Planning to throw a gtx480 with sanyo denkis and shrouds down there. :D

i have thought about doing what you said, getting the UN bracket to mount it to my fan, but the thing is i have 2 loops.....where would the second pump go??

If i do put the pump in the loop after the rad then im gunna mount the two pumps side by side on my current UN brackets and have male to male nipples feeding from the radiator into the pump, i think there is just enough room....not entirely sure tho,

but that is only if i decide to put the pumps after the rads....

i can see where your coming from, but i think with that UN bracket u suggested that holds onto a 120mm, it wouldnt give me enough room at the bottom for the rads and pump :(

ill get the measurements for you 2morrow when my case is empty! i should think u can fit that in the bottom....

I understand that but from my perspective I would think that bracket gives you extra room to fab your own mounting system - possibly just an L bracket with some of that super strong 3m tape, that would certainly cut down on the height of the thing - and from what I've seen in the earlier pictures - you could push the rads back to accommodate some extra room if necessary?

Edit: I forgot about your sidepanel designs but, seeing as you've moved the other 120mm back into the front of the case, I should think the UN 120mm barcket and a modified L bracket or something to that effect would let you put your XSPC top in front of the rads.

The second pump could be mounted to the exhaust fan by the CPU? I mean if you were going to run from the rad, you could flip the orientation, drill a hole in the middle plate connect to the pump and go from the pump to the CPU directly and it would then become a pretty short loop. There may be enough room to either side of the PS to accommodate this from what I can remember on my case or maybe just in front of the PS - I have no idea how long your PS though.

As per usual another late update :p: i was meant put this all together on thursday....when my fittings arrived, turns out i had a day at the millbrook proving ground to go to, so i ended up doing it yesterday, but the update didnt go up then cause by the time i got it finished in the evening i went out!

Right, here is the pump! this seems to be the only way i can get my pump in the bottom of my case, the only thing is with all the fittings im wondering if it will abolish my flow :shrug::shrug: Opinions are more than welcome!

The pump will be mounted so the output is faceing upwards, it will go into the 90, then the 45, then into the tubing, then into a 45, a 90 then the radiator!

My build is standing still at the moment, cause i realised while i was putting the pumps in that i was a 90 degree fitting short! so im waiting for that, pictures will be taken tomorrow of my pump placement when i have some good light!

wow - that pump placement may be too restrictive - I'll wait to let the experts chime in on that but I don't think it will be good for your flow numbers.

Also, any chance I could get that measurement?

Certianly, im sorry, i forgot to take do that when i was putting my pumps in yesterday.... tomorrow if the lighting is good im taking my case outside and doing some pics of the new pump placement, ill get my tape out for you and post them up!.....as for the flow, ive done some research, it would appear that the 90 coming off the pump wont do me that much harm..... this isnt an i7 rig or cooling anything extreme, so it should be fine... anyhow, if the tempss are bad ill just reduce my overclock, doesnt bother me that much :)

Hahaha i know lol i only realized what i had written after i had posted oh well, thought it may bring some comedy to my build!
Aaaaah yes.... the dreaded kill coils, personally i hate the look of them, but because my first build in this case was done to a time-limit i wanted to get it in there, and quick, i couldnt afford the proper fittings to not be able to use them, so i had to put the coils in, but i can assure you, on the final revision of this build there wont be one in sight!!

It would take a lot of fittings, tubing, and blocks to make a DDC 3.25 drop below the 'magic 1.5GPM'.

As long as you aren't expecting any uber cooling from this, it will behave just fine. If you need more than it offers, I would suggest, like others in the thread, that you use BP DualRotary 90deg fittings, rather than the single rotary 90deg you have on the pump. Also, I was curious why turning the pump around wasn't an option ?

Yeah, these are DCC 18W's, they have alot of power... i did look into a fair ammount of tests and builds etc as to how much the 90 degree fitting would kill the flow, im not expecting the most amazing cooling from this rig, just enough to keep my Q6600 running at 3.2ghz and my GPU temps below about 50/60C when under load, and to look aesthetically pleasing

I did think about the dual rotary 90deg fittings, but there isnt really enough room......as for flipping the pumps up the other way.... its room. when i put the pictures up tomorrow you will see i have about 1 and a half inches between my rads and pumps, and because of where the pumps are going, it would be impossible to get the fittings and tubing in that way! granted, i could put the pumps up the other way, but i would need 4 90 degree fittings and two nipples coming off of EACH pump to get it to work and actually fit to the confides of my case, and i figured that would kill worse than what i have done

and yeah, some may say why didnt i put the pumps in the top section of my rig.....its all to do with asthetics on this revision.... i have a very set way in my mind of how this rig is going to look! and im gunna try my hardest do get it done that way :up:

Right, today my fittings arrived....but only the ones i have orderd from the UK, i now have 4 45's and 4 normal comp fittings, though i am very supprised at the build quality of these new ones..... they are feser, but they dont really have a barb on them.... ill be doing a little post in the liquid cooling section comparing them, im very shocked! :eek:

The build is finished!!! but it wasn't working :( i couldn't figure it out atall.... it went to post when i had only the 24pin connected but NOT the 8 pin..... very strange, someone suggested to me in the intel thread that it could be an over-tightened block.... so this-morning, with my brothers help we took the mobo out and fixed it! turns out it was my mosfet block over-tightened

Pics will be following, the computer is sitting down in my hall atm being leak tested with the 24-pin jumper on it! as soon as the bubbles are out of the loops, ill fill em up, take it outside and take some lovely pics for u!!

hmmmm i think its been too long! ive not logged onto this site for months! and its been even longer since ive worked on my rig.... its still wokring but looking messy! i stopped work on it due to the fact that ive been busy with collage, exams and other hobbies! ohh.... and writing off my car :(:rofl::(
